The relationships between institutionalization and dual commitment: A study on hotel kitchen employees

Evren, Emine Şimşek; Celil Çakıcı, A.

Long-termed continuance of employees in hotel enterprises, especially in kitchen department where standard production is of utmost importance, is critical for organizational success. At this point, how institutionalization, a phenomenon that is usually associated with standardization, effects the organizational commitment (OC) is an important question. Another important question is how commitment to an impressive supervisor such as the chef mediates the relationship between institutionalization and OC in institutionalized hotels where standards become important instead of personal approaches. In this context, the relationship between institutionalization, OC, and commitment to the supervisor (CS), which has not been studied before, has been examined within the framework of hotel businesses. The data were collected with an online survey. The sample consisted of the kitchen staff of a national hotel chain in Turkey. The findings demonstrated that the effects of institutionalization on OC and CS were significant. CS partially mediates the relationship between institutionalization and OC. When considered within the scope of the dimensions, the CS has a partial mediating effect on the relationship between cultural power and all three dimensions of OC (affective, continuance, normative). The effect of formalization and professionalization on affective and normative commitment is partially mediated by CS.

Digital Marketing and Digital Marketing Applications in the Asian Tourism Industry

    Polat, Eray

Technology takes the place more and more in human life and directs it. Therefore, it is no longer possible to imagine that marketing, which has a fundamental goal to meet the needs and desires of people, is independent of the technology that has entered such human life. The primary objective of this section is to provide a conceptual framework for digital marketing, which has become increasingly pronounced in recent years. By doing so, the evolution of the marketing mix and digital marketing practices is discussed in particular. The second important objective in this section is to present examples of digital marketing practices carried out by tourism enterprises in Asian countries. When the relevant literature is examined, it can be said that in the context of the Asian tourism industry, this area is left under-researched. In this context, secondary data, generated from the existing literature, were used to collect data. Findings show that digital marketing applications in Asian countries are not yet implemented sufficiently and need to be developed. This issue will be more important for the Y and Z generation tourists who are more deeply related to technology as it is important today.

Comparison of deep learning and regression-based MPPT algorithms in PV systems

Karabi̇Naoğlu, Murat Salim; Çakir, Bekir; Başoğlu, Mustafa Engin; Kazdaloğlu, Abdülvehhab; Güneroğlu, Aziz

Solar energy systems (SES) and photovoltaic (PV) modules should be operated at the maximum power point (MPP) to achieve the highest efficiency in the energy generation processes. Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) applications using conventional methods may not be able to follow the global MPP (GMPP) of the PV system under changing atmospheric conditions and they could oscillate around the local MPP. In this study, a machine learning and deep learning (DL) based long short-term memory (LSTM) model is proposed as an innovative solution for MPPT. Contrary to the traditional MPPT applications using current and voltage sensors, the output resistance of the PV module estimation was made by using environmental parameters (such as temperature and radiation) and artificial intelligence algorithms in this study. The LSTM model was compared with artificial neural networks (ANN) and regression methods regarding mean square error (MSE), root mean square error(RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) parameters. It has been determined that the LSTM model has a better performance and could more successfully follow MPP compared to the other methods. Finally, after the comparison with the ANN method, it is proved that LSTM gives 37%, 21%, and 31% more successful MSE, RMSE, and MAE results, respectively.

