The Elephant in the Room: New Skills and Work Dimensions of Turkish White Goods Industry Engineers in Industry 4.0 Era

    Demirbag, Kubra Simsek; Yildirim, Nihan

While the emergence of the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) concept has heightened concerns about how digital transformation will affect employees, engineers who create, develop, and spread the I4.0 tools and technologies are ignored. Also, the industries with the highest digital maturity should be prioritized since they are the readiest ones for the I4.0 transformation. In this context, our focus is the engineers in the Turkish white goods industry, one of the three industries with the highest level of digital maturity in Turkey. We aim to determine the new skills expected from engineers and to uncover the impact of the perceived usage level of I4.0 technologies by engineers on the dimensions of engineering work. In this article, we conducted two separate surveys for engineers and managers and sought answers to four research questions using factor analysis and regression analysis. The results show that the new skills are divided into intrinsic motivation, technology, and data and information skills. At the same time, the perceived usage level of I4.0 technologies influences the social characteristics dimension of engineering work. We revealed that the sociability level of the engineers who use data analytics, artificial intelligence, simulation, and RFID/RTLS technologies while performing their jobs tends to decrease, while the sociability level of the engineers who use adaptive robots and additive manufacturing technologies gets higher.

Design and fabrication of low-cost microsystems for production of chitosan particles; [Kitosan parçacıklarının üretimi için düşük maliyetli mikrosistemlerin tasarımı ve fabrikasyonu]

    Akay, Seref; Özdilek, Hasret

Recent research has focused on the methods for administration of medications in a controlled manner while minimizing side effects. Cross-linked hydrogels have wide application area as nanocarriers. There are many approaches for developing suitable methods to produce ideal particles. Advances in microtechnology have been considered as a solution to produce controlled drug delivery systems, however, it is limited due to the necessity for specialized laboratories. In this study, a simple method to produce antibiotic-loaded chitosan particles is proposed. Production was carried out with two different designs, a syringe-based flow focusing system (outer diameter of 1 mm, inner diameter of 120 µm) and microchannel with 250 µm width and 100 µm height fabricated with the computer numerical control (CNC). Sodium Triphosphate (TPP) was used as cross-linking agent for the production of particles and the effects of the concentration and flow rates on the particle formation was investigated. It has been observed that particles can be produced in a syringe-based system, but the resulting particles are not homogeneous. In the studies carried out with CNC microchannel, it was determined by SEM analysis that the obtained particles ranged in size from 39 to 771 nm, and it was seen that the CNC microchannel was more effective at low and equal flow rates (25 µl/min). It has been found that increasing the flow rate and concentration of chitosan increases the particle size. It was determined that Ampicillin loaded particles synthesized with the CNC microchannel exhibited high inhibition against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. These results show that the proposed approaches for the design of microsystems can be used in the formation of drug carriers without the need for specialized laboratories and expertise.

Availability of sedimentary and volcanic rock deposits on Northeastern Turkey as concrete aggregates

    Çavdar, Ahmet; Çavdar, Özlem

Turkey has large aggregate deposits; however, these deposits cannot be used effectively due to a lack of controls. This can lead to fatal errors, as in the 6 February 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes. The main motivation of this study is to investigate the availability of existing and new aggregate deposits as concrete aggregates in northeastern Turkey. Thus, the quality of aggregates in this region will be studied comparatively. This research was carried out with aggregate samples taken from 30 different rock quarries in 10 different provinces in this region of Turkey. First, the locations of 30 crushed rock aggregates were identified, and their petrographic, mineralogical, physical, geometric and durability properties were determined. Fifteen different test procedures were applied to 30 crushed rock samples. It was concluded that these rocks are generally sedimentary rock types and that 18 of these 30 samples are of limestone origin. To obtain high-strength concrete, in addition to quality cement, the aggregates used must also be of high quality. The use of aggregate resources mentioned in this study for building concrete will contribute to the production of high-strength concrete. These samples, which generally have sufficient physical, mechanical and durability properties, meet the limitations of the standards much better than concrete aggregates. High-statistical-performance regression equations were obtained for the physical and durability properties.

    Aydin, Aydanur; Celik, Sevilay Senol

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of eHealth interventions on symptom management outcomes of patients undergoing CABG surgery. A systematic review was performed on CINAHL, PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid MEDLINE, and Scopus from 2006 to June 2022. The Joanna Briggs Institute's evaluation tools for RCT and quasi-experimental studies were used to assess the methodological quality of the publications included in this review and to determine the extent to which each publication addressed the possibility of bias in its design. The raters' agreement was determined by using Cohen's kappa test, which yielded a kappa coefficient of 0.51. (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42023398498). A systematic analysis of 11 publications involving 2.586 patients showed that the eHealth intervention effectively increased activity and self-management. eHealth interventions, which are also effective in the management of psychological problems, had results that were partially effective in pain management and effective in quality of life. Digital healthcare has become an important component of patient care. Nurses providing care should be aware that eHealth interventions are showing promising results in patient care.

