The Mediating and Moderating Roles of Innovation Climate in the Relationship Between Nurses’ Attitudes Toward Artificial Intelligence, Creative Self-Efficacy, and Clinical Competence

Karakaya Suzan, Ozge; Gül, Uğur; Koyuncu, Oğuz; Akdeniz, Canberk

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into health care; however, how nurses’ attitudes toward AI and creative self-efficacy are associated with perceived clinical competence within different organizational contexts remains unclear. Aim: To examine whether perceived climate for innovation statistically mediates the association between nurses’ attitudes toward AI and perceived clinical competence and moderates the association between creative self-efficacy and perceived clinical competence. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 233 nurses recruited online by convenience sampling from hospitals in Türkiye between January and March 2026. Self-report measures assessed attitudes toward AI, creative self-efficacy, perceived climate for innovation, and perceived clinical competence. Pearson correlations and PROCESS Models 4 and 1 with 5000 bootstrap samples tested statistical mediation and moderation. Adjusted analyses included age, gender, previous AI-related training and AI use, educational level, professional experience, and institution type. Results: Attitudes toward AI were indirectly associated with perceived clinical competence through perceived climate for innovation; the adjusted indirect association remained significant (B = 0.0700, SE = 0.0333, 95% CI [0.0173, 0.1453]), consistent with partial statistical mediation. Perceived climate for innovation also moderated the association between creative self-efficacy and perceived clinical competence after adjustment (interaction B = −0.1672, SE = 0.0447, 95% CI [−0.2552, −0.0792]). This positive association became weaker as perceived climate for innovation increased. Conclusion: Attitudes toward AI, creative self-efficacy, perceived climate for innovation, and perceived clinical competence were significantly associated, and the statistical mediation and moderation patterns remained after adjustment. The cross-sectional, self-report data do not establish temporal or causal mechanisms or effects on objectively measured clinical performance or patient outcomes. Implications for Nursing Management: Nurse managers may consider supporting AI literacy, safe AI use, team-based learning, and innovation-supportive work environments. These strategies should be evaluated prospectively using objective clinical and patient outcomes before their effectiveness is inferred.

Paranormal Health Beliefs in Travel Motivation and Experiences: The Case of Gırnavaz Jinn

    Şimşek Evren, Emine

This study was conducted to determine the travel motivations and experiences of paranormal health tourists. In the study, the Gırnavaz Mound in Mardin/Türkiye, where the tomb of the leader of the first Muslim jinn is located, was analyzed. The data were collected with semi-structured interviews conducted with 15 visitors and 2 religious officials. Four main themes and six subthemes were identified during the manual content analysis process. The main themes were named “Paranormal Story: Healing Jinn,” “Motivation for Paranormal Health Tourism,” “Paranormal Health Tourism Experiences,” and “Sense of Healing: Placebo.” Findings reveal that paranormal health tourists are motivated by feelings of helplessness and belief. Their experiences are shaped by ritual participation and shared emotional exchanges with others. The peak experience—encountering a jinn leader in a dream—can be disrupted by environmental factors. Those who reach the peak experience feel a sense of healing that can be attributed to the placebo.

Impact of sprouting pretreatment on physicochemical properties and in vitro digestibility of buckwheat milk

Tunç, Merve Tuğçe; Yılmaz, Fırat; Akdoğan, Arda; Atalar, İlyas; Odabaş, Halil İbrahim

BACKGROUND: Buckwheat is a strategic raw material for plant-based milk production due to its gluten-free nature and rich bioactive profile. However, antinutritional factors and starch structure limit the nutritional quality and technological properties of such beverages. This study aims to investigate the effects of sprouting pretreatment (0, 24, 48, and 72 h) on the physicochemical properties, rheological behavior, phytic acid content, and in vitro protein/phenolics digestibility of buckwheat milk. RESULTS: As the sprouting duration increased, the viscosity of buckwheat milk decreased from 31.42 to 15.42 mPa s (at 72 h) due to the enzymatic hydrolysis of starch and proteins. Rheological analysis revealed that all samples exhibited weak gel behavior. Color analysis showed a decrease in lightness (L*) while redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) values significantly increased with sprouting. The results showed that sprouting significantly reduced phytic acid content, reaching its minimum at 72 h. The highest in vitro protein digestibility was observed at 24 h of sprouting, after which a relative decline occurred due to the formation of protein–polyphenol complexes and metabolic amino acid utilization. Furthermore, total phenolic content, flavonoid content, and antioxidant capacities measured after in vitro digestion were substantially higher in sprouted samples, especially at 48 and 72 h, than in the control. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that a sprouting duration of 48 h represents an optimal balance for the physical stability and nutritional enhancement of buckwheat milk. At this stage, significant increases in bioaccessible phenolics were achieved while maintaining a stable colloidal structure.

