R-peaks Detection with Convolutional Neural Network in Electrocardiogram Signal

    Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur; Kayikçioglu, Temel

The performance of electrocardiogram applications is closely related to the succesful detection of R-peaks. Therefore, successful detection of R-peaks is of high importance. Electrocardiogram signals vary from person to person, so detection of R-peaks is getting difficult. In this study, Evolutionary Neural Network which is a deep learning model and imitates human vision, is used to detect R-peaks. The MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database with 48 different records was used as the database and experimental results with very high accuracy were obtained.

Detecting Cardiac Arrhythmia by Using Time Differences of Double Wavelength PPG Peaks

    Yildirim, Omer; Kayikçioglu, Temel

Nowadays, photopletismogram (PPG) signals are used in respiration and blood pressure measurement, monitoring of the sleep pattern and also detecting of mental disorders, mainly blood oxygen saturation and heartrate measurement. The reason of the use of PPG signals instead of signals such as electroencephalogram (EEG) or electrocardiogram (ECG) is easy to obtain and real-time monitoring of these data, as well as being easily used by people in daily life and easily integrated into wearable technologies. In this study, detecting of cardiac arrhythmia was made successfully by using double wavelength PPG signals instead of ECG signals

The effect of quench-aging on the mechanical properties of Zn-27Al-1Cu alloy

    Aydin, Murat; Senaslan, Fatih

The ternary alloy Zn-27Al-1Cu was produced by permanent mold casting. As-cast alloy was aged for different periods after being subjected to solution treatment followed by water quenching. The microstructure, mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of as-cast and heat-treated alloy were then investigated. The quench-aging eliminated the as-cast dendritic structure and produced a uniform microstructure consisting of large grains combined with precipitates. The hardness and tensile strength generally increased, whereas the ductility slightly decreased with aging time. Under all conditions, the longest fatigue life was obtained from the alloy that had been aged for 0.5 h, while the alloy which had been aged for 10 h exhibited the shortest. The fatigue properties were found to be more dependent on impact toughness and elongation, rather than tensile strength.

EFFECTS OF STRAND CONFIGURATION ON PRE-TENSIONED I-GIRDERS

Atmaca, Barbaros; Ates, Sevket; Günaydin, Murat; Altunisik, Ahmet Can

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of strand configuration on the behavior of precast, pre-tensioned concrete I-girders by considering design load components for highway bridges as dead loads and equivalent lane loads. Under these loads, bridge girder's bottom flange is exposed to tensile stresses. To minimize or eliminate the tensile stresses, compressive stresses are induced in pre-stressed concrete with strands. Determination of strand configuration is important as well as number of strands because it affects stress distribution and displacement of bridge girders. One of the typical precast I-girder with 90 cm height is considered in this study. To determine strand configuration effects, eighteen I-girders with the same cross-section, effective span length and material properties but different strand configuration are selected as an application. Equal prestressing force is applied all strands simultaneously. Three dimensional finite element (FE) models of girder are constituted using ANSYS software. Result of beam theory is used to verify the modeling techniques. At the end of the study, numerically identified stress distribution and displacement for I-girders compared with each other. It is seen that proper strand configuration is effective to reducing stresses and displacements of pre-stressed I-girder.

ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT SCREENING, SYNERGY STUDIES OF HELICHRYSUM CHIONOPHILUM EXTRACTS AGAINST TO RESISTANT MICROBIAL STRAINS

    Ozcan, Kadriye; Acet, Tuba

In this study, the antimicrobial activities and antioxidant properties of five different extracts of Helichrysum chionophilium plants from Gumushane/Turkey were investigated. To determine the antimicrobial activity disc diffusion and microdilution methods were used against to fifteen microorganisms. The effect of plant extracts and antibiotic combinations against to vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus were investigated as well. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined by spectrophotometric techniques. Antioxidant properties of plant extracts evaluated by free radical scavenging assays which ABTS and DPPH. The plant ethyl acetate extract showed the highest level of total phenolic (423.01 +/- 0.8 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid contents (100.18 +/- 1.4 mg QE/g extract). Similarly, ethyl acetate extract exhibited the highest level of DDPH (IC50: 67.44 +/- 0.9 mu g/ml). However, hexane extract exhibited the highest level activity of ABTS (IC50: 55.20 +/- 1.3 mu g/ml). The highest MIC value was determined as 8 mu g/ml against to Pseudomonas aeruginosa on ethyl acetate extract. Besides, all of extracts exhibited antimicrobial activity on at least one test organism. Plant extracts with some antibiotic combinations generated synergies or partial synergic activity against to VREF and MRSA. These findings revealed that the plant has strong antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Finally, using the plant extracts and antibiotic combinations might be a good tool in fighting with antibiotic resistance strains.

