Arslan, Neslihan; Bozkır, Eda; Koçak, Tevfik; Akin, Meleksen; Yilmaz, Birsen
The effect of diet on sleep quality has been addressed in many studies; however, whether/how plant-based diets (PBDs) impact sleep-related parameters has not been explored in detail. This review aims to give an overview of the components of PBDs and the possible mechanisms through which PBDs may improve sleep quality. Studies have indicated that diets such as PBDs, which are typically high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fiber, are associated with better sleep outcomes, including less fragmented sleep and improved sleep duration. Several mechanisms may explain how PBDs impact and/or improve sleep outcomes. Firstly, PBDs are characteristically rich in certain nutrients, such as magnesium and vitamin B6, which have been associated with improved sleep patterns. Secondly, PBDs are often lower in saturated fats and higher in fiber, which may contribute to better overall health, including sleep quality. Additionally, plant bioactive compounds like phytochemicals and antioxidants in fruits, vegetables, and herbs may have sleep-promoting effects. According to available data, PBD and Mediterranean diet elements promise to enhance sleep quality; however, it is crucial to note that diets should be customized based on each person’s needs.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Improving brain tumor classification with combined convolutional neural networks and transfer learning
İncir, Ramazan; Bozkurt, Ferhat
Brain tumors pose a serious threat, causing the deaths of thousands of people worldwide, and can lead to life-threatening consequences when not accurately diagnosed. The classification of brain tumors and the determination of correct treatment strategies are crucial, yet this process encounters various challenges. These tumors originate from different cell types and exhibit diversity in growth rates, histological features, and genetic structures. Some may show similarities at the microscopic level, complicating classification and making diagnosis and treatment challenging. The examination of brain MR images is a widely used method in diagnosing brain tumors. However, occasional misdiagnosis of tumors can lead to ineffective responses to treatments and reduced chances of survival for patients. Traditional machine learning classifiers require manually determined features, which is quite time-consuming. On the other hand, deep learning is highly effective in feature extraction and has recently been widely preferred in classification. In this context, the effectiveness of transfer learning architectures in brain tumor diagnosis was evaluated. Six different transfer learning architectures, including ResNet-50, MobileNet, VGG16, Inception-V3, DenseNet-121, and EfficientNetV2-M, were used in this study. A public MRI dataset was used for model validation and comparison with similar studies. To address the imbalance in the number of images among classes in the dataset, data augmentation techniques such as random rotation were applied during data preprocessing. Experiments revealed that the EfficientNetV2-M model outperformed other architectures with a 98.01% accuracy rate. Additionally, the study aimed to create a new model with more comprehensive feature extraction and generalization ability by combining the advantages of multiple models in different combinations. In this context, combinations of EfficientNetV2-M architecture with Inception-V3 and DenseNet-121 architectures were formed. Through these combinations, a concatenation-based EfficientNetV2-M + Inception-V3 model achieved a 98.41% accuracy value. It was observed that the proposed concatenation-based model outperformed advanced methods in improving medical imaging techniques and patient outcomes.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are injuries with a high incidence in athletes, and ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is a surgical treatment orthopedists perform. This study aims to compare the 6 and 12 months post-op results of single leg hop tests (SLHT) performed in multidirectional conventional semitendinosus/gracilis (ST/G) and modified all inside (MAI) ACLR techniques on both sides and the limb symmetry indexes (LSI) of both techniques. This study evaluated a retrospective cohort of 50 male athletes who applied MAI (n = 23) and traditional ACLR ST/G (n = 27) techniques. Functional knee strength of the participants on both sides was measured with different SLHTs at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. The SLHT included medial side (MSTH), triple hop (TH), medial rotation (90◦) (MRH), crossover triple (CH) ve the single hop (SH) hop for distance. Both ACLR techniques showed significant improvement in mean Tegner, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Lysholm scores preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively (p < 0.05). For MAI and ST/G techniques, there was no significant difference in the results of SLHTs at 6 and 12 months for both the operated and non-operated sides (p < 0.05). Significance was found only in the MRH test of the non-operated side (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in SLHT scores between the operated and non-operated sides at 6 and 12 months postoperatively (p > 0.05). There was no difference in LSI scores between techniques (p < 0.05). Our study revealed similar LSI rates in ST/G and MAI techniques at 6 and 12 months, suggesting that MAI technique can be used as a functional ACLR technique for athletes.

