Examination and comparison of Mobile GIS technology for real time geo-data acquisition in the field

    Döner, Fatih; Yomralioǧlu, T.

Scientific studies associated with land require large amount of data. The data is often collected during field studies with the use of pencil and paper based method. The method is labour-intensive and susceptible to recording and georeferencing errors during transcription. Recent advances in mobile computing, positioning and software now make it possible to bring field and office activities into a collaborative environment, thereby minimizing human errors and time delays. This paper assesses the use of Mobile Geographic Information Systems (MGIS) as an appropriate tool for geo-data acquisition applications. Firstly the computing, positioning, software and communication technology behind the system is presented. A Mobile Geographic Information System developed for field data acquisition based on the combination of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) is described. Finally, the system is tested in two field studies to examine its effectiveness compared to traditional methods in terms of accuracy, cost and project completion time. The field studies demonstrate the noticeable gains in efficiency and cost saving achieved with the use of the MGIS technology, Results of the field studies verify that MGIS is very useful for georeferenced data acquisition applications.

New chemical weathering indices for estimating the mechanical properties of rocks: A case study from the Kürtün Granodiorite, NE Turkey

    Ceryan, Şener

The chemical weathering of rock proceeds by water-rock interaction. During weathering geochemically mobile elements, alkali and alkali-earth elements are easily leached from rocks, leaving the residual elements to combine with components from the atmosphere to form new minerals. No single, weathering index given in the literature fits the model of the process involved in chemical weathering outlined above. This study deals with the derivation of three new chemical weathering indices oy taking both chemical processes such as leaching and new mineral formation into account. The new indices are chemical leaching index (CLI), chemical weathering product index (CWPI) and total chemical weathering index (TCWI). These indices are applied to selected weathering profiles in the Kürtün granodiorite, NE Turkey, in order to estimate the effects of chemical weathering on the physico-mechanical properties of rock materials. The relative variation of the mechanical properties and TCWI display a statistically significant correlation. Besides, it is shown that TCWI and weatherability index, originally defined by Hodder (1984) can be used together to evaluate the effect of chemical weathering on the mechanical behaviour of rocks.

Frequency optimization of laminated composite angle-ply plates with circular hole

    Topal, U.; Uzman, Ü.

The fundamental frequencies of simply supported symmetrically laminated composite angle-ply plates with central circular holes with a given material system are maximized with respect to fibre orientations. The first-order shear deformation (FSDT) theory is used for finite element analysis. Modified feasible direction (MFD) method is used for the optimization routine. Also, the optimum fibre orientations are obtained using golden section (GS) method to compare with MFD method. Finally, the significant effects of different number of layers, boundary conditions, plate aspect ratios, hole diameter-to-width ratio, material anisotropy and antisymmetric lay-up on the results are demonstrated.

Laboratory study of expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam used with expansive soils

Ikizler, S. Banu; Aytekin, Mustafa; Nas, Evin

The reduction of transmitted lateral swelling pressures on retaining structures constructed in expansive soils is investigated. Swelling pressures will develop if the soil is not allowed to swell freely. The magnitude of swelling pressure depends on the degree of expansion permitted. When a little soil expansion is allowed, the swelling pressure may be decreased considerably relative to the case of no expansion. This study examines the role of expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam in accommodating soil expansion and hence reducing swelling pressures on adjacent structures. Several hypothetical cases are presented whereby reductions on the transmitted lateral pressures due to expansive soils are examined for different thickness of EPS geofoam.

Mineral content of some Lucerne cultivars for livestock

Yolcu, Halil; Dasci, Mahmut; Turan, Metin

The purpose of this study was to assess the mineral contents of twelve lucerne cultivars on the highlands for livestock. Lucerne cultivars (Bilensoy, alfa-484, Resis, alfa-1312, Savas, Kayseri, alfa-1313, Planet, Seker, Daisy, Bilensoy-80, CW-3567) were collected from cultivated fields. In general, Ca, Fe and Mn contents of the lucerne cultivars were the highest in Bilensoy cultivar, N in Planet cultivar, K in Savas cultivar, P in Daisy cultivar, Mg in alfa-1313 cultivar and Zn and Cu in Bilensoy-80 cultivar. Bilensoy, Daisy and Seker cultivars especially had very high mineral contents. The determination of mineral contents of Lucerne cultivars has been a phase in the evaluation of impacts to animal feeding. Lucerne cultivars had a very high nutritional potential and their N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe and Zn values were higher than those required for animal nutrition. Because of high digestion, taste, cheapness of Lucerne plant and provision of macro and micro mineral, it has very important raw material nutrition for animal nourishment.

