- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ4Detection of pneumonia from pediatric chest X-ray images by transfer learning
Demir, Yasin; Bingöl, Özkan
When pathogens such as viruses, bacteria and fungi attack the lungs, the alveoli fill with inflamed fluid, causing pneumonia. Early diagnosis of this disease, which has fatal outcomes especially in children under 5 years old, is very important in controlling undesirable situations. Chest X-ray images play an important role in the diagnosis of pneumonia. In addition, the fact that the amount of radiation is lower than imaging devices such as tomography and the possibility of being accessible even from rural areas creates an advantage for X-ray devices. However, X-ray images that are not always clear or human conditions such as fatigue and lack of attention can make it difficult for specialists to detect pneumonia. In this study, a transfer learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) approach is proposed, which can help specialists in the early and accurate diagnosis of pneumonia in children and, classify healthy and diseased individuals through Chest X-ray images. As a result of the study, an original CNN was proposed by adding additional layers to the AlexNet architecture layers and a test accuracy of 96.31% was obtained. - MakaleYalnız künye2023Institutional Quality and Unemployment in OECD Nations: A Panel Causality Test Using a Fourier Function
Cicen, Yildirim Beyazit
A significant impact of institutional quality on sustainable growth has been revealed in recent studies. This study aims to examine the relationship between different institutions and their unemployment rates, considering the legal system and property rights index. A novel and robust panel Fourier causality test was conducted to investigate 38 OECD nations for the relationship between their institutional quality and unemployment rates between the years 2000 and 2018. Regardless of stationarity, the adopted method allowed for the endogenous identification of structures, locations, and forms, and the evaluation of causal relationships. In addition, the Fourier method and the trigonometric terms were used for analyzing the structural changes. According to the findings, a unidirectional causal relationship existed between the quality of the legal system and property rights and the unemployment rates in the investigated nations during the relevant period. In addition, bidirectional causality existed between the variables in Germany and the United States. It is therefore recommended to necessarily improve a nation’s institutional structure to reduce its unemployment rate. Low unemployment rates would be achieved by improving institutional quality, particularly in developing nations. Therefore, policymakers must focus on formulating policies to reduce unemployment in the long run, considering the legal system and property rights of the nation.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ3Exploring managerial insights through multi criteria decision making techniques in pharmacy inventory classification problem
Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır; Göktekin, Zekiye; Geliç, Büşra
The current research addresses the inventory classification problem of community pharmacies, which have a dual role as both a vital component of the pharmaceutical supply chain and a typical retail store. Despite the existing literature indicating that pharmacists may lack knowledge on inventory management, it seems that the MCIC literature is weak in explaining how pharmacists can benefit from MCDA techniques in all aspects. To bridge this gap, the study aims to demonstrate that pharmacists can utilize MCDA techniques to gain deeper insights beyond mere classification in the context of inventory management. Real-world data from a community pharmacy in Turkey was classified using the EDAS method. Sensitivity analysis was performed for MCDA inputs, about which pharmacists may lack information. Scenario findings based on criterion weights and threshold values offer important managerial implications for pharmacists. This study provides a critical contribution to the literature on inventory management in community pharmacies by highlighting the potential of MCDA techniques to support decision-making beyond mere classification. The sensitivity analysis also sheds light on areas where pharmacists may lack knowledge and suggests ways to address these gaps. Overall, the study underscores the need for pharmacists to have a deeper understanding of inventory management and highlights the potential benefits of MCDA techniques in addressing this challenge.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ4The Effect of Different Physical Education Class Hours Applied in Secondary Education on Certain Physiological and Physical Parameters
Sever, Mehmet Onur; Söyler, Mehmet; Çingöz, Yunus Emre; Barkin, Emrah
This study investigates the effects of different physical education lesson hours applied to secondary school students on some physical and physiological parameters. A total of 36 secondary school students voluntarily participated in the study: respectively, 18 from Group 1 and 18 from Group 2 (age: 14.94±0.41 / 14±0.34 years; height: 175.22±7.62 / 169.33±6.95 cm; weight: 61.95±9.07 / 56.83±6.33 kg). While Group 1 students received 8 hours of physical education lessons per week, Group 2 students were given 2 hours of physical education lessons according to the Ministry of National Education curriculum. Body weight (kg) and body fat percentage (%) were determined using the Inbody 270 professional body analysis device. A portable dynamic balance device was used to determine the students' balance. The test results were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics software. Non-parametric tests were employed since the data did not show a normal distribution. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to test the significance of the difference in balance and body fat percentage (BFP) level averages between the two independent groups. Upon evaluating our data, it was statistically ascertained that the dynamic balance (Balance) values of Group 1 secondary school students were significantly higher when compared to Group 2 students. However, no statistically significant difference was found in body fat percentage (BFP) values between Group 1 and Group 2. As a result, it is seen that increasing physical education lesson hours in secondary education contributes to some physical development of young individuals.