Ozturk, Omer Faruk; Mazlum, Yusuf; Aydin, Metin Mutlu; Coruh, Emine; Bayata, Halim Ferit
Recent advances in tunnel infrastructure have emphasized safety, operational efficiency and low operating costs. Modern tunnels are equipped with systems to improve both safety and operational performance. This study investigates the effect of tunnel lighting and vehicle breakdown scenarios on driver lane changing behaviour (LCB) using a driving simulator modelled on the third longest twin-tube tunnel. Data were collected from 125 drivers considering various driver characteristics with different lighting conditions and the presence of a stopped vehicle in a lane. The results show that drivers tend to slow down and change lanes more safely in response to red and flashing lights. In contrast, blue sky lights, which are designed to reduce stress and compare with other dangerous scenarios, had no significant effect on LCB. In addition, demographic factors such as gender and previous simulator experience played a role in influencing LCB tendencies. Female drivers and those familiar with simulators showed more cautious behaviour. The findings showed valuable insights into how tunnel lighting systems can improve safety. Results highlighted the potential for dynamic lighting and targeted driver training programs to improve tunnel safety. All these findings may contribute to ongoing efforts to improve traffic management and reduce accidents in tunnel environments.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the impact of oral and dental health status on the self-esteem levels of Turkish university youth. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study included a sample of 962 Turkish university youth, aged 16 - 24, who met all the study criteria during the 2020 - 2021 academic year. Data were collected using a questionnaire and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The data were analyzed with SPSS version 23.0. T-tests were used for pairwise comparisons, and one-way ANOVA was used for multiple comparisons. Results: Among the students who participated in the study, 56.7% were found to have high self-esteem, with a mean RSES score of 1.69 ± 1.62. Statistically significant differences were found between the RSES score and several factors, including decayed teeth (P < 0.01), presence of halitosis (P < 0.01), tooth color (P < 0.01), crooked teeth (P = 0.045), and toothache (P = 0.008). It was determined that dental crookedness, decayed teeth, bad breath, dark yellow teeth, the presence of tooth fillings, and extracted teeth were negatively associated with self-esteem. However, no statistically significant differences were found between selfesteem and factors such as the presence of tooth fillings, extracted teeth, tooth brushing habits, frequency of dental visits, or snack food consumption (P > 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study reveal that poor oral care negatively impacts individuals' self-esteem. Issues related to oral and dental health, particularly concerning the appearance and condition of teeth, affect young people's relationships and self-confidence in social environments. It is crucial to develop family and school education programs, as well as national policies, particularly during childhood and university years, when attitudes toward oral and dental health are being established.

This study aimed to determine the risk level of noise, which is an important physical risk, in small and medium-sized furniture industry enterprises. The noise levels of the circular sawing machines, edge banding machines, and mitre cutting machines, which are among the main processing machines of the sector, were measured. The study was carried out in 32 furniture businesses. The possible risks of noise on the operators of the machines in question and other employees were evaluated. Noise level measurements were made with the help of TESTO 815 measuring device. Dunnett’s T3 test was used to detect differences in noise levels for machine operators and other employees. It was determined that the edge banding machine does not pose an occupational health and safety risk in terms of noise risk factors. However, the mitre cutting machine and the circular sawing machine pose a risk for the machine operator in active production by creating noise above the established exposure limit value. The mitre cutting machine carries the same risk for the machine operator when it is in operation but in passive production. The results revealed the need for personal protective equipment for machine operators for mitre cutting and circular sawing machine.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Uncovering the determinants of bottom-up CO2 emissions among households in Türkiye: Analysis and policy recommendations
Coruh, Emine; Bilgic, Abdulbaki; Cengiz, Vedat; Urak, Faruk
Amid escalating global concerns surrounding climate change, the transportation sector has garnered the attention of stakeholders. Double-hurdle censored models were employed in this study to elucidate the relationship between the probability of private fuel expenditure and expenditure levels and household characteristics to determine the factors contributing to household-based CO2 emissions. Remarkably, nearly two-thirds of the 38 factors examined contributed to the emitters, and almost all emitters were identified as statistically significant. This alarming situation underscores the importance of formulating family based green transformation policies. If successful, these policies can ignite transformative momentum. Consequently, understanding household transportation expenditure from a bottom-up perspective can provide invaluable insights into crafting a comprehensive set of top-line policy recommendations for innovation and marketing strategies in the transport and energy sectors. Measures such as incentivizing the adoption of electric vehicles through economic incentives, expanding public transportation networks, and implementing sustainable housing policies have immense potential to effectively reduce private fuel expenditure. When implemented holistically, these strategies can pave the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

Kocabaş, Selahattin; Topal, Fevzi
Sorbus subfusca (ledeb. ex. nordm.) boiss. (Sorbus subfusca) belongs to the Rosacese family. It is commonly referred to as highland rowan. It is an endemic species found only in the eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey and in a few countries on the Asian Continent. Both water (WESS) and ethyl alcohol (EESS) lyophilized forms were used as extracts. Different reducing capacity methods and radical scavenging activity methods were used to study the antioxidant activities of the extracts. Total phenolic compounds were calculated as 43.5 (WESS) and 43.0 (EESS) µg GAE/mg extract. This value is an indication that it can take place in plants with high phenolic content. Peroxidation inhibition percentages of linoleic acid emulsion at 20 µg mL-1 concentration for WESS and EESS; WESS was calculated as 70.93% and EESS as 82.63%. The high antioxidant capacity of Sorbus subfusca, an endemic species, brings up the preference of natural products as antioxidants. It is thought that these studies will draw a new path to the literature, especially alternative medicine and pharmacological studies.

