- MakaleYalnız künye2026The effect of acupressure on symptom management in children: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Akay, Gamze; Yıldız, Muhammed; Oğuzhan, Hatice; Uzun, Sevda
Purpose Pediatric patients often experience distress, pain, and nausea during medical procedures. This meta-analysis aimed to synthesize current evidence on the potential efficacy of acupressure on symptom management among pediatric patients aged 0–19 years. Design and methods This study was designed as a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials . The literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and the YÖK Thesis Center in January 2025 and updated in August 2026, with no restriction on publication year. After the reviews, 17 studies were included in the study. The data were synthesized by meta-analysis and narrative methods. Results The pooled analysis indicated that acupressure was associated with statistically significant reductions in reported anxiety (SMD = −1.021, p < 0.001), pain (SMD = −1.397, p < 0.001), and nausea (SMD = −0.388, p = 0.006). However, substantial statistical heterogeneity was observed for anxiety (I2 = 78.8%) and pain (I2 = 94.4%), and the number of studies available for each outcome was limited (anxiety: n = 6; pain: n = 9; nausea: n = 4). Conclusions and practice implications Current evidence suggests that acupressure may be a promising complementary approach for managing anxiety, pain, and nausea in pediatric patients. However, given the small number of studies per outcome, small sample sizes, and high statistical heterogeneity, these findings should be interpreted with caution. Further rigorous, well-designed RCTs are required to confirm these observations before routine clinical implementation can be recommended.

Objectives This study investigated the effect of the puppet-assisted House-Tree-Person Test (HTP-T) on fear and anxiety levels in children undergoing chemotherapy treatment and the factors influencing these outcomes. Methods The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest quasi-experimental design combined with HTP-T analysis. The study was conducted with 29 children aged 5–12 years receiving chemotherapy at the pediatric hematology-oncology outpatient clinics of a university hospital in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye during the 2022–2024 years. Data were collected using “the Demographic Information Form for Children and Parents, the Children's State Anxiety Scale (CSA), the Children's Fear Scale (CFS), and HTP-T". Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, repeated measures ANOVA, and HTP-T analysis. Results Statistically significant differences were observed in children's mean CSA (F = 3.898, p = 0.026, η2 = 0.122) and CFS (F = 5.313, p = 0.008, η2 = 0.159) scores across the pre-treatment, during-treatment, and post-treatment measurements. The HTP-T analysis revealed that children had difficulty regulating anxiety and fear, expressed concerns about family and environmental events, reported feelings of loneliness, and exhibited strong emotional attachment to their families. Conclusion The study demonstrated that incorporating puppet-assisted HTP-T during chemotherapy contributed to reducing children's fear and anxiety and offered a useful approach for identifying influencing factors. Implications for nursing practice HTP-T, a therapeutic play technique incorporating puppetry and projective methods, may be effective in reducing fear and anxiety among children undergoing chemotherapy.
- MakaleYalnız künye2026The Effect of Parrot Therapy on During Venipuncture Pain in Chronic Patients
Demirağ, Hatice; Tuç, Adile
Objective There are no randomized controlled trial (RCT) in the current literature comparing live, robotic, and visual animal-based therapies. This single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted to comparatively evaluate the effectiveness of live parrot, robotic parrot, and parrot picture therapies on pain during venipuncture in adults with chronic illness. Methods The study included 240 patients randomized into four groups. Groups interacted with live parrots, robotic parrots, or parrot pictures during venipuncture. The control group received no intervention. Pain levels were assessed before and after the procedure using the "Visual Analog Scale (VAS)." Analysis was performed using Chi-Square test, One-way ANOVA and paired samples t-test. Results There was no difference in pre-procedure pain scores between the groups (p ' .05). After the procedure, the VAS score for the live parrot group was 2.01 ± 1.35, for the robotic parrot group 2.03 ± 1.46, for the parrot picture group 2.08 ± 1.62, and for the control group 4.91 ± 1.88. Again, after the procedure, pain scores in all experimental groups were found to be significantly lower than in the control group (p ' .001). Live parrot therapy was found to be the most effective pet therapy, followed by robotic parrot and parrot picture therapy. The reduction in pain in the live parrot group was statistically more significant than in the picture group. Conclusion The research findings revealed that pet therapy applied during venipuncture, especially live animal interaction, may be a potentially effective, safe, and non-pharmacological method for reducing pain. Robotic animals, on the other hand, can be considered a promising alternative when the use of live animals is not possible. It is recommended that these distraction strategies be considered and integration into routine nursing practices be developed as part of patient-centered care.