Rane, Nitin Liladhar; Günen, Mehmet Akif; Mallick, Suraj Kumar; Rane, Jayesh; Pande, Chaitanya B.; Giduturi, Monica; Bhutto, Javed Khan; Yadav, Krishna Kumar; Tolche, Abebe Debele; Alreshidi, Maha Awjan

The significant natural energy sources for reducing the global usage of fossil fuels are renewable energy (RE) sources. Solar energy is a crucial and reliable RE source. Site selection for solar photovoltaic (PV) farms is a crucial issue in terms of spatial planning and RE policies. This study adopts a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based Multi-Influencing Factor (MIF) technique to enhance the precision of identifying and delineating optimal locations for solar PV farms. The choice of GIS and MIF is motivated by their ability to integrate diverse influencing factors, facilitating a holistic analysis of spatial data. The selected influencing factors include solar radiation, wind speed, Land Surface Temperature (LST), relative humidity, vegetation, elevation, land use, Euclidean distance from roads, and aspect. The optimal sites of solar PV power plant delineated revealed that 'very low' suitability of site covering 4.866% of the study area, 'low' suitability of site 13.190%, 'moderate' suitability of site 31.640%, 'good' suitability of site 32.347%, and 'very good' suitability of site for solar PV power plant encompassing 17.957% of the study area. The sensitivity analysis results show that the solar radiation, relative humidity, and elevation are the most effective on the accuracy of the prediction. The validation of the results shows the accuracy of solar PV power plant prediction using MIF technique in the study area was 81.80%. The integration of GIS and MIF not only enhances the accuracy of site suitability assessment but also provides a practical implementation strategy. This research offers valuable insights for renewable energy policymakers, urban planners, and other stakeholders seeking to identify and develop optimal locations for solar energy power farms in their respective regions.

Revisiting the depositional age and provenance characteristics of metasedimentary rocks from the basement units in the Central Pontides (N Turkey): New constraints for tectonic evolution of the southern Black Sea region

Cimen, Okay; Gucer, Mehmet Ali; Akal, Cueneyt; Goncueoglu, Mehmet Cemal; Arslan, Mehmet; Simonetti, Antonio; Karaoglan, Fatih

The pre -Jurassic tectonic evolution of the Central Pontides in northern Turkey is still poorly understood due to the lack of detailed geochemical and geochronological data from the basement units. Therefore, this study reports for the first time combined whole rock geochemistry, trace element data and U-Pb ages for detrital zircons, and Ar-Ar geochronological data from the metasedimentary rocks of the Devrekani Massif, Geme Complex, and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit to better understand their provenance, depositional age characteristics, and tectonic evolutions. The detrital zircon U-Pb data of metasedimentary units from the Devrekani Massif, Geme Complex, and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit yield ca. 191, 185 and 298 Ma maximum depositional ages (youngest age peaks), respectively. The Devrekani Massif is dominated by Permo-Carboniferous-aged detrital zircons (67 %), whereas Neoproterozoic and Devonian -aged detrital zircons are more common in the Geme Complex (47 %) and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit (53 %). These distinct age distributions clearly indicate that the Devrekani Massif may has been deposited in a dissimilar location compared to the Geme Complex and the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit. Furthermore, in contrast to the Devrekani Massif, the source area of the metasedimentary rocks from the Geme Complex is comparable with that of the Serve & ccedil;ay Unit. Lastly, the obtained detrital zircon U-Pb and mica Ar-Ar ages suggest that the Devrekani Massif and the Geme Complex were deposited and metamorphosed during the Early and Middle Jurassic, respectively. The Serve & ccedil;ay Unit was deposited and metamorphosed in the Permian.

