In this study, we describe vocational school students' practices and perceptions of online learning based on interviews and observations. First, we identify student characteristics within online classes. Then, we report student perceptions of online lectures. Finally, we summarize our recommendations to improve the online teaching. The methodology used in this study was qualitative data-collection techniques to obtain vocational school student views on online education and educational processes. For this purpose, two stages of data collection were used in this study these were one-on-one open-ended interviews and think-aloud observation. According to data analysis from this study, communication between students and teachers has a basic effect on shaping students' perceptions and approach to online learning. Also, they have some negative ideas of using and implementations of technology in lectures. Included in this finding is that the meaning assigned by students to any technological material used in lectures is directly connected with the way this material is implemented. Another important finding is that planning of course, assessment and curriculum plays basic role in student's concentrate on lectures and success in online learning. We investigated only a few of the possible relationships between perception of the online environment, the technological materials used in lectures, students' approach to online learning, and students' perceptions of this learning way. Although Web resources and community were mentioned in this study, they may play a more effective role in student online learning than was analyzed in this study. Some additional factors that may effect student perceptions needed to be investigated are the link between perception and outcome, faculty use and knowledge, faculty perceptions and training. Ashyralyyev, Charyyar; Akkan, Yasar
This article studies the numerical solution of inverse problems for the multidimensional elliptic equation with Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and Neumann type overdetermination. We present first and second order accuracy difference schemes. The stability and almost coercive stability inequalities for the solution are obtained. Numerical examples with explanation on the implementation illustrate the theoretical results.
- MakaleYalnız künye2012Generalization Strategies of Linear and Quadratic Pattern: A Comparison of 6th-8th Grade Students
Akkan, Yasar; Çakiroglu, Unal
Different representations of patterns have positive effects on the formation of the basis of algebra. Hence, it is important to investigate the strategies about pattern generalization for students' future learning about algebra. Thus, this study aims to define the generalizations about linear and quadratic patterns and also comparing the generalization strategies of 6th - 8th grades. The sample consisted of 18 students at 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The data collection tool has 4 problems and the collected data is classified through the generalization strategies in the related literature. The findings illustrate those at all linear and quadratic patterns, the variety and the correct generalization abilities are increasing due to the increasing of students' grades. Generally, most of the students used recursive or additive strategies, but only a few number of students used explicit strategies.

Çakiroglu, Unal; Akkan, Yasar; Güven, Bulent
Determining the reflections of technology integration applications that are to be performed in our schools is important to light the way of first steps of integration. in this research, the effect of a web-based instruction environment used by 31 different teachers in a high school to school culture is set forth, The school culture is analyzed within the frame of thoughts and relations of teachers and directors and the spread of these applications that are new for the school Case study methodology has been applied in this study; the qualitative and quantitative data have Peen assessed together. The qualitative data of the study include the interviews with teachers, in-class observations, interviews with school directors; the quantitative data are obtained from the surveys applied on teachers. In addition to this, the records obtained from web-based instruction environment have been also used tor interpreting other data At the end of the study, positive changes have been detected over the thoughts and relations of teachers and directors. Moreover, during this research, even though there have been some exceptions, spread of web based instruction activities among teachers has taken Mace in parallel with the general technology diffusion theory. As a result we may say that thanks to this research, a culture based on the changes on the teachers and directors and school, usage of technology has started to be formed. Within this direction, the directors, teachers who are the important elements of school. culture for technology integration have made suggestions for the applications to he applied in school.

Akkan, Yasar
Although the use of physical manipulatives, which have been emphasized to use in preschool education program and primary and secondary mathematics curriculum, in classroom environments is old, it is very new to use virtual manipulatives in classroom environments. The selection, preparation, and the integration to learning environments of both types of manipulatives are the most basic duties of teachers. However, the experiences, of using the physical and virtual manipulatives in course environments, of teachers and pre-service teachers are influenced by beliefs about the nature, teaching and learning of mathematics. The aim of this study is to determine and compare the beliefs of teachers and pre-service teachers in different branches for the use of virtual and physical manipulatives in mathematics education. For this purpose, 148 teachers, in the provinces of Trabzon, Kars and Gümüşhane, and 228 pre-service teachers, in the Education Faculties of Karadeniz Technical University and Kafkas University, have been applied two types of scales and interviews have been conducted with 40 teachers and pre-service teachers selected from that sample. Frequencies, percentages and arithmetic averages have been used to analyze the data. As a result, the majority of teachers and pre-service teachers have been identified to carry positive beliefs for the use of virtual and physical manipulatives in mathematics education and they have expressed that they desire to use both types of manipulatives more in the future.