Günen, Mehmet Akif; Atasever, Umit Haluk
Water resources are essential for the ecological system and the development of civilization. Water is imperative factor for health preservation and sustaining various human activities, including industrial production, agriculture, and daily life. Remote sensing provides a cost-effective and practical means to detect and monitor water bodies, offers valuable insights into the impact of climatic events on water structures, especially in coastal lake regions. The research primarily utilizes Landsat-9 OLI-2 satellite images to evaluate the effectiveness of various water indices (WRI, NWI, MNDWI, NDWI) in combination with global automatic thresholding methods (K-Means, Zhenzhou's, Adaptive, Intermodes, Prewitt and Mendelsohn's Minimum, Maximum Entropy, Median, Concavity, Percentile, Intermeans, Kittler and Illingworth's Minimum Error, Tsai's Moments, Otsu's, Huang's fuzzy, Triangle, Mean, IsoData, Li's). The study was carried out on Lake Nazik, Lake Iznik, and Lake Beyşehir, which have unique geographical characteristics, and examined the adaptability and robustness of the selected indices and thresholding methods. MNDWI consistently stands out as a robust index for water extraction, delivering accurate results across different thresholding methods in regions all three lakes. As a result of quite extensive analysis, it is obtained that MNDWI and NDWI are reliable choices for water feature extraction in various lake environments, but the specific index should consider the thresholding method and unique lake characteristics. The Minimum thresholding method stands out as the most effective thresholding technique, demonstrating impressive results across different lakes. Specifically, it achieved an average Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 78.97 and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) of 99.37 for Lake Nazik, 74.08 PSNR and 98.34 SSIM for Lake Iznik, and 63.96 PSNR and 93.61 SSIM for Lake Beyşehir.

Sibil (Şibil), Rahim
The performance of turbulence models was investigated to predict the flow and turbulence features of the vegetated channel using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The Ansys Fluent, CFD software was implemented for the numerical studies. The flow was three-dimensional, incompressible, steady, and turbulent. Ten turbulence models, provided by Ansys Fluent, were implemented for the comparative study. The numerical model was validated against an experimental study conducted in the literature. The numerical studies show that the Renormalization group k-ϵ model is the most successful model for predicting the flow characteristics of the vegetated channel with a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) value of 0.2752. At the same time, the Reynolds Stress Model gives the least successful predictive performance, indicated by an RMSE value of 0.4302. Moreover, the Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) model offers the shortest computation time with a value of 6652.393 s, whereas the Shear Stress Transport k-ω model proves to be the most time-consuming with a value of 11 952.219 s. The velocity of water flow in a channel is not uniform as it is slower at the surface of leaves and faster in the free zones. The maximum velocity is observed in the middle section of the channel, below the leaf, and between the roots with the value of u = 0.1158 m/s. Furthermore, the characteristics of turbulence in a channel are influenced by several factors such as channel geometry, flow velocity, and vegetation distribution. As a result, the presence of vegetation in a channel affects the flow and turbulence characteristics of the water significantly.

Pandey, M.K.; Singh, G.N.; Zaman, Tolga; Mutairi, Aned Al; Mustafa, Manahil SidAhmed
This paper proposes a new calibration estimator for population variance within a stratified two-phase sampling design. It takes into account random non-response and measurement errors, specifically applying this method to estimate the variance in Gas turbine exhaust pressure data. The study integrates additional information from two highly positively correlated auxiliary variables to develop a general class of estimators tailored for the stratified two-phase sampling scheme. The properties of these estimators, in terms of their biases and mean square errors, have been thoroughly examined and extensively analyzed through numerical and simulation studies. Furthermore, the calibrated weights of the strata are derived. The proposed estimators outperform the natural estimator of population variance. Finally, suitable recommendations have been made for survey statisticians intending to apply these findings to real-life problems.