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, recognized for its unique taste and aroma and for its social and health impacts. Coffee contains a plethora of nutritional and bioactive components, whose content can vary depending on their origin, processing, and extraction methods. Gathered evidence in literature shows that the regular coffee consumption containing functional compounds (e.g., polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and melanoidins) can have potential beneficial effects on cardiometabolic risk factors such as abdominal adiposity, hyperglycemia, and lipogenesis. On the other hand, coffee compounds, such as caffeine, diterpenes, and advanced glycation end products, may be considered a risk for cardiometabolic health. The present comprehensive review provides up-to-date knowledge on the structure-function relationships between different chemical compounds present in coffee, one of the most prevalent beverages present in human diet, and cardiometabolic health.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of short and long rest running-based high-intensity training (HIIT) on body composition, isokinetic strength, and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Nineteen physically active men were recruited to voluntarily participate in the study. The participants were grouped using the closed-envelope randomized method as HIIT with a short rest (HIITS, n = 9; age: 19.60 +/- 1.34 years) and HIIT with a long rest (HIITL, n = 10; age: 19.77 +/- 0.97). Pre and post the 8-week running-based HIIT program, body mass index and body fat % were measured and all subjects performed isokinetic strength tests to determine their hamstring (H)/quadriceps (Q) peak torque ratio and the peak power and peak work for their H and Q muscles. The participants also underwent a graded exercise test to determine their VO2max. Statistical analysis performed with One-Way Variance Analysis and Bonferroni correction post hoc tests. As a result of the study, there were no significant differences between the pre- and post-training isokinetic strength parameters for the H and Q of HIITL and HIITS at velocities of 60 and 240(degrees)s(-1). The VO2max did not change for HIITS training but the VO2max increased (p < 0.05) for HIITL training. In conclusion, that HIITL and HIITS programs for 8 weeks did not change the relative and absolute strength, force production and the VO2max, but the VO2max increased (p < 0.05) for HIITL training.

Late pleistocene glacial history of Mount Karadag, SW Turkiye

Bayrakdar, Cihan; Çilgin, Zeynel; Saris, Faize; Yesilyurt, Serdar; Keserci, Ferhat; Büyükdeniz, Yusuf; Halis, Onur; Vockenhuber, Christof; Ivy-Ochs, Susan; Akçar, Naki

Glacial landforms in the southwestern part of the Anatolian Peninsula are found at lower elevations than the rest, suggesting that glaciers were present during the Late Pleistocene. Karadag, located west of the Western Taurus Mountains, provides evidence of the climatic conditions that facilitated this extensive glaciation. It is characterized by numerous peaks exceeding 2300 m above sea level (asl), with the highest peak reaching 2418 m, making it the region's largest glaciation area. This high mountain mass is composed mainly of limestone and dolomite. This study focuses on the glacial landforms in Karadag to reconstruct the Late Pleistocene glacial chronology and palaeoclimate of the Western Taurus Mountains. We employed detailed UAV photogrammetry, extensive fieldwork and mapping, surface exposure dating with cosmogenic 36Cl, meteorological measurements, palaeoglacier reconstruction, and palaeo-equilibrium line altitude (pELA) calculations. Karadag, a topographic barrier to humid air masses from the Mediterranean Sea, ranks as the second wettest area in the Western Taurus Mountains. At a meteorological station we installed in Karadag, an annual precipitation of 1700 mm or more was recorded, highlighting its significant precipitation. In Karadag, we have identified two glacial valleys with a maximum length of 4.5 km and six cirques. The glaciers reached their maximum extent around 22.4 f 2.8 ka during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), facilitated by the lowering of the pELA to 2090 m. During the LGM, the glaciers covered an area of approximately 3.5 km2 and reached a maximum thickness of about 140 m. Sample TRKR 10 at 2015 m probably belongs to the LGM period. Although a single sample does not conclude definitive conclusions, the presence of the moraine at its highest position indicates the maximum thickness of the glacier. Following the LGM, two more significant glacier advances occurred during the Lateglacial (15.5 f 2.7 ka) and the Younger Dryas (12.4 f 1.1 ka). During the late Pleistocene glaciations, and especially during the LGM, Karadag probably received more precipitation than today, leading to the formation of glaciers at relatively lower elevations than on the Anatolian Peninsula.

Sprint and Anaerobic Power with the Soccer-Specific ACTN3 Gene: A Distintive Example

Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Özkamci, Huseyin; Diker, Gurkan; Sever, Mehmet Onur; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Ön, Sadi; Can, Ibrahim; Ulucan, Korkut; Aslan, Beste Tacal

