- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ4Non-destructive detection of sesame oil adulteration by portable FTNIR, FT-MIR, and Raman spectrometers combined with chemometrics
Menevseoglu, Ahmed
Edible oils are often adulterated with fixed oils because of their high quality and price. Sesame oil is prone to adulteration due to its high commodity value and popularity. Therefore, a rapid, simple, and non-invasive method to detect adulteration in sesame oil is necessary for quality control purposes. Handheld and portable FT-NIR, FT-MIR, and Raman spectrometers are easy to operate, non-destructive, rapid, and easy to transport for in-situ assessments as well as being cheaper alternatives to traditional instruments. This study aimed to evaluate three different vibrational spectroscopic techniques in detecting sesame oil adulteration with sunflower and canola oil. Sesame oils were adulterated with fixed oils at different concentrations (0 – 25%) (w/w). Spectra were collected with portable devices and analyzed using Soft Independent Modelling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) to generate a classification model to authenticate pure sesame oil and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) to predict the levels of the adulterant. For confirmation, the fatty acid profile of the oils was determined by gas chromatography (GC). In all three instruments, SIMCA provided distinct clusters for pure sesame oils and adulterated samples with interclass distance (ICD) over 3. Furthermore, FT-NIR and FT-MIR showed excellent performance in predicting adulterant levels with rval>0.96. Specifically, the FT-MIR unit provided more precise classification and PLSR prediction models over FT-NIR and Raman units. Still, all the units can be used as an alternative method to traditional methods such as GC, GC-MS, etc. These units showed great potential for in-situ surveillance to detect sesame oil adulterations.

The intense pressure resulting from population growth and urbanization along with technology has created the need for utilizing natural areas for tourism and recreational purposes and has necessitated the protection, development, and planning of natural resources for people to benefit from. Due to the importance of determining temporal changes within the framework of the protection-use balance, this study examined the changes occurring within the recreational areas of the Uludağ National Park between the years 1970 and 2010 from human use. As a result of the recreational facilities offered to visitors, an average of 550 000 people benefits annually from the area, which was designated as a national park in 1961. The study included the camping and picnic sites of Sarıalan, Çobankaya, Kirazlıyayla, and Karabelen situated within the park and the ski site of the first development zone. High-resolution satellite images and aerial photographs of the areas at different dates were employed. The temporal changes in the selected areas were analyzed by digital image processing with the help of the geographic information system. Upon examining the impact of the recreational use changes occurring on the land cover, it was revealed that building areas had increased by 15 ha (2.57%), road areas by 21 ha (7.89%), and bare land areas by 67 ha (.53%), while the meadowland areas had decreased by 223 ha (119.37%). The forested areas had increased by 78 ha (48.93%), woodland areas by 79 ha (59.37%) and were not adversely affected, mainly due to the protection status of the park.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of characterization and tribological behavior of composite oxide coatings doped with h-BN and graphite particles on ZA-27 alloy by micro-arc oxidation
Kaplan, Erdar; Sukuroglu, Ebru Emine; Cuvalci, Olkan
This paper investigates the tribological effects of composite oxide coatings grown on ZA-27 surfaces under dry sliding condition. Coating processes were conducted using three different electrolytic solutions through micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method. The base electrolytic solution without any particles as additives was labeled as MAO-Coated, whereas electrolytic solution labeled as Coated-A contained graphite particles and Coated-B contained hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles incorporated into base solution. The morphology of each coated samples were analyzed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The friction and wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disc tester in order to evaluate the tribological behavior. Results indicated the friction coefficients of both Coated-A and Coated-B samples were lower when compared to that of uncoated ZA-27 alloy. Further comparative studies showed Coated-A samples containing graphite particles resulted in the lowest friction coefficient.