The Non-Newtonian Differential Operators Associated With Iterated Generators

    Dedeturk, Mutlu; Yalcin, Numan

This paper investigates non-Newtonian differentiation associated with integer iterates of generator functions. For (Formula presented.), we consider the derivative operators (Formula presented.) and derive explicit first-order representation, transformation, and factorization formulas that relate operators corresponding to different iteration levels. The construction is then extended to higher-order derivatives, where the resulting operators are represented through conjugation with the classical derivative operator Dr. Faà di Bruno’s formula and exponential partial Bell polynomials are used to obtain explicit higher-order expressions. Several examples involving exponential, double-exponential, and quadratic generators illustrate how the general results specialize to familiar non-Newtonian calculi. The results provide a unified treatment of non-Newtonian differentiation based on iterated generators and clarify its relationship with classical differentiation.

Differential Associations Between ESG Performance, Firm Value, and Profitability: Evidence From S&P 500 Companies in Energy and Energy-Related Sectors

Akdeniz, Fatih; Güven, Birol; Zuhal, Mustafa

Amid the growing prominence of sustainability considerations in financial decision-making, the question of how environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance translates into measurable financial outcomes has become particularly salient for industries exposed to intense regulatory pressure and environmental scrutiny, such as the energy sector. Addressing this issue, the paper investigates the relationship between ESG performance and firm-level financial outcomes for a selected sample of 58 S&P 500 companies operating in energy and closely energy-related activities, using historical firm-level data covering 2015–2024. The analysis focuses on two widely used performance indicators, Tobin's Q and ROA, while ESG performance is captured through both a composite score and its environmental, social, and governance sub-dimensions. The empirical models control for firm size, leverage, and sales growth and incorporate firm and year fixed effects with Driscoll–Kraay robust standard errors. The findings indicate that, in the preferred two-way fixed-effects specifications, aggregate ESG performance is negatively associated with both firm value and profitability, although the Tobin's Q association is statistically weak and sensitive to model specification. When the ESG pillars are estimated separately, environmental performance is negatively and significantly associated with both Tobin's Q and ROA, social performance is negatively and significantly associated with ROA but statistically insignificant for Tobin's Q, and governance performance is negatively associated with both outcomes, with weaker statistical evidence for Tobin's Q. In the combined-pillar specifications, the environmental dimension remains negatively and significantly associated with Tobin's Q, while governance is also negatively associated with Tobin's Q and remains weakly negatively associated with ROA. The social dimension is statistically insignificant in both combined-pillar models. Sales growth is positively associated with financial performance, with particularly consistent and statistically significant coefficients across the ROA specifications. Overall, the findings reveal that ESG–financial performance associations are heterogeneous across ESG dimensions and performance measures and suggest that, within the analyzed energy-sector setting, stronger contemporaneous ESG performance does not necessarily translate into higher market valuation or accounting profitability. These results highlight the importance of accounting for firm growth dynamics and sector-specific characteristics when evaluating the financial implications of ESG performance.

Cenozoic Lamprophyres From NE Türkiye: New Constraints on Post-Collisional Metasomatism and Alkaline Magma Origin in the Juvenile Subcontinental Lithospheric Mantle