The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to identify differences in certain anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, anaerobic power, and Illinois agility tests) between professional and amateur soccer players, and (2) to determine whether there is a difference in the ACTN3 gene polymorphism between professional and amateur soccer players. Ultimately, the goal is to reveal which parameters contribute to the differentiation in these two aspects. A total of 133 volunteer soccer players, including 71 professionals and 62 amateurs, participated in the research. DNA extraction from buccal epithelial cells was performed using a commercial kit to determine the genetic background of the athletes, and Real -Time PCR was conducted for genotyping. Statistical analysis of the findings obtained from the test results was performed using the SPSS 23 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) package program. The homogeneity of variance of the data was assessed using the Levene Test, and normal distribution analyses were conducted using the Shapiro -Wilk Test. Chi-square and Mann -Whitney U tests were employed for parameter analysis. The significance level was set at p<0.05. Evaluation of the data in our study revealed no statistically significant difference in ACTN3 rs1815739 gene polymorphism between the groups (p>0.05). However, there is a statistically significant difference in anaerobic parameters (10m sprint, 30m sprint, and anaerobic power) except for the Illinois test (p<0.05). In conclusion, our study found that gene polymorphism is not a differentiating factor between professional and amateur soccer players, but speed (10m and 30m) and anaerobic power parameters are differentiating factors.

Supply chain resilience in the tourism and hospitality industry: A comprehensive examination of driving and restraining forces

Erol, Ismail; Oztel, Ahmet; Dogru, Tarik; Peker, Iskender; Neuhofer, Irem Onder; Benli, Tolga

Supply chain disruptions and a lack of resilient supply chains have adverse impact on the global economy. Particularly, complex nature of the tourism and hospitality industry makes it even more susceptible to failure when supply chain resiliency is rather low or does not exist. However, despite its significance, a comprehensive and systematic examination of building resilience in tourism and hospitality supply chains (THSCs) is lacking in the extant literature. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive framework that outlines the driving and restraining forces for building resilient THSCs. The decision framework proposed in this study integrates rough interval valued neutrosophic (RIVN) force field theory of change with RIVN-ISM-MICMAC methodology. The results showed that the restraining forces, such as lack of effective regulations and incentives and effective organizational and supply chain policies are the primary factors that constrain improving resilience in THSCs. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Novel asymmetric biscarbothioamides as Alzheimer's disease associated cholinesterase inhibitors: synthesis, biological activity, and molecular docking studies

Muglu, Halit; Yakan, Hasan; Erdogan, Musa; Topal, Fevzi; Topal, Meryem; Turkes, Cuneyt; Beydemir, Sukru

Exploring novel frameworks for treating Alzheimer's disease is an ambitious objective. In this particular context, a range of asymmetric biscarbothioamide derivatives (3a-l) with varying substitutions have been meticulously designed and effectively synthesized. The newly synthesized compounds have all been definitively characterized using established spectroscopic techniques such as 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. In vitro, all the derivatives (3a-l) were evaluated to assess their inhibitory potential against cholinesterase enzymes (acetylcholinesterase, AChE, and butyrylcholinesterase, BChE). The outcomes demonstrated that these derivatives were potent and exhibited selectivity in inhibiting AChE, except for compounds 3b and 3e, which specifically inhibited BChE, showcasing varying degrees of KI values. Significantly, compounds 3j (KIs of 11.91 +/- 2.25 nM for AChE and 77.76 +/- 8.02 nM for BChE) and 3h (KIs of 14.73 +/- 2.30 nM for AChE and 59.54 +/- 6.20 nM for BChE) emerged as the most potent dual inhibitors of AChE and BChE within the series, respectively, with KI constants even lower than those of the standard drug tacrine (KIs of 68.70 +/- 5.39 nM for AChE and 111.60 +/- 10.52 nM for BChE). Furthermore, their potential scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals was evaluated. To further validate the experimental findings, molecular docking studies were performed in silico to ascertain the binding modes of these compounds with the active pockets of AChE and BChE enzymes. Investigating innovative frameworks for addressing Alzheimer's disease is a challenging goal. In this specific scenario, a selection of asymmetric biscarbothioamide derivatives (3a-l) with different substitutions has been carefully formulated and successfully synthesized.

Comparative analysis of Glasgow Coma Scale, quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment, base excess, and lactate for mortality prediction in critically ill emergency department patients

Meral, Gurbuz; Ardiç, Senol; Günay, Serkan; Güzel, Kadir; Köse, Ahmet; Durmus, Hulya Gencbay; Uysal, Serhat; Coskun, Aydin

