Bilgiç, Fatma Şule; Yıldız Karaahmet, Aysu; Karakaş, Sevda

This study aimed to examine the association between cyber pornography use, sexual health literacy, and sexual function in women of reproductive age. This cross-sectional study was conducted via an online platform using Google Forms between January 25 and February 23, 2025, with 1,202 female participants aged 18–35. Data were collected using a Data Collection Form, the Cyber Pornography Use Scale-9 (CPUS-9), the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX), and the Sexual Health Literacy Scale (SHLS). The average age of the participants was 23.19 ± 3.34 years. The mean total score for CPUS-9 was 2.26 ± 1.34, for ASEX was 14.98 ± 6.80, and for SHLS was 57.65 ± 13.18. A weak positive correlation was found between CPUS-9 and SHLS, while a weak negative correlation was observed between ASEX and SHLS. According to regression analysis, as sexual dysfunction increased in women, cyber pornography use also increased (β = 0.550), resulting in a 0.57-unit increase. Furthermore, as sexual health literacy increased, cyber pornography use also increased (β = 0.190), leading to a 0.19-unit increase. The findings suggest that cyber pornography use in women is associated with sexual function and sexual health, and these associations may relate to individuals’ levels of sexual health literacy.

Petrochemistry and geochronology of Middle Eocene high-K calc-alkaline I-type Kazıkbeli pluton, NE Turkey: implications from zircon U-Pb ages and Sr-Nd-Pb-Lu-Hf isotope data

    Güloğlu, Zikrullah Samet; Kaygusuz, Abdullah

The Kazıkbeli pluton, located in the Kürtün (Gümüşhane) region of the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey, was studied by employing zircon U-Pb geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, Sr-Nd-Pb and zircon Lu-Hf isotope geochemistry. LA-ICP-MS U-Pb zircon dating revealed that the gabbroic diorite and granodiorite components of the pluton solidified during the Lutetian epoch of the Middle Eocene, at approximately 46.10 ± 0.26 Ma and 45.37 ± 0.29 Ma, respectively. The pluton is composed of calc-alkaline rocks, ranging from gabbroic diorite to granite (SiO2 = 55.3 to 72.4 wt%). These I-type rocks are typically metaluminous but exhibit peraluminous tendencies in some cases. They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and display concave chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns (LaN/YbN = 4.39 to 6.67) with negative Eu anomalies (EuN/Eu* = 0.45 to 0.80). The initial εNd values ranged from 1.85 to 2.24, and the initial 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios ranged from 0.70458 to 0.70484, consistent with a mantle source in the isotope ratio diagram. The initial 206Pb/204Pb(i), 207Pb/204Pb(i), and 208Pb/204Pb(i) ratios ranged from 18.505 to 18.571, 15.595 to 15.601, and 38.560 to 38.590, respectively. They have positive εHf(i) values (5.75 to 8.03), located between depleted mantle and chondrite evolution values. Fractional crystallization of plagioclase, hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxide minerals played a significant role in the magma evolution, while assimilation and magma mixing may have had a minor influence. Collectively, the evidence suggests that the primary magma source for these plutonic rocks was an enriched lithospheric mantle. Subsequent differentiation within crustal magma chambers, with limited crustal contamination, shaped the final magmatic evolution.

Green synthesis of iron and silver nanoparticles from aqueous extract of buckwheat husk waste: antibacterial, cytotoxic, and dye decolorization properties

Karpuz, Ömer; Baltacı, Cemalettin; Gül, Abdulkadir; Gülen, Jale; Bozbeyoğlu, Pınar; Aydoğan, Nebahat