Arslan, Mehmet; Temizel, İrfan; Krmíček, Lukáš; Yücel, Cem

The Middle Eocene (~43 Ma) and Late Miocene (~6 Ma) lamprophyres cropping out as sills from NE Türkiye can be classified as alkaline lamprophyres. These lamprophyres exhibit moderate contents of K2O (2.22–2.59 and 2.58–2.98 wt%), K2O/Na2O ratios (0.78–1.14 and 0.62–0.94) and Mg# (40.55–46.32 and 56.93–61.52), respectively, and low concentrations of mantle compatible elements. The lamprophyres also have a moderate to relatively high abundance of rare earth elements (ΣREEs = 140–159 and 547–604 ppm, respectively) with significantly fractionated REE patterns (LaN/YbN = 6.82–9.10 and 65.17–71.31, respectively), and are enriched in large-ion lithophile and light REEs but depleted in high-field-strength and heavy REEs. The lamprophyres have homogeneous and moderately low (87Sr/86Sr)i of 0.705048–0.705474 and 0.705252–0.705401, and nearly uniform εNd(i) values varying from −0.47 to 0.20 and 0.54 to 0.79 and εHf(i) values varying from 4.51–6.71 and 5.83–6.18, respectively. They also have a narrow and moderately high Δ7/4Pb range of 6.19–15.41 and 10.62–10.88 and Δ8/4Pb range of 49.56–56.14 and 46.86–47.99, respectively. Petrological modelling suggests that the parental magmas of both the Eocene and Miocene lamprophyres were generated by the low-degree partial melting of phlogopite-bearing spinel-garnet and amphibole-bearing garnet lherzolite sources, respectively. By integrating whole-rock trace elements and isotope compositions with regional geological observations, we propose that the post-collisional Middle Eocene and Late Miocene lamprophyres in the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt originated from the juvenile subcontinental lithospheric mantle sources metasomatized initially by Neotethyan subduction-related fluids during the Eocene, and subsequently overprinted by delaminated lithosphere-derived carbonate components in the Miocene. The lamprophyres likely record a temporal magmatic response to lithospheric delamination and regional thermal upwelling associated with Eocene extensional tectonics, followed by lithospheric thinning during the Miocene in a post-collisional tectonic setting.

Natural Radioactivity and Radiological Risk Assessment of Rocks Around the Mines: A Case Study From the Mastra and Hazine Mağara Mining Areas, Northeastern Türkiye

Sipahi, Ferkan; Çelik, Necati; Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Dizman, Serdar

This study presents a comprehensive assessment of natural radioactivity levels and associated radiological hazards in rock samples collected from Mastra and Hazine Mağara mining sites in the Gümüşhane province, Türkiye. The concentrations of primordial radionuclides (226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) were measured in samples of andesite, granite, and limestone using a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. Complementary whole-rock geochemical analysis (XRF and ICP-MS) was conducted to understand the geochemical controls on radioactivity concentrations. The results reveal significant heterogeneity in activity concentrations both within and between the two sites. For 226Ra, the Hazine Mağara site exhibited a wider range (2.44–22.57 Bq kg−1) with a higher maximum value compared to Mastra (2.65–13.96 Bq kg−1). Similarly, 232Th and 40K activity concentrations showed considerable variability, often linked to the presence of specific accessory minerals like zircon, monazite, and K-feldspar. Geochemical data indicated that element concentrations (K, U, Th) were generally lowest in limestone and highest in granite, showing a strong correlation with the measured activity concentration values. Radiological risk indices, including radium equivalent activity, absorbed dose rate, annual effective dose equivalent, and excess lifetime cancer risk, were calculated. While values remain below international public health safety limits, localized anomalies were identified. Multivariate statistical methods were used to determine the relationship between the 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, Raeq (Bq/kg), Ig, Hex, D (nGy/h), AEDE (μSv/y), AGDE (μSv/y), and ELCR (×10−5). The study concludes that despite these localized anomalies, both mining areas pose an overall minimum environmental radiation risk, underscoring the necessity for site-specific assessments to ensure safe resource utilization and radiation protection.

Phytochemical profiling, biological activities, and molecular docking analysis of Dorycnium pentaphyllum subsp. haussknechtii

Ayna, Adnan; Hakan, Oguzhan; Yapıcı, İsmail; İzol, Ebubekir; Yılmaz, Mustafa Abdullah; Necip, Adem; Yapar, Yakup

BACKGROUND: In the current study, the biological activity fingerprint of Dorycnium pentaphyllum subsp. haussknechtii was investigated by an interdisciplinary approach through analysis of its phytochemical content, antioxidant capacity, enzyme inhibitory potential and molecular docking. RESULTS: The analysis of the phytochemical content by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry was characterized by the presence of flavan-3-ols, such as epicatechin, epigallocatechin, and catechin, as well as quercetin-derived flavonoids such as isoquercitrin. Analysis of the antioxidant capacity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), ferric reducing antioxidant power, Fe3+–Fe2+ reducing and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity methods indicated the strong antioxidant capacity of the plant extract. In addition, the plant extract was able to modulate biological enzyme activity effectively, with IC50 values of 111.78 μg mL−1 for acetylcholinesterase, 22.07 μg mL−1 for butyrylcholinesterase, 1.39 μg mL−1 for α-glucosidase, 7.34 μg mL−1 for carbonic anhydrase I, and 17.41 μg mL−1 for carbonic anhydrase II. To have a better understanding of the molecular mechanism for the plant extract's properties, the major phenolic compounds present in the plant extract were investigated for molecular docking with their respective enzymes. As such, the results revealed a strong binding affinity and conformational stability, with strong hydrogen bonding and π–π interactions. CONCLUSION: Generally, the properties revealed by the plant extract indicate that the phenolic content, strong antioxidant properties, and enzyme inhibition activity of D. pentaphyllum subsp. haussknechtii have shown great potential for being a useful natural source for therapeutic lead compounds.

