Do University-Industry Collaborations Promote Outward Foreign Direct Investments? The Moderating Effect of the Education System

    Sahin, Fatih

University-industry collaborations have gained increasing recognition as a key indicator of innovation ecosystems in recent years. However, existing literature often overlooks the expanding and diversifying roles of universities, focusing primarily on their impact on innovation. This study seeks to address this gap by exploring the effects of university-industry collaborations on outward foreign direct investment (FDI) activities in underdeveloped and developing countries, which face significant disadvantages in terms of technological and innovative resources. Additionally, it examines the regulatory role of the quality of the education system, which is believed to influence the effectiveness of these collaborations in fostering outward FDI. Using a sample of 80 underdeveloped and developing countries, panel regression analysis was conducted on secondary data covering the years 2013-2022. The findings reveal that university-industry collaborations positively influence crossborder investments, with these effects being stronger in countries with higher levels of education expenditures. These positive effects, however, disappear in contexts where education expenditures are low. This study makes important theoretical contributions to the and developing countries, highlighting the significance of university collaborations and the education system, in contrast to firm-specific resources. It also provides valuable policy recommendations for decision-makers in these countries.

Earthquake Performance Analysis and Retrofitting of an Existing School Building by Different Methods

    Çavdar, Ozlem

Concrete structures designed prior to the implementation of modern building codes are still in use today. These structures are known for their inadequate design and poor performance during earthquakes. In this study, a performance analysis was conducted on an existing school structure in Istanbul, Turkey. The reasons for the damage were explored, and the structure was evaluated to determine the necessity for strengthening, the potential strengthening methods, and the appropriate comparison. Finally, recommendations were presented based on the available data from this study. The building was constructed in 1996 and has calculation reports and a static project. Linear and nonlinear methods were employed to determine the earthquake safety of structures after a mathematical model was created. The earthquake resistance of both the existing and retrofitting states of the school building was analyzed using linear and nonlinear analysis methods. The controlled damage limit could not be determined due to the high seismic intensity. A retrofit project has been devised for this low seismic performance building, comprising column jacketing, wrapping of beams with FRP, and the addition of shear walls.

Particle board production using paper mill waste sludge and European black pine (Pinus nigra A.) wood chips

    Karahan, Selim; Tekel, Muharrem

Paper mills use excessive amounts of water throughout production to produce paper. While mills treat water for reuse, sludge is generated and must be processed as a waste, along with some washing water. In this study, waste sludge from a kraft process mill mixed with up to 40% black pine (Pinus nigra) wood chips was investigated for multi-purpose board production using urea formaldehyde resin and ammonium chloride as a hardener. The panels were pressed at 150 degrees C for 7 minutes between 2.4 MPa and 2.6 MPa. The resulting panels were 18 mm thick, with a density of from 0.69 gr/cm3 to 0.71 g/cm3. Measurements of density, moisture, water absorption, thickness swelling, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bond strength to the surface were carried out on the particle board panels. The results indicated that panels could be used for general purposes.

The Interactional Role of Dysfunctional Attitudes in the Relationship Between Religiosity and Existential

