Çevik, Ugur; Çelik, Ahmet; Çelik, Necati; Özkalayci, Fatih; Akbulut, Songul
In this study, a survey on environmental radioactivity in 16 high schools located in north eastern region of Turkey (the black sea region, province of Trabzon) was carried out. Indoor air radon (Rn-222) concentrations were measured in spring and autumn 2008 seasons using LR115 solid state nuclear track detectors and gamma radioactivity levels were measured using an HPGe gamma ray detector. It was seen that mean radon activity concentrations in schools ranged from 31 to 157 Bq/m(3) for spring season and from 38 to 114 Bq/m(3) for autumn season. The mean gamma activity concentrations in located areas of schools are between 18-52, 21-59, 11-97 and 265-759 Bq/kg for Ra-226, Th-232, Cs-137 and K-40, respectively. The annual effective doses of students and staff received due to radon and locations' gamma radioactivity levels are calculated.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ3EFFECT OF THE BODY CONDITION SCORE ON SOME REPRODUCTION AND MILK YIELD TRAITS OF SWEDISH RED AND WHITE COWS
Bayram, B.; Aksakal, V.; Akbulut, O.
This study examined the effect of body condition score (BCS) at calving and during the first month of lactation on some reproduction and milk yield traits of Swedish Red and White (SRW) cows organically raised in Turkey. For this purpose, SRW cows divided two groups, named as thin (BCS <3.00) and moderate (BCS >= 3.00). The actual milk yield (815 kg) and 305 day daily milk yield (736 kg) of cows with low condition score at calving were significantly (P<0.01) higher than those with moderate condition score. The BCS at calving did not have an effect on the lactation length, peak daily milk yield and days to attain peak milk yield. The condition score obtained in the first month of lactation only affected the peak daily milk yield (P<0.05), while its impact on the other characteristics was non-significant. The service period of the cows with low condition score at calving was significantly longer (19.9 day) and their number of services per conception was significantly lower (0.37 units) (P<0.05) than moderate group. The condition loss was calculated as 0.0137 units in the thin group and 0.2290 units in the moderate group and this differences were significant (P<0.01) during the first 30 day period of lactation. The phenotypic correlation between BCS at calving and milk yield traits were negative and significant (P<0.01). According to this relationship, actual milk yield (r=-0.208), 305 day milk yield (r=-0.248) and peak daily milk yield (r=-0.251) decreased significantly (P<0.01) with the increase in the BCS at calving. The service periods of cows with low condition scores at calving were significantly longer (P<0.01).

Sezer, Ismet
In this study, the effects of diethyl ether (DEE)-diesel fuel blends on the performance of a diesel engine investigated experimentally. The blends were prepared with the addition of 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 vol. % of DEE with a specified amount of diesel fuel. In the experiments, a single cylinder direct injection (DI) diesel experimental engine was used and compression ratio was fixed at 20. The experiments were performed with neat diesel fuel and DEE-diesel fuel blends at various engine speeds and wide open throttle conditions. The results of the study show that DEE addition to diesel fuel causes to decrease in engine performance parameters, i.e., brake mean effective pressure, brake torque and brake power. The decrement in performance parameters increased with increasing blending ratio. The maximum decrement in brake mean effective pressure was obtained with DEE10 blend as about 5.1%. However, brake thermal efficiency increases and brake specific fuel consumption decreases up to 7.5% DEE blending ratio. The maximum increment in brake thermal efficiency was obtained with DEE7.5 blend as about 10.9%. The same fuel blend gives about 8.7% reduction in brake specific fuel consumption. Additionally, exhaust gas temperature decreases and air excess coefficient increases with increasing DEE blending ratio.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of patients with traumatic rupture of diaphragm (TDR), the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches used in these cases and and the outcomes of the patients. Methods: Forty-one patients (31 males, 10 females; mean age 41.9 years; range 7 to 71 years) with thoracoabdominal trauma and diagnosis of TDR who were treated in our clinic between January 2000 and January 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were statistically compared in terms of age, gender, the time of diagnosis (early or late), the diagnostic procedures that were performed, whether the diagnosis of rupture was made during or after the operation, the localization of the rupture, the diameter of the rupture, accompanying injuries, the surgery performed, mortality and morbidity and the trauma injury severity score. Results: The etiology for the diaphragmatic rupture was blunt trauma in 43.9% and penetrating trauma in 56.10% of the patients. 