Complex subvolcanic magma plumbing system of an alkali basaltic maar-diatreme volcano (Elie Ness, Fife, Scotland)

    Gernon, T. M.; Upton, B. G. J.; Ugra, R.; Yücel, C.; Taylor, R. N.; Elliott, H.

Alkali basaltic diatremes such as Elie Ness (Fife, Scotland) expose a range of volcanic lithofacies that points to a complex, multi -stage emplacement history. Here, basanites contain phenocrysts including pyrope garnet and sub-calcic augites from depths of similar to 60 km. Volcanic rocks from all units, pyroclastic and hypabyssal, are characterised by rare earth element (REE) patterns that show continuous enrichment from heavy REE (HREE) to light REE (LREE), and high Zr/Y that are consistent with retention of garnet in the mantle source during melting of peridotite in a garnet lherzolite fades. Erupted garnets are euhedral and unresorbed, signifying rapid ascent through the lithosphere. The magmas also transported abundant pyroxenitic clasts, cognate with the basanite host, from shallower depths (similar to 35-40 km). These clasts exhibit wide variation in texture, mode and mineralogy, consistent with growth from a range of compositionally diverse melts. Further, clinopyroxene phenocrysts from both the hypabyssal and pyroclastic units exhibit a very wide compositional range, indicative of polybaric fractionation and magma mixing. This is attributed to stalling of earlier magmas in the lower crust principally from similar to 22 to 28 km as indicated by pyroxene thermobarometry. Many clinopyroxenes display chemical zoning profiles, occasionally with mantles and rims of higher magnesium number (Mg#) suggesting the magmas were mobilised by juvenile basanite magma. The tuffs also contain alkali feldspar megacrysts together with Feclinopyroxene, zircon and related salic xenoliths, of the 'anorthoclasite suite' - inferred to have crystallised at upper mantle to lower crustal depths from salic magma in advance of the mafic host magmas. Despite evidence for entrainment of heterogeneous crystal mushes, the rapidly ascending melts experienced negligible crustal contamination. The complex association of phenocrysts, megacrysts and autoliths at Elie Ness indicates thorough mixing in a dynamic system immediately prior to explosive diatreme-forming eruptions. Aydin, Sinan; Akkan, Yasar; Arpaz, Ercan; Koparan, Bulent; Iaman, A; Eskicumali, A

In this study, we describe vocational school students' practices and perceptions of online learning based on interviews and observations. First, we identify student characteristics within online classes. Then, we report student perceptions of online lectures. Finally, we summarize our recommendations to improve the online teaching. The methodology used in this study was qualitative data-collection techniques to obtain vocational school student views on online education and educational processes. For this purpose, two stages of data collection were used in this study these were one-on-one open-ended interviews and think-aloud observation. According to data analysis from this study, communication between students and teachers has a basic effect on shaping students' perceptions and approach to online learning. Also, they have some negative ideas of using and implementations of technology in lectures. Included in this finding is that the meaning assigned by students to any technological material used in lectures is directly connected with the way this material is implemented. Another important finding is that planning of course, assessment and curriculum plays basic role in student's concentrate on lectures and success in online learning. We investigated only a few of the possible relationships between perception of the online environment, the technological materials used in lectures, students' approach to online learning, and students' perceptions of this learning way. Although Web resources and community were mentioned in this study, they may play a more effective role in student online learning than was analyzed in this study. Some additional factors that may effect student perceptions needed to be investigated are the link between perception and outcome, faculty use and knowledge, faculty perceptions and training. Finite Element Based Investigation of Backfill Effects on Seismic Behavior of a Cantilever Wall

Cakir, Tufan; Drusa, M; Marschalko, M; Yilmaz, I; Segallini, A; Ferrero, AM; Bednarik, M

A series of finite element analyses were conducted to investigate the backfill effects on seismic behavior of a cantilever retaining wall incorporating backfill and subsoil interactions. Considering four different backfill soil conditions, the dynamic analyses of backfill-cantilever wall-soil/foundation system were carried out in time domain through ANSYS general purpose finite element computer program. The cohesionless soil was modelled as an elasto-plastic medium with viscous boundary applied on the artificial boundary of soil to simulate the wave energy absorption. Backfill-cantilever wall interface behavior was taken into account by using interface elements between the wall and soil to allow for de-bonding. The magnitudes of lateral displacements and stresses were determined. The obtained results show that the earthquake behavior of cantilever retaining walls can change considerably due to the backfill interaction. Thus, the backfill interaction should be considered in design criteria of cantilever walls. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Nonlinear Motion Control of a Column Using a Coupled Gyroscope