    Ericek Maraslioglu, Serife

According to the findings of the Turkish General Social Survey (TGSS), feelings of loneliness are more prevalent among young people. Due to the frequent changes in values, emotions and thoughts that characterise individuals during this period of life, it can be said that they are particularly vulnerable to loneliness. Existential loneliness, a deeper form of loneliness, is also referred to as ultimate loneliness. Potential triggers for young individuals to experience existential loneliness include meaninglessness and the inability to make oneself understood or express one's feelings. However, loneliness has been associated with various mental and physical health problems, there is insufficient research on individuals experiencing existential loneliness during adolescence. Against this backdrop, the present study aims to examine the mediating role of dysfunctional attitudes in the relationship between religiosity and existential loneliness in individuals in early adulthood. Ethical approval for the study was granted by the G & uuml;m & uuml;& scedil;hane University Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee on 28/05/2025 (approval number 2025/5). The study included 408 participants (294 women and 114 men) aged between 18 and 29. Data were obtained using the Religiosity Scale, the Existential Loneliness Scale , and the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale. These were analysed using IBM SPSS AMOS and the PROCESS add-on module for SPSS. Correlation analysis revealed that religiosity was negatively associated with existential loneliness and dysfunctional attitudes, while existential loneliness and dysfunctional attitudes were positively associated with each other. Additionally, the analyses revealed that dysfunctional attitudes played a mediating role in the relationship between religiosity and existential loneliness. The mediation analysis conducted within the scope of the study was performed using the PROCESS macro (Model 4). Interventions targeting dysfunctional attitudes and promoting a healthier self-concept/self-image could be crucial in safeguarding young adults against existential loneliness. These results shed light on potential psychological mechanisms that explain the effect of religiosity on loneliness experienced by young people.

Fragile Routes: The Impact of Israel's Confrontational Policies on Trade Routes

    Sancak, Kadir

The geopolitical position of the Middle East has a strategic value in the functioning of Eurasian trade routes. Accordingly, security issues in the region directly affect the realization and sustainability of trade projects. Israels Palestinian policies disrupt the security balance in the Middle East, posing risks to major trade projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the IMEC Project and the Development Road. Recognizing that trade and security are inextricably linked, this study examines the current state and future of these projects from a security perspective. Based on a comprehensive literature review using qualitative analysis, this study evaluates the effects of instability in the Middle East on trade routes. The study reveals that trade projects in the region will be at risk of instability unless security issues are resolved. The first part of the study discusses the relationship between trade and security in a conceptual framework. Then, Israel's Palestinian policies are briefly touched upon and it is stated that these policies negatively affect the security of the Middle East. In the last part, major trade projects are discussed and how these projects are affected by Israel's policies. The findings show that the Southern Corridor of the Belt and Road Initiative has a fragile structure, the IMEC Project cannot be realized due to security problems, and the Development Road offers a more reliable alternative under current conditions. If security and stability cannot be ensured in the Middle East, it is anticipated that it will be difficult for trade projects to operate permanently and effectively.

Electricity in Ottoman Commercial Enterprises as a New Power Source

    Damlibag, Fatih

Until the last quarter of 19th century, steam power was the only available source of power for commercial enterprises. But this power required large amounts of investment. This requirement limited the spread of mechanization. But the invention of electrical motors changed the situation. With its practical usage opportunities, electricity took attention of several commercial enterprises in the Ottoman Empire. According to former steam power, electricity provides both usage easiness and lesser cost opportunity to commercial enterprises. Thanks to electrical engines, relatively small businesses were also able to take decision of mechanization. In this article, there were shown examples from six sectors, who wanted to benefit from electricity in their activities. Entrepreneurs made investments in mining, logistics, jewelry, transportation, ginning and milling, for this new technology. With electricity investments, entrepreneurs wanted to reach seven advantages that there were communication possibility, safer working environment, energy efficiency, better lighting, easy utilization, reduced cost and increased productivity. As to the Ottoman government's approach to these entrepreneurs, the officials did not always eagerly meet their demands. Most of the custom officials were reluctant to accept electrical appliances into the country. But in the end, demands of entrepreneurs were mostly accepted by the government. For the control of these demands, the Ottoman Empire wanted both the purpose of each request and the person responsible for that request to be clearly determined.

Determinants of Tax Compliance: Ethical and Economic Values, Social Norms and Perception of Corruption

    Yelboga, Alim; Özdemir, Hakan

Using data from the World Values Survey (2017-2021), this study examines the impact of factors such as ethical values, social norms, and perceived corruption on tax compliance, employing an ordered logistic regression analysis. The findings indicate that individuals' ethical values are the strongest determinant of tax compliance, whereas perceived corruption has a statistically significant but comparatively weaker effect. While a significant portion of the findings are consistent with existing literature, the study's clearer demonstration of the relative impact of ethical values compared to other factors constitutes a complementary contribution to the literature. Overall, the results confirm that tax compliance is shaped not only by economic incentives but also by individuals' values and perceptions. The findings demonstrate the importance of strengthening ethical values and social trust in enhancing voluntary tax compliance.

