Özad Düzgün, Azer; Okumuş, Funda; Saral, Ayşegül; Çopur Çiçek, Ayşegül; Cinemre, Sedanur

Introduction: Escherichia coli ranks among the most common sources of urinary tract infections (UTI). Methods: Between November 2015 and August 2016, 90 isolates of E. coli were isolated from patients at Rize Education and Research Hospital in Turkey. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined for all isolates using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. These E. coli isolates were also screened for virulence genes, β-lactamase coding genes, quinolone resistance genes, and class 1 integrons by PCR. Results: With respect to the antibiotic resistance profile, imipenem and meropenem were effective against 98% and 90% of isolates, respectively. A high percentage of the isolates showed resistance against β lactam/β lactamase inhibitor combinations, quinolones, and cephalosporins. PCR results revealed that 63% (57/90) of the strains carried class 1 integrons. In addition, a high predominance of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) was observed. The qnrA, qnrB, and qnrS genes were found in 24 (26.6%), 6 (6.6%), and 3 (3.3%), isolates, respectively. The most common virulence gene was fim (82.2%).The afa, hly, and cnf1 genes were detected in 16.6%, 16.6%, and 3.3% of isolates, respectively. Moreover, we observed eleven different virulence patterns in the 90 E. coli isolates. The most prevalent pattern was fim, while hly-fim, afa-aer-cnf-fim, aer-cnf, afa-aer, and afacnf- fim patterns were less common. Conclusions: Most of the E. coli virulence genes investigated in this study were observed in E. coli isolates from UTI patients. Virulence genes are very important for the establishment and maintenance of infection.

3Bio-Based Additives to Improve Diesel Engine Performance and Emissions

    Sezer, İsmet

This study investigates addition of ethanol and diethyl ether into diesel fuel. Base fuel and three different blends were used in the tests. The experiments were performed at engine speed of 1500 rpm and under various loads by single cylinder diesel engine. Injection, combustion, performance and emissions parameters were evaluated for base fuel and blends. Results show that injection pressure decreases for all blends, and DEE addition causes delay in injection timing. Burnt mass fraction is lower for ethanol and DEE blends during early combustion phase, while it increases with DEE blends during progressive combustion phase. Ethanol and DEE blends also give reductions in cylinder pressure and temperature. Generally, air excess coefficients increase but exhaust gas temperature decreases when using ethanol and DEE blends. Although ethanol blend causes decrements in engine power and torque, DEE blends give closer values to diesel fuel. Both ethanol and DEE blends yield improvement in brake thermal efficiency and reduction in brake specific fuel consumption. When using fuel blends, generally, decrements in NOx and CO2 emissions and increments in HC emission occur, while CO emission shows fluctuations depending on engine load.

A new colorimetric method for CUPRAC assay with using of TLC plate

    Akar, Zeynep; Burnaz, Nesibe Arslan

Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) method is one of the most widely used antioxidant methods. However, its need for a spectrophotometer, as in many other methods, is an important disadvantage. Cupric reducing antioxidant capacity was determined based on color analysis with Image J program in computer with the new method developed in this study and thus, use of spectrophotometer was eliminated. The new colorimetric CUPRAC assay was applied to various standard antioxidants and plant extracts. The reaction mixtures were dropped on TLC plate. The colors formed on TLC were transferred to the computer by using scanner images, and CTEAC value in μmol/L of each sample was determined with the image J program. The CTEAC values were compared with the TEAC values measured with the spectrometric method. A linear relationship was found between both (C)TEAC values of antioxidant standards (R2 = 0.991) and plant extracts (R2 = 0.994). Thus, the new method developed for the CUPRAC antioxidant assay can be easily performed in any environment without spectrophotometer device, and it is a low-cost method.

Albayrak, Seyda; Genc, Berna; Ozkan, Hakan; Taskin, Mesut; Adiguzel, Ahmet

In this study, one hundred and thirty isolates were isolated from water and sludge samples taken from hot springs located in different regions of Turkey. Among them, eleven isolates were chosen according to conventional (morphological, physiological and biochemical tests) and molecular methods (rep-PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing). These bacteria were then tested for their capability to produce valuable enzymes. As a result; species belonging to Bacillus, Anoxybacillus, Aeribacillus, Enterococcus, Exiguobacterium and Paenibacillus were identified. Test strains were found to have optimum reproductive potential at pH 5.0-9.0 and 15-65°C, usually at a concentration of 1.0-10.0% (w/v) NaCl. In addition, all thermotolerant bacteria were Gram, endospore (except E. profundum), catalase and oxidase (except E. faecium and E. profundum) positive, and rod-shaped (except E. faecium). It was observed that all isolates had a 99% similarity percentage as a result of 16S rRNA sequence analysis. All of the isolates were capable of producing industrially important enzymes moreover, eight of them could produce at least two of these enzymes. Test strains had high potential of industrial enzyme production, and the enzymes from these thermo-tolerant isolates will be widely used in biotechnological processes.