85.36% of the patients were diagnosed in early stage and 14.64% in late stage. Herniation dignosis was made radiologically in 118 (43.9%) patients and diaphragmatic rupture was detected during the operation in 23 patients (56.1%). Twenty-nine (70.73%) patients had thoracotomy, seven (17.02%) patients had laparatomy and five (12.19%) patients had thoracotomy plus laparatomy. The overall mortality rate was 14.63% (n=6). Conclusion: Traumatic diaphragmatic ruptures may have a fatal course depending on the strangulation of the herniating abdominal viscera. Traumatic diaphgram rupture should be suspected in all multitraumatic patients and these cases shuld be seriously evaluated for the definitive diagnosis and treatment plan.

Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Suleyman; Altunisik, Ahmet Can; Sevim, Baris
In this study, it is aim to perform the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. Fatih Sultan Mehmet Suspension Bridge connecting the Europe and Asia in Istanbul is selected as an example. Finite element models of the bridge are modelled using SAP2000 program considering project drawing. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Because of the fact that the bridge has steel structural system, only prestressing steel relaxation is considered as time dependent material properties. The structural behaviour of the bridge at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. As analyses result, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given with detail. It is seen that construction stage analysis has remarkable effect on the structural behaviour of the bridge.

Ertas, Gokhan; Kozdag, Guliz; Emre, Ender; Akay, Yasar; Ural, Dilek; Hebert, Kathy
Mean platelet volume (MPV) is increased in chronic heart failure (CHF) and is an independent predictor of mortality in CHF patients. It is not known whether enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) therapy leads to decreased MPV values or not. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of EECP on platelet count and MPV values and to assess the influence of MPV on the risk of death and recurrent ischemic events in ischemic CHF patients. A total of 68 ischemic heart failure patients with CHF symptoms and refractory angina pectoris were included in the study, 47 consecutive patients (39 males and eight females) aged 44-82 years. Although follow-up period started after completion of EECP in treated patients, control group follow-up started at the end of 7-week treatment without EECP. All patients were monitored for a mean duration of 13 +/- 8 months (range, 1-36 months). The primary endpoints of the study were effects of EECP treatment on platelets after treatment period (7 weeks) and the recurrence of ischemic events. Secondary endpoint was cardiovascular death during the follow-up period. We observed a significant increase in platelet count and decrease in MPV levels (P=0.044 and P=0.004, respectively) in the control group. There were no significant differences in platelet count and MPV levels in the EECP group (P>0.05). After the treatment period, New York Heart Association functional classification (2.60 +/- 0.75 vs. 1.72 +/- 0.68, P<0.001) and Canadian Cardiovascular Society functional classification of angina (2.50 +/- 0.90 vs. 1.60 +/- 0.74, P<0.001) improved in patients with EECP treatment. In our study, we found that EECP therapy had a neutral effect on MPV values and platelet count Blood Coagul Fibrinolysis 23:127-131 (C) 2012 Wolters Kluwer Health vertical bar Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Akpinar, Salih; Temiz, Semsettin; Aydin, Murat Demir; Özel, Adnan
In this work, elasto-plastic stress analysis of single lap joints with and without protrusion in adhesive bondline subjected to tension and bending was carried out using 2D non-linear finite element analysis and confirmed experimentally. AA 2024-T3 aluminum adherends were bonded with SBT 9244 film adhesive. The protrusion was obtained by extending the adhesive film by 2 mm from the overlap length at both overlap ends. Three different adherend thicknesses and overlap lengths for each loading and bondline type were used. The joints with and without protrusion, for comparison, were loaded with the same load for each adherend thickness and overlap length. Finally, it was observed that the protrusion reduces the strength in the joint under tension, while the protrusion increases the strength in the joint under bending.