The effects of various fertilization and seeding patterns on trace minerals content of lucerne and smooth bromegrass mixture in an intercropping system for livestock

    Yolcu, Halil; Turan, Metin

The effects of various fertilization and seeding patterns on trace mineral contents of lucerne-smooth bromegrass mixture were evaluated for animal feeding. The lucerne and smooth bromegrass mixtures were established with different seeding pattern (mixed, alternative and cross-seeding), N fertilizer rates (0, 60 and 120 kg N ha-1) and P fertilizer rates (0, 40, 80 and 120 P2O5 ha-1). Different seeding patterns, N and P fertilization affected the trace mineral contents of the lucerne-smooth bromegrass mixture under the intercropping system. Mn, Cu and Zn content of the mixture varied significantly depending on seeding patterns. However, the seeding patterns had no significant effect on the Fe contents of the mixture. N application decreased the content of Fe and increased the content of Cu, but had no effect on the Mn and Zn content; whereas, P application affected the Mn and Cu contents but had no effect on the contents of Fe and Zn.

Source rock characteristics and hydrocarbon potential of the late cretaceous deposits in the eastern black sea region, NE Turkey

    Saydam, C.; Korkmaz, S.

In this article, source rock characteristics and hydrocarbon potential of the late Cretaceous turbidite sequences in the eastern Black Sea region were investigated. The total average organic carbon (TOC) contents of sequences in Trabzon, Gümüshane, Giresun, and Erzurum are 0.06, 0.18, 0.12, and 0.30 wt%, respectively. In addition, low potential yield (PY), low hydrogen index (HI), and very high oxygen index (OI) values were calculated for these sequences. On the basis of Tmax values, most of sequences are thermally immature, and only some parts are mature and over-mature. Sequences generally contain residual organic matter and lesser amounts of type III kerogen. CPI values higher than 1, n-alkane distributions with high carbon numbers, and type III kerogen content indicate that organic matter has a terrestrial origin. The Pr/Ph ratios calculated as 1.10 and 2.15 for the Mescitli section of the Gümüshane region and the Tortum section of the Erzurum region reveal that the Mescitli section was deposited in a suboxic environment, while the Tortum section was in an oxic environment. According to these data, late Cretaceous sequences show weak source rock characteristics.

Petrochemistry and petrology of I-type granitoids in an arc setting: The composite Torul pluton, Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Siebel, Wolfgang; Şen, Cüneyt; Satir, Muharrem

The Upper Cretaceous Torul pluton, located in the Eastern Pontides, is of sub-alkaline affinity and displays features typical of volcanic arc granitoids. It is a composite pluton consisting of granodiorite, biotite hornblende monzogranite, quartz monzodiorite, quartz monzonite and hornblende biotite monzogranite. The oldest syenogranite (77.9 ± 0.3 Ma) and the youngest quartz diorite form small stocks within the pluton. Samples from the granodiorites, biotite hornblende monzogranites, quartz monzodiorites, quartz monzonites and hornblende biotite monzogranites have SiO2 between 57 and 68 wt% and display high-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous to peraluminous characteristics. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are fractionated Lacn/Lucn = 6.0-14.2) with pronounced negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.59-0.84). Initial εNd(i) values vary between -3.1 and -4.1, initial 87Sr/86 Sr values between 0.7058 and 0.7072, and δ18O values between +4.4 and +7.3‰. The quartz diorites are characterized by relatively high Mg-number of 36-38, low contents of Na2O (2.3-2.5 wt%) and SiO2 (52-55 wt%) and medium-K calc-alkaline, metaluminous composition. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns are relatively flat [(La/Yb)cn = 2.8-3.3; (Tb/Yb)cn = 1.2] and show small negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*= 0.74-0.76). Compared to the other rock types, radiogenic isotope signatures of the quartz diorites show higher 87Sr/ 86Sr (0.7075-0.7079) and lower εNd(i) (-4.5 to -5.3). The syenogranites have high SiO2 (70-74 wt%) and display high-K calc-alkaline, peraluminous characteristics. Their REE patterns are characterized by higher Lacn/Lucn (12.9) and Eu/Eu* (0.76-0.77) values compared to the quartz diorites. Isotopic signatures of these rocks [εNd(i) = -4.0 to -3.3; 87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.7034-0.7060; δ18 O = + 4.9 to + 8.2] are largely similar to the other rock types but differ from that of the quartz diorites. Fractionation of plagioclase, hornblende, pyroxene and Fe'Ti oxides played an important role in the evolution of Torul granitoids. The crystallization temperatures of the melts ranged from 800 to 900°C as determined from zircon and apatite saturation thermometry. All these characteristics, combined with low K2 O/Na2O, low Al2O3/(FeOT + MgO + TiO2), and low (Na2O + K2O)/ (FeOT + MgO + TiO2) ratios suggest an origin through dehydration melting of mafic lower crustal source rocks.