    Ünker, F.; Çuvalci, O.; Sener, S; Saridogan, E; Staub, S

In this paper, a system of the gyroscopes coupled via the massless torsional springs and the massless torsional dampers mounted on the tip mass of a column subjected to a vibrating base is considered. The coupled gyroscopes are assumed to have reverse angular speeds, and the rotations to eliminate the torques due to the springs and the dampers. Taking advantage of the angular momentum of the rotating gyroscope, gyrostabilizer systems are expected to become more widely actualized as they provide an effective means of motion control with several significant advantages for various structures. The non-linear motions of the gyro-column system and the equations of motion for the system are derived following energy (Lagrange) based approaches and examples provided. On the other hand, the effect of the angular velocities of the gyroscopes are studied, and it is shown that the angular velocity (spin velocity) of a gyroscope has a significant effect on the behavior of the dynamic motion. It is also shown how the dampers and springs due to the motion between the suporting gimbals influence the dynamic behavior of the column. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Mark Ravenhill's some explicit polaroids: a play as the reverberation of consumerist culture

    Dogan, Caglayan; Cubukcu, F

Some Explicit Polaroids is one of the most sensational plays reflects consumerist culture of 2000s twentysometings is described as controversial. Some Explicit Polaroids is a political criticism on the confrontation of the two generations and reflects consumerist tenets, which hold values of globalisation. This study tries to prove that Ravenhill's work is totally reflection of the logic of consumerism and post-consumerism in terms of contemporary British society that is subjected to contemporary plays mostly. This study particularly unveils the perception of consumerist culture that is embodied within the scope of Ravenhill's perspective on British society; therefore, it aims to shed some light the globalised and cruelly capitalised world. The beginning of this study discusses the ongoing understanding of theatre and its representative perspectives after nasty nineties, as well as the social, economic, and political processes that led to the arrival of In-Yer-Face Theatre. Additionally, Mark Ravenhill's theatre aesthetic and his contributions towards contemporary British Theatre are briefly revealed. In this study, the evaluations written on consumerism and globalization are dealt with according to their resonances in the play. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The link between unemployment rate and real output in Eurozone: A panel error correction approach

    Dogru, Bulent; Ozsahin, M

In this paper we investigate the relationship between economic growth andunemployment in Eurozone through the implementation of Okun's Law using annual panel dataset covering the time period 2000-2012. Panel error correction and panel co-integration methods are used to test the linkage between unemployment and growth rate. We also investigate unemployment hysteresis using several non-stationary panel unit root techniques for unemployment hysteresis in all Euroregions. Findings suggest that Okun's Law is valid but coefficients are less thanOkun's coefficient for USA and other empirical studies on developed countries. Also we find that the relationship between economic growth rate and unemployment rate vary between countries.

Physicochemical characteristics of a novel activated carbon produced from tea industry waste

Gundogdu, Ali; Duran, Celal; Senturk, H. Basri; Soylak, Mustafa; Imamoglu, Mustafa; Onal, Yunus

Tonnes of waste are generated during tea production in Turkey, one of the black tea producing countries in the world. These wastes are not used for any purposes throughout industrial sector. The objective of this study is to bring in economic value to waste materials by producing activated carbons from wastes of a tea plant and to characterize their physicochemical properties. Three types of activated carbons were produced by chemical activation using zinc chloride from tea industry wastes (TIW). Mesoporous structure and surface area rise as the ratio of ZnCl2/TIW increases. When the ratios of ZnCl2/TIW were selected as 1/2:1, 1:1, and 2:1, mesoporous activated carbons are found in the percentages of 10.9%, 39.9% and 77.7% with BET surface areas of 706, 1066 and 1141 m(2) g(-1), respectively. The resultant activated carbons were characterized by analyses of proximate-ultimate, FT-IR, SEM, TGA, methylene blue-iodine numbers, and surface functional groups. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. A slab detachment and delamination model for the generation of Carboniferous high-potassium I-type magmatism in the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: The Kose composite pluton