Bekiryazici, Zafer; Merdan, Mehmet; Kesemen, Tulay
In this study, a modification of the random differential transformation method is given by using Laplace-Padé method. The modification, which has previously been introduced for the deterministic differential transformation method (DTM), is used to obtain improved approximate expected values, variances, and confidence intervals for systems of random differential equations. Comparison of approximate results obtained from the random differential transformation method and the modified method are given to underline the improvement of the approximations. Epidemiological compartmental models of type SIR and SIIR are used to implement the modified method and demonstrate its advantages. Simulations and deterministic counterparts of the models are also investigated to confirm the suitability of the results of the approximations.

Ünlü, Ramazan
Manual quality control may result in delayed detection of a system defect, or none at all, potentially resulting in malfunctions that can lead to disruption of the system, incur extra costs, or complete downtime of the system. To mitigate such issues, more advanced statistics and machine learning-based systems such as SVM, WSVM, etc. are used to automatically detect error signals during the process. However, these methodologies are not developed for sequential dataset such as a classical CCPR dataset. As a result, in this study, we have implemented a preliminary Cost-Oriented Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM), which is designed to learn from a sequential dataset and compare it with SVM and WSVM which are traditional methods utilized in the field. Additionally, we compared the performance of methods in terms of early detection of an abnormal pattern. Based on the findings, the Cost-Oriented LSTM method outperforms SVM and WSVM in the majority of abnormal patterns in terms of both classification and early detection performance. Global accuracy score which is the average of accuracy rates in all combination of abnormal parameters and window lengths shows that LSTM gives a better accuracy score than SVM and WSVM in all seven abnormal patterns detection.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ3Flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination of total chromium and cadmium in bean samples after ultrasonic-assisted microextraction using ionic liquid Aliquat-336
Elik, Adil; Karakoy, Tolga; Çilesiz, Yeter; Altunay, Nail
A new and rapid microextraction approach termed as ultrasonic-assisted ionic liquid-based microextraction (UA-ILME) was developed using ionic liquid Aliquat-336 as extraction solvent for the extraction of chromium and cadmium in bean samples collected from different regions in Turkey. The total amounts of analytes in the samples were measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The basis of the extraction step is based on the complexation of Cr(III) and Cd(II) with diethyldithiocarbamate at pH 4.0. The hydrophobic ternary complexes containing analytes were then rapidly extracted from the sample solution to the ionic phase under the ultrasonic effect using tricaprylylmethylammonium chloride (Aliquat-336). Some experimental variables (pH, ligand amount, extraction solvent volume, ultrasound time, extraction temperature and sample volume) were optimized in detail. Following the optimization steps, the limits of detection (LODs, 3Sblank/m) for Cr(III) and Cd(II) were calculated as 0.45 ng mL−1 with linear range of 1.5–380 ng mL−1 and 0.25 ng mL−1 with linear range of 0.8–220 ng mL−1, respectively. Enrichment factors and average recoveries were ranged from 125.8–96.4 to 92.7–106.5%, respectively. The accuracy and precision of the method were validated by analyzing a certified reference material and spiked recovery tests. The UA-ILME method was successfully applied to the determination of Cd and Cr in the samples, highlighting that the matrix ions under consideration do not affect the extraction and determination steps.

