Aksakal, Vecihi; Yanar, Mete; Bayram, Bahri
The data on breeding and performance records of Swedish Red and White (SRW) cows kept in a private organic dairy farm in Kelkit, Turkey, during the period from 2006 through 2009 were used to study the effect of some non-genetic factors such as calving year, calving season, parity, age of dam and sex of calf on the various milk and reproductive traits. The actual lactation milk yield, daily milk yield, peak daily milk, days to attain milk yield and lactation length averaged as 5887.2±94.9 kg, 19.9±0.3 kg, 31.5±0.3 kg, 79.4±2.7 days and 302.5±3.2 days, respectively. The actual lactation milk yield, days to attain peak milk yield and lactation length were significantly affected by calving year and calving season. The effect of the parity on the daily milk yield, peak daily milk yield and days to attain peak milk yield were significant (P<0.01). The least squares means for calving interval and gestation length were 380.2±4.3 days and 275.4±0.6 days, respectively. Age of dam and calving season significantly (P<0.01) affected the days open. Mean age at first calving of SRW cows raised organically was 26.4±0.2 months and was significantly affected by the calving years. Significant (P<0.01) and positive phenotypic correlations of the actual lactation milk yield with daily milk yield (r = 0.71), peak milk yield (r = 0.53), lactation length (r = 0.53), days open (r = 0.43), calving interval (r = 0.36) and days attain to peak milk yield (r = 0.14) (P<0.05) were determined. In conclusion, the significant effects of environmental variables must be taken into consideration when developing and comparing models to be used in adjusting data to provide the best estimates of genetic values and parameters in evaluation of SRW cattle reared organically in Turkey.

Döner, Fatih; Thompson, Rod; Stoter, Jantien; Lemmen, Christiaan; Ploeger, Hendrik; van Oosterom, Peter; Zlatanova, Sisi
The increasing complexity and flexibility of modern land use requires that cadastres need an improved capacity to manage the third dimension. As the world is per definition not static, there also will be needs in relation to the representation of the temporal (fourth) dimension either integrated with the spatial dimensions or as separate attribute(s). In this paper, registration of utility networks in cadastre are considered in this 3D. +. time (=4D) context. A number of countries in the world have developed methods to register utility networks complying with their legal, organizational, and technical structure. We researched the different approaches of three specific countries: Turkey, The Netherlands and Queensland, Australia. These are analysed to evaluate a solution that matches legal, organizational, and technical cadastral requirements in the most optimal way.

Alici, A.; Kement, M.; Gezen, C.; Akın, T.; Vural, S.; Okkabaz, N.; Basturk, E.; Yegenoglu, A.; Oncel, M.
Background: What level of arterial ligation is best in left-sided colon cancer and rectal cancer remains controversial. This study aims to assess the necessity and risk of high ligation from an oncological and technical perspective. Methods: The lymph nodes at the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) were separated as apical nodes in all patients operated for distal colorectal cancer in our department. The number and status of the nodes were prospectively assessed, and demographic and tumor-related variables were evaluated as risk factors for apical tumor invasion. Anastomotic leaks were also evaluated. Results: A hundred and three patients (52 [50.5%] males, 60.3 ± 12.9 years old) were included. The number of non-apical lymph nodes harvested was 14.5 ± 7.1 with an additional 4.4 ± 3.2 apical nodes at the high ligation site. Tumor invasion of apical nodes was observed in 6 (5.8%) patients. Two of these (1.9%) had no other positive nodes (skip metastases). Although none of the variables evaluated was found significant for predicting apical node positivity, tumor invasion was detected in 8.5 and 22.2% of patients with pT3 and pN2 cancers, respectively. Among patients, who had an anastomosis (n = 84, 81.6%), anastomotic leak was observed in 7(8.3%) and 1 (1.2%) of these patients required emergency relaparotomy. There was no mortality related to high ligation. Conclusions: High ligation of IMA may be routinely performed in patients with distal colorectal cancer, since tumor invasion of apical lymph nodes is neither rare (>5%) nor predictable, and skip metastases may also occur. This is especially true in case of an advanced disease for which apical node positivity peaks. The anastomotic leak rate is less than 10%, and mortality is low after high ligation of IMA.