Financial Simulation of Remote Healthcare Implementation Strategies in Türkiye: A Monte Carlo Analysis Based on Specialty-Specific Eligibility

Demir, Hüseyin; Akar, Tuncay; Mertoğlu, Süleyman; Burmaoğlu, Serhat; Tekinarslan, Merve

The expansion of universal health coverage in Türkiye has intensified pressure on public healthcare providers through high outpatient volumes that strain capacity and financial sustainability. Remote healthcare delivery has emerged as a potential strategy to improve efficiency and access. However, limited evidence exists on how remote outpatient care should be implemented across medical specialties within a universal payer system, or how alternative implementation strategies perform financially. This study evaluates the specialty-specific feasibility and financial impact of remote outpatient care using comprehensive administrative data from a large public training and research hospital in Izmir, supplemented by qualitative input from clinical specialists. The analysis includes 577,984 outpatient visits recorded in 2022 across major medical specialties. Eligibility for remote delivery is identified using observable clinical proxies—imaging requests, laboratory tests, and prescription issuance—to capture visits not requiring physical examination or procedural intervention. Results show that 121,248 visits (21.0%) are suitable for remote delivery, accounting for 16.2% of expenditures ($0.68 million out of $4.20 million). Remote eligibility varies substantially across specialties, with high suitability in dermatology and infectious diseases but limited applicability in device-dependent fields such as pulmonology. Four implementation scenarios are simulated over a 10-year horizon: Regulatory Compliance, Evidence-Based Specialty-Specific, Follow-Up Only, and Hybrid Progressive. The Regulatory Compliance scenario yields the shortest break-even period (3 years) and highest ROI (1185%). The Hybrid Progressive scenario, incorporating phased specialty expansion and AI-supported triage, requires higher upfront costs but generates the largest cumulative net savings ($1.39 million). The findings demonstrate that financially sustainable remote outpatient care can be achieved through carefully designed, specialty-specific implementation strategies.

Towards Sustainable Environment in OECD Nations: The Moderator Role of Renewable Energy in Uncovering the Hidden Link Between Military Expenditure and Ecological Footprint

Ayaydın, Hasan; Ergün, Tolga; Ergün, Hilal Ok; Barut, Abdulkadir; Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip

This study examines the relationships among military spending, renewable energy (RNW), globalisation, economic growth, and ecological footprint in 35 OECD member countries, using data covering 1990–2022. Specifically, this study contributes to this discussion by presenting empirical evidence on the link between military expenditure and ecological footprint, while accounting for the moderating role of RNW in OECD countries. The analysis utilised Kao, Pedroni, and Westerlund cointegration tests, Driscoll-Kraay robust standard error tests, Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality tests, and FMOLS and DOLS techniques for robustness verification. Empirical results show that military spending in OECD countries increases the ecological footprint, leading to environmental degradation. Furthermore, the combined effect of military expenditure and RNW reduces the ecological footprint and contributes to environmental sustainability. The results contribute to the existing literature by underlining the role RNW plays in reducing the ecological footprint of military expenditures and by offering policy recommendations for environmental sustainability. From a managerial and policy perspective, the findings suggest that defense-related institutions and policymakers should integrate environmental sustainability criteria into military planning and procurement strategies. Increasing the use of renewable energy in military infrastructure, logistics, and defense technologies may significantly reduce the ecological footprint associated with military expenditure. Therefore, the transition toward renewable energy supported defense systems can serve as a strategic tool for aligning national security objectives with sustainable development goals.