Aydin, Aydanur; Menekşeoğlu, Ahmet Kıvanç; Öner, Kerim; Ertürk, Engin
The decision to undergo surgery and the significance of the operating theater environment are influenced by several factors, which vary from person to person. Negative perceptions of the operating room environment can influence the decision to undergo surgery and the process of treatment. Virtual reality (VR) technology offers the potential to alter individuals' environmental encounters through the provision of diverse environmental perceptions. This case study evaluates the results of a VR simulation applied during surgery to an individual with no previous surgical experience. A male patient scheduled for arthroscopic meniscus surgery was the subject of a VR simulation. The patient's perception of the simulated environment was transmitted through VR goggles from the time he entered the operating room until he left. However, the VR application was terminated during the administration of anesthesia, and no premedication was administered to the patient. The VR application included nature walks in various regions, including forests, lakeshores, and meadows, accompanied by the sound of birds. Data were collected using a visual analog scale to assess pain levels and a walking test form. The patient, a 35-year-old male, is a high school graduate and is undergoing his first surgical procedure. The patient expressed concerns and fears regarding the decision to undergo surgery. The patient's preoperative anxiety was rated at 9 out of 10 but subsequently decreased to 1 out of 10 following the surgical procedure. The patient rated his satisfaction with the surgical experience as 9 out of 10. The patient did not require sedatives or analgesics during the intraoperative period or for the first 10 hours following the operation. The patient was successfully mobilized at the 15-hour mark following surgery. The patient was highly satisfied with the application. The utilization of VR during surgical procedures has the potential to reduce the necessity for premedication and enhance postoperative compliance among patients.

Findings: The nurses' moral sensitivity scale mean score was 105.2 ± 18.8, and the Minnesota job satisfaction scale mean score was 3.3 ± 0.7. The participants' mean emotional exhaustion score was 25.4 ± 7.3, the depersonalization score average was 15.7 ± 4.6, and the personal accomplishment mean score was 20.5 ± 6.7. The factors affecting the job satisfaction of nurses were found to be moral sensitivity, personal accomplishment, and satisfaction with the unit they worked. Conclusions: Nurses had high levels of burnout due to emotional exhaustion, one of the subdimensions of burnout, and moderate levels of burnout due to depersonalization and personal accomplishment. The moral sensitivity and job satisfaction of nurses are moderate. As the nurses' accomplishment and ethical sensitivity levels increased and their emotional exhaustion levels decreased, their job satisfaction levels increased.

Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of progressive muscle relaxation exercises on pain in patients with sickle cell disease. Materials-Method: This randomized controlled interventional study was conducted in a hospital in Mersin, Turkey between October 2017 and July 2018. The study sample comprised 58 patients who were aged >18 years, conscious, had sickle cell disease, reported pain, and were treated with non-opioid or weak opioid analgesic based on the physician's recommendation (treatment group = 29, control group = 29). Data were collected by the individual presentation form and visual analog scale. During the study, both groups were treated with analgesics prescribed by the physician for three days. In addition to the analgesics, the treatment group was performed progressive muscle relaxation exercises for 30 minutes whereas the control group was rested. Pain level of both groups was evaluated at three time points every day for three days. In the study, frequency distributions and descriptive statistics were presented for categorical and numerical variables, respectively. Chi-square analysis, independent samples t-test, Mann–Whitney U test, three-way ANOVA, and Sidak test were used to analyze the difference between the variables. Results: The mean age of the patients was 29.59 ± 6.94 years, and 53.4% of the patients were female and 69% were single. The mean pain score of the treatment group at the third time point on days 1, 2, and 3 was significantly lower than the control group (p <.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of coping methods for pain, pain location, and complaints accompanying pain (p >.05). Conclusion: Progressive muscle relaxation exercises were found to be effective in the pain management of patients with sickle cell anemia.