    Öz, Mehmet

This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition and antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) properties of the essential oil subtracted from the oleoresins, which were obtained from the stem of the Picea orientalis naturally grown in Turkey. The essential oil of the resin was obtained through the hydrodistillation method in a Clevenger type device, and it was analyzed with GC-MS/FID. The structure of 74 compounds that were found in the essential oil was elucidated by comparing with literature data and the database in the appliance. Limonene (53.40%), β-pinene (20.74%) and α-pinene (14.51%) were determined to be the major components. The highest class of compounds in resin essential oils was identified as monoterpene hydrocarbons. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil was investigated with the agar well diffusion method against 25 microorganisms, including 13 gram-negative, 7 gram-positive bacteria and 5 yeast-molds. As the results of the analysis, the highest antibacterial activity was recorded against S. typhimurium from gram-negative bacteria with inhibition zone ranging as (13.70±0.10-9.70±0.10 mm) and S. aureus from gram-positive bacteria with inhibition zone ranging as (9.30±0.10-6.80±0.10 mm). Additionally, the highest antifungal activity was obtained against C. albicans from yeast-molds with inhibition zone ranging as (10.10±0.10-6.10±0.10 mm).

CONSUMERS PERCEPTION AND BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION PRODUCTS: THE CASE OF TRADITIONAL PESTIL FROM GUMUSHANE, TURKEY

    Nilgün-Doğan, Üyesi; Adanacıoğlu, Hakan

The main objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the level of consumers perception of products with geographical indication (GI) and their consumption of products with GI labels. Geographically indicated products were examined within the scope of Gumushane fruit pulp (mulberry pestil), which was registered as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in 2004. This research conducted an online survey of 166 consumers living in Gumushane province in Turkey. Data was obtained from the online surveys that were conducted between June and September 2020. Binary logistic regression analysis method was used to identify the factors affecting the probability of consuming products with GI labels. The model results show that middle-aged, married, and middle-income and consumers who correctly perceive the concept of geographical indication products are more likely to consume products with GI labels. According to the logistic regression results, the increase in consumers level of correct perception of the product notion with GI label increases the probability of consuming products with GI label 2.5 times. The results of this study also tell us that the market share of these products can be increased by improving the consumer perception towards geographically indicated products. Policymakers can also take advantage of these insights to improve lucid understanding of how labels are actually interpreted by consumers.

The role of household demographic factors in shaping transportation spending in Turkey

Coruh, Emine; Urak, Faruk; Bilgic, Abdulbaki; Yen, Steven T.

Factors at the family scale, for which dynamic decisions and proper investments need to be made at the national level in curbing greenhouse gas emissions, are extremely important for policymakers and investors. We provide information on the roles of how household demographic factors shape transportation patterns and spending in Turkey using the latest survey data collected by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI). Alternative sample selection models are estimated to accommodate censoring in expenditure, and the dependent single-hurdle model is found to be the preferred model as a result of model specification tests. Also, different specification tests conducted, including the error-independence test, resulted in rejection of the null hypothesis. Results suggest that the majority of the household economic and sociodemographic characteristics are important determinants of both the probability and level of transportation expenditure. Policy recommendations to curb carbon emissions and integrate environmentally friendly transport systems throughout the country are presented.

The image of nursing among nursing and other healthcare professional university students: A mixed-method study

Apaydin Cirik, Vildan; Gül, Uğur; Aksoy, Bahar

Aim: This study had three objectives: (1) determining the image of nursing in the eyes of undergraduate health sciences students; (2) identifying factors affecting that image; and (3) evaluating students’ views and experiences regarding that image. Background: If healthcare students perceive nursing positively, it may result in directing future generations to nursing, and improving nursing, and reducing the need for nurses. Design: This study adopted an explanatory sequential design with participant selection variant. The design involved data collection in two consecutive phases. Methods: A mixed-method design using quantitative data and qualitative interviews was used. In the quantitative phase, a descriptive and cross-sectional research method was used. The qualitative phase was based on phenomenological research. The quantitative portion was performed with 1556 participants in their second, third or fourth year during the 2019–2020 academic year. Students were from the nursing, emergency and disaster management, nutrition and dietetics, occupational health and safety, health management, and social work departments. The qualitative portion was performed with 29 participant volunteers. Participants were interviewed on the phone. The data were collected using an introductory information form, a nursing image scale, and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the independent-samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, one-way ANOVA, and stepwise linear regression. The quantitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: There were significant relationships between participants' nursing image scale total scores and their department (p < 0.001), education year (p = 0.014), age (p = 0.032) and desire to recommend the nursing profession (p < 0.001). Nursing image scale total score was significantly higher in nursing departments than in other departments. Second-year participants and 18–20-year-olds had higher total scores than fourth-year participants and 21–23-year-olds, respectively, and those who would recommend the nursing profession had higher total scores than those who would not recommend it (p < 0.05). Analysis of the qualitative data produced six main themes: perceptions of the nursing profession, perceived nursing figure, nurse knowledge, relationship with healthcare professionals, reason for preference and job gender. Conclusion: This study employed a mixed-method design involving both quantitative and qualitative stages. The results highlighted the image of nursing and its significance in the eyes of prospective healthcare professionals. Detecting nursing image early can increase professional training and improve the professional image of nursing. We should take into account the factors that negatively affect the image of nursing to plan nursing education better in the future.

