Excess lifetime cancer risk due to natural radioactivity in Gümüşhane Province, NE Turkey

Maden, Nafiz; Akaryali, Enver; Gücer, Mehmet Ali

In this study, 162 in situ measurements of 238U, 232Th, and 40K radionuclide concentrations dataset taken by the gamma-ray spectrometer in Gümüşhane, Turkey are presented. The gamma ray measurements were performed by a 512-channel, three-window gamma-ray spectrometry equipment made by GF Instruments. We first observed the radionuclides of the 238U,232Th, and 40K values in Gümüşhane. We then calculated the hazard indices of gamma radiation such as annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE), internal and external hazard index (Hin, Hex), and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) based on the radionuclide abundances of 238U, 232Th, and 40K for the first time. In Gümüşhane, the average activity concentrations of radionuclides 238U, 232Th, and 40K were measured as 58.7 ± 34.3 Bq kg-1, 62.7 ± 37.2 Bq kg-1, and 1026.8 ± 486.0 Bq kg-1, respectively. The average outdoor annual effective dose equivalent and ELCR values were 132.2 ± 63.2 mSv yr-1 and 0.40 ± 0.19 × 10-3, respectively. Numerical results indicate that the radiological parameters (AEDE and ELCR) obtained for Gümüşhane Province were greater than the world’s mean values.

Seçer, I; smail; Ulaş, Sümeyye; Karaman-Özlü, Zeynep

As the COVID-19 outbreak is rapidly spreading all over the world, it’s secondary consequences will negatively affect both societies and individuals. The target group, expected to be exposed to the secondary negative consequences most intensely during the pandemic process and afterward, is undoubtedly the healthcare professionals. In this research, the impact of the fear that healthcare professionals in Turkey developed against the outbreak of COVID-19 on their psychological adjustment skills is examined, and in this context, the mediating role of experiential avoidance and psychological resilience is examined. In this context, an answer was sought for the question “Does experiential avoidance and psychological resilience have a mediating role in the impact of COVID-19 fear on psychological adjustment skills of healthcare professionals?” The research was carried out with a total of 370 healthcare professionals reached via online data collection method. Structural equation modeling was used in the data analysis process, and as a result, it was determined that the fear of COVID-19 had a negative effect on the psychological adjustment in healthcare professionals; however, psychological resilience was found to have a protective function that limits this effect, and experiential avoidance has a risk factor that aggravates this effect. Findings obtained from the research are discussed in the context of the literature.

Proteolytic, lipolytic and amylolytic bacteria reservoir of Turkey; cold-adaptive bacteria in detergent industry

Muslu, Selman; Genc, Berna; Adiguzel, Mahmut; Albayrak, Seyda; Adiguzel, Ahmet

Enzymes which would be active in cold conditions can be used in a wide range of fields from molecular biology to detergent industry due to their low processing capacity and high activity. In this study, sixty cold-adapted bacteria were isolated from water and sludge samples collected from Erzurum and Van provinces. Identification of eight isolates by molecular [(GTG)5-PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing] techniques and tests for temperature (4-35°C), pH (3-11) and salt (2-15% (w/v) requirements were performed. These bacteria were belonging to Pseudomonas chlororaphis subsp. aureofaciens (SM011A), Psychrobacter faecalis (SM012D), Rahnella aquatilis (SM015A), Shewanella putrefaciens (SM018A), Pseudomonas lactis (SM0110A), Flavobacterium chryseum (SM0112E), Exiguobacterium mexicanum (SM0117A) and Glutamicibacter arilaitensis (SM0118A). The physicochemical requirements for all isolates ranged between 4-25°C, pH 5-7 and 2-15% salt (NaCl) concentration. However, E. mexicanum did not require salt in growth medium. All bacteria were evaluated for protease, lipase and amylase enzymes and all were found to be multiple enzyme producers. The eight isolates were identified from the resources of Turkey, for the first time and enzyme production abilities of some isolates to produce enzymes were declared. The originating of the producers of these enzymes from Turkey shows that Turkey has a remarkable reservoir for cold-adaptive microorganisms and these microorganisms will make important contributions to the detergent industry worldwide.