    Dokuz, Abdurrahman

The Hercynian Kose composite pluton (KCP) is located in the Eastern Pontides, Turkey, and consists of two units of high-K calc-alkaline, primarily peraluminous granites: (i) the internal body, and (ii) the external body. The internal body, which was emplaced at 322-318 Ma ((40)Ar/(39)Ar ages on biotite and hornblende, respectively), displays a wide compositional range (49-71 wt.% SiO(2)) and contains several lithologies: hybrid equigranular rocks, microgranular magmatic enclaves, mafic dikes, porphyry dikes and mylonites. The external body, which was emplaced at 306.7 Ma ((40)Ar/(39)Ar age on K-feldspar), consists exclusively of monzogranite (> 71 wt.% SiO(2)). Field relationships, mineralogy, major- and trace element geochemistry, and initial Sr-Nd isotope values (I(sr)= 0.70821 to 0.71002, e(Nd)(t) = -6.6 to -8.0) show that the internal body was differentiated and evolved by crystal fractionation and magma mixing processes. The end-members of the mixing process were a mafic rock and a felsic rock. Mafic magma was derived from a relatively deep-seated (25-30 km) crustal storage reservoir, not directly from the mantle, and underwent significant differentiation by fractional crystallization and crustal contamination before mixing. In addition, these magma storages probably supplied the additional heat necessary to initiate crustal melting. Some of the additional heat may have also been released by the radiogenic decay of heat producing elements. Eventually, the existing felsic magma from the melting of K-bearing meta-greywackes was raised to its emplacement level at a depth of similar to 10-16 km. After partial crystallization, it was sporadically intruded by modified mafic magma from the deeper crustal reservoir to generate hybrid rocks. The hybrid rocks were then elevated to a shallower depth by normal faults during the collapse of the orogen and erosion. Mylonites that were later overprinted by pseudotachylites are typically constrained to the internal body and are regarded as markers of this event. The external body is characterized by a significantly less radiogenic and limited range of Sr-Nd isotope values (I(sr)= 0.70639 to 0. 70792, e(Nd)(t) = -4.4 to -6.5) than those of the internal body and a lack of rocks documenting the open system differentiation processes. Fractional crystallization is the exclusive process responsible for the elemental range within the body. The rocks also contain less biotite relative to those of the internal body. All these involve less K-bearing mid-crustal rocks (orthogneisses) in their source, which was probably located at depths near the lower crust. The absence of purely lower crustal-derived melts can be explained by the removal of this type of material during the formation of the parental melt. This melt later ascended to its emplacement level at a depth of around similar to 5-10 km and cut the hybrid rocks of the internal body and regional metamorphic rocks that had been raised previously due to ongoing erosion. The melt that injected into the cracks of the internal body crystallized into porphyries because there was not enough time for the entire crystallization of magma. The data presented here indicate that late Early Carboniferous and Late Carboniferous magmatism occurred in a collisional setting. Slab detachment and subsequent delamination seem to be the most plausible mechanisms for the generation of the Hercynian high-K calc-alkaline magmatism in the Eastern Pontides, Turkey. Although injuries caused by the home-made weapons such as mole guns, which are intended to fight off moles, are rare in Turkey they do still happen. They generally involve minor accidents and cause simple injuries to the hand. In this case we present a patient who involves a trauma to the left hand with fragmental fracture of the first metacarpal caused while checking whether a mole gun had fired or not. This injury is an example of an accident related to primitive, home- made weapons, used particularly in rural areas.

Crystal fractionation of adakitic magmas in the crust-mantle transition zone: Petrology, geochemistry and U-Pb zircon chronology of the Seme adakites, eastern Pontides, NE Turkey

Eyuboglu, Yener; Santosh, M.; Chung, Sun-Lin

Plutonic and porphyritic intrusions of adakitic rocks are widely distributed in the southern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt in Turkey. Ranging in age from late Paleocene to early Eocene, these intrusions provide critical information to evaluate the early Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Mediterranean region. Here we report the results from our field, petrologic, geochemical and zircon U-Pb geochronological studies on adakitic intrusions in the Seme area from the southern part of eastern Pontides belt. The Seme granitoid, Daldibi dacite and Aslanca dacite porphyry from this region carry abundant plagioclcase, amphibole and biotite phenocrysts and have geochemical affinities typical of adakites including high SiO2 (58.48-75.6wt.%), Al2O3 (15.78-18.28wt.%), Na2O (3.94-5.08wt.%), Sr (506-1413ppm), and La (12.6-52.9ppm), moderate K2O (1.77-2.76wt.%), and low Y (4.7-14.2ppm) and Yb (0.28-1.29ppm). The early Eocene intrusions in the Seme area have compositional similarities with high-slica adakites, and their geochemical features suggest the involvement of slab-derived melts. The zircons separated from these rocks show euhedral crystal shapes with oscillatory cores typical of crystallization from magmas, as also confirmed by their high Th/U ratios (0.78 to 1.15). U-Pb analyses of zircons from the quartz diorite yielded a weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 53.16±0.45Ma. Zircon grains from the Aslanca dacite porphyry occurring as a late phase within the Seme body show U-Pb isotopic ages of 53 and 52Ma concordant with U-Pb ages of zircons from quartz diorite. Based on major, trace and rare earth element data, we present a model suggesting crystal fractionation and/or differentation processes of subduction-related adakitic magmas stored in the crust-mantle transition zone, and their transfer into shallow depths of the overriding continental lithosphere.