Antibacterial efficacy of pyrolysis-derived plant fractions against resistant pathogens: a comparative evaluation using nutrient and Müller–Hinton agar

Demirel, Maruf Hurşit; Gül, Abdulkadir; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Özgen, İnanç; Arslanoğlu, Hasan

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the antibacterial potential of pyrolysis-derived extracts from rosehip fruit (RF), orange peel (OP), corn silk (CS), spurge root (ER) and mullein leaf (ML) against antibiotic-resistant pathogens using two different culture media. Bioactive compounds were obtained via a PID-controlled pyrolysis system, and antibacterial activity was evaluated to clarify both extract efficacy and medium-dependent effects on bacterial growth and diffusion. RESULTS: Antibacterial activities were assessed using the agar well diffusion method, with ampicillin as a positive control, against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. A key novelty of this work is the comparative evaluation of extract performance on nutrient agar (NA) and Müller–Hinton agar (MHA). Among all samples, the ML extract exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity across all tested strains, producing inhibition zones of 18.85 mm against E. coli and 17.15 mm against E. faecalis on NA, compared with 13.05 mm and 13.60 mm on MHA, respectively. CS and ER extracts showed moderate antibacterial effects, with consistently higher inhibition zones on NA than on MHA. Ampicillin generated substantially larger inhibition zones on NA (33.35 mm for E. coli and 34.45 mm for P. aeruginosa) compared with MHA (13.80 and 27.70 mm, respectively), confirming the strong influence of culture medium composition on measurable antibacterial activity. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that both plant extracts and ampicillin exhibit higher antibacterial activity on NA than on MHA. The pronounced efficacy of the ML extract highlights pyrolysis-derived plant fractions as promising natural antimicrobials and emphasizes the critical importance of culture medium selection.

Organic Geochemical Properties of the Miocene Coal Seam in the Ömerler Field, Tunçbilek Basin, Western Türkiye: Implications for Depositional Environment

    Saydam Eker, Çiğdem; Köse, Yeliz

In this comprehensive study, which was conducted based on data obtained from the Ömerler Field İğdekuzu underground mine located in the Tunçbilek Basin (Kütahya/W. Turkey), the aim was to reveal the organic matter content, origin, thermal maturation level, depositional environment, and conditions of Miocene-aged coals. Coal samples collected from the underground coal mine were subjected to proximate analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis/Total organic carbon (TOC), gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis (GC–MS) of aromatic and saturated biomarkers and extraction analysis. On an air-dry basis, the average moisture (Mad), volatile matter (Vad), ash (Aad), fixed carbon (FCad) and total sulphur contents of coals are 2.79%, 33.93%, 18.71%, 44.31% and 1.40%, respectively. TOC content is so high; the highest mean TOC content is 86.75% calculated in the upper coal seam, followed by the middle seam with 85.14% and the lower seam with 79.01%. In the GC–MS of the coal samples, the n-alkane distribution varies between C12 and C36. The lowest homohopane index (HHI) value was calculated as 0.02 for OR-5, and the highest HHI value was 0.05 for TB-8. The upper coal seam sample exhibits the order of C29>C28>C27 sterane (%), and the lower and middle coal seam samples exhibit the order of C29>C27>C28 sterane (%). The coal samples under study exhibit early mature oil window behaviour according to all geochemical maturity parameters. These coals indicate a mixed organic matter of Type II/III and III kerogens, as demonstrated by medium and long-chain n-alkanes, terrestrial/aquatic organic matter ratios (TAR), aquatic plants to terrestrial plants ratios (Paq), C24 Tet/C26 Tri and C19/C23 Tri ratios, and distributions of C27–29 ααα20R, likely deposited in a paralic, oxic-dyoxic transitional environment. Although the TOC value of the Miocene-aged coal samples is so high, they have not yet reached the level of producing hydrocarbons due to low and medium hydrogen index (HI), low quality index (QI), production index (PI), and bitumen index (BI) values, but it has been evaluated that they have the potential to produce gas.

Approximate Analytical Solutions of the Time-Fractional Swift–Hohenberg Equation via Yang Transform Adomian Decomposition Method

    Ali, Mustafa Ahmed; Merdan, Mehmet

This study examines approximate analytical solutions of the time-fractional Swift–Hohenberg equation involving the Caputo–Fabrizio fractional derivative. The main objective of this study is to investigate efficient analytical approximation techniques using the Yang transform Adomian decomposition method (YTADM). The proposed approach combines the Yang transform with the Adomian decomposition technique to construct a rapidly convergent series solution for the fractional partial differential equation. The effects of the fractional order and system parameters on the behavior of the solution have been examined via tables and are graphically represented. The results confirm that the proposed method provides accurate and computationally efficient approximate solutions to the fractional Swift–Hohenberg equation. These results show that YTADM is an appropriate and useful analytical tool to solve nonlinear fractional partial differential equations arising in mathematical physics, especially those equations involving nonsingular fractional operators. The principal contribution of this work effort is the development and application of the YTADM framework for solving the fractional Swift–Hohenberg equation; therefore, it serves as a reliable analytic tool for nonlinear fractional partial differential equations arising in mathematical physics.