Bowler, Alexander; Ozturk, Samet; di Bari, Vincenzo; Glover, Zachary J.; Watson, Nicholas J.
In manufacturing environments, real-time monitoring of yoghurt fermentation is required to maintain an optimal production schedule, ensure product quality, and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Ultrasonic sensors combined with machine learning models offer the potential for non-invasive process monitoring. However, methods are required to ensure the models are robust to changing ultrasonic measurement distributions as a result of changing process conditions. As it is unknown when these changes in distribution will occur, domain adaptation methods are needed that can be applied to newly acquired data in real-time. In this work, yoghurt fermentation processes are monitored using non-invasive ultrasonic sensors. Furthermore, a transmission based method is compared to an industrially-relevant non-transmission method which does not require the sound wave to travel through the fermenting yoghurt. Three machine learning algorithms were investigated including fully-connected neural networks, fully-connected neural networks with long short-term memory layers, and convolutional neural networks with long short-term memory layers. Three real-time domain adaptation strategies were also evaluated, namely; feature alignment, prediction alignment, and feature removal. The most accurate method (mean squared error of 0.008 to predict pH during fermentation) was non-transmission based and used convolutional neural networks with long short-term memory layers, and a combination of all three domain adaption methods.

Ozturk, Samet; Bowler, Alexander; Rady, Ahmed; Watson, Nicholas J.
In food production environments, the wrong powder material is occasionally loaded onto a production line which impacts food safety, product quality, and production economics. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of using Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy combined with Machine Learning to classify food powders under motion conditions. Two NIR sensors with different wavelength ranges were compared and the ML models were tasked with classifying between 25 food powder materials. Eleven different spectra pre-processing methods, three feature selection methods, and five algorithms were investigated to find the optimal ML pipeline. It was found that pre-processing the spectra using autoencoders followed by using support vector machines with the all spectral wavelengths from both sensors was most accurate. The results were improved further using under-sampling and boosting. Overall, this method achieved 99.52, 97.12, 94.08, and 91.68% accuracy for the static, 0.017, 0.036 and 0.068 m s-1 sample speeds. The models were also validated using an independent test sets.

- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1“Who am I?” A qualitative meta-synthesis of Chemotherapy‐induced alopecia and body image perception in breast cancer patients
Kocan, Sema; Aktug, Cemile; Gursoy, Ayla
Background: Since alopecia may be the first physical evidence and sign of cancer diagnosis and treatment, it may have a more serious and challenging effect on a woman than the loss of breast tissue. Objective: The purpose of this study was to summarize the current qualitative research which explores the body image perceptions of breast cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced alopecia. Material and methods: We searched three electronic databases and reviewed studies from December 2011 to December 2021 for qualitative results analysing the experiences of women with breast cancer and chemotherapy-induced alopecia. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical (JBI) appraisal tool was used to assess the quality of the targeted studies. The Meta-synthesis process developed by Sandelowski and Barroso was used to collect and analyse the data. Results: We discovered two main and five sub-themes from the meta-synthesis findings of 11 qualitative studies involving 225 women. The main themes were “I am not comfortable in this body” and “Who am I?”. The first main theme revealed patients’ intense reactions to their hair loss: “I'm in emotional chaos”, “I am looking for a place to hide” and “I knew it and now I’m experiencing it”.The second main theme of “Who am I?” contained two sub-themes: “What did my hair take from my femininity when it was gone?” and “Will I lose my partner after my hair?”. Conclusion: Meta-synthesis provided an up-to-date and integrated interpretation of scientific results about the experiences of women with breast cancer, alopecia, and their body image perceptions. This interpretation will facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the alopecia-body image relationship. Thus, the aim of the meta-synthesis results is that these will contribute to nurses’ understanding of how alopecia, although a temporary symptom, affects women's perceptions of body image.