Iron oxide (BHFeNP) and silver nanoparticles (BHAgNP) were produced using a green synthesis method through the extract of buckwheat husk (BH) waste to remove dye pollutants from water bodies in this study. The BHFeNP and BHAgNP were characterized by TEM, SEM, XRD, EDX, and FTIR techniques. Then, the methylene blue (MB) removal performance of the synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated. MB adsorption experiments showed that BHFeNPs were more dependent on temperature, adsorbent amount, and pH, while BHAgNPs notably depended on adsorbent amount, initial MB concentration, and pH. BHAgNPs had higher adsorption rates than BHFeNPs, and the Langmuir isotherm was more suitable for the adsorption process. BHAgNP and BHFeNP were shown to have the maximum adsorption capacities of 96.3 and 53.4 mg/g at pH 8 and 25 °C, respectively, in the presence of 0.25 g/L NP. Kinetic and thermodynamic calculations revealed that MB adsorption was spontaneously endothermic and supported the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The antibacterial potentials of BHFeNPs and BHAgNPs were investigated against two gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and two gram-positive (Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus) bacterial strains. BHAgNPs exhibited a higher antibacterial activity against the strains used. In cytotoxicity studies with ARPE-19, A549, HeLa, and DU-145 cell lines, it was observed that BHAgNP had a greater cell growth inhibition effect than BHFeNP and BH extract. Examining the morphological changes in the cells exhibited that BHAgNP significantly inhibited A549 and ARPE-19. Reusability studies of the generated NPs revealed MB removal capabilities of 92.5% and above after the fifth stage. The present study demonstrates that BHAgNP and BHFeNPs are viable nanoadsorbents for the elimination of environmental pollution due to their excellent removal performances and stable adsorbent characteristics.

One-Step Green Hydrothermal-Assisted Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots From Robinia hispida L. Flowers, and Flourimetric Detection of Au3+ Ions in Aqueous Media

    Başoğlu, Aysel

Water-soluble fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized via a single-step, eco-friendly hydrothermal process using Robinia hispida L. flowers as a novel carbon source. Advanced characterization techniques (HRTEM, XRD, XPS, FTIR, UV–vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy) revealed spherical CQDs with an average size of 3.96 ± 0.83 nm and a quantum yield of 5.13%. Under 365 nm UV light, the CQDs emitted blue fluorescence. Fluorescence quenching studies with various metal ions showed a significant 93.5% reduction in FL intensity with 500 μM Au3+ ions. At pH 7.0, a linear detection range of 0.5–3.5 μM was achieved, with limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 0.4 and 1.2 μM, respectively. The non-functionalized CQDs effectively detected Au3+ ions in tap, drinking, and river water, acidic mine drainage (sludge), and a standard reference material (CRMSA-C Sandy Soil C), achieving spike recoveries of 96.06%–101.71% with variability below 4.13%.

The First Surgery Experienced Through Virtual Reality: A Knee Surgery Case Report

Aydin, Aydanur; Menekşeoğlu, Ahmet Kıvanç; Öner, Kerim; Ertürk, Engin

The decision to undergo surgery and the significance of the operating theater environment are influenced by several factors, which vary from person to person. Negative perceptions of the operating room environment can influence the decision to undergo surgery and the process of treatment. Virtual reality (VR) technology offers the potential to alter individuals' environmental encounters through the provision of diverse environmental perceptions. This case study evaluates the results of a VR simulation applied during surgery to an individual with no previous surgical experience. A male patient scheduled for arthroscopic meniscus surgery was the subject of a VR simulation. The patient's perception of the simulated environment was transmitted through VR goggles from the time he entered the operating room until he left. However, the VR application was terminated during the administration of anesthesia, and no premedication was administered to the patient. The VR application included nature walks in various regions, including forests, lakeshores, and meadows, accompanied by the sound of birds. Data were collected using a visual analog scale to assess pain levels and a walking test form. The patient, a 35-year-old male, is a high school graduate and is undergoing his first surgical procedure. The patient expressed concerns and fears regarding the decision to undergo surgery. The patient's preoperative anxiety was rated at 9 out of 10 but subsequently decreased to 1 out of 10 following the surgical procedure. The patient rated his satisfaction with the surgical experience as 9 out of 10. The patient did not require sedatives or analgesics during the intraoperative period or for the first 10 hours following the operation. The patient was successfully mobilized at the 15-hour mark following surgery. The patient was highly satisfied with the application. The utilization of VR during surgical procedures has the potential to reduce the necessity for premedication and enhance postoperative compliance among patients.