Analysis and assessment of daily and seasonal photovoltaic heat island effect on Sekbandemirli rural region by local weather data records; [YEREL METEOROLOJIK VERI KAYITLARI ILE SEKBANDEMIRLI KIRSAL BÖLGESINDE GÜNLÜK VE MEVSIMSEL FOTOVOLTAIK ISI ADASININ INCELENMESI VE DEǦERLENDIRILMESI]

Demirezen, Emre; Ozden, Talat; Akinoglu, Bulent G.

Photovoltaic Power Plants have a considerable share among solar energy conversion technologies toward environmentally sustainable and economically feasible electricity production. However, when a rural region's land surface formed by natural soil types is covered by a Photovoltaic Power Plant (PVPP)'s dark-colored solar modules in large numbers, an artificial albedo (reflectivity) change is expected on that surface. Because of the heat exchange between these modules and the air surrounding them due to albedo alteration, the region's natural weather conditions may experience Photovoltaic Heat Island Effect (PVHIE) as a result of external and time-dependent air temperature oscillations caused by the warming-cooling cycles of solar modules. To observe and analyze a possible PVHIE trend, it has been conducting a field study project since October 2017 for a PVPP near the Sekbandemirli rural region in the Kutahya city of Turkey. The weather data, including air temperature and wind (direction and speed) at every 10-minute and hourly intervals, are collected by the three weather monitoring stations installed at the specific locations inside and outside the PVPP field. The plant's hourly average power output and module temperature data can also be monitored. After conducting statistical, correlational, and graphical analyses, the results show some temporal PVHI formations at the PVPP field center daily and on a seasonal basis. The plant center's air temperature tends to be warmer (up to the 6°C difference) during daytimes and colder (up to the (-3)°C difference) during nighttimes.

Hexarotor Yaw Flight Control with SPSA, PID Algorithm and Morphing

    Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul

In recent years, the interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has increased. They have penetrated into all areas of life. However, studies on UAV control have been a frequently discussed topic by researchers. In this study, a hexarotor in which yaw flight is tried to be controlled by changing the arm lengths during flight (morphing) is discussed. The hexarotor mathematical model is linearly derived using Newton's equations of motion. The equations of motion are modeled using the state space model approach. Hexarotor has been drawn in Solidworks program in accordance with the reality of all morphing states. Morphing estimation and accordingly proportional-integral-derivative (PID) coefficients were estimated using Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA). SPSA was preferred because it converged to the optimum result faster than similar algorithms. Hexarotor simulations were performed in Matlab/Simulink environment. Hexarotor yaw flight stability was achieved by minimizing the SPSA generated cost function based on design performance criteria. The cost function converged in 3-4 iterations and approached the optimum result. Accordingly, the design performance criteria have also improved and successfully followed the given trajectory.