Yilanci, Veli; Adali, Zafer; Çelik, Orkun; Bari, Bilgin
Ecological balance is an indicator of environmental degradation, which is computed as the difference between biocapacity and ecological footprint. In this study, we examine whether the effect of shocks on the ecological balance is permanent or temporary in the EU-15 countries, considering the period from 1961 to 2018. The application of unit root tests, with and without a Fourier function, indicates that the effects of shocks are temporary in only four countries. To reveal the persistence of shocks at different frequencies, that is, the short-, medium-, and long-run, we decomposed the ecological balance series by using the Discrete Wavelet Transform method. The unit root test results show that the effects of shocks are temporary in all countries in the short-run. However, the results also show that the shocks are temporary in nine countries in the medium-run and ten countries in the long-run. Thus, the implemented policies to balance ecology are not effective in the short-run but are effective in only six countries in the medium-term and in only five countries in the long-term. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering different frequencies when testing the effectiveness of empirically implemented policies. Regarding policy implications, this study suggests focusing on medium- and long-term environmental policies rather than short-term ones.

The number of controversies and debates about integrating Islamic law into the national legal system in Indonesia has led to many counter-productive perceptions, so progressive thinking is needed all parties can accept that. Therefore, this study examines the thoughts of Agus Moh Najib, a Muslim scholar, on integrating Islamic law into the national legal system to create a fair legal system by the demands of society and the state. Methodologically, this research uses a philosophical approach with library research and is also descriptive-analytical qualitative research. The results of this study state that Islamic Law and Indonesian law have several interrelationships and interconnections perspectives on Agus Moh Najib's. He provides recommendations that to maximise the interconnectivity of Islamic law to national law, the first step that needs to be taken is to redesign, reformulate and renovate the ushul fiqh building, which is the basis for the formation of Islamic law without having to tear it down by reviewing existing concepts and theories so that the role of ushul fiqh can be more optimal in developing Islamic legal science that contributes to the formation of laws and regulations in Indonesia. Then harmonisation is carried out between Islamic law and various legal sciences developed in Indonesia regarding subject matter and language. In other words, it is necessary to strive for the formation of the Islamic law that is in harmony with legal science in general based on the ideal moral norms of the core teachings of Islam and also considers the culture and empirical realities that exist in plural Indonesian society.

In the present investigation, the application of an organic coprecipitant, 2-[5,6-dichloro-2-(2-bromobenzyl)-1H-benzimidazole-1-yl]acetohydrazide (DIBBA), for separation and preconcentration of Cu(II) ions in fruit and water samples through a new carrier element free coprecipitation (CEFC) method was researched for the first time. Flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) was used for the analyses of Cu(II) ions. The main effective experimental factors such as solution pH, DIBBA quantity, waiting time, centrifuge speed and duration and volume of sample on the recovery efficiency of Cu(II) ions were explored in detail. Under the optimized conditions the preconcentration factor (PF), relative standard deviation (RSD), and limits of detection (LOD) was achieved as 50, 3.4 % and 0.44 µg L-1, respectively. No interference effects were detected by virtue of the presence of various foreign ions. Satisfactory recoveries (in the range of 94.4 to 103.0 %) in the environmental sample matrix were acquired. After being validated the recommended selective, low cost, simple and rapid CEFC method by spike/recovery tests, it was properly implemented for the low levels detection of Cu(II) ions in sour cherry, mulberry, apple, and peach as fruit samples and stream and sea water samples without any significant matrix effects.