Characterization of thermal, chemical, mechanical, and fatigue behavior of 3D printed ABS-based elastomeric blends: ABS/EVA and ABS/TPU

Kuleyin, Hamdi; Budak, Selahattin; Yasan, Ömer Barışkan; Gümrük, Recep

The polymer blending method is widely used to obtain balanced mechanical properties and structural performance in many engineering applications. This study investigates the influence of Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA), and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) composition ratios on the thermal, chemical, viscoelastic, mechanical, and fatigue life behavior of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) based elastomeric blends. For this purpose, structural and mechanical properties of the blend material depending on their composition ratio were carried out through a series of characterization analyses, and tensile and fatigue tests. The findings indicated that ABS/EVA and ABS/TPU blends formed an immiscible structure. In addition, it was determined that the storage modulus of the blend with 10 % TPU improved because of the presence of new absorption peaks in the structure. The mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength decreased concerning neat ABS with an increase in the EVA and TPU composition ratio for blend materials. However, the elongation to break was achieved approximately 6 times increasing with an increase in the TPU ratio for ABS/TPU blends. It was determined that the fatigue strength value in ABS/EVA and ABS/TPU blends decreased with the decrease in ABS composition ratio in the blend system. However, it was found that fatigue life improved by 25 % compared to ABS at low-stress amplitude for 10 % TPU additive. Finally, it can be revealed that the ABS-based elastomeric blends can be used to obtain desired properties according to their composition ratios for different applications.

Microencapsulation of Caucasian blueberries (Vaccinium arctostaphylos L.) anthocyanins: Colour stability in varying storage conditions

Girgin, Serpil; Üçüncü, Osman; Baltacı, Cemalettin; Muslu Aykoç, Ayşe

The aim of this study was to investigate the extraction of anthocyanins from the fruits of Caucasian blueberry (Vaccinium arctostaphylos L.) and examine the colour stability of anthocyanins encapsulated through spray drying in model systems. The trials were conducted to determine the optimal conditions for anthocyanin extraction using an ultrasonic water bath at temperatures of 25, 50 and 75°C. The ideal anthocyanin extraction occurred at 25°C using 100% acetone in an ultrasonic bath for 15 min at 35 kHz. Anthocyanin concentrations were evaluated using the pH differential method. The extracted anthocyanins were encapsulated through spray drying with maltodextrin as the encapsulating material. The encapsulation efficiency was 80.4 ± 0.20%, and the anthocyanin retention rate was 83.0 ± 0.76%. The coloured capsules were added to model systems with pH values of 4.50, 5.00, 5.50 and 6.00. The colour values (L* 50.16 ± 0.05, a* 4.08 ± 0.04, b* −9.35 ± 0.01, H° 293.57 ± 0.15, C* 10.20 ± 0.03) were measured during varying storage conditions. The results showed, that colour loss began on the fifth day and this was accelerated with higher temperatures and pH values. It was found that encapsulation significantly preserved the stability of the blue colour and the loss of the blue colour followed first-order reaction kinetics. The study showed that the blue colour of microcapsules was best preserved at pH 5.00 at 25°C. In this case, the measured total colour change (∆E) was 5.86, the activation energy (Ea) was 37.64 kJ/mol, and the half-life (t1/2) was determined to be 19.08 days.