Determining the quality of life and the sleep quality in patients with benign prostate hyperplasia

    Kulakaç, Nurşen; Sayılan, Aylin Aydın

Research question: How is the quality of life and quality of sleep affected in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia?. Research problem: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life and quality of sleep in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and to identify the relationship between them. Nocturia is one of the main symptoms associated to BPH, causing significant sleep disturbances, including sleep interruptions. Such sleep interruptions may significantly impair quality of life. Literature review: The assessment of nocturia and its impact on quality of life and sleep quality in patients living with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has been poor in terms of clinical research; moreover, there is a lack of specific methods to assess this impact. Methodology: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of all patients with the diagnosis of BPH who were admitted to the urology outpatient clinic of a state hospital in Turkey. The data were collected from 212 patients with BPH who accepted to participate in the study in January-June 2018. All patients gave consent prior to inclusion in the study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the WHOQOL-BREF (World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale - Brief Form) were used as the principle data collection tools. Percentage, t test, correlation and one-way variance analysis test were used to evaluate the data. Results: The mean age of the patients was 67.50 ± 8.89 years and 63.2% of them were first diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia 2.13 years ago. The lowest and the highest average scores that the patients obtained from the WHOQOL-BREF were their social and environmental domains scores, respectively. In all, 20.2% of the patient were found to have poor sleep quality (global score ≥ 5). The results showed that there was a positive correlation between the mean scores of the sleep quality of the patients and their quality of life physical domain subscale. It was also found that there was a significant negative correlation between night urination and the sleep quality in BPH patients (P <.05). Conclusions: It was determined that low quality of life in BPH patients is associated with low sleep quality. Personal characteristics, frequent night urination and working status are important determinants of the relationship between quality of life and sleep quality.

Karakoy, Tolga; Nadeem, Muhammad Azhar; Ton, Aybegun; Celisiz, Yeter; Anlarsal, Adem Emin; Hatipoglu, Rustu

Alfalfa is one of the most important crops mainly grown for forage and hay production in the world. Present study was aimed to investigate the green herbage and hay yield as well as some quality parameters such as acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), digestible dry matter (DDM), crude protein, dry matter contents, organic matter, crude oil and raw fiber of 9 different alfalfa cultivars. This study was conducted during two consecutive years (2015 and 2016) at two locations in Turkey (Sivas -Center and Sivas-Altinoluk). The mean values of ADF, NDF, DDM, crude protein (CP), green forage yield and dry forage yield were 43.73%, 52.69%, 50.70%,19.71%, 59163 kg ha- 1 and 13866 kg ha- 1 respectively. Dry forage yield reflected a positive and highly significant correlation with plant height, number of tillers and fresh forage yield. The varieties called Delta and Azzura performed very well for both locations during the whole period of study and also expressed a great level of winter resistance. Kayseri is a local cultivar in Turkey and it is revealed to be poor in terms of all the studied traits. According to the results of the study, it was concluded that the cultivars, Delta and Azzura, could be successfully grown in the continental climate regions of Turkey, and they could be also used in the breeding program of alfalfa to develop alfalfa varieties with high winter resistance and high yield and quality of forage.

The Mediator Role of Academic Resilience in the Relationship of Anxiety Sensitivity, Social and Adaptive Functioning, and School Refusal With School Attachment in High School Students

    Seçer, İsmail; Ulaş, Sümeyye

School has an important function in providing the environment for young people to acquire many skills and knowledge required by contemporary life, but the problems of attachment to school and problematic attendance all over the world reveal an increasing statistic. It is thought that some negative processes such as anxiety sensitivity, social and adaptive functioning, and school refusal can affect this problem. On the other hand, it is considered that the academic resilience of young people has an important protective function in terms of these risk factors. For this purpose, the mediator role of academic resilience between anxiety sensitivity, social and adaptive functioning, and school refusal and school attachment were examined in a Turkish sample of 452 high school students. In the process of data collection, the school refusal assessment scale, social and adaptive functioning scale, and academic resilience scale were adapted and used in the Turkish culture. In the data analysis, the structural equation model was used to determine the direct and indirect predictive effects between the variables. The results of the study showed that academic resilience fully mediated the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and school attachment, whereas it partially mediated the relationship between social and adaptive functioning and school refusal and school attachment. Based on the results of the study, it was evaluated that high academic resilience has a strong protective function against the problems of negative school attachment and problematic school absenteeism among young people, and this finding was discussed within the context of literature.