Background: Axillary lymph nodes (ALNs) are the most important prognostic factor for survival in breast cancer. Pathological evaluation can affect the number of involved lymph nodes. In the current study, we evaluated whether the metastatic lymph node ratio (n ratio) is important in predicting disease-free survival (DFS) for breast cancer patients. Material and Methods: From 802 breast cancer cases, 427 patients with ALN metastasis were analyzed retrospectively. The n ratio was categorized as n ratio 1 (1-10%), n ratio 2 (10.01-50%) and n ratio 3 (>50%). DFS was established according to the Kaplan-Meier method. Predicting risk factors for relapse were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: The n ratio was significantly higher in breast cancer patients with advanced pathologic pT, pN and clinical stage, undifferentiated histology, lymphovascular and extracapsular invasion, more resected ALNs and positive progesterone receptor. In the univariate analysis, multicentricity, necrosis, grade, pN stage, estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor positivity, trastuzumab and neoadjuvant chemotherapy usage, the presence of inflammatory breast cancer and n ratio were found to be important factors in predicting DFS. Multivariate analysis indicated that multicentricity, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, trastuzumab usage and n ratio were significantly associated with prognosis. Conclusions: The n ratio is inexpensive, easily available and a simple prognostic factor for breast cancer patients with positive ALNs.

Çavdar, Özlem; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Adanur, Süleyman; Başaǧa, Hasan Basri
Stochastic seismic analysis of long-span bridges with Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) cables are presented in this study through combination of the advantages of the perturbation based stochastic finite element method (SFEM) and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method. Jindo cable-stayed and Fatih Sultan Mehmet (Second Bosporus) suspension bridges are chosen as an example. Carbon fibre reinforced polymer cable (CFRP) and steel cables are used separately, in which the cable's cross sectional area is determined by the principle equivalent axial stiffness. Geometric nonlinear effects are considered in the analysis. Uncertainties in the material are taken into account and Kocaeli earthquake in 1999 is chosen as a ground motion. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm are validated by comparing with results of MCS method. It can be stated that using of CFRP cables in long-span bridges subjected to earthquake forces is feasible.

Küçük, Haydar; Gedikli, Hasan
The natural convection is numerically investigated in a roof of triangular cross section under constant heat flux with seven different values depending on daylight on the inclined wall, constant wall temperature on the bottom wall and adiabatic on the vertical wall boundary conditions. Continuity, momentum and energy equations are solved by using fmite volume method for laminar, two-dimensional and steady-state regime. Streamlines, isothenns, local and mean Nusselt numbers are p̧resented for AR=0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 and Ra=103, 104, 105, 106. The amount of heat flux ranges from 163 W/m2 to 808 W/m2 depending on daylight and the Prandtl number is chosen as 0.7. It is found out that the aspect ratio and Rayleigh number highly affect the heat transfer on the bottom and inclined walls while heat flux slightly affects.

Karsli, Orhan; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Uysal, Ibrahim; Aydin, Faruk; Chen, Bin; Kandemir, Raif; Wijbrans, Jan
We present elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data for the magmatic suite (~79 Ma) of the Harşit pluton, from the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey), with the aim of determining its magma source and geodynamic evolution. The pluton comprises granite, granodiorite, tonalite and minor diorite (SiO2 = 59.43-76.95 wt%), with only minor gabbroic diorite mafic microgranular enclaves in composition (SiO2 = 54.95-56.32 wt%), and exhibits low Mg# (<46). All samples show a high-K calc-alkaline differentiation trend and I-type features. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns are fractionated [(La/Yb)n = 2.40-12.44] and display weak Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.30-0.76). The rocks are characterized by enrichment of LILE and depletion of HFSE. The Harşit host rocks have weak concave-upward REE patterns, suggesting that amphibole and garnet played a significant role in their generation during magma segregation. The host rocks and their enclaves are isotopically indistinguishable. Sr-Nd isotopic data for all of the samples display ISr = 0.70676-0.70708, εNd(79 Ma) = -4.4 to -3.3, with TDM = 1.09-1.36 Ga. The lead isotopic ratios are (206Pb/204Pb) = 18.79-18.87, (207Pb/204Pb) = 15.59-15.61 and (208Pb/204Pb) = 38.71-38.83. These geochemical data rule out pure crustal-derived magma genesis in a post-collision extensional stage and suggest mixed-origin magma generation in a subduction setting. The melting that generated these high-K granitoidic rocks may have resulted from the upper Cretaceous subduction of the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan oceanic slab beneath the Eurasian block in the region. The back-arc extensional events would have caused melting of the enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle and formed mafic magma. The underplating of the lower crust by mafic magmas would have played a significant role in the generation of high-K magma. Thus, a thermal anomaly induced by underplated basic magma into a hot crust would have caused partial melting in the lower part of the crust. In this scenario, the lithospheric mantle-derived basaltic melt first mixed with granitic magma of crustal origin at depth. Then, the melts, which subsequently underwent a fractional crystallization and crustal assimilation processes, could ascend to shallower crustal levels to generate a variety of rock types ranging from diorite to granite. Sr-Nd isotope modeling shows that the generation of these magmas involved ~65-75% of the lower crustal-derived melt and ~25-35% of subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Further, geochemical data and the Ar-Ar plateau age on hornblende, combined with regional studies, imply that the Harşit pluton formed in a subduction setting and that the back-arc extensional period started by least ~79 Ma in the Eastern Pontides.