Sizing of a spherical shell as variable thickness under dynamicloads

Asçi, Nurcan; Uysal, Habib; Uzman, Omit; Inan, E; Kiris, A

In this paper, optimization of a spherical shell under various dynamic loads is investigated. The aim of this optimization problem is to minimize the volume of the shell. Design variables are corner thicknesses of each finite element. Constraints are stresses obtained from von Mises stress criterion not to exceed the yield stress in corner nodal points of each finite element at the top and bottom surfaces of shell and thicknesses are restricted not to be less than 2.5 mm. In addition to shell's own weight, the vertical loads with equal intensity are applied at the nodal points on the upper edge of spherical shell, varying with respect to time function P(t). Time varying load vector is considered three different cases such as step, step after ramp and impulse functions. A program is coded with MapleV for optimization of spherical shell and finite element package program ANSYS is used for structural analysis. Obtained results are presented in graphical and tabular form. Finally, concluded remarks are given.

Mid-Cretaceous olistostromal ophiolitic mélange developed in the back-arc basin of the eastern Pontide magmatic arc, northeast Turkey

Eyuboglu, Yener; Bektas, Osman; Pul, Dilek

Geological and geochemical characteristics of the Mid-Cretaceous olistostromal ophiolitic mélange exposed in the southern part of the eastern Pontide magmatic arc indicates that it originally formed during the drifting stage of a back-arc basin (Neotethys). This view conflicts with the popular idea that this ophiolitic mélange represents a typical tectonic mélange or an accretionary prism developed in the fore-arc of the eastern Pontide magmatic arc by northward subduction of Neotethys or Paleotethys during the Cretaceous. This Mid-Cretaceous ophiolitic mélange is composed of the three distinct lithological facies that may reflect a strike-slip cycle - from transtensional to transpressive tectonic regimes - in the deep spreading troughs of pull-apart basins. The lower part of the mélange is represented by redeposited carbonate rocks that occur as an upward thinning and fining sequence. The middle level of the melange comprises basaltic pillow lavas, hyaloclastics, and intercalated pelagic sediments such as radiolarite, mudstone, and red pelagic limestone. The upper part of the mélange is represented by an olistolith-olistostromal facies that includes sandstone, siltstone, marl, and intervening olistoliths and olistostromes - mainly limestone, peridotite-gabbro, and metamorphic blocks derived from the continental shelf and a nearby peridotitic-metamorphic ridge. Trace-element and REE contents of the basaltic rocks belonging to the Mid-Cretaceous ophiolitic mélange show distinct geotectonic settings (IA, WP, MOR) with various enrichment and depletion trends with respect to MORB and chondrite. Moreover, this ophiolitic mélange is overlain by analcime-bearing Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene(?) shoshonitic basalts in the Bayburt-Maden area. These geological and geochemical data imply that mélange formed in the back-arc basin of the eastern Pontide magmatic are.