OBJECTIVES: It is crucial to promptly identify high-mortality patients in emergency departments and initiate their treatment as soon as possible. Although many parameters have been studied to select patients with high mortality, no comprehensive evaluation exists in previous literature on these parameters in critically ill patients, regardless of patient groups. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA), blood gas base excess (BE), and blood gas lactate in predicting mortality in critically ill patients admitted to the emergency department. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included adult patients with Emergency Severity Index 1-2 (critically ill) admitted to the emergency department. All patients were evaluated by the physician within 10 min, and blood gas samples were taken. The data collection forms recorded the patients' GCS and qSOFA scores at the time of first evaluation by the physician. The qSOFA score assessment was performed in all patients with ESI levels 1 and 2, regardless of whether infective pathology was suspected. Blood gas BE and lactate values were also from laboratory test results. Patients or their relatives were contacted by phone at the end of the 1st month to obtain information about the clinical condition (survival or mortality). RESULTS: A total of 868 patients were included, with 163 deaths observed within 30 days. GCS score, qSOFA score, and lactate value were significant in predicting mortality within 30 days. While the BE value was significant for predicting 30-day mortality for values equal to or below the lower limit of -1.5 (P < 0.001), it was not significant for values equal to or above the upper limit of +3 (P > 0.05). The most successful prediction model for predicting 30-day mortality was found to be qSOFA with a cutoff value of >= 1. CONCLUSION: In emergency departments, each of the GCS, qSOFA scores, BE, and lactate values can be used independently as a practical mortality prediction model in critically ill patients. Among these four models, qSOFA is the most successful practical mortality prediction model in critically ill patients.

Jabran, Muhammad; Ali, Muhammad Amjad; Acet, Tuba; Zahoor, Adil; Abbas, Amjad; Arshad, Usman; Mubashar, Muhammad; Naveed, Muhammad; Ghafoor, Abdul; Gao, Li

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most significant crops and the backbone of food security worldwide. However, low wheat production remains a substantial concern in global agricultural systems. It can be attributed to several factors, including adverse climatic conditions, plant disease and poor soil quality. Recent efforts have explored bioinoculant applications as a promising approach to enhance wheat yield, trying to mitigate constraints essential for future wheat production and global food security. This study tested talc powder, wheat biochar, sugarcane bagasse biochar, and farmyard manure as carriers with two endophytic bacterial strains, Burkholderia phytofirmans PsJN and Bacillus spp. MN54 was applied to three wheat varieties (Ujala-16, Zincol-16, and Fathejang-16). The data was recorded at the seedling and maturity growth stages of plants. A pot experiment revealed significant improvements in plant growth following bioinoculant application compared to controls. Notably, the combination of sugarcane bagasse biochar with Bacillus sp. MN54 exhibited the most pronounced effects, promoting internodal length, spike length, tiller number per plant, grain yield per plant, and spikelets per spike. Additionally, talc powder with Bacillus sp. MN54 increased peduncle length, tiller number per plant, and spike length in Fathejang-16. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing bioinoculant formulations for improved agricultural practices, adapting to climate change, and contributing to ensuring global food security.

The present study focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel pyrazole carboxamide derivatives (SA1-12). The inhibitory effect of the compounds on cholinesterases (ChEs; AChE and BChE) and carbonic anhydrases (hCAs; hCA I and hCA II) isoenzymes were screened as in vitro. These series compounds have been identified as potential inhibitors with a KI values in the range of 10.69 +/- 1.27-70.87 +/- 8.11 nM for hCA I, 20.01 +/- 3.48-56.63 +/- 6.41 nM for hCA II, 6.60 +/- 0.62-14.15 +/- 1.09 nM for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and 54.87 +/- 7.76-137.20 +/- 9.61 nM for butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). These compounds have a more effective inhibition effect when compared to the reference compounds. In addition, the potential binding positions of the compounds with high affinity for ChE and hCAs were demonstrated by in silico methods. The results of in silico and in vitro studies support each other. As a result of the present study, the compounds with high inhibitory activity for metabolic enzymes, such as ChE and hCA were designed. The compounds may be potential alternative agents used as selective ChE and hCA inhibitors in the treatment of Alzheimer ' s disease and glaucoma. image

This study aims to examine how the subcomponents and overall measurement of ecological footprint, as well as the use of information and communication technologies, affect health expenditures. For this study, the sample group consisted of the top 25 countries with the highest ecological footprint for the period 2000 to 2021. System GMM estimation results demonstrate that economic growth and ecological footprint have a positive impact on health expenditures. Covid-19 dummy variables, have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. On the other hand, information and communication technologies has a statistically significant but negative effect on health expenditures. The estimation results show that the Covid-19 pandemic increased health expenditures. Looking at the effect of subcomponents of environmental degradation on health expenditures, all subcomponents have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. It is seen that the most effective variable is forest products. The variable that has almost the same impact as the footprint of forest products is the carbon footprint. Carbon footprint has significant and positive impact on health expenditures, followed by fishing grounds cropland, grazing land, built-up land. The results of the study indicate which forms of pollution should be given priority by policymakers in order to prevent an increase in health expenditure resulting from environmental degradation.