Reis, Hatice Catal; Turk, Veysel
Melanoma is a skin cancer that spreads quickly and has serious risks. Early diagnosis is essential, but since the symptoms of skin lesions in the early stages are vague and similar, they can be difficult for specialists to detect. Therefore, machine learning-based alternative diagnostic methods can be developed in addition to existing ones. This study proposes a new deep learning model, a modified lightweight vision transformer (ViT) architecture, and a hybrid framework developed with an integrated deep learning model and an Ensemble Learning (EL) model for the early-stage diagnosis of skin lesions. The proposed deep learning model was developed based on convolution layers and transformers. The model is called multi-head attention block depthwise separable convolution network (MABSCNET). The proposed hybrid framework was developed by combining modern deep learning and EL models pre-trained with the ImageNet dataset along with the MABSCNET model. In the experimental process, the effectiveness of the proposed methods was evaluated on the ISIC 2020 dataset. Additionally, additional experiments were conducted on ISIC 2018 and a Kaggle dataset to analyze the proposed hybrid framework's classification performance. Image enhancement techniques were used in the datasets. In the ISIC 2020 dataset, the MABSCNET model reached 78.63 % accuracy, the ViT model obtained 76.50 %, and the hybrid framework reached 92.74 % accuracy. Moreover, the proposed hybrid framework achieved 100 % on the ISIC 2018 dataset and 94.24 % on the Kaggle dataset.

Çetin, Gökhan; Ünker, Faruk
A two-wheeled robot has high maneuverability and can spin around with a high velocity but is prone to roll over under a recoil force. Because the wheels are only used to control the maneuver speed of the robot. However, a two-wheeled robot using a gyroscope does not need the control of the wheels and can maintain the stability of the robot under a recoil force during maneuvers even if the gimbal of the gyroscope is not controlled by a torque. In this study, the equations of motion of the gyroscopic robot are derived via Lagrangian equations, and the balancing performance of the uncontrolled gyroscope is simulated via Matlab to determine a desired configuration for mechatronics system design. Then, a linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) is implemented to the chosen control moment gyroscope (CMG) configuration and compared in simulations of RecurDyn. LQR controller was used to prevent oscillating motions of double CMGs under the recoil force of a weapon. The simulation results showed that the gyroscopic two-wheeled robot is improved using an LQR controller and powerfully balanced in static with excellent performance.

Güzel, Melih
Traditional vinegars are naturally produced from sugar- or starch-containing raw materials, through alcoholic fermentation followed by acetic fermentation. Fermentation is a spontaneous and complex process involving interactions between various microorganisms. In this study, we produced vinegar using traditional methods from six fruits: rosehip, pear, fig, wild pear, apple, and plum. Bacteria that produce bacterial cellulose (BC) were isolated from these vinegars and identified. In addition, we investigated the properties of BC produced from these bacteria. The strains isolated from vinegars were identified as Gluconobacter oxydans strain MG2022, Acetobacter tropicalis strain MG2022, Acetobacter fabarum strain MG2022, Komagataeibacter saccharivorans strain MG2022, K. saccharivorans strain EG2022, and Acetobacter lovaniensis strain OD2022. In total, 0.83–2.04 g/L BC was produced and the bacterial strain isolated from pear vinegar yielded the most BC. BC produced by the bacterial strain isolated from wild pear vinegar had the highest thermal stability and crystallinity (87.44 %). Overall, this study shows that different fruits contain different BC-producing bacteria in their natural flora and vinegars obtained from fruits can be used in BC production. Also, different BC-producing bacteria can be isolated from different vinegars, and BC produced by these bacteria might have different properties.

Foods high in erucic acid (EA), a fatty acid considered a natural toxin, can pose various health risks. Studies have reported that people exposed to high levels of EA are more likely to experience cardiovascular disease, are susceptible to myocardial adiposity, and have increased rates of diabetes. Therefore, in 2019, the European Commission (EC) declared that the maximum EA content in vegetable oils should be no more than 2%. These regulations require EA analysis in import and export food samples. A methyl ester of EA (EAME) standard is required to analyze EA content. In many countries, this analytical standard is not available and is being imported. This study endeavored to economically produce the EAME standard, which is in high demand due to mandated analysis, using natural oils. Initially, the fatty acid amounts in the food samples were analyzed by the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry/flame ionization detection (GC-MS/FID) method. The analyses revealed that mustard seed oil had the lowest EA content, while yellow mustard seed oil had the maximum EA content. The esterification was conducted on the samples containing both high and low EA, resulting in an efficiency of approximately 80%. The crystallization process was subsequently repeated to increase the EA quantity until the highest EAME content was obtained. By this process, 14 different concentrations of EAME ranging from 2.33 to 55.66% were produced. These results demonstrate the first successful production of EAME standards from natural oils that can be used in validation and internal quality control studies for food control analysis.