Sevim, Baris; Altunisik, Ahmet Can; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Akköse, Mehmet; Adanur, Suleyman
Using experimental methods, this study presents the estimation of the dynamic and static ( secant) elasticity modules of a prototype arch dam. These experimental methods are ambient vibration tests, uniaxial compression tests, and ultrasonic velocity tests. Implementation of the methods on a prototypical arch dam-reservoir-foundation model of the dam, constructed under laboratory conditions, allows estimation of the elasticity modules. Random impact loads excite the arch dam during ambient vibration testing, which creates response signals for measurement. Commercially available software transfers the signals, and processing those signals allows estimation of the experimental natural frequencies of the arch dam. Analysis of a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) of the arch dam determines natural frequencies. The estimation of the elasticity modules of the arch dam arises from a comparison of the experimental and analytical frequencies. The uniaxial compression tests use several specimens of the fresh and hardened concrete of the prototype model, and those tests provide the compressive strengths and stress-strain relationships. The ultrasonic velocity tests apply several velocity measurements to the arch dam and foundation, resulting in estimation of the elasticity modulus from empirical equations related to concrete mix design, compressive strength, and velocity values. This study discusses the difficulties of the determination of the elasticity modulus and suggests that ambient vibration testing and the finite element method are useful for overcoming these difficulties. Takma, Cigdem; Atil, Hulya; Aksakal, Vecihi
In this study, effects of lactation length, calving year and service period on lactation milk yield of Holstein Friesians were modeled with multiple regression and artificial neural networks (ANN) and compared goodness of fit of models. Analyses were carried on five lactations milk yields of 305 Holsteins calved at 2006, 2007 and 2008 years. After several experiments, hidden layer number was taken one and hidden nodes number were found three for the chosen architecture. Moreover, convergence criteria, maximum iteration number and epoch number were taken as 1.10(-6), 50 and 20, respectively. Adjusted coefficient of determination (R-2),root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute deviation (MAD), mean absolute percentage error performance criteria (MAPE) were used for comparison of artificial neural network and multiple linear regression models goodness of fit. After analysis R-2 values were found among 0.62-0.85 for the five lactations with neural networks model. RMSE, MAD and MAPE criteria also were found among 480.9-1682.8, 325.2-1381.7 and 6.1-20.2, respectively. These criteria were found for R-2, RMSE, MAD and MAPE among 0.30-0.75, 1964.8-30008.7, 1576.6-2458.3 and 24.7-35.6, respectively for multiple linear regression. When the models were compared, artificial neural networks model gave better fit than multiple linear regression models. Consequently, artificial neural networks was determined an alternative method to multiple regression analysis.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ2Seismic Performance Assessment of Masonry Tile Domes through Nonlinear Finite-Element Analysis
Atamturktur, S.; Sevim, B.
This article discusses a combined analytical and experimental study on the nonlinear seismic performance of two Guastavino-style masonry domes located in the United States. The seismic performance of these masonry domes is simulated with nonlinear finite-element (FE) models. To support the assumptions and decisions established during the development of the FE models, the vibration response of the domes is measured on-site and systematically compared against the numerical model predictions. Linear FE models are developed that are in close agreement with the measured natural frequencies and in visual agreement with the measured mode shapes. Next, these linear models are extended into the nonlinear range by incorporating the Drucker-Prager damage criterion. Finally, nonlinear FE models are used to assess the performance of these two domes under seismic loadings obtained from the 1940 El Centro earthquake acceleration records. The predicted displacements and internal tensile stress levels are used to make inferences about the potential behavior of these two buildings under the selected earthquake load.