A novel similarity measure for single-valued neutrosophic sets and their applications in medical diagnosis, taxonomy, and clustering analysis

    Şahin, Ridvan; Karabacak, Mesut

As a generation of Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy set, the single-valued neutrosophic set is an important modeling approach for expressing and processing the inconsistent and indeterminate information very well. Similarity measure is an important tool frequently used in a variety of areas, from clustering analysis to medical diagnosis. Although neutrosophic literature has many similarity measures, they have some disadvantages that do not provide the general conditions of the similarity measure for some specific values. In this chapter, we present a novel similarity measure to handle the relationship between two single-valued neutrosophic sets. It uses a matrix norm and a strictly increasing (or decreasing) binary function called fuzzy implication, and provides axiomatic definition properties of similarity measure. The advantage of using fuzzy implications is that it offers not only different final options to decision-makers but also gives a parameterized class of similarity measures of SVNSs. It is appeared that the developed similarity measure gives better results when compared to other existing similarity measures. Finally, several numerical examples related to pattern recognition, such as medical diagnosis and taxonomy approach, and clustering analysis are performed to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed similarity measure.

MODELING OF THREE-PHASE THREE-LEVEL RECTIFIER WITH SPACE VECTOR PULSE WIDTH MODULATION METHOD IN MATLAB/SIMULINK PROGRAM

    Yüksek, Halil İbrahim; Ari̇Foğlu, Uğur

Multi-level rectifiers have low harmonic content and electromagnetic interference (EMI). In recent years, especially in medium and high-power applications are increasing use. As the voltage level per switch and switching frequency are low, the multi-level rectifiers have low losses and high efficiency. In this study, three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) rectifier topology with pulse width modulation (PWM) is investigated and the decoupled equations in the d-q synchronous rotating axis of the rectifier are given and a space vector PWM (SVPWM) control algorithm based on the d-q synchronous rotating axis of three-level rectifier is proposed. The control of the whole system is provided by voltage oriented control (VOC) strategy, which enables the realization of control in cascade system with outer voltage and inner current control blocks. This paper is focused on explaining in detail modulus optimum and symmetrical optimum methods used in the design of the inner current and outer voltage PI controllers of the three-level rectifiers, respectively. PI voltage controller is used to keep the rectifier output voltage constant, and PI current controller is used to reduce the harmonic content of the grid current. In addition, a simplified method compared to conventional SVPWM is used to calculate switching times and switching sequences. In this study, three-level rectifier is simulated in Matlab / Simulink with the help of SVPWM. The performance of the circuit has been tested by changing both the load value and the load voltage suddenly and successful results have been achieved.

Influence of lactobacillus reuteri on internal organ weight, performance and meat quality of Japanese quail (Coturnixcoturnix japonica) under heat stress; [Einfluss von lactobacillus reuteri auf das gewicht der inneren organe, die leistung und die fleischqualität Japanischer Wachteln (Coturnix coturnix japonica) unter Hitzestress]

    Tekce, E.; Bayraktar, B.; Aksakal, V.; Dertli, E.; Kamiloğlu, A.; Çinar Topçu, K.; Kaya, H.; Takma, C.; Yasulergezer, N.

In the present study, the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri E81 (LRE) supplemented at different doses (200, 400 and 600 mg/kg) into the diets on performance, meat quality and internal organ weights of Japanese quail (Coturnixcoturnix japonica) were investigated under heat stress (HS) conditions (37°C). For the experiments, 448 one-day old quails were used. Seven days of training (physical exercise) and a 35-day fattening period were applied. On day 7 of the trial, 8 groups [4 under control temperature of 25°C (CT): control (C), LRE-200, LRE-400 and LRE-600 and 4 under HS: control (HSC), SLRE-200, SLRE-400 and SLRE-600] were formed, each group consisting of four replicates with 14 quail each. At the end of this study, the CT group fed 400 mg/kg LRE showed the best performance results, whereas no effect was found for groups under HS in comparison to the control group (HSC). Samples taken on the 21st and 42nd day revealed that addition of probiotics in the CT and HS groups induced no effect on weight of the internal organs (p > 0.05). Analysis of meat quality on the 21st day showed that LRE caused an increase in pH in both the HS and CT groups. Further, 400-mg/kg LRE supplementation induced an increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the group under HS. In the CT groups on day 42 no effect of LRE was found on colour parameters or on the TBARS value, except for a decrease in the pH value in the LRE supplemented groups compared with the control. In HS groups a decrease in the L* value and an increase in the TBARS value was found compared to CT groups (p < 0.05), but there was no effect on other colour parameters or pH value. In conclusion, in the present study supplementation of different doses of LRE E81 to quail diets had no effect on performance, internal organ weight or meat quality under HS.