Different modes of stress transfer in a strike-slip fault zone: An example from the North Anatolian Fault System in Turkey

Bektaş, Osman; Eyüboǧlu, Yener; Maden, Nafiz

The dextral North Anatolian Fault System (NAFS) extends for well over 1000 km from the compressive tectonic domain of eastern Anatolia into the broad and diverse tectonic domain of the western Anatolian, Marmara and Aegean regions. These different tectonic regimes are characterized by a narrow deformation zone in the east and a much broader deformation zone with multiple sub-parallel fault zones in the west. The spatial and temporal distribution of large historical and modern earthquakes (Mw>5) shows two distinctive macro-seismic zones in the eastern and western parts of the NAFS. The eastern macro-seismic zone, between the towns of Erzincan and Bolu, has produced a successive linear earthquake series parallel to the fault system over the last 500 years, suggesting that stress transfer along the fault occurred in a manner of 'Static Coulomb failure stress changes' through the entire elastic crust. In contrast, the western macro-seismic zone of the NAFS, in the Marmara region, has produced successive earthquake pairs on the parallel faults, implying 'dynamic stress changes', involving large-scale flow in the aseismic lower crust and the mantle.

Seismic behaviour of cylindrical elevated tanks with a frame supporting system on various subsoil

    Livaoglu, Ramazan; Dogangun, Adem

The seismic responses of an elevated tank with a frame supporting system on various subsoils are investigated. The finite element method is used for the modelling of the elevated tank and subsoil system. Fixed-base and elastic media assumptions are made for subsoil. The tank fluid has been modelled as lumped masses such as impulsive and convective masses proposed by Housner. An added mass approach is used for fluid-structure interaction by representing both the impulsive mass and the convective mass. For estimating the seismic response of elevated tanks, response spectrum analysis with mode superposition is used. The results obtained from modelling the elevated tanks on a fixed base and on an elastic medium are compared. It has been observed that the seismic response of the elevated tank is altered significantly depending on the properties of the subsoil. The soil-structure interaction especially affects the impulsive modes and lateral displacement of elevated tanks rather than the torsional modes. It is proposed that the coupling effect for perpendicular directions in the axisymmetrical plan geometry should be considered in the seismic design of the elevated tanks.

The magnetic susceptibility of granitic rocks as a proxy for geochemical composition: Example from the Saruhan granitoids, NE Turkey

Aydin, Ali; Ferré, Eric C.; Aslan, Zafer

The magnetic susceptibility of rocks is determined by their bulk chemistry and magnetic mineralogy. In this case study of the Saruhan pluton in Turkey, a detailed survey based on 925 field measurements and 37 whole rock analyses, reveals a strong correlation between magnetic susceptibility and FeOt (R2 = 0.8). Petrographic observations and calculations based on whole-rock major element analyses indicate the presence of magnetite grains. Further calculations show that magnetite accounts for 88% of the magnetic susceptibility. The spatial correlation between FeOtotal and the magnetic susceptibility is particularly spectacular which suggests that Km is a proxy for geochemical differentiation. The zoning pattern of magnetic susceptibility across the pluton is concentric and reverse, with the highest values of magnetic susceptibility in the center. This type of zoning is consistent with a previously proposed petrogenetic model. The comparison of the Saruhan granites with a classic example of paramagnetic granites reveals two contrasted FeOt-Km trends. This suggests that these variations can be a useful tool to distinguish between leucocratic paramagnetic and leucocratic ferrimagnetic granites.

Effect of foundation embedment on seismic behavior of elevated tanks considering fluid-structure-soil interaction

    Livaoglu, R.; Dogangun, A.

This paper investigates the effects of foundation embedment on the seismic behavior of fluid-elevated tank-foundation-soil system with a structural frame supporting the fluid containing tank. Six different soil types defined in the well-known seismic codes were considered. Both the sloshing effects of the fluid and soil-structure interaction of the elevated tanks located on these six different soils were included in the analyses. Fluid-elevated tank-foundation-soil systems were modeled with the finite element (FE) technique. The fluid-structure interaction was taken into account using Lagrangian fluid FE approximation implemented in the general purpose structural analysis computer program, ANSYS. FE model with viscous boundary was used to include elevated tank-foundation-soil interaction effects. The models were analyzed for the foundations with and without embedment. It was found that the tank roof displacements were affected significantly by the embedment in soft soil, however, this effect was smaller for stiff soil types. Except for soft soil types, embedment did not affect the other response parameters, such as sloshing displacement, of the systems considered in this study.