Automation in the Mining Industry: Review of Technology, Systems, Human Factors, and Political Risk

Rogers, W. Pratt; Kahraman, M. Mustafa; Drews, Frank A.; Powell, Kody; Haight, Joel M.; Wang, Yaxue; Baxla, Kritika; Sobalkar, Mohit

In the opinion of these authors, technology alone can never give an organization an edge over competitors or provide an industry step change. However, history has shown that technology applied with correct logistics and strategy makes a significant difference. Never has the minerals industry faced such daunting challenges and been in such need of a step change. Application of autonomous systems has been steadily increasing in the minerals industry. Automation technology has changed the mining value chain from exploration to mineral processing and refining. The future state will only see additional in-roads of automation into more processes and the whole system design. To better understand the near-future potential of automation, it is useful to explore and review the current state of automation in minerals development. A review of the state of automation research is given. The review will consider three critical areas: automation technology, system’s engineering and management processes around automation, and the role of human factors engineering in automated and semi-automated systems. The review ends with a discussion on the social and political risks of automation in terms of shared value and sustainable development.

Exploring the value of using data: a case study of continuous improvement through data warehousing

Rogers, W. Pratt; Kahraman, M. Mustafa; Dessureault, Sean

The mining industry is adapting data-rich technology. Data management processes and infrastructure require additional investment which, can be difficult to justify. A valuation model for data management infrastructure would necessitate modelling the ‘use’ of data and quantifying the value and the likelihood of success of improvement initiatives. A model is presented which can assess the impacts of a data-driven initiative. The initiatives are shown to be the foundation of improved shift coordination resulting in significant and sustained operational improvements. This paper aims to illustrate the value of using data from source systems in mining operations.

In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched, as an international collaboration hosted by CERN. This study covers a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee) and an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), which could, successively, be installed in the same 100 km tunnel. The scientific capabilities of the integrated FCC programme would serve the worldwide community throughout the 21st century. The FCC study also investigates an LHC energy upgrade, using FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the second volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the electron-positron collider FCC-ee. After summarizing the physics discovery opportunities, it presents the accelerator design, performance reach, a staged operation scenario, the underlying technologies, civil engineering, technical infrastructure, and an implementation plan. FCC-ee can be built with today's technology. Most of the FCC-ee infrastructure could be reused for FCC-hh. Combining concepts from past and present lepton colliders and adding a few novel elements, the FCC-ee design promises outstandingly high luminosity. This will make the FCC-ee a unique precision instrument to study the heaviest known particles (Z, W and H bosons and the top quark), offering great direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics.

Prostate volume effect on Gleason score upgrading in active surveillance appropriate patients

Çamur, Emre; Coskun, Alper; Kavukoglu, Ovunc; Can, Utku; Kara, Onder; Çamur, Arzu Develi; Sarica, Kemal; Narter, Kamil Fehmi

Introduction: Gleason Score (GS) upgrading rates in the literature are reported to be around 33-45%. The relationship between prostate volume and GS upgrading should be defined, aiming to reduce upgrading rates in patients with low risk groups who are eligible for active surveillance (AS) or minimally invasive treatment, by varying biopsy cores, or lengths of cores according to prostate volumes. In this regard, the aim of our study was to establish the relationship between prostate volume and GS upgrading. Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 78 patients, who were appropriate for AS between 2011-2016 at our hospital. Inclusion criteria were patient age under 65 years, PSA level under 10 ng/ml, GS (3 + 3) or (3 + 4), and 3 or less positive cores, clinical stages <= T2. GS increase in radical prostatectomy specimen was considered as 'upgrading' and in addition, score reported by biopsy as 3 + 4 but in surgical specimen as 4 + 3 were also considered as 'upgrading'. The effect of prostate volume on Gleason grade upgrading was examined by calculating upgrading rates separately for patients with prostate volume 30 ml or less, those with 30 to 60 ml, and those over 60 ml. Results: As a result of the analysis of the data, upgrading was seen in 35 (44.8%) of 78 patients included in the study. In the cohort mean prostate volume was 49.8 (+/- 26.3) ml. Twenty-two patients (28.2%) had prostate volume 30 ml or less, 34 (43.6%) 30 to 60 ml, and 22 (28.2%) 60 ml or more. The patients were divided into two groups as those with and without GS upgrading. Between the groups prostate volume and prostate volume range (0-30/31-60/> 60) were not significantly different (p value > 0.05). Conclusions: Gleason grade upgrading causes patients to be classified in a lower risk group than they actually are, and may lead to inappropriate treatment. This condition has a direct effect on the decision of active surveillance. Therefore, it is important to define the factors that can predict GS upgrading in active surveillance appropriate patients. In this study, we found that prostate volume has no significant effect on upgrading in active surveillance appropriate patients.