Bahar, Bilge; Yildirim, Mehmet
Some spring bread wheat genotypes were evaluated for drought resistance using drought tolerance efficiency (DTE) and drought susceptibility index (DSI) under rainfed conditions in this study. Field trials were conducted in the Research Area of Field Crops Department, Agricultural Faculty, Cukurova University during 2002 - 2003 with high rainfall and 2003 - 2004 with low rainfall growth seasons. High variations were observed for drought resistance parameters both DTE and DSI in this study. While DTE values ranged from 65 - 98%, DSI values changed 0.077 - 1.761. The genotypes with high DTE and low DSI were evaluated as drought resistant; meanwhile, genotypes with low DTE and high DSI were considered as drought susceptible. Thus, genotypes Croc 1/Aegilops squarrosa, Genc 99, Weawer/WL 3926, Oasis/Kauz//*4 Bcn, and Punjab 96 with the lowest DSI and the highest DTE values were accepted drought resistant genotypes which may be used as the genetic sources for drought resistance.

Corumluoglu, Ozsen
In an urban environment, sometimes surveying becomes a very hard task, especially measuring some certain points or details on the ground that are surrounded by obstacles such as trees, fences or buildings. On the other hand, in such areas, survey points installed as references on the ground can easily be lost because of city activities. Wall traverse supported by GPSSIT (GPS Sanal Istasyon Teknigi - GPS Virtual Point Technique) and relying on freely chosen Sanal Istasyon Noktalari (SINs) or - virtual points (VIPs) without worrying about installing any control point on the ground provide a reliable resolution. In this study, establishment of wall traverse points by the support of GPSSIT and TS (GPSSIT and total station) and a detail measurement technique with 3D coordinates using these wall points were introduced and applied in a sample area. As a conclusion, standard deviations were found as mp = ± 4.53 cm and mH = ± 3.85 cm in position and height respectively for details.

Yolcu, H.; Serin, Y.; Tan, M.
Lucerne and smooth bromegrass are commonly cultivated in irrigated and dry lands in intercropping systems in the world. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of seeding patterns (mixed, alternative and cross-seeding patterns), nitrogen (0, 60, and 120 kg N ha-1) and phosphorus fertilizer (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg P2O5 ha-1) rates on dry matter yields, botanical composition and crude protein yield of lucerne-smooth bromegrass mixture in an intercropping system. The experiment was established in 2001 and data were collected in dry matter yield and legume ratio for four years (2002-2005) and in crude protein yield for two years (2002-2003). The results showed that the highest dry matter yield was produced by a alternative seeding pattern. However, the highest legume ratio and crude protein yield was produced by mixtures sown in cross seeding pattern. Nitrogen fertilizer application decreased legume ratio but increased crude protein yield. Phosphorus fertilizer application had no effect on dry matter yield, legume ratio or crude protein yield of the lucerne-smooth bromegrass mixtures.