Analytical and finite element solutions of continuous contact problem in functionally graded layer

Kaya, Yusuf; Polat, Alper; Özşahin, Talat Şükrü

In this study, we solve the continuous contact problem of two layers with different material properties, loaded with two rigid flat blocks and resting on a rigid plane, by analytical and finite element methods. All surfaces are assumed to be frictionless. The upper layer is the functionally graded layer (FG), the height h1, the underlying layer is homogeneous, and the height is h2. It is assumed that the FG layer is isotropic and that the shear modulus and density change exponentially. The FG layer is loaded by means of two rigid flat blocks whose external loads are Q and P (per unit thickness in z direction). In the analytical solution of the problem, stress and displacement expressions are substituted in the boundary conditions and the problem is demoted to singular integral equations where the contact stresses are the unknown functions. These singular integral equations are solved numerically using the Gauss–Chebyshev integration formulas. Two-dimensional finite element analysis of the problem is performed using the ANSYS package program. The analyses are performed for different shear modulus ratios (μ2/μ-h1), distances between the blocks ((c − b)/h1) and inhomogeneity parameters (βh1). The contact stresses under the blocks, the normal stresses (σy) between interfaces of the FG layer and the homogeneous layer and between the homogeneous layer and rigid plane are also measured. In addition, the initial separation load and the initial separation distances (χcr, λcr) of the FG layer and homogeneous layer are determined. The results are presented comparatively as graphs and tables.

In our country, Home Health Care (HHC) units support people who are fully bed-dependent in order to provide health services at the right time, place and conditions. Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is used for cost, speed and distance optimization in delivering products or services to customers. In addition, there will be improvements in HHC and it will also save on transportation, storage and labor costs by determining the most appropriate VRP’s solution methods. In this respect, the aim of this study is to determine the best VRP’s solution method which can increase the efficiency of HHC. The proposed approach is based on Intuitionistic Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (IF-AHP) method which is a strong technique for dealing with uncertainties. According to results, the most important criteria is “time based factors”. Meta-heuristic is the appropriate solution algorithms for VRP in HHC.

Bottleneck identification and ranking model for mine operations

Kahraman, M. Mustafa; Rogers, W. Pratt; Dessureault, Sean

Mining has a long history of production and operations management. Considering the increasing complexity of reserves, declining metal grades, and worldwide price volatilities, mines have to operate more efficiently than ever. In recent years, companies have been adopting innovative solutions and technologies to reduce costs and remain competitive in the global market. Specifically, management of bottlenecks has been in the focus of the manufacturing industry for decades now. The mining industry has made significant advancements in process improvement tools using equipment, human, and asset tracking capabilities. However, to date, there is no holistic approach or system to identify and manage the bottleneck in the entire value chain of mining. This research proposes a new method to identify and rank the bottlenecks in a mine value chain. The method is applied in a coal mine and the results are presented in the case study.

    Ünlü, Ramazan; Namli, Ersin

From late 2019 to the present day, the coronavirus outbreak tragically affected the whole world and killed tens of thousands of people. Many countries have taken very stringent measures to alleviate the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and are still being implemented. In this study, various machine learning techniques are implemented to predict possible confirmed cases and mortality numbers for the future. According to these models, we have tried to shed light on the future in terms of possible measures to be taken or updating the current measures. Support Vector Machines (SVM), Holt-Winters, Prophet, and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) forecasting models are applied to the novel COVID-19 dataset. According to the results, the Prophet model gives the lowest Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) score compared to the other three models. Besides, according to this model, a projection for the future COVID-19 predictions of Turkey has been drawn and aimed to shape the current measures against the coronavirus.