Anticholinergic, antidiabetic and antioxidant activities of cinnamon (cinnamomum verum) bark extracts: polyphenol contents analysis by LC-MS/MS

Gulcin, Ilhami; Kaya, Ruya; Goren, Ahmet C.; Akincioglu, Hulya; Topal, Meryem; Bingol, Zeynebe; Cakmak, Kader Cetin; Sarikaya, Sevim B. Ozturk; Durmaz, Lokman; Alwasel, Saleh

Ethanolic (EEC) and aqueous (WEC) extracts of cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) were evaluated for their antioxidant profiles by eight distinguished bioanalytical antioxidant methods. Their inhibitory effects were tested against some enzymes including acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, alpha-glycosidase and alpha-amylase, which linked to different diseases. Additionally, the antioxidant properties were determined and polyphenolic compositions of the both extracts were evaluated by LC-MS/MS analysis. According to the LC-MS/MS experiments, thirteen compounds were found in WEC and EEC. Also, p-hydroxybenzoic acid (321.1 mg/kg extract), p-coumaric acid (291.4 mg/kg extract), and pyrogallol (142.4 mg/kg extract) were found to be the most abundant ingredients in the WEC. On the other hand, pyrogallol (264.3 mg/kg extract), ferulic acid (224.7 mg/kg extract) and p-coumaric acid (170.2 mg/kg extract) were found as the most plentiful chemicals in the EEC. For the estimation of the antioxidant capacities of the both extracts (WEC and EEC), DPPH center dot and ABTS(center dot+) scavenging activities, as well as Fe3+-Fe2+, and Cu2+-Cu+ reducing assays were studied. The IC50 values of the WEC and EEC indicated that they were potent effective DPPH center dot (21. 25 and 15.71 mu g/mL) and ABTS(center dot+) (6.52 and 5.79 mu g/mL) scavengers, as well as AChE (221.33 and 110.26 mu g/mL), BChE (461.69 and 94.93 mu g/mL), alpha-glycosidase (206.86 and 220.00 mu g/mL) and alpha-amylase (189.86 and 200.86 mu g/mL) inhibitors. As a conclusion, both EEC and WEC had rich phenolic contents and demonstrated effective anticholinergic, antidiabetic and antioxidant effects.

A novel niosome formulation for encapsulation of anthocyanins and modelling intestinal transport

Fidan-Yardimci, Melike; Akay, Seref; Sharifi, Fatemeh; Sevimli-Gur, Canan; Ongen, Gaye; Yesil-Celiktas, Ozlem

The bioavailability of drugs can be improved by regulating the structural properties, particularly lipoid systems, such as niosomes, can increase cellular uptake. Herein, we optimized double emulsion and niosomal formulations for encapsulating anthocyanin-rich black carrot extract. Nanoparticles obtained by selected formulation were characterized in terms of morphology, particle size, drug encapsulation efficiency, in vitro release and cytotoxicity. The optimum conditions for niosomal formulation were elicited as 30 mg of cholesterol, 150 mg of Tween 20 and feeding time of 1 min at a stirring rate of 900 rpm yielding the lowest average particle size of 130 nm. In vitro release data showed the majority of the encapsulated anthocyanins were released at the end of 10 h. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the absorption of anthocyanins released from niosomes and cytotoxicity was assessed against neuroblastoma. Overall, these findings suggest that niosomal vesicles might be suitable delivery systems for anthocyanins.

Determining Complexity within the Crowd Movements

    Akpulat, Murat; Ekinci, Murat

The segmentation of the moving and non-moving parts in an image within the crowd analysis studies is a crucial result in terms of understanding the behaviour. However, in many studies carried out, moving areas are assessed as making a set of movement that are similar in terms of location and of acceleration. In this study, what kind of interaction there exists among the people in a high-density crowd movement was studied. Initially, the motion data is represented as trajectories by using the optical flow and particle advection methods. The image is divided into equal hexagons and each area's topological entropy value is determined through Finite Time Braid Entropy (FTBE). This value depends on the complexity of the spiral structure that the trajectories generate throughout the movement and this value shows how much effective it is in the area. Eventually, through the complexity map that was generated, the behaviour of the crowd could be better understood and assessed. Also, in this way, possible abnormal conditions in the area can be predicted by monitoring each region and by setting off from the changes in the values of Braid entropy in time. The method was tested using the high-density crowd movements in the UCF database and results were presented.