Kurtun Dam oscillate characterization with landslide possible effect detection using InSAR observations

Celik, Fatih; Sanli, Fusun Balik; Celik, Kemal; Celik, Ayse

Observing and analyzing areas prone to landslides is crucial due to the extensive destructive capacity of landslides. To monitor landslide activities across diverse areas, remote sensing data and image processing methods are employed. This study proposes a method that integrates Multi-temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar and advanced temporal tracking technologies to intensify surveillance of the Kurtun Dam and its valley. According to Sentinel-1 A data, the net displacement rates of the dam crest varied between − 12 and 2 mm/year (LOS). InSAR technology surveys the entire dam catchment area, detecting critical infrastructure such as slopes, spillways, and access roads. The crest of the Kurtun Dam experiences oscillatory deformation during filling activities, but the lateral slopes and downstream abutment remain stable. As reservoir water levels rise, the dam structure exhibits downstream deformations, whereas declining water level results in upstream displacements. Monitoring points located the opposite Ozkurtun settlement and within the reservoir area, both facing the dam, exhibited displacement rates of up to -50 mm monthly. In regions susceptible to landslides, the greatest annual displacement rates were observed to be -54 and − 127 mm/year. This study suggests that integrating 3D modeling with InSAR technology into dam monitoring systems can significantly enhance their effectiveness. At Kurtun Dam and other crucial locations within the catchment area, the integrated approach combined with topographic monitoring, ensures reliable landslide detection and analysis. By advancing monitoring technology for embankment dams, this strategy prioritizes safety and structural integrity assessments.

Cosmetological potential of the essential oil from the aerial parts of Rubus sanctus Schreb.: Enzymatic inhibition, antibacterial properties, and chemical composition

Yıldırım, Aybeniz; Celep, İnci Kurt; Gül, Abdulkadir

Recently, skin care products and cosmetic preparations with herbal ingredients have attracted considerable interest from the public. Therefore, the cosmetic industry is investigating natural products like essential oils and extracts. This study aimed to determine the anti-aging effects of the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of Rubus sanctus Schreb. (RsEO), as well as to reveal its chemical composition and investigate its antibacterial activity. The chemical composition of RsEO was determined by using GC-MS. The anti-aging activity of RsEO was evaluated by in vitro studies of anti-collagenase, anti-elastase, anti-tyrosinase, and anti-hyaluronidase activities. The antibacterial potential of RsEO was investigated by the agar-well diffusion method against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Escherichia coli. RsEO showed significant inhibition against collagenase, elastase, hyaluronidase, and tyrosinase with IC50 values of 80.46, 77.85, 72.71, and 82.71 μg/mL, respectively, and when compared with the positive controls epigallocatechin gallate (IC50: 38.91 μg/mL for collagenase, IC50: 38.91 μg/mL for elastase), tannic acid (IC50: 26.95 μg/mL for hyaluronidase), and kojic acid (IC50: 28.74 μg/mL for tyrosinase), the activities were found to be close. It was determined that the major components of RsEO were pentadecanal (8.88%), dodecanoic acid (7.86%), nonanal (4.32%), and octadecanal (4.08%). RsEO showed moderate antibacterial activity (inhibition zones between 10 and 15 mm) against the tested bacteria compared to ampicillin. This study demonstrated that RsEO is a natural product that has the potential to serve as a promising anti-aging and antibacterial therapeutic agent due to the synergistic effect of its constituent components.

DSCIMABNet: A novel multi-head attention depthwise separable CNN model for skin cancer detection

    Reis, Hatice Catal; Turk, Veysel

Skin cancer is a common type of cancer worldwide. Early diagnosis of skin cancer can reduce the risk of death by increasing treatment success. However, it is challenging for dermatologists or specialists because the symptoms are vague in the early stages and cannot be noticed by the naked eye. This study examines digital diagnostic techniques supported by artificial intelligence, focusing on early skin cancer detection and two methods have been proposed. In the first method, DSCIMABNet deep learning architecture was developed by combining multi-head attention and depthwise separable convolution techniques. This model provides flexibility in learning the dataset's local features, abstract concepts, and long-term relationships. The DSCIMABNet model and modern deep learning models trained on ImageNet are proposed to be combined with the ensemble learning method in the second method. This approach provides a comprehensive feature extraction process that will increase the performance of the classification process with ensemble learning. The proposed approaches are trained and evaluated on the ISIC 2018 dataset with image enhancement applied in preprocessing. In the experimental results, DSCIMABNet achieved 84.28% accuracy, while the proposed hybrid method achieved 99.40% accuracy. Moreover, on the Mendeley dataset (CNN for Melanoma Detection Data), DSCIMABNet achieved 92.58% accuracy, while the hybrid method achieved 99.37% accuracy. This study may significantly contribute to developing new and effective methods for the early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