Green Transformational Leadership, Creativity, and Organizational Culture: A Structural Model of Pro-Environmental Behavior in an Emerging Cosmetics Market

    Baltacı, Duygu Çınar; Büyükbeşe, Tuba

Understanding the behavioral foundations of green transformation within firms requires attention to both leadership processes and the motivational mechanisms that shape employee action. Drawing on transformational leadership theory, the resource-based view, and self-determination theory, this study investigates how green transformational leadership (GTL) relates to pro-environmental behavior (PEB) through the creative and contextual conditions that support intrinsic motivation. Survey data from 1063 employees in the Turkish cosmetics industry were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that green creativity (GC) transmits the influence of GTL on PEB, whereas green organizational culture (GOC) strengthens the conditions under which this influence is expressed. These findings clarify how leadership, creativity, and cultural support jointly underpin employees' environmental engagement. The study contributes to research on organizational greening by highlighting the motivational and contextual pathways through which leadership encourages sustainable behavior in emerging market settings.

The Impact of Financial Stability, Globalization, and Economic Stability on Ecological Footprint From the Perspective of EKC Hypothesis: New Evidence From a Fourier Panel Data Analysis for BRICS-T Countries

Sancar, Canan; Akbaş, Yusuf Ekrem; Suluk, Seher; Atay Polat, Melike; Aslan, Alper

The Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis, which states that the increase in growth up to a certain income level increases environmental pollution and the increase in growth after reaching this income level decreases environmental pollution, has recently started to be investigated by including economic development and financial development in the framework of this hypothesis to better investigate the hypothesis. This study aims to investigate the impact of financial stability, economic stability, globalization, energy use, and growth on the ecological footprint in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey. In addition, the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis is also tested while examining this relationship. The Panel Fourier approach is applied to test these relationships in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey over the period 1996–2022. The coefficient estimation results show that economic stability, economic globalization, growth, and energy use have a positive impact on the ecological footprint in Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey, but financial stability reduces the ecological footprint. Moreover, an inverted-N relationship was found between economic growth and pollution in these countries, which means that the Environmental Kuznets Curve is invalid in these countries in the relevant period. The results obtained from causality analysis support the results of coefficient estimation. Accordingly, a unidirectional causality was found from explanatory variables to the ecological footprint in most of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and Turkey.

Foreign Direct Investment and Growth Impact on Pollution in the EU Countries: Empirical Analysis of the EKC and Pollution Halo Hypothesis

Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip; Ayaydın, Hasan; Soto, Gonzalo Hernández; Pala, Fahrettin

Foreign direct investment inflows are an important factor in the development of countries. Rising FDI can cause unexpected environmental consequences by changing technology use or energy consumption. The study examined the relationships between fossil energy consumption, carbon emission rate, and FDI for 27 European Union countries in the period 2006–2021. In addition, for the first time in this study, EU countries were divided into two according to their income levels and re-analysed. Panel data method and robust Driscoll and Kraay (1998) estimator were used in empirical analyses. The research findings show that a one-unit increase in FDI across EU countries results in a 0.055% increase in GDP and fossil fuel consumption, respectively, and a −0.155% decrease in pollution. These results support the pollution halo hypothesis, which posits that foreign direct investment reduces environmental degradation. The research findings support the pollution halo hypothesis, which states that FDI reduces environmental degradation. It also confirms that the EKC hypothesis, which states that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between pollution and GDP, is valid in 27 EU countries. However, it has been determined that the pollution haven hypothesis is valid in low-income EU countries. Low-income EU countries should encourage more foreign investment in technology-intensive and environmentally friendly areas and develop various environmental regulations in this direction. The results obtained from the research are expected to provide benefits and insights to policy makers, researchers, and industrialists to increase environmental awareness. The results suggest that low-income EU countries should encourage technology-intensive and environmentally friendly investments, improve green financing and investment conditions, and develop regulations to strengthen environmental standards, so that they can limit environmental degradation while preserving the general welfare-enhancing benefits of FDI.