Mızrak, Sefa; Özdemir, Ahmet; Aslan, Ramazan
Worldwide studies show that gender is an important variable affecting disaster risk perception and that women have high levels of disaster risk perception. The objective of this study is to investigate women’s earthquake risk perception as well as the factors that may help predict it. The data of the study were collected from 463 women living in Kocaeli (Turkey) by survey method. The study, which employed ordinary logistic regression analysis, analysed whether the same dependent variable was predicted by different independent variables in five models. Many of the women who participated in the research reported that they were more sensitive to earthquakes. The items with the highest mean among women's affective and cognitive risk perception factors are the items that measure fear and financial perception, respectively. Education and age significantly help predict women’s earthquake risk perception. Living in dread of earthquakes and being depressed and worried for future generations make women feel more sensitive. This study has showed that all the underlying factors affecting women's disaster risk perception should be understood more deeply. It is thought that the results of the study will contribute to studies related to disaster management, risk perception, and women.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Analysis of relationships between nanotechnology applications, mineral saving and ecological footprint: Evidence from panel fourier cointegration and causality tests
Koç, Pınar; Gülmez, Ahmet
Analyzing the relationship between nanotechnology applications, mineral saving, and environmental degradation is important to achieve sustainable development goals. However, in the literature, no study empirically examines the interaction among nanotechnology applications, mineral saving, and environmental degradation. This study addresses this significant gap in the literature by investigating the impacts of nanotechnology applications on mineral saving and the ecological footprint in 9 countries (Australia, Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea, Russia, Sweden, and the USA) in the period 1990–2017 using the combined panel fourier fractional cointegration and panel fractional fourier causality test. According to the causality test results based on group statistics, there is a Granger causality from nanotechnology applications to mineral saving. Also, there is causality from mineral saving to ecological footprint. The estimations of the causality based on individual statistics show no causality linkage between nanotechnology applications and mineral saving in the countries, excluding Australia and France. Canada, China, France, and Sweden are countries with unilateral causality from nanotechnology applications to ecological footprint. In the other countries, except China, Japan, and the USA, mineral saving doesn't Granger cause ecological footprint. The long-run findings show a positive impact of nanotechnology applications on mineral saving and ecological footprint. These findings are valid for all countries. In this context, it can be concluded that nanotechnology applications are essential for resource-saving. But, to save resources, the authorities should focus on controlling and measuring nanoparticle emissions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ2The relationship between anxiety levels and anger expression styles of nurses during COVID-19 pandemic
Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Uzun, Sevda; Kulakaç, Nurşen
Objective: This study was carried out in a cross-sectional and correlational design to explore the relationship between anxiety levels and anger expression styles of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The sample of this cross-sectional and correlational type of study consisted of 618 nurses calculated with the snowball sampling method. The data were collected using a questionnaire developed by the researchers, the state anxiety inventory, and the trait anger and anger expression scale and was conducted between May 10 and 20, 2020 using an online questionnaire form. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, the Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. Results: The mean age of nurses was 34.98 ± 8.36 years (min: 20; max: 53), 87.4% were women, and 81.7% experienced a high level of anxiety. The anger scores of the participants were found to be 20.04 ± 4.43, the anger-in score was 15.55 ± 3.34, the anger-out score was 14.01 ± 2.87, and the anger control score was 22.93 ± 3.6. Being married, the presence of chronic disease, living in the Marmara region, working shifts, presence of an individual over 65 years of age at home, and having a COVID-19 test were found to be risk factors that significantly increase nurses' anxieties. A significant positive relationship was found between the anxiety scores, trait anger (r = 0.249, p = 0.000), anger-in (r = 0.174, p = 0.000) and anger-out (r = 0.205, p = 0.000) scores of nurses, and a significant negative relationship was found between the anxiety scores and anger control (r = 0.249, p = 0.000) score. Conclusion: The study revealed that in the COVID-19 pandemic the anxiety levels of the nurses were high and that the high anxiety level negatively affected the style of anger expression, but the nurses were successful in maintaining anger control. In line with these results, it is important that nurses develop effective coping strategies to reduce their anxiety levels and that they receive increased levels of support in managing anger expression.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ1Static resistance of axially loaded multiplanar gap KK-joints of Circular Hollow sections at elevated temperatures
Wang, Y.C.; Ozyurt, E.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation of the behaviour, and proposes a method to calculate the static resistance of axially loaded Circular Hollow Section Double K-joints (DKK) at elevated temperatures. This type of joints is widely used in building construction, but currently, there is no method to calculate their static resistance at elevated temperatures. The numerical investigations of this paper cover a wide range of design parameters, including brace axial load combination, joint temperature, angles between brace members, longitudinal and transverse gap sizes, chord diameter to thickness ratio and brace diameter to chord diameter ratio. The results of this paper indicate that the ratio of joint elevated temperature resistance to ambient temperature resistance may be lower than the reduction factor for the yield strength of steel at elevated temperatures. There are two joint failure modes, one for small and one for large transverse gap. These failure modes and the demarcation between small and large gaps are independent of joint temperature. For joints with large gap, the ratio of joint resistance at elevated temperature to that at ambient temperature is close to the average of steel yield strength and Young's modulus reduction factors at elevated temperature. For joints with small gap, the joint resistance ratio follows the steel Young's modulus factor variation at elevated temperature if all four braces are under compression, but the trend changes to the average ratio of steel Young's modulus and yield strength reduction factors if the axial brace loads are balanced (compression in two brace members equal to tension force in the other two brace members). Linear interpolation can be applied between these two different loading cases.