Interactional Roles of Proactive Personality and Religious Attitude Levels in the Effect of Disappointment Intolerance on Mental Health of Earthquake Victims

    Maraslioglu, Serife Ericek

Earthquakes, as natural disasters, are stressful life events characterized by frustration, uncertainty, and psychological burden. In fact, disappointment intolerance - the inability to tolerate distressing or obstructive experiences - has been shown to predict both life satisfaction and depressive symptoms. The present study aims to examine the mediating role of proactive personality in the relationship between disappointment intolerance beliefs and mental health, as well as the moderating role of religious attitudes in this relationship among earthquake victims living in container cities after the 6 February earthquakes. The participants were survivors residing in the region's most severely affected materially and morally by the earthquake centered in Kahramanmara & scedil;, T & uuml;rkiye. Data were collected from 354 individuals 18 months after the earthquake using the Demographic Information Form, Frustration Discomfort Scale, Proactive Personality Scale, Religious Attitude Scale, and Mental Health Scale. Pearson correlation, mediation, and moderation analyses were conducted. The findings indicated that higher levels of frustration intolerance were associated with increased levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Furthermore, proactive personality was found to mediate the effect of disappointment intolerance subdimensions (entitlement, achievement, emotional intolerance, and discomfort intolerance) on mental health outcomes. However, religious attitudes did not moderate the negative impact of disappointment intolerance on depression, anxiety, and stress. The results are discussed considering existing literature, and implications for future research and intervention strategies are offered.

    Bingöl, Ozhan

PurposeThis study aims to propose a novel fractional-order neural network-based fixed-time sliding mode controller to address the challenges of chaotic satellite attitude control, synchronization and anti-synchronization. By integrating fractional-order dynamics and neural network-based estimation, the proposed approach enhances robustness and adaptability in stabilizing complex systems.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed control scheme introduces a novel sliding surface that leverages fractional calculus to improve convergence speed and control flexibility. A neural network is used to adaptively estimate unknown error dynamics, compensating for uncertainties in the system. The fixed-time stability property guarantees convergence within a predefined time, independent of initial conditions. Theoretical stability proofs and numerical simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed controller.FindingsThe results demonstrate that the proposed controller effectively stabilizes chaotic satellite attitude dynamics and ensures reliable synchronization and anti-synchronization. The approach exhibits strong robustness against system uncertainties and external disturbances while achieving fixed-time convergence.Originality/valueThis work advances the field by integrating fractional-order dynamics with a neural network-based adaptive mechanism in a fixed-time sliding mode control framework. The proposed method enhances convergence properties and robustness in controlling chaotic satellite attitude systems, providing a novel and effective solution for complex nonlinear dynamics.

Emengen, Atakan; Yilmaz, Eren; Gokbel, Aykut; Uzuner, Ayse; Cakir, Ozgur; Ciftci, Ercument; Ozsoy, Bedrettin; Ergen, Anil; Caklili, Melih; Cabuk, Burak