Tourism in a Warming World: Climate Change and Inbound Expenditure in Leading Tourism Economies

Kömürcüoğlu, Ömer Faruk; Kömürcüoğlu, Elif Duygu; Hayaloğlu, Pınar

Climate change is a global risk reshaping tourism through destination attractiveness, service continuity, and travel risk perception. Yet tourism research has largely focused on traditional determinants such as income, price competition, and global integration, while multidimensional evidence on climate impacts remains limited. This study examines the link between climate change and tourism inbound expenditure in 12 leading tourism economies over 2004–2019. Climate change is measured using a PCA-based index combining per capita CO2 emissions with temperature and precipitation volatility. This approach captures both average climate conditions and fluctuations in the climate regime. MMQR is employed to account for heterogeneous effects, with economic size, exchange rate, and globalization included as controls. Results show that increases in the climate change index significantly reduce tourism inbound expenditure. Robustness is confirmed by PCSE and FGLS estimators, while causal linkages are assessed using the HPJ test. By showing that multidimensional climate pressure constrains the expenditure performance of major tourism economies, the study extends the application of destination resilience theory to a macroeconomic setting. It also highlights the need to integrate climate adaptation, resilient infrastructure, and ecosystem protection into sustainable tourism planning.

Valorization of pomegranate peel waste through pyrolysis-liquid-assisted ultrasound extraction: antioxidant, antibacterial and targeted phytochemical characterization

Gül, Abdulkadir; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Özgen, İnanç; Yılmaz, Fırat; Deniz, Sermin; Arslanoğlu, Hasan

Background: Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel is a phenolic-rich processing by-product, but its valorization commonly relies on conventional solvents. This study examined an integrated approach in which pomegranate peel pyrolysis liquid (PP-PL) was repurposed as the extraction medium for ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of the same biomass. The methodological originality lies specifically in using biomass-derived PP-PL in UAE. Results: PP-PL-assisted extract (PP-E) and an aqueous control extract (AQ-E), prepared from the same peel batch under identical UAE conditions, were compared. The apparent gravimetric recovery of PP-E was 202.5 g kg−1. PP-E showed approximately two-fold higher total phenolic and flavonoid contents than AQ-E. In vitro agar well diffusion screening revealed the largest inhibition zone for PP-E against Staphylococcus aureus at 80 g L−1 (22.65 ± 1.50 mm), whereas AQ-E produced no detectable inhibition zones against the tested strains at the same concentration. PP-E achieved DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS+ (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) radical-scavenging values of 92.42 ± 0.25% and 97.00 ± 0.17%, respectively, and showed pronounced total antioxidant capacity and iron(III) ion (Fe3+)- and copper(II) ion (Cu2+)-reducing capacities. Targeted liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) using authentic standards quantified six phenolics, with ellagic acid as the predominant analyte (2015.10 mg kg−1 extract). Conclusion: Integration of pomegranate peel pyrolysis with PP-PL-assisted UAE generated an extract exhibiting in vitro antioxidant properties and antibacterial potential in agar well diffusion screening, providing an alternative route for pomegranate peel valorization. This strategy supports the further development of biomass-derived extraction media for recovering value-added compounds from agro-industrial residues.

Kalehisar Archaeological Site, located near Mahmudiye Village in the Alaca district of Çorum, provides important insight into the Anatolian Seljuk period and 13th–14th century settlements in Central Anatolia. The main objective of this study is to determine the location and depth of possible buried archaeological remains within the archaeological site. This approach not only guides future excavations but also contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of settlement patterns and architectural practices during the Seljuk period. To achieve this, a comprehensive geophysical survey was conducted, employing magnetometry, electrical resistivity tomography and ground penetrating radar methods. Spectral analysis was used to interpret magnetic anomalies and identify potential buried features. Ground penetrating radar measurements provided high-resolution subsurface imaging, allowing for the detection of fine-scale stratigraphic variations and potential shallow buried remains. Electrical resistivity tomography helped identifying subsurface structures with contrasting resistivity down to 10-m depth. Integrated geophysical results revealed wall continuations extending from the excavation area, alongside other buried features such as ceramic/pottery kilns and a possible mosque in a few depths from the surface. These findings are consistent with Seljuk-era settlements and can aid future excavations by optimizing resources and preserving archaeological integrity.