A New Nomogram Proposal to Determine Concrete Compressive Strength by Combined Nondestructive Testing Methods

    Bingöl, Şinasi; Çavdar, Ahmet

Concrete is the most widely used construction material in contemporary construction technology. In particular, it holds an important place in the building industry in the world. Since concrete is a nonhomogeneous material, determining the strength of concrete accurately is quite difficult. In this respect, to check the mechanical properties of concrete in-situ, nondestructive test (NDT) methods can be used. They are useful as they do not damage concrete; however, these test results are sometimes deceptive. To reduce these deceptive results, destructive test methods were proposed to increase the accuracy of nondestructive methods. The objective of this study is to determine the strength of concrete with different characteristic strengths using destructive and NDT methods, and to establish new relationships between the compressive strength of concrete and Schmidt rebound values, and ultrasonic wave velocities. For this purpose, 101 concrete cube samples were prepared. After 7 and 28 days of curing, Schmidt rebound and ultrasonic wave velocity tests were applied as NDT methods. New formulations and graphs were established by carrying out a multiple regression analysis between the ultrasonic wave velocities, Schmidt rebound values, and compressive strengths. Thus, a new combined NDT method was developed with a nomogram. Furthermore, the applicability and accuracy of the formula and graph obtained were investigated by comparing the results of core samples from existing structures. The most important findings obtained from the study are summarized below. The concrete strength can be determined with nondestructive formulas obtained with an accuracy of 85%. High strength concrete cube samples are obtained in-house with 1.6% deviation, and core samples in-situ can be obtained with 7.3% deviation with the newly developed NDT nomogram. These test results show that the newly developed NDT formulas in this study are a very good alternative for determining concrete strength in-situ.

Experimental and numerical investigation of natural convection in a discretely heated vertical channel: Effect of the blockage ratio of the heat sources

Sarper, Bugra; Saglam, Mehmet; Aydin, Orhan

This study deals with the buoyancy induced flow and heat transfer in a parallel plate channel with a heat source array, which simulates an electronic package. The heat source array consists of four discrete protruding heat sources made of copper. The focus of this study is concentrated on the effect of heat source blockage ratio (br) on recirculating flow and cooling performance of the system. Studies are conducted both for flush mounted or protruding heat source cases. Four different values of the blockage ratio of the protruding heat sources (br = 0.125, 0.25, 0.375 and 0.5) are considered. The range of the modified Grashof number covers the values between 9.6 × 105 and 1.53 × 107. In the experiments, flow visualization and temperature measurements are conducted. Numerical studies are performed via ANSYS Fluent software. From the experimental results and numerical studies, it is found that buoyancy induced flow and cooling performance is significantly affected by the blockage ratio of the heat source array.

The investigation of the lattice strains and crystallite sizes of Y358 and Y123 high-temperature superconductors

    Duzgun, Ibrahim

In this study, the Y358 phase, the newest high-temperature superconductor member of the yttrium barium copper oxide family, was produced using the solid-state reaction technique. The Y358 superconductor exhibited the Meissner effect at low temperature (77 K). The X-ray diffraction spectra indicated that the crystal structure was almost identical to that of Y123, but with some impurity peaks. An X-ray peak broadening analysis was applied to determine the lattice strain, and the medial crystallite size was calculated perpendicular to the surface of the superconductor specimens. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that the crystallite size of the Y358 superconductor was about 1.125 times larger than that of the Y123 superconductor.