Duran, Celal; Ozdes, Duygu
The coating of magnetic Fe3O4 Alnus glutinosa sawdust biochar with SiO2 and further functionalising by cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant, was described for the first time in the current paper. The magnetic Fe3O4 Alnus glutinosa sawdust biochar/SiO2/CTAB(MAGBC/SiO2/CTAB) was implemented to separate and preconcentrate the Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ions efficiently in waters and a number of fruit samples by solid-phase extraction (SPE) method. Adsorbent characterisation was realised by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fundamental factors affecting the extraction yield of the analyte ions including solution pH, adsorbent amount, sample volume and desorption contact time were fully researched and optimised as 8.0, 0.25 g, 500 mL and 60 min, respectively, and the eluent was specified as 5.0 mL of 0.1 M of HCl solution. The adsorption equilibrium eventuated after 15 min of contact time and it was noticed that the chemisorption mechanism was dominant upon the analyte ions adsorption. The limits of detection (LOD) were calculated as 0.24, 0.62 and 1.55 µg L−1 and the limits of quantitation (LOQ) were determined as 0.81, 2.08, and 5.17 µg L−1 for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively. The relative recoveries (RR%) were in the ranges of 93.3–103.4%, 92.5–102.8%, and 91.8–101.9% for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, respectively, while the relative standard deviations (RSD%) were obtained lower than 4.0% (n = 10) by applying the method at optimised conditions. The maximum adsorption capacities of MAGBC/SiO2/CTAB were obtained as 123.7, 80.0 and 118.5 mg g−1for Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ions, respectively. Consequently, the developed new, simple, rapid, sensitive, and economical SPE method based on MAGBC/SiO2/CTAB was successfully implemented to waters and some of the fruit samples to determine the Cu2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ions simultaneously.

Corruption involves greed, money, and risky decision-making. We explore the love of money, pay satisfaction, probability of risk, and dishonesty across cultures. Avaricious monetary aspiration breeds unethicality. Prospect theory frames decisions in the gains-losses domain and high-low probability. Pay dissatisfaction (in the losses domain) incites dishonesty in the name of justice at the individual level. The Corruption Perceptions Index, CPI, signals a high-low probability of getting caught for dishonesty at the country level. We theorize that decision-makers adopt avaricious love-of-money aspiration as a lens and frame dishonesty in the gains-losses domain (pay satisfaction-dissatisfaction, Level 1) and high-low probability (CPI, Level 2) to maximize expected utility and ultimate serenity. We challenge the myth: Pay satisfaction mitigates dishonesty across nations consistently. Based on 6500 managers in 32 countries, our cross-level three-dimensional visualization offers the following discoveries. Under high aspiration conditions, pay dissatisfaction excites the highest- (third-highest) avaricious justice-seeking dishonesty in high (medium) CPI nations, supporting the certainty effect. However, pay satisfaction provokes the second-highest avaricious opportunity-seizing dishonesty in low CPI entities, sustaining the possibility effect-maximizing expected utility. Under low aspiration conditions, high pay satisfaction consistently leads to low dishonesty, demonstrating risk aversion-achieving ultimate serenity. We expand prospect theory from a micro and individual-level theory to a cross-level theory of monetary wisdom across 32 nations. We enhance the S-shaped Curve to three 3-D corruption surfaces across three levels of the global economic pyramid, providing novel insights into behavioral economics, business ethics, the environment, and responsibility.