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) is the preferred approach for treating sellar and parasellar lesions due to its panoramic view and detailed anatomical definition. This study aims to review major arterial injuries during EES, a rare but critical complication associated with high mortality and morbidity rates.METHODS:A retrospective analysis was conducted, including 15 patients from 5640 EES procedures performed between August 1997 and February 2024 at in our center/Department of Neurosurgery. The study focuses on perioperative and postoperative management strategies, highlighting the use of oxidized regenerated cellulose (Surgicel (R))/gelatin-thrombin matrix (Floseal (R)) and multidisciplinary collaboration to achieve hemostasis.RESULTS:The incidence of major arterial injury was 0.2%, with a mean patient age of 38.4 years and a female-to-male ratio of 10:5. The most common tumors were adenomas (n = 7) and chordomas (n = 5). The most commonly bleeding arteries in 6 patients each are the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery and the paraclival carotid artery. Low-flow bleeding was observed in 10 of our patients, while high-flow bleeding was seen in 5 patients, 4 of whom were recurrent cases (P < .05). In 3 patients with high-flow bleeding from segments of the carotid artery, digital subtraction angiography was performed for stent placement or coil embolization, while in 1 patient with high-flow bleeding, digital subtraction angiography was used for monitoring cerebral blood flow. One of our patients died of a myocardial infarction at the 14th month of follow-up and 1 of our patients developed left-hemiparesis.CONCLUSION:The study underscores the importance of preoperative planning, surgical expertise, and multidisciplinary teamwork in managing major arterial injuries during EES. The authors advocate for the development of standardized treatment algorithms to improve outcomes in these patients. The findings contribute to the limited literature on managing internal carotid artery injuries in EES, emphasizing the need for ongoing research and algorithm development.

Purely endoscopic endonasal resection of extracranial trigeminal schwannomas: a descriptive systematic review and institutional case series

Yilmaz, Eren; Emengen, Atakan; Uzuner, Ayse; Ozsoy, Bedrettin; Gokbel, Aykut; Anik, Ihsan; Ceylan, Savas

Background: Trigeminal schwannomas (TSs) are uncommon, benign tumors that arise from the trigeminal nerve. They can spread to the middle cranial fossa, posterior fossa, and extracranially (pterygopalatine fossa (PPF), infratemporal fossa, orbita). Among these, extracranial involvement is the least frequent. Before the advent of endoscopic techniques, these tumors were primarily removed using conventional microsurgical approaches. Due to both the rarity of extracranial localization and the increasing use of endoscopic techniques in suitable cases, reports of TSs with extracranial involvement treated via a purely endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) remain limited, typically appearing as case reports or a small subset within larger case series. This study systematically reviews the literature on extracranial TSs managed exclusively with EEA and presents two illustrative cases from our institution. Methods: A systematic search of the PubMed database was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines to identify studies that utilized a purely EEA for extracranial TS cases. Additionally, a retrospective review of 6118 EEA procedures conducted at our institution identified two patients with histopathologically confirmed extracranial TSs. Clinical presentation, surgical approach, outcomes, and complications were analyzed. Results: A total of 147 records were identified through database searches and reference lists. After removing duplicate records, 144 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility. Of these, 124 studies were excluded with justification, resulting in 23 studies being included in the review. When combined with our institutional cases, data from a total of 52 patients were analyzed. Facial numbness was the most common presenting symptom (70.5 %). The mean tumor diameter was 38.6 +/- 13.3 mm, and the gross total resection rate was 93.1 %. In our cases, both patients successfully underwent tumor resection via EEA without postoperative neurological deficits. Conclusions: EEA provides a direct, minimally invasive route for managing extracranial TSs while reducing the morbidity associated with transcranial approaches. Although optimal for purely extracranial tumors, lesions extending into the middle or posterior fossa may require a combined approach. Therefore, individualized surgical planning is essential for achieving optimal outcomes in TS management.

Pan-immune-inflammation value predicts sustained ventricular arrhythmias in NSTEMI: a novel inflammatory risk marker

Sahin, Yusuf Bozkurt; Tanik, Veysel Ozan; Koçu, Gokturk Kaan; Özkan, Mehmet Taha; Akdogan, Murat; Seçkin, Ozden; Tunca, Cagatay; Sezgin, Ali; Akbuga, Kursat; Özlek, Bulent