Hybrid global maximum power point tracking approach for photovoltaic power optimisers

    Basoglu, Mustafa Engin; Çakir, Bekir

A new hybrid global maximum power point (MPP) tracking (MPPT) method is introduced in this study by using an improved 0.8 VOC model-based algorithm containing a smart power scanning procedure which is based on the sign of a change of photovoltaic (PV) module power. By courtesy of this procedure, the global MPP is determined effectively and within a small scanning time interval. The effectiveness of the proposed global MPPT algorithm has been validated by experimental studies. One of the buck-boost converter types, a single-ended primary inductance converter was implemented in this context. Experimental results show that tracking efficiency in the proposed algorithm is very satisfactory since blind scanning is prevented. Furthermore, it is presented in the experimental results that tracking efficiency is bigger in the proposed shading detection approach by up to 11.29% than the other technique which monitors voltage and current variations. In addition, there are no high software and hardware burdens which make this MPPT algorithm applicable especially in the smart alternating current module, module-integrated converters, PV power optimisers, and module level distributed MPPT applications.

Petrography, mineral chemistry and crystallization conditions of cenozoic plutonic rocks located to the north of Bayburt (Eastern Pontides, Turkey)

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Yücel, Cem; Arslan, Mehmet; Sipahi, Ferkan; Temizel, Irfan; Çakmak, Gökhan; Güloglu, Z. Samet

The Eastern Pontides comprise many intrusive bodies varying in composition, size and age from Palaeozoic to Cenozoic. Especially Cenozoic aged bodies are commonly observed in the southern part, while they are rarely exposed in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides. In this study, the petrography and mineral chemistry of the Cenozoic aged Çiçekli, Somarova, Sorkunlu, Şaşurluk, Aydintepe, Kemerlikdagi and Pelitli plutons located to the north of Bayburt are determined, and the crystallisation conditions of the studied bodies were estimated by means of thermobarometer calculations. The studied plutons extend mostly in NE-SW directions and are approximately ellipsoid in shape. The contacts between the plutons and surrounding rocks are sharp, and plutons commonly contain mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs) of different sizes. Petrographic and mineral chemistry studies reveal some disequilibrium textures reflecting the magma mixing process. Based on modal mineralogy, the plutonic rocks are gabbroic diorite, diorite, tonalite, granodiorite and monzogranite in composition. The rocks have fine to medium granular, porphyric, monzonitic, poikilitic, occasionally myrmekitic and micrographic textures. The main minerals are labradorite and albite (An68-02), magnesiohornblende and actinolite (Mg# = 0.6-0.9), diopside and augite (Wo44-46), clinoenstatite (En53-57) and Fe-Ti oxide minerals. Crystallization temperatures calculated from amphibole, biotite, clinopyroxene, magnetite and ilmenite minerals are 405°C to 1161°C, pressure values are 0.1 to 2.7 kbar, and oxygen fugacity (log10 fO2) is -20 to -12. Estimation of water content calculated by using amphiboles is between 2.9 and 6.8%. Based on obtained data, it is suggested that the studied plutons were emplaced at shallow depths (∼ 1-8 km).

Turan, Ibrahim; Demir, Selim; Kilinc, Kagan; Yaman, Serap Ozer; Misir, Sema; Kara, Hanife; Genc, Berna; Mentese, Ahmet; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel; Deger, Orhan

Rosa canina is a member of the genus Rosa that has long been used for medical objectives. Several studies have reported cytotoxic effects of different Rosa species, but there has been only limited investigation of the cytotoxic effect of R. canina. The purpose of the current study was to examine the potential effect of R. canina extract on cell viability, the cell cycle, apoptosis, and the expression of telomerase in human colon cancer (WiDr) cells. The cytotoxic effect of the extract was determined using MTT assay. The mechanism involved in the cytotoxic effect of the extract was then evaluated in terms of apoptosis and the cell cycle using flow cytometry. Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) was investigated using the fluorometric method, and expression levels of telomerase were studied using RT-PCR. R. canina extract exhibited a selective cytotoxic effect on WiDr cells compared with normal colon cells. The extract induced cell cycle arrest at the S phase and apoptosis via reduced MMP in WiDr cells. R. canina extract significantly repressed telomerase expressions at treatment times of 48 and 72 h in WiDr cells. Our results suggest that R. canina may have considerable potential for development as a novel natural product-based anticancer agent.