Cardiovascular Findings and Effects of Caffeine on Experimental Hypothyroidism

    Yuksel, Duygu; Ozmen, Ozlem

Background: Thyroid hormone deficiencies can disrupt organ functions, significantly impacting the cardiovascular system. Recently, the effects of thyroid hormones on the heart have garnered increased attention. However, most studies are conducted on humans using clinical data, while cellular-level and experimental studies remain limited. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the cardiovascular implications of hypothyroidism and evaluate the impact of caffeine on cardiac health in rats induced with hypothyroidism using propylthiouracil (PTU). Methods: The study involved 60 rats divided into six groups. Group 1 served as the untreated control. Group 2 received PTU for two months to induce hypothyroidism. Group 3 received PTU for one month, followed by caffeine for one month. Group 4 received caffeine for two months. Group 5 received both PTU and caffeine simultaneously for two months. Group 6 received PTU for one month, followed by one month under normal conditions. Results: During necropsy, normal thyroid glands were observed in Groups 1, 4, and 6, enlarged thyroids in Group 2, and smaller thyroids in Groups 3 and 5. Microscopic examination revealed varying thyroid histologies: Group 2 showed significant epithelial cell proliferation and absent colloid, while Groups 3, 5, and 6 had altered yet colloid-containing acini. Macroscopic inspection of hearts appeared normal across all groups. However, histopathological examination revealed significant hyperemia and microhemorrhages in Group 2, contrasting with normal findings in other groups. Immunohistochemical analysis indicated reduced cardiac troponin expression in Group 2, while other groups maintained prominent expression. Additionally, Group 2 displayed increased serum TSH levels and decreased T3 and T4 levels. Conclusion: The findings suggest that administering caffeine alongside or after PTU treatment in rats with experimentally induced hypothyroidism may ameliorate thyroid and cardiac irregularities. This study indicates caffeine's potential in mitigating the adverse effects of hypothyroidism on thyroid and heart health.

This study aims to determine the extent of the psychological effects of the Kahramanmaraş earthquake disaster, which is widely regarded as one of the most significant disasters of the century, on young people based on their direct or indirect exposure and to investigate the impact of these issues on life satisfaction. Data were collected from 337 individuals who were continuing their advanced education at a state university in Turkey, using a demographic information form, life satisfaction scale and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21. In the analysis of the data, t-test, Pearson correlation test, ANOVA and multiple regression analysis were employed. The results of the analyses indicated that as the intensity of exposure to disaster news increased, the stress, depression, and anxiety levels of the participants also increased. Individuals who experienced the earthquake personally and participated in volunteer aid activities demonstrated higher depression and anxiety scores and DASS21 scale total scores than those who did not directly experience the earthquake but followed the news and those whose relatives experienced the earthquake. There was no significant difference in the intensity of following earthquake news between men and women among the participants. However, it was determined that the intensity of following earthquake news from media and social media tools positively and significantly predicted the life satisfaction of the participants. These findings provide insights for future mental health interventions and social work practices for young people affected by the earthquake.

MOHO DEPTH IN THE SOUTH CASPIAN BASIN ESTIMATED FROM GRAVITY FIELD DATA AND LOCATION OF HYDROCARBON RESERVOIRS

    Kadirov, F.A.; Safarov, R.T.; Gahramanov, M.R.; Maden, N.M.