Objective: Vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-2) prevents the development of serious diseases has been shown in many studies. However, the effect of vaccination on outcomes in COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care is not clear. Methods: This is a retrospective multicenter study conducted in 17 intensive care unit (ICU) in Turkey between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021. Patients aged 18 years and older who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and followed in ICU were included in the study. Patients who have never been vaccinated and patients who have been vaccinated with a single dose were considered unvaccinated. Logistic regression models were fit for the two outcomes (28-day mortality and in-hospital mortality). Results: A total of 2968 patients were included final analysis. The most of patients followed in the ICU during the study period were unvaccinated (58.5%). Vaccinated patients were older, had higher Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), and had higher APACHE-2 scores than unvaccinated patients. Risk for 28-day mortality and in-hospital mortality was similar in across the year both vaccinated and unvaccinated patients. However, risk for in-hospital mortality and 28-day mortality was higher in the unvaccinated patients in quarter 4 adjusted for gender and CCI (OR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.06-1.99 and OR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.03-1.96, respectively) compared to the vaccinated group. Conclusion: Despite effective vaccination, fully vaccinated patients may be admitted to ICU because of disease severity. Unvaccinated patients were younger and had fewer comorbid conditions. Unvaccinated patients have an increased risk of 28-day mortality when adjusted for gender and CCI.

Zabci, Cengiz; Sançar, Taylan; Tikhomirov, Dmitry; Ivy-ochs, Susan; Vockenhuber, Christof; Friedrich, Anke M.; Yazici, Muge; Akçar, Naki
The active tectonics of Anatolia is mostly characterized by its westward motion with respect to Eurasia between the Hellenic subduction in the west and Arabia-Eurasia continental collision in the east. Although most of the deformation is suggested to be confined along Anatolias boundary elements, viz. the North and East Anatolian shear zones, recent studies indicate a higher magnitude of internal strain accumulation, especially along the parallel/subparallel strike-slip faults of its central province. We present the first morphochronology-based slip rate estimate for one of these strike-slip structures, the Ovacik Fault, by using cosmogenic 36Cl dating of offset fluvial deposits. At the Kcseler Site (39.3643 degrees N, 39.1688 degrees E), two faulted risers, bounding the alluvial fan with its subplanar surface (NF1/NF1') and the inset terrace tread (NF1/T2), are offset 19-24 and 15-22 m, respectively. The scattered surface ages and variability of 36Cl concentrations in depth profiles suggest strong evidence for inheritance in alluvial fan and terrace deposits; thus, we used modelled depth-profile ages for both surfaces. The modelled ages 8-10 ka for NF1 and 6-8 ka for T2 yield slip-rate estimates 2.4 +0.5/-0.4 mm/a and 2.8 +0.7/-0.7 mm/a, respectively, for the upper-tread reconstruction of the NF1/NF1'and the lower-tread reconstruction of the NF1/T2. Our results together with previous slip-rate estimates for other structures show a significant internal deformation for Anatolia, especially along its subparallel strike-slip faults. These secondary faults slice Anatolia into several pieces giving rise to the formation of the Malatya-Erzincan, Cappadocian, and Central Anatolian slices, where the geometry is strongly controlled by the distribution of the Tethyan accretionary complexes.

Stefanidis, Abraham; Banai, Moshe; Newburry, William; Fainshmidt, Stav; Richter, Ulf Henning; Schinzel, Ursula; Kong, Yin; Erkus, Ahmet; Shakirova, Svetlana; Ozbek, Mehmet Ferhat
This study integrates institutional and dispositional theories to develop a multilevel model predicting that managers' endorsement of formal contracts increases with the quality of formal institutions. This effect is contingent upon managerial dispositions of ethical idealism and interpersonal trust, which provide a morally driven override of uncertainty and a substitute source of certainty in business practices, respectively. We test our arguments on hand-collected data from 3,652 manager-negotiators in 16 countries. We find that managers endorse formal contracts when they are embedded in contexts with high quality contract enforcement institutions, but this effect diminishes substantially among ethically idealistic managers. These results suggest that an understanding of managers' reliance on formal contracts requires multilevel theory informed by how managerial dispositions interact with the formal institutional context.