Investigation of the Effect of Recycled Asphalt Pavement Material on Permeability and Bearing Capacity in the Base Layer

Seferoǧlu, Ayşegül Güneş; Seferoǧlu, Mehmet Tevfik; Akpinar, Muhammet Vefa

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and cement content on the permeability and bearing capacity characteristics of aggregate base courses. Mixtures containing untreated RAP ranging between 0 and 100 percent and 1, 2, and 3% cement-treated RAP were subjected to laboratory tests (bitumen content, sieve analysis, modified proctor, soaked California bearing ratio (CBR), and constant-level permeability tests). The results showed that, as the RAP percentage in the mixture increased, CBR values decreased considerably. Moreover, there is a linear increase in the CBR values with cement treatment. Optimum moisture contents (OMC) and maximum dry densities (MDD) showed a decreasing trend. Increasing the cement percentages in 100% RAP blend increases the OMC and MDD values. The permeability of RAP showed a decrease as the percentage of RAP and cement increased in blends. The study showed that the CBR value of the 20% RAP blend is also obtained in the 100% RAP/3% cement-treated blend. Thus, it has been understood that cement is a suitable material in order to increase the use of RAP. In addition, the increase in the percentage of RAP and cement made the base course more impermeable.

Latest Cretaceous “A2-type” granites in the Sakarya Zone, NE Turkey: Partial melting of mafic lower crust in response to roll-back of Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere

Karsli, Orhan; Aydin, Faruk; Uysal, Ibrahim; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Kumral, Mustafa; Kandemir, Raif; Budakoglu, Murat; Ketenci, Murat

An integrated study of comprehensive geochronological, geochemical, and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic data was undertaken for the A-type Topcam pluton that intruded within the Sakarya Zone (NE Turkey) with the aims of elucidating its origin and tectonic significance and gaining new insights into the generation of aluminous A-type granites. New LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb crystallization ages of 72 and 73 Ma indicate emplacement in the Late Cretaceous time, just after extensive metaluminous I-type magmatism in the area. The pluton consists mainly of alkali feldspar, quartz, plagioclase, amphibole, and biotite with accessory minerals such as magnetite, apatite, and zircon. The outcrop is composed of granite, syenite, monzonite, and quartz monzonite and possesses a wide range of SiO2 content (57–70 wt%) with elevated Ga/Al ratios and low Mg# (mostly < 43). The pluton is metaluminous to weakly peraluminous, with aluminium saturation index (ASI) (molar Al2O3/[CaO + K2O + Na2O]) values of 0.82 to 1.18, and belongs to the shoshonitic and ultra-potassic series. All the samples exhibit relative enrichment in light rare earth elements (LREE) and significant negative Eu (Eu/Eu* = 0.31 to 0.86) anomalies on the chondrite-normalized REE diagram. The rocks are enriched in some large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, Th and Ba), and spidergrams show a relative depletion in Nb, Ti, and Sr. The granitic rocks of the pluton have identical 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios ranging from 0.70518 to 0.70716, relatively low εNd (t) values varying from − 5.5 to − 0.4, and TDM ages (0.82–1.19 Ga). In situ zircon analyses show that the rocks have variable negative and positive εHf (t) values (− 5.5 to 5.9) and Hf two-stage model ages (742 to 1468 Ma), which are indicative of minor addition of juvenile material. Sr-Nd isotope modelling suggests mixing of 70–90% of lower crustal-derived melt with ~ 10–30% of mantle-derived melt at lower crust depths. The heat source for partial melting is provided by upwelling of hot asthenosphere triggered by slab roll-back events. Geochemical and isotopic data reveal that metaluminous A2-type granites were derived from partial melting of the Paleozoic lower continental crust dominated by mafic rocks in amphibolitic composition, with minor input of subcontinental lithospheric mantle-derived magma followed by subsequent limited fractional crystallization to generate a variety of rock types. From integrating all available data with the regional tectonic evolution in the Sakarya Zone and adjacent regions, we attribute generation of aluminous A2-type granites to a back-arc extension in the subduction zone, which is induced by the roll-back of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab around 72 Ma. Consequently, we conclude that these A-type granites were related to intensive extension tectonic, which peaked during the late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) in response to the roll-back of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab, which is indicative of the final-stage subduction-related magmatism in the Sakarya Zone.