Creating Loyal Customers with Digital Marketing Applications: The 5A Model

    Polat, Eray

As a result of the effects of the digital revolution, it became very difficult for brands to attract the attention of consumers, to sustain this, and to eventually turn them into loyal customers. In this context, the primary purpose of the chapter is to examine how the brand-customer interaction is realized in the way of creating loyal customers with digital marketing activities. The secondary important goal in this section is to provide examples of digital marketing practices carried out by tourism companies in Asian countries to create loyal customers. Also in this section, which subcultures are more important in terms of digital marketing and what are the basic skills that businesses should have in building loyalty in the digital age. When the relevant literature is examined, it can be said that in the context of the Asian tourism industry, this area is left under-researched. In this context, secondary data, generated from the existing literature, were used to collect data. According to the results obtained, Kotler, Kartajaya, and Setiawan (2017)’s 5A (Awareness, Appeal, Ask, Act and Advocacy) model, developed instead of the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire and Action) model, consisting of aware, appeal, ask, act, and advocacy stages can be proposed as an important model that can integrate the developments in the digital age into brand-customer interaction. While the subcultures that businesses should focus more on attaining loyal customers are youths, women, and Internet citizens (netizens), the basic skills that businesses should have can be expressed as automation, proactive personalization, contextual interaction, and innovation. It is observed that the activities carried out by the tourism companies in Asian countries to create a loyal customer base are concentrated on the loyalty programs in general. It can be said that these programs, which bring various monetary rewards to users, are also integrated with digital technologies. Besides, it has been observed that businesses concentrate more on aware and appeal stages. However, to obtain a loyal customer group more easily in the digital age, businesses need to carry out activities that may attract the attention of consumers during the ask, act, and advocacy stages.

Highly siderophile element and Os isotope systematics of the Cenozoic volcanic rocks from the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: Constraints on the origin and evolution of subcontinental mantle-derived magmas

Arslan, Mehmet; Temizel, İrfan; Ackerman, Lukáš; Yücel, Cem; Yazar, Emel Abdioğlu

The Cenozoic subalkaline to alkaline volcanic rocks from the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt (EPOB) in NE Turkey exhibit wide range of highly siderophile element (HSE) contents and Os isotope compositions that can be related to their mantle sources and parental melt evolution. Although some Eocene rocks show signs of late-stage modification, most of the studied volcanic rocks possess primary HSE and Os systematics. The Eocene volcanic rocks have largely variable PdN/IrN (~0.25–751), PdN/PtN (~0.25–87) and (187Os/188Os)i ratios (~0.113 to 0.51). The Miocene volcanic rocks have high PdN/IrN (~2.6–441), low PdN/PtN (~0.11–1.7) and radiogenic (187Os/188Os)i ratios ranging from ~0.166 to 0.52 while the Mio-Pliocene volcanic rocks show high PdN/IrN of ~7.2–29, low PdN/PtN (~1.2–2.7), and only mildly radiogenic (187Os/188Os)i values between ~0.132 and 0.177. Finally, the Quaternary volcanic rocks have low PdN/IrN (~2.3–3.6), PdN/PtN (~0.9–1.6) and radiogenic (187Os/188Os)i values ranging from ~0.133 to 0.194. Overall, the primitive mantle-normalized HSE patterns of the studied volcanic rocks are characterized by PPGE (Pt, Pd) and Re enrichment with respect to IPGE (Os, Ir, Ru). The variations in HSE and radiogenic Os isotope compositions of the relatively differentiated volcanic rocks indicate that crustal assimilation played active role in their parental melt evolution, especially in the Eocene and Miocene period. Besides, the obtained HSE data also suggest that the parental magmas of all the studied volcanic rocks were generated mainly in the S-saturated conditions. The temporal and spatial HSE and Os isotope variations observed in the studied Cenozoic volcanic rocks reflect the heterogeneity of the mantle source beneath the EPOB, which could be attributed to variations in response of different fluid/melt metasomatism of the underlying SCLM.