Çavdar, Ahmet; Yetgin, Şükrü
The durability can be described as concrete's resistance to the destructive influences of a medium containing acid, sulfate and/or various chemicals and mechanical effects. The main objective of this study is investigation of mechanical and mineralogical properties of cement mortar with different pozzolanic compositions and subjected to sulfated medium. In the study, the mortars produced with cement samples having seven different compositions and varied with an air-entraining agent were subjected to the influence of sulfate. This study is supported by thin section and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) investigations, in addition to being subjected to the basic tests, such as compression and flexure. The most important findings obtained from the study are that the compact structure has more effective properties against sulfate effects for cement mortars than pozzolanic materials' effects and the highest pozzolanic material ratio is restricted about 25-30% by mass because this ratio is a boundary of mechanical properties.

Maden, Nafiz
Curie-point depth and heat flow values of the Erciyes region are determined to identify the thermal regime of the Central Anatolia by applying the spectral analysis method to the magnetic anomaly data. To compute the spectrum of the data, the magnetic anomaly of the region is transformed into 2-D Fourier domain to attain the average Curie depth. This method is useful in determining the top boundary of magnetic anomaly sources and reveals the Curie depth as 13.7 km in the study area. The obtained results imply a high thermal gradient (42.3°C km-1) and corresponding heat flow values (88.8 mWm-2) in the research area. Using the temperature value measured at borehole drilled by the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration of Turkey (MTA), the values for the thermal gradient and heat flow value were computed as 50.7°C km-1, 106.5 mWm-2. From the heat flow value, the Curie-point depth was determined as 11.4 km in this region. It is concluded from the obtained values that the region has very high geothermal potential caused by partial melting of the lower crust.

Yolcu, Halil; Gunes, Adem; Dasci, Mahmut; Turan, Metin; Serin, Yunus
A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of solid, liquid and the combination of solid and liquid cattle manure applications on the yield, quality and mineral content of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) + barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) intercropping mixture in 2006-2007 at Gümüşhane, Turkey. The treatments were control (no manure), two liquid (L1 = 10 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure and L2 = 20 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure), two solid (S1 = 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure, S2= 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure) and four different combinations of liquid and solid cattle manure applications (S1L1 = 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 10 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure, S1L2 = 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 20 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure, S2L1 = 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 10 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure, and S2L2 = 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure + 20 000 L ha-1 liquid cattle manure). Total forage dry matter yield (TFDMY), crude protein content (CP), crude protein yield (CPY), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), dry matter intake (DMI), dry digestible matter (DDM), relative feed value (RFV) and mineral contents (Mg, Ca, K, P, Na, Mn, Zn, Fe and Cu) were determined to evaluate the effects of different cattle manure applications on intercropping mixtures. Solid, liquid and the combined cattle manure treatments had no effect on the TFDMY, CPY, ADF, NDF, DMI, DDM, RFV, Mg, Ca, K, Mn and Zn of the intercropping mixture except CP (p<0.01), P (p<0.01), Na (p<0.05), Fe (p<0.05) and Cu (p<0.05) in the first year. The treatments had significant effects on TFDMY (p<0.01), CP (p<0.01), ADF (p<0.05), NDF (p<0.01), DMI (p<0.01), DDM (p<0.05), RFV (p<0.01) and Zn (p<0.01) values of the intercropping mixture except CPY, Mg, Ca, K, P, Na, Mn, Fe and Cu in the second year. The results of the study revealed that the common vetch and barley intercropping mixture can be fertilized with 40 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure to improve the yield and quality. But if mineral content of forage is more important than yield and quality for the farmer, then it may be fertilized with 20 ton ha-1 solid cattle manure.

The economic analysis was performed and sustainability was evaluated for 7 leader Turkish marine hatcheries which have 61.5% of Turkish total marine fish fry production. For this purpose, the fixed cost including investment and operational costs including feed, labor, energy, fuel, water, oxygen, and medicament costs were determined by face to face interview for each hatchery. Also, production methods, species cultured and marketing techniques of each hatchery were investigated and conflicts, opportunities, projections, structuring and sustainability of the sector were evaluated by questionnaire designed in the scope of SUSTAINAQ, a FP6 Project supported by EU. As a result, it was seen that the ratio of total cost to total income changed between 22% and 97.8%. Although the RAS requires high operation and initial investment costs and highly qualified technicians, it is seen that it will be very important for sustainability of Turkish marine hatcheries because of land, quality and quantity of water and environmental approaches.