BackgroudTwelve taxa of herbaceous Paeonia species were recorded in Turkiye. All definitions were performed morphologically and/or anatomically and there is no study based on DNA barcode sequences. Three barcode regions were sequenced to determine the phylogenetic relationships of Turkish Paeonia taxa. The chemical comparison of roots was also investigated. Methods and resultsThe taxons were collected between May and June 2021 from nine cities. Leaf materials were used for DNA isolation and ITS, matK and rbcL regions were amplified and sequenced. There was no difference among taxa in terms of rbcL sequences. But the ITS and matK regions distinguished 12 taxa and structured them in two groups. ITS region distinguished P. peregrina, P. arietina, and P. tenuifolia from other taxa, while matK region distinguished P. arietina and P. witmanniana from other taxa. Both barcode sequences actually showed that the registration of P. mascula subsp. arasicola was actually 100% similar to P. arietina. ITS was the most polymorphic region (n = 54) followed by matK (n = 9). These sequences could successfully discriminate Paoenia species from each other and diploid P. tenuifolia. The methanolic root (100 gr) extracts were examined for total phenolic and flavonoid content, and antioxidant activities. Significant variation was found for polyphenolic content, and antioxidant properties (TPC from 204.23 to 2343.89 mg, TFC from 7.73 to 66.16 mg, and FRAP from 523.81 to 4338.62 mg). SC50 values of ABTS and DPPH were ranged from 115.08 to 1115.52 mu g/ml and 73.83 to 963.59 mu g/ml, respectively.ConclusionIt was concluded that 11 of 12 taxa had differences in terms of ITS and matK sequences and these region must be used for the correct identification of Turkish Paeonia.

Turkey's Early Paleozoic tectonic evolution has received much attention in recent years. Early Paleozoic intrusive rocks are mainly distributed across Europe, Turkey (Istanbul-Zonguldak Zone, Strandja Zone, and Tauride Block), and Iran. However, the Early Paleozoic rocks have not yet been identified in north Turkey's Sakarya Zone, and thus the Early Paleozoic paleogeography of the Sakarya Zone remains enigmatic. Here, we provide new field observations, petrography, geochemistry, and geochronology of the western Sakarya Zone to identify the nature, origin, and tectonic setting of the Ordovician magmatic rocks cropping out in the So center dot gut area (Bilecik, northwest Turkey). Our Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) U-Pb analyses on zircons suggest that the So center dot gut metagranites were emplaced at-484-461 Ma (except two zircons with ages of 490 and 494 Ma). There are abundant inherited zircon cores in the So center dot gut metagranites, with ages of >500 Ma to-2.2 Ga. The inherited Cadomian cores give concordant ages of 588 and 572 Ma. The So center dot gut metagranites are felsic and have high SiO2 (72-76 wt%) and K2O (4.1-5.3 wt%) contents, with high K2O/Na2O ratios (1.2-1.9), and low Mg# (17-35) values. The samples are Ca-poor (CaO = 0.52-0.68 wt%) and show peraluminous [A/CNK = molar Al2O3/(K2O + CaO + Na2O) = 1.15-1.28] and high-K calc-alkaline geochemical characters, with high modal content of muscovite (-10%), consistent with S-type compositions. The samples have low REE concentrations, with negative Eu anomalies. Ordovician zircon rims show epsilon Hf(t) values of +3.6 to-35.4, whereas inherited zircon cores have epsilon Hf(t) values of +33.9 to-26.1. Our data, in conjunction with previous studies, suggest that the So center dot gut metagranites were generated by fluid-absent muscovite-dehydration melting of metasediments accumulated in a back-arc setting. This back-arc basin was characterized by a denuded continental crust with abundant pelite-dominated sediments and minor input of juvenile mafic melts. Our results, combined with previously published data and paleogeographic reconstructions, allow us to conclude that the Ordovician S-type granites were formed by progressive back-arc extension and crustal thinning prompted by the rollback of the southward subducting oceanic-lithosphere slab. This led to the opening of the Rheic Ocean on the northern side of Gondwana in response to the final closure and termination of the Tornquist Ocean as a branch of the Iapetus Ocean. We argue that the Ordovician S-type granites from the northern side of Gondwana could signal significant crustal reworking away from any clear continental collision zone.