An Investigation of the Antiproliferative Effect of Rhododendron luteum Extract on Cervical Cancer (HeLa) Cells via Nrf2 Signaling Pathway

Turan, Ibrahim; Demir, Selim; Yaman, Serap Ozer; Canbolat, Deniz; Mentese, Ahmet; Aliyazicioglu, Yuksel

The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of Rhododendron luteum extract (RLE) in the induction of Nrf2‑related oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in human cervical cancer (HeLa) cells. The antiproliferative effect of RLE on HeLa and fibroblast cells was determined using the MTT assay. The effects of RLE on the cell cycle, apoptosis, and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HeLa cells were evaluated using fluorescent probes. The mRNA expression levels of Nrf2 [and its targets glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC), and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD)], and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP, an ER stress marker were determined using reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results demonstrated that RLE exhibited a selective cytotoxic effect (2.9-fold) on HeLa cells compared to fibroblast cells. RLE arrested the cell cycle at the S phase, and induced apoptosis, ER stress, and ROS formation. In addition, RLE significantly suppressed the expression levels of Nrf2, GCLC and G6PD (0.65, 0.69, and 0.54-fold, respectively) and increased the expression of CHOP (4.48-fold) in HeLa cells at 72 h of treatment (p < 0.05). These results show that the antiproliferative effect of RLE occurs through the Nrf2 and ER stress pathways, and the results should now be supported by further in vivo studies.

The relationship between banks’ credit quality, credit growth and social capital: evidence from Turkish banking sector

    Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip; Ayaydin, Hasan

The aim of this study is to empirically examine the relationship between credit growth, credit quality and social capital of all commercial banks operating in Turkey for a period of twelve years between 2007 and 2018 on the basis of 81 provinces. In order to measure social capital on a provincial basis, the independent variable SC1 was obtained by applying principal component analysis to the variables consisting of 2 network and 2 norm variables. In addition, province-based organ donation rate was used as an alternative social capital variable. Changes in Total Loans (ΔTL), Changes in Real Estate Loans (ΔREL), Changes in Commercial and Industrial Loans (ΔCIL), Changes in Construction Loans (ΔCL), Changes in Non-Performing Loans (ΔNPL), Ratio of Non-Performing Loans to Total Loans (NPL/TL) and Ratio of Non-Performing Loans to Total Assets (NPL/TA) were determined as the dependent variable. The relationship between the level of social capital (SC1) and seven dependent variables on a provincial basis in Turkey was analyzed and measured using panel data techniques. The results of the analysis show that the relationship between the social capital level of the provinces, credit growth and non-performing loans are negative and significant. The results of the study show that the level of social capital is important and decisive in terms of credit growth and credit risk of banks.

Performance evaluation of privatized ports by entropy based TOPSIS and ARAS approach

    Gök-Kısa, A. Cansu; Çeli̇k, Pelin; Peker, İskender

Purpose: Ports are the key elements of maritime transportation, which is crucial for world trade. Approximately 180 port facilities are located in Turkey. After 2007, 5 of the ports, which are formerly owned by Turkish Republic Railways Administration (TRRA), are privatized. The aim of the study is to evaluate the performance of these privatized ports by multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach. Design/methodology/approach: The application process is performed by a MCDM model. This model includes both criteria (dry bulk, liquid bulk, general cargo, container, RO-RO capacity, total port area, total berth, total berths length and depth) and alternatives (Mersin, Samsun, Bandirma, Iskenderun and Derince Ports). It determines the weights of the criteria by entropy and ranks the alternatives by ARAS and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methods. Findings: The results of entropy, ARAS and TOPSIS methods are compared. According to these results, “container” is the most important criteria while Mersin port has the best performance. Originality/value: In the literature, most of the studies about this subject were analyzed by data envelopment analysis (DEA) and there are no studies had been taken into consideration ports that are owned by TRRA, in Turkey. Moreover, few of these studies used integrated MCDM models, and this is the first study that integrates entropy, ARAS and TOPSIS methods in this field.