The South Caspian Basin (SCB) is a geologically complex and diverse region of significant scientific interest due to its hydrocarbon resources and intricate crustal structure. This study provides an updated interpretation of the SCB’s crustal configuration using gravity-derived data, with particular emphasis on delineating Moho depth and the influence of its variations on petroleum basins. The crustal structure of the basin is assessed using Bouguer gravity anomalies, incorporating terrestrial and marine gravity measurements, and processed with spectral analysis methods. Power spectrum analysis was applied to estimate the depths of subsurface mass distributions affecting the gravity field, enabling separation of regional and residual anomalies and providing an initial reference depth of Moho. These results served as input for Parker–Oldenburg inversion, an iterative Fourier-based technique used to model the Moho surface by minimizing discrepancies between observed and calculated gravity anomalies. The integrated approach reveals substantial lateral variations in Moho depth, ranging from approximately 42 km in the Absheron–Prebalkhan zone to about 29 km in the central SCB. Analysis of spatial correlations indicates that oil and gas reservoirs are primarily located in areas where the Moho surface is deeper and along gradient zones marking abrupt depth changes. These findings enhance understanding of the complex tectonic evolution of the SCB and provide valuable constraints for predicting potential hydrocarbon locations in this tectonically active and data-scarce region.

Investigation of the relationship between attitudes toward migration and life satisfaction of nurses working in Turkey

Tuncer, Metin; Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Turan, Şeyma; Khorshtd, Leyla

Background: Nurse migration contributes to the nursing shortage in developing countries. Understanding nurses' attitudes toward migration and related factors is crucial for policy-making and healthcare workforce planning in Turkey. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between nurses' attitudes toward migration and their life satisfaction in Turkey. Methods: The study included working nurses with social media accounts on a social media platform in Turkey who followed nursing-related content. A sample of 423 nurses completed an online survey. Independent variables included nurses' sociodemographic characteristics and inclination toward migration, while dependent variables were life satisfaction and migration attitude levels. Data were collected via an online questionnaire, incorporating the Brain Drain Attitude Scale (BDAS) and Life Satisfaction Scale (LSS), between April and May 2023. Results: The study found a negative correlation between nurses' life satisfaction levels and their attitudes toward migration (r = −.349, p <.001). Nurses dissatisfied with their profession (F = 6.575, p <.05), lacking professional support (F = 8.641, p <.05), and lacking social support (F = 6.307, p <.05) scored higher on the BDAS. Conversely, those satisfied with their profession (F = 31.455, p <.05), receiving professional support (F = 26.307, p <.05), and social support (F = 33.990, p <.05) scored higher on the LSS. Conclusion and implications for nursing: The study revealed that decreased life satisfaction among nurses in Turkey correlates with increased migration attitudes. These results underscore the need for strategies to enhance nurses' job satisfaction and support systems to mitigate migration tendencies. This study contributes valuable insights into the high inclination of Turkish nurses toward emigration.

Comparison of different animal milks on microbiological, physicochemical, sensory properties, and volatile component profile of Kefir

Meral-Aktaş, Hacer; Ürkek, Bayram; Aktaş, Haktan; Baltacı, Cemalettin; Çetin, Bülent; Şengül, Mustafa

In this study, the effects of cow, buffalo, ewe, and goat milk on the microbiological, physicochemical, sensory properties, and volatile component profile of kefir were examined during storage. Key microbial counts, including lactic cocci, lactic bacilli, and yeast, varied among kefirs, with lactic bacilli and lactic cocci decreasing over time, while yeast counts increased. The titratable acidity ranged from 1.12 to 1.16%, and pH values varied between 4.51 and 4.83. Sensory analysis showed that cow milk kefir received the highest consumer appreciation, while goat milk kefir was least favored. Notably, ewe milk kefir contained the highest benzoic acid content. Principal component analysis identified distinct clusters in the volatile profiles of the kefirs. Our results suggest that buffalo and ewe milk kefirs may be viable alternatives to cow milk kefir, with potential for consumer acceptance based on sensory properties.