BackgroundSystemic inflammation contributes to arrhythmogenesis in acute coronary syndromes, but its role in NSTEMI-related ventricular arrhythmias remains poorly defined. The pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV) is a novel composite biomarker reflecting immune and thrombotic activity derived from routine blood counts. This study aimed to assess the association between PIV and the risk of sustained VT/VF in NSTEMI.MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, 1,788 NSTEMI patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention were analyzed. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of sustained VT or VF during hospitalization. PIV was calculated as (neutrophil x platelet x monocyte)/lymphocyte. Logistic regression, ROC analysis, Kaplan - Meier curves, reclassification indices (NRI, IDI), and restricted cubic spline modeling were used.ResultsVT/VF occurred in 34 patients (1.9%). Those with VT/VF had significantly higher PIV values (median 1132 vs. 329, p < 0.001). In multivariable analysis, PIV remained an independent predictor (OR: 1.356 per 1000 unit increase; 95% CI: 1.028-1.787; p = 0.031). The risk of VT/VF rose progressively across PIV quartiles (Q4 vs. Q1 OR: 4.0, p for trend < 0.001). Adding PIV to conventional predictors improved risk classification (NRI: +0.089; IDI: 0.007). Kaplan - Meier analysis showed significantly reduced arrhythmia-free survival in high-PIV tertiles (log-rank p < 0.001), and cubic spline modeling revealed a non-linear association with increased arrhythmic risk at higher PIV levels.ConclusionsElevated PIV is independently associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias in NSTEMI. As an accessible biomarker, PIV may aid early arrhythmic risk stratification and guide clinical surveillance strategies.

EFFECT OF TRAPEZIUS MUSCLE THICKNESS ON THE ONE-REPETITION MAXIMUM (1RM) STRENGTH

Yilmaz, Coskun; Ceylan, Tulay; Altunbas, Adem; Soylu, Hakan Huseyin; Kavuran, Korhan; Söyler, Mehmet

Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of trapezius muscle thickness measurements on bench press single repetition maximum (1RM) power output. Material and Methods: The study included 13 male bodybuilders who participated in national and international professional natural bodybuilding competitions and 13 healthy sedentary male subjects. Body composition, 1RM values and ultrasonographic measurements of trapezius muscle thickness were obtained from the participants. Results: The findings revealed that both the skin-to-superficial muscle tissue (R1, L1) and skin-to-deep fascia (R2, L2) distances were significantly lower in sedentary individuals compared to bodybuilders (p<0.001). Additionally, 1RM strength output was significantly higher in bodybuilders than in sedentary individuals. In sedentary individuals, a moderate negative correlation was observed between the distance between superficial muscle and 1RM, and a low positive correlation was observed between the distance between deep fascia and skin surface. In contrast, a low negative correlation was found in both parameters in bodybuilders. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that trapezius muscle thickness is significantly lower in sedentary individuals compared to bodybuilders, both in superficial and deep tissue layers. We believe that the skin surface imaging method used in our study could be an effective tool for predicting injuries in athletes. Additionally, we believe that regular imaging follow-ups in athletes could provide important information about adaptations in muscle structures resulting from applied training stimuli.

EZH2 status was correlated with demographic, clinical, and pathologic features, and overall survival was analyzed with the Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test.ResultsA total of 124 cases of CRC; 12 (9.7%) cases were classified as low EZH2 expression, and 112 (90.3%) cases were classified as high EZH2 expression. A significant association was found between EZH2 expression and microsatellite stability. High EZH2 expression was significantly enriched in microsatellite-stable tumors (p = 0.007) and in left-sided lesions (p = 0.049). No significant associations were detected with sex, stage, grade, lymph-node status, or vascular invasion. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed no difference in overall survival between low- and high-EZH2 groups (log-rank p = 0.47; hazard ratio = 1.13, 95% CI 0.45-2.85). EZH2 staining was uniformly strong in normal mucosa and adenomas, mirroring the high expression observed in most CRCs.ConclusionsEZH2 is highly expressed across the normal-adenoma-carcinoma sequence and, in our cohort, was not linked to overall survival or to most clinicopathologic parameters in CRC. The lower expression observed in a subset of MSI-H tumors warrants further investigation; present evidence remains insufficient to establish EZH2 as an independent prognostic biomarker.