Detection of damaged buildings after an earthquake with convolutional neural networks in conjunction with image segmentation

    Ünlü, Ramazan; Kiriş, Recep

Detecting damaged buildings after an earthquake as quickly as possible is important for emergency teams to reach these buildings and save the lives of many people. Today, damaged buildings after the earthquake are carried out by the survivors contacting the authorities or using some air vehicles such as helicopters. In this study, AI-based systems were tested to detect damaged or destroyed buildings by integrating into street camera systems after unexpected disasters. For this purpose, we have used VGG-16, VGG-19, and NASNet convolutional neural network models which are often used for image recognition problems in the literature to detect damaged buildings. In order to effectively implement these models, we have first segmented all the images with the K-means clustering algorithm. Thereafter, for the first phase of this study, segmented images labeled “damaged buildings” and “normal” were classified and the VGG-19 model was the most successful model with a 90% accuracy in the test set. Besides, as the second phase of the study, we have created a multiclass classification problem by labeling segmented images as “damaged buildings,” “less damaged buildings,” and “normal.” The same three architectures are used to achieve the most accurate classification results on the test set. VGG-19 and VGG-16, and NASNet have achieved considerable success in the test set with about 70%, 67%, and 62% accuracy, respectively.

The effect of tourism and legalization policies on summer pasture in Turkey

    Döner, Fatih

In Turkey, according to Pasture Law, land allocated for farmers to spend the summer with their animals, graze their animals and benefit from grass is defined as “summer pasture (yaylak in Turkish).” Summer pasture is of national importance for its biodiversity, landscape, cultural heritage and transhumance. However, especially after 1990s, the summer pasture areas have been extensively used in tourism activities in Turkey. By changing land use, the increasing tourism activities combined with legal uncertainties and the legalization policies have caused summer pasture areas transferred into built-up areas. The effect of the tourism and legalization policies on the land use changes in summer pasture areas was evaluated in this study. It was determined that Turkey's tourism and legalization policies have adverse effect on sustainable use of summer pasture areas. These policies aimed at economic development and solving property problems of rural areas caused new legal problems and expansion of built-up areas. A better land use policy and an effective control mechanism are necessary for the sustainable use of summer pasture areas.

Hidden Diversity in a Narrow Valley: Description of New Endemic Palearctic Rock Lizard Darevskia (Squamata: Lacertidae) Species from Northeastern Turkey

Kurnaz, Muammer; Şahin, Mehmet Kürşat; Eroğlu, Ali İhsan

Darevskia is a particularly species-rich radiation of Palearctic rock lizards from the Caucasus region. Thanks to intense systematic and taxonomic research, the knowledge of species-level diversity within this genus has increased over the last quarter century. Here, we described a new species, Darevskia salihae sp. nov. from northeastern Turkey. The new taxon is differentiated from other nearby taxon by the low number of dorsal scales in the middle of the body, the shorter body length, and the absence of blue dots both on the lateral region above the forelimbs and on the margin of the ventral plates. In addition to their morphological differences, the new taxon is phylogenetically different from close groups. It is located in a separate subclade from the rudis-valentini-portschinskii subclade. This distinction is supported by both a high bootstrap value (100) and a high posterior probability value (1.00). These two subclades are separated from each other by a genetic distance of almost 4%. This separation is supported not only genetically and morphologically, but also geographically. Since the habitat of the new taxon is limited to a high mountain and a narrow valley, it does not provide an opportunity for a different Darevskia species to shelter because it creates geographical isolation. However, Darevskia parvula that live closest to the habitat of the new taxon live only at the habitat boundaries and do not enter areas where the new taxon is found. Therefore, it might be possible that while it was separated from the rudis-valentini-portschinskii group during the evolutionary transformation, it remained as a refuge and relict in a narrow area as a result of the collapse of the valleys and the partial uplift of the Kaçkar Mountains.