Topal, Umut; Uzman, Ümit
This paper deals with multiobjective optimization of symmetrically angle-ply square laminated plates subjected to biaxial compressive and uniform thermal loads. The design objective is the maximization of the buckling load for weighted sum of the biaxial compressive and thermal loads. The design variable is the fiber orientations in the layers. The performance index is formulated as the weighted sum of individual objectives in order to obtain optimal solutions of the design problem. The first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used in the mathematical formulation of buckling analysis of laminated plates. The modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for optimization routine. For this purpose, a program based on FORTRAN is used. Finally, the effect of different weighting factors, number of layers, aspect ratios, load ratios and boundary conditions on the optimal design is investigated.
- MakaleYalnız künye2010Investigation of abrasion resistance of cement mortar with different pozzolanic compositions and subjected to sulfated medium
Çavdar, Ahmet; Yetgin, Şükrü
The durability phenomenon for concrete, or cement mortar, has gained attention recently as one of the important mechanical properties. It can be described as concrete's resistance to the destructive influences of a medium containing acid, sulfate and/or various chemicals and mechanical effects, like abrasion. Most of the studies attempted to improve these individual properties in concrete. However, concrete can be subjected to two or more of these effects simultaneously. In this study, the mortars produced with cement samples having seven different compositions and varied with an air-entraining agent were subjected to the influence of sulfate and abrasive effects simultaneously. In this study, several examples were evaluated using samples cured for six different periods throughout one year. This study is supported by thin section and XRPD investigations, in addition to being subjected to the basic tests, such as compression, flexure and abrasion. If the most important findings obtained from the study are summarized, it is seen that a compact cement matrix is more effective against both sulfate and abrasive effects than mineral additives. The mortars subjected to coupled (sulfate and abrasive) effects show less durability if compared to ones cured in water and later abraded.

This paper deals with thermal buckling load optimization of symmetrically laminated angle-ply thin plates with centrally located different cutouts subjected to a uniform temperature load rise. The optimum results are given for maximum buckling temperature and the fibre orientation is adopted as design variable. The results are obtained for the various cutout geometries such as rectangle and circle. The modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for the optimization routine. Therefore a program based on FORTRAN is used. Finally, the effects of cutout areas, plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions on the optimum results are demonstrated.
- MakaleYalnız künye2010Comparison of stepped and smooth spillway effects on stream reaeration
Aras, Egemen; Berkun, Mehmet
The oxygen transfer at a hydraulic structure happens by self-aeration through the spillway and by flow aeration in the hydraulic jump downstream of the hydraulic structure. Spillways with their water-air controlling mechanisms are important not only for their structural properties but also for their effects on stream ecology. Spillway types also affect the efficiency of aeration. Decisions on the types of spillway should be made by taking the environmental conditions and flow rates into consideration. This paper compares the aeration efficiency of stepped and smooth spillways. Empirical correlations predicting length of the non-aerated flow region and aeration efficiency are developed. Smooth and stepped spillways cause increased dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations at the downstream part of the channel. DO concentration changes are shown to depend on the flow types, discharge rates, tail-water depth and travelling times.

Çavdar, Özlem; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Adanur, Süleyman
Stochastic seismic finite element analysis of a cable-stayed bridge whose material properties are described by random fields is presented in this paper. The stochastic perturbation technique and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method are used in the analyses. A summary of MCS and perturbation based stochastic finite element dynamic analysis formulation of structural system is given. The Jindo Bridge, constructed in South Korea, is chosen as a numerical example. The Kocaeli earthquake in 1999 is considered as a ground motion. During the stochastic analysis, displacements and internal forces of the considered bridge are obtained from perturbation based stochastic finite element method (SFEM) and MCS method by changing elastic modulus and mass density as random variable. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SFEM algorithm are evaluated by comparison with results of MCS method. The results imply that perturbation based SFEM method gives close results to MCS method and it can be used instead of MCS method, especially, if computational cost is taken into consideration.