Şibil, Rahim; Aras, Egemen; Kankal, Murat
This paper presents the results of both experimental and numerical studies on biological wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), oxidation ditches (OD) hydrodynamics to design and develop the desired flow conditions of the WWTP. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were developed using CFD software, ANSYS Fluent (V13) with the three-dimensional, steady, incompressible flow based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations for flow field calculations in the combined ODs. Also, three different turbulence models [standard k–ε (ske), renormalization group k–ε (RNG), and realizable k–ε (real)] were performed for a comparative study. The numerical model was verified based on the experimental data in the relative errors for ske, RNG, and real 13%, 17%, and 18%, respec-tively. According to the parametric studies, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the existing WWTP were investigated. The maximum wastewater velocity occurred at the inlet and outlet, affecting the flow field in ODs. Moreover, the water velocity decreased as it moved away from the inlet and outlet locations at vertical and horizontal. It can also be noted that there was no homogeneous flow field distribution in ODs. Because the current OD model needs improvement hydrodynamically, a new original OD geometry was presented to eliminate the hydraulic weakness of existing WWTP by CFD analysis. The new original geometry provides a more homogeneous flow field in ODs that mean it will also help treatment efficiency and energy saving according to the operating principles of this facility.

Agostini, P.; Aksakal, H.; Alekhin, S.; Allport, P. P.; Andari, N.; Andre, K. D. J.; Angal-Kalinin, D.; Antusch, S.; Aperio Bella, L.; Apolinario, L.
The Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC's conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics by extending the accessible kinematic range of lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to its enhanced luminosity and large energy and the cleanliness of the final hadronic states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, this report contains a detailed updated design for the energy-recovery electron linac (ERL), including a new lattice, magnet and superconducting radio-frequency technology, and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described, and the lower-energy, high-current, three-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented, which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution, and calibration goals that arise from the Higgs and parton-density-function physics programmes. This paper also presents novel results for the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron (FCC-eh) mode, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

Introduction The major salivary glands can be stimulated by chewing gum to increase saliva flow and decrease xerostomia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of chewing gum on dry mouth, interdialytic weight gain, and intradialytic symptoms in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods This prospective randomized controlled single-blind study was conducted with patients who had been treated for at least 6 months with sessions 3 days a week for 4 hours at two HD units. Patients were randomly allocated to chewing gum group or the control group. In the chewing gum group, gum was chewed for 10 minutes six times a day, and when the patients felt mouth dryness or were thirsty. In the nonchewing gum group, gum was not chewed. The patients were followed-up for 3 months. A total of three saliva samples were taken before starting treatment at the first, 12th, and 36th HD session. Data were collected with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Hemodialysis Patients Fluid Control Scale, Dialysis Symptom Index, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale at baseline, week 4, week 8, and week 12. Findings The study was completed with a total of 44 patients consisting of 22 patients in the each group. The second and third month VAS values (xerostomia) of the patients in the chewing gum groups were statistically significantly lower than those in the control group (P= 0.014,P < 0.001, respectively). The third month salivary flow rate in the chewing gum group was higher than the values in the control group patients (P < 0.001). Discussion It is anticipated that this study will raise nurses' awareness of dry mouth and encourage future studies on interventions to increase the salivary flow rate to prevent or treat dry mouth.