Induced simplified neutrosophic correlated aggregation operators for multi-criteria group decision-making

    Şahin, Rıdvan; Zhang, Hong-yu

Induced Choquet integral is a powerful tool to deal with imprecise or uncertain nature. This study proposes a combination process of the induced Choquet integral and neutrosophic information. We first give the operational properties of simplified neutrosophic numbers (SNNs). Then, we develop some new information aggregation operators, including an induced simplified neutrosophic correlated averaging (I-SNCA) operator and an induced simplified neutrosophic correlated geometric (I-SNCG) operator. These operators not only consider the importance of elements or their ordered positions, but also take into account the interactions phenomena among decision criteria or their ordered positions under multiple decision-makers. Moreover, we present a detailed analysis of I-SNCA and I-SNCG operators, including the properties of idempotency, commutativity and monotonicity, and study the relationships among the proposed operators and existing simplified neutrosophic aggregation operators. In order to handle the multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) situations where the weights of criteria and decision-makers usually correlative and the criterion values are considered as SNNs, an approach is established based on I-SNCA operator. Finally, a numerical example is presented to demonstrate the proposed approach and to verify its effectiveness and practicality.

Determining the degree of saturation of rocks as a function of time: A case study from mountainous area of Turkey

    Dağ, Serhat

The aim of this study is to scrutinize whether, in terms of saturation, the 48 hour duration suggested by ISRM (International Society for Rock Mechanics) methods and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standard in rocks is sufficient or not, and to examine how the degree of saturation of rocks may be determined as a function of time. For this purpose, samples from five different rock groups including igneous (andesite, granite, andesitic tuff) and sedimentary (limestone, sandstone) exposed in Gümüşhane city which is from mountainous area of north-eastern Turkey, have been compiled. Measurements were taken on the samples left for saturation under laboratory conditions as a result of which the degree of saturation values at the end of these time periods were determined. Similarly, at the end of 48 hours, the samples were left to dry under atmospheric conditions in the laboratory environment and their time dependent degree of saturation were also calculated at different times. The changes as a function of time in the degree of saturation were then examined mathematically using non-linear, exponential and logarithmic functions. Graphs and equations related with the acquired time-degree of saturation values and the correlation coefficient (r) values for these equalities have indicated a high accordance between time and degree of saturation for the studied rock groups. The applied methodology will be beneficial for determining the degree of saturation based on time for engineering studies that will be carried out in similar lithologies.

Adsorption of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution by hazelnut husk activated carbon prepared with potassium acetate

Imamoglu, Mustafa; Ozturk, Asuman; Aydın, Şeyma; Manzak, Aynur; Gündoğdu, Ali; Duran, Celal

Hazelnut husk (HH), an agricultural waste, was converted to carbonaceous material by chemical activation using potassium acetate. The produced activated carbon (KAHHAC) was characterized by FTIR, SEM, N2 adsorption–desorption experiments, CHN elemental analysis, and determination of moisture, ash, and point of zero charge. KAHHAC was used for the batch adsorption of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. Optimum pH and contact time were found to be 5.0 and 240 minutes, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium data were described well by the Langmuir equation providing 105.3 mg g−1 Cu(II) adsorption capacity. The pseudo-second-order model successfully described the kinetic of Cu(II) adsorption by KAHHAC. The adsorbed Cu(II) onto KAHHAC was completely desorbed by 0.5 M nitric acid. In conclusion, HH activated carbon (AC) produced by the potassium acetate activation method is a very useful and efficient sorbent material for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution.

Group decision making with simplified neutrosophic ordered weighted distance operator

    Şahin, Rıdvan; Küçük, Gökçe Dilek

Simplified neutrosophic set is a convenient tool proposed for dealing with complex problems; it is effective in providing more data for decision-making process. In this study, we develop a simplified neutrosophic ordered weighted distance operator which combines the neutrosophic distance measures and the ordered weighted average distance in the same formulation. It is a new handy aggregation operator that considers the situations where the input data are represented in simplified neutrosophic numbers, and it also contains diverse distance aggregation operators. Parameterized families of simplified neutrosophic ordered weighted distance operator are handled. Moreover, we establish a new neutrosophic group decision-making method based on the simplified neutrosophic ordered weighted distance operator, which has 2 extended approaches for determining the weights of decision makers and decision attributes in decision-making process, respectively. Finally, an illustrative example demonstrates the application of the proposed method. The effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method are shown by the comparative analysis with existing relative methods.