Entropy generation of nanofluid flow in a microchannel heat sink

Manay, Eyuphan; Akyürek, Eda Feyza; Sahin, Bayram

Present study aims to investigate the effects of the presence of nano sized TiO2 particles in the base fluid on entropy generation rate in a microchannel heat sink. Pure water was chosen as base fluid, and TiO2 particles were suspended into the pure water in five different particle volume fractions of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%. Under laminar, steady state flow and constant heat flux boundary conditions, thermal, frictional, total entropy generation rates and entropy generation number ratios of nanofluids were experimentally analyzed in microchannel flow for different channel heights of 200 mm, 300 mm, 400 mm and 500 mm. It was observed that frictional and total entropy generation rates increased as thermal entropy generation rate were decreasing with an increase in particle volume fraction. In microchannel flows, thermal entropy generation could be neglected due to its too low rate smaller than 1.10e-07 in total entropy generation. Higher channel heights caused higher thermal entropy generation rates, and increasing channel height yielded an increase from 30% to 52% in thermal entropy generation. When channel height decreased, an increase of 66%-98% in frictional entropy generation was obtained. Adding TiO2 nanoparticles into the base fluid caused thermal entropy generation to decrease about 1.8%-32.4%, frictional entropy generation to increase about 3.3%-21.6%. (C) 2018 The Authors. Automatic extraction of building boundaries from high resolution images with active contour segmentation

    Akbulut, Z.; Özdemir, S.; Acar, H.; Dihkan, M.; Karsli, F.

Building extraction from remotely sensed images plays an important role in many applications such as updating geographical information system, change detection, urban planning, disaster management and 3D building modeling. Automatic extraction of buildings from aerial images is not an easy task because of background complexity, lighting conditions and vegetation cover that reduces separability or visibility of buildings. As a result, automatic building extraction can be a complex process for computer vision and image processing techniques. In order to overcome this difficulty region-based active contour model was used to automatically detect the boundary of buildings for this study. To extract object boundaries, the model grows or shrinks the initial contour in the image. The main objective of this paper is making active contours algorithm perform without user interaction and to detect automatically initial contours to segment buildings with a software coded in Matlab. This task carried out by morphological operations, band ratio and thresholding methods. In this study, high resolution aerial images with 8 cm ground sampling distance (GSD) were used. Three separate test zones were selected with varying building level of detail on these images. Finally, it was assessed the accuracy of segmented buildings using Correctness, Completeness and Quality metrics by comparing the results images and manually digitized reference image. The proposed approach for building extraction from images was shown to be 98% accurate on buildings with simple geometry and homogeneous roof textures. However accuracy of extracted buildings with heterogeneous roof textures and lighting, and complex geometry is 89%. The results clearly show that automatically calculated initial contour positions work in accordance with the active contour algorithm and easily extraction of the buildings boundaries.

The Impact of Image on Corporate Reputation: The Case Of Giresun Municipality

    Güllüpunar, Hasan; Tekmen, Tuba

The perception of a corporation by its environment is based on the presented conducts, produced service or product, and established communication with the target group in this process. This is the result of active communication between the source and the recipient. At the same time, there are marks of the past and the future in this perception. Both the total perception that has developed based on the interaction between the corporation and target groups for different reasons in the past, and the emotion that this interaction creates in relation to the future affect the outlook on the corporate outputs. Therefore, two types of perception can be defined by the environment of an institution. The first is a perception that is defined by the active communication process based on corporate behaviour, product, or service. The second is a perception that is an important factor in the background of the first perception and at the same time it is related to the past and the future which is affected from the first perception. These are defined in the literature as image and reputation. This study inquires into the effect of the citizens' impressions provided by the municipalities in terms of the president, staff or services on the general perception of the municipalities. In this context, a survey was conducted in Giresun city centre regarding Giresun Municipality. In the research, image factors related to municipality services and the power of representatives of Giresun Municipality based on the president and the staff were determined and then the effect of these factors on Giresun Municipality's general perception was examined. In the study, it was concluded that the image factors are important explanations of the general perception of the municipality and the biggest 'factor on the general perception is the mayor 'factor.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURE ON TOURISM IN THE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES

Artan, Seyfettin; Hayaloglu, Pinar; Demirel, Selim Koray

Institutional economics literature suggests that inclusive institutions encourage economic growth by increasing efficiency in many sectors of the economy. Institutional structure also has effects on the tourism sector due to the confidential environment and incentives it brings. In this context, when studies on determinants of tourism are examined, it is remarkable that there are a number of studies on economic and social factors, but that there are limited studies about institutional determinants of tourism. This study investigates the causal relationships between institutional factors and tourism sector in nine Mediterranean coastal countries also including Turkey for the period of 1995-2015 by using Konya (2006) panel causality analysis. The results of the study using variables of corruption and democratic accountability as indicative of institutional structure reveal causal relations between tourism expenditures and institutional factors.