Kilinc, Kagan; Demir, Selim; Turan, Ibrahim; Mentese, Ahmet; Orem, Asim; Sonmez, Mehmet; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel

Although several studies have investigated the cytotoxic effects of different Rosa species, there has been only limited research into the cytotoxic effect of Rosa canina. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the antioxidant properties, phenolic characterization, and cytotoxic effects of R. canina on human lung (A549) and prostate (PC-3) cancer cells and the possible mechanisms involved. The antioxidant properties and phenolic characterization of the extract were determined using spectrophotometric methods and RP-HPLC, respectively. The cytotoxic activity of the extract was determined using the MTT assay. The mechanism involved in the extract’s cytotoxic effect was then evaluated in terms of apoptosis, the cell cycle, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), and caspase activity using fluorometric and luminometric methods. The TPC value of the extract was 58.97 ± 2.22 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram sample, and ascorbic acid and p-coumaric acid were detected as major phenolics in the extract. R. canina extract exhibited a selective cytotoxic effect on A549 and PC-3 cells compared to normal fibroblast cells. The extract induced cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase and apoptosis via reduced MMP and increased caspase activity in these cells. Phytomedical applications of R. canina may represent promising approaches in the treatment of cancer.

An assessment of phenolic profiles, fatty acid compositions, and biological activities of two Helichrysum species: H. plicatum and H. chionophilum

Acet, Tuba; Ozcan, Kadriye; Zengin, Gokhan

In the present study, we aimed to search and compare the biological activities of the ethanol (EtOH), methanol (MeOH), and ethylacetate (EtOAc) solvent extracts of the flower, stem, and root parts of two Helichrysum plants (H. chionophilum (Hc) and H. plicatum subsp. plicatum (Hp)). The antioxidant properties were determined by using (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) (DPPH) and ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assays. The enzyme inhibitory effects of the extracts were investigated on butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), α-glucosidase, and α-amylase. Palmitic acid (C 16:0) was also determined as major fatty acids in the tested oils (31.21%–67.68%). In both plants, it was found that the EtOAc extracts of the flowers had a strong antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory effect. In conclusion, the results obtained in the present study showed that H. chionophilum and H. plicatum can be seen as a promising source for the natural bioactive compounds that can be used in therapeutic applications. Practical applications: The members of the genus Helichrysum have been widely taken for therapeutic purposes in traditional medicine as well as food. In this context, we investigated the chemical characterization and biological activities of two Helichrysum species extracts (H. chionophilum and H. plicatum subsp. plicatum). Antioxidant capacity, enzyme inhibition and anti-microbial effects were tested for biological activities. Chemical characterization was identified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (for phenolic) and gas chromatography-flame ioanization detector (GC-FID) (for fatty acids). Based on our findings, the species may be valuable for designing novel food products.

Robust Detection of Infrared Maritime Targets for Autonomous Navigation

Wang, Bin; Benli, Emrah; Motai, Yuichi; Dong, Lili; Xu, Wenhai

This paper addresses a problem on infrared maritime target detection robustly in various situations. Its main contribution is to improve the infrared maritime target detection accuracy in different backgrounds, for various targets, using multiple infrared wave bands. The accuracy and the computational time of traditional infrared maritime searching systems are improved by our proposed Local Peak Singularity Measurement (LPSM)-Based Image Enhancement and Grayscale Distribution Curve Shift Binarization (GDCSB)-Based Target Segmentation. The first part uses LPSM to quantize the local singularity of each peak. Additionally, an enhancement map (EM) is generated based on the quantitative local singularity. After multiplying the original image by the EM, targets can be enhanced and the background will be suppressed. The second part of GDCSB-Based Target Segmentation calculates the desired threshold by cyclic shift of the grayscale distribution curve (GDC) of the enhanced image. After binarizing the enhanced image, real targets can be segmented from the image background. To verify the proposed algorithm, experiments based on 13,625 infrared maritime images and five comparison algorithms were conducted. Results show that the proposed algorithm has solid performance in strong and weak background clutters, different wave bands, different maritime targets, etc.