Heavy metals in compostable wastes: A case study in Gümüş hane, Turkey

Nas, S. Serkan; Bayram, Adem; Bulut, V. Numan; Gündoǧdu, Ali

This paper presents a general overview of the current municipal solid waste management in Gümüşhane Province, Turkey. In the study conducted between March 2004 and February 2005, the composting parameters (moisture content, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and pH), organic matter content and the heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, Co) of the green wastes sorted from the mixed municipal solid waste were determined and evaluated. The analytes were determined with a relative standard deviation lower than 6% in all samples. The organic fraction of biological origin made up about 30% of the total amount of the municipal solid waste. Moisture content was 78%, organic matter content was 92.1%, C/N ratio was 21.6/1 and pH was 4.73. Heavy metal concentrations of the green wastes mixed with domestic wastes were found to be higher than the separately collected green wastes. Heavy metal concentrations of the green wastes from the open dump were determined to decrease in the following order: Fe>Mn>Zn>Cr>Cu>Pb>Ni> Cd>Co.

Optimum shape design of shell structures

Uysal, Habib; Gul, Rustem; Uzman, Umit

A finite element-based shape optimization program has been developed for three-dimensional shell structures and the shape optimization of shell structures has been performed. The shape optimization program is implemented by a job control language and a reliable finite element package program, ANSYS, is used for structural analysis. To achieve the shape optimization, different principles such as structural analysis, automatic mesh generation, sensitivity analysis and mathematical programming are inter-related. The objective is to minimize the weight of the shell structure under constraints that are the maximum value of the von Mises stress in each element and the move limit for each design variable. The design sensitivities are calculated using the finite difference method. The search for the final shape of a structure is performed using the linear programming technique. Several examples are provided.

Compositional variations as a result of partial melting and melt-peridotite interaction in an upper mantle section from the Ortaca area, southwestern Turkey

Uysal, Ibrahim; Kaliwoda, Melanie; Karsli, Orhan; Tarkian, Mahmud; Sadiklar, M. Burhan; Ottley, Chris J.

The bulk composition (major and trace elements) and the composition of minerals in peridotites of the Ortaca area, south-western Turkey, have been investigated to understand the processes controlling lithological and compositional variations in the dismembered mantle section, containing clinopyroxene-bearing harzburgite, harzburgite and dunite. The Ortaca peridotites vary from almost fertile clinopyroxene-bearing harzburgite (1.92-2.42 wt% Al2O3, 2.00-2.64% CaO) with a lower Cr# of the spinel phase (<24) to depleted harzburgite and dunite (0.17-1.60% Al2O3, 0.32-1.71% CaO) with a higher Cr# of the spinel phase (31-76). Systematic variations of major and trace elements of whole rocks and mineral phases are related to varying degrees of partial melting (up to 30%). The depleted harzburgite and dunite display LREE-enriched primitive-mantle-normalized patterns, suggesting mantle metasomatism, probably by fluid-bearing melt derived from the subducted slab, due to the melt-rock interaction process, whereas clinopyroxene-bearing harzburgite show HREE-enriched patterns. The Ortaca peridotites have low temperatures of equilibration relative to abyssal peridotites, because of H2O-assisted diffusional equilibration in the suprasubduction zone. They are characterized by oxygen fugacities Δlog FMQ between -1.61 and +0.74. Clearly, the clinopyroxene-bearing harzburgites define an increasing oxygen fugacity with almost constant Cr#, whereas the refractory harzburgite and dunite show a strong positive correlation between oxygen fugacity and Cr#. In view of the different measurements on minerals and whole rocks, and as a result of calculated temperatures and oxygen fugacities, we contend that the peridotites were subsequently affected by percolating hydrous boninitic melt, from which the high-Cr, low-Ti chromitites were formed, surrounded by a dunite envelope. It is likely that such an envelope of dunite resulted from interaction between melt and harzburgite, which caused the local removal of orthopyroxene within the mantle wedge above the suprasubduction zone.
