Nutritional value, heavy metal contamination and health risk assessment of Phalangium opilio Linnaeus, 1758 as a potential edible arachnid

Gürmeriç, Hüseyin Ender; Kurt, Pınar; Ürkek, Bayram

Edible insects and arachnids have increasingly been recognised as alternative food sources. The aim of the study was to evaluate the harvestman species Phalangium opilio (P. opilio) Linnaeus, 1758 as a new edible species. In this research, some chemical properties, fatty acid and mineral composition of the P. opilio were investigated. Additionally, the heavy metal contamination and its health risk assessment were evaluated. The fat and protein contents of the samples were 1.18% and 14.07%, respectively. The P. opilio had unsaturated fatty acids such as myristoleic, palmitoleic, linoleic and oleic acids. The P. opilio was analyzed for K, Mg, Na, Ca, Fe, Zn, Al, Mn, Se contents, estimated daily intake and contributions to the recommended daily mineral intake were calculated. The heavy metals detected in the P. opilio were Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, As, Cr, Co and Ag. The Cd had the highest target hazard quotient value (2.16). The hazard index value of the P. opilio was 3.32 and it had a potential health risk level. Consequently, although P. opilio exhibited favourable nutritional properties, the THQ value for Cd and the cumulative HI value exceeded the recommended safety threshold, indicating a potential non-carcinogenic health risk associated with its consumption. Accordingly, considering the detected heavy metal levels and associated health risk indices, the consumption of wild-collected P. opilio should be approached with caution. © Hüseyin Ender Gürmeriç et al., 2026. Yılmaz, Yonca; Medetalibeyoğlu, Hilal; Kapancık, Serkan; Tüzün, Burak; Lukšič, Miha; Aslan, Rukiye; Topal, Fevzi; Kocyigit, Umit M.; Yüksek, Haydar; Harmankaya, Ahmet

A series of novel 1,2,4-triazole-based Mannich bases was designed, synthesized, and evaluated for biological and theoretical properties. Schiff base intermediates (C1–6) were prepared by condensing 4-benzoxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde with various 3-substituted-4-amino-4,5-dihydro-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-ones. Mannich reactions with formaldehyde and 2,6-dimethylmorpholine produced six target compounds (D1–6). Structures were confirmed using spectroscopic techniques. Following structural confirmation, the compounds showed significant cytotoxicity against HT-29 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines in MTT assays. Enzyme inhibition studies demonstrated activity against glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), indicating potential relevance to cancer metabolism. Moderate acetylcholinesterase inhibition was observed, with IC50 values from 56.81 to 182.40 µM. Antimicrobial testing showed that D1, D3, D4, and D5 were active against selected microbial strains, while D2 and D6 were inactive. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, molecular docking, ADME/T predictions, and molecular mechanics simulations were conducted to complement the experimental findings. These computational analyses indicated favorable binding interactions and pharmacological profiles. In summary, the newly synthesized triazole-based Mannich derivatives represent promising candidates for further pharmacological investigation.

Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation added to robotic rehabilitation in patients with ischemic stroke: a randomized clinical trial

Kızıl, Ömer Dicle; Ural, İbrahim Halil; Hatık, Sefa Haktan; Özden, Ali Veysel; Aydın, Emine Büşra

Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of adding transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) to robotic rehabilitation on functional outcomes and neuromuscular activity in patients with ischemic stroke. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial employed a pre–post study design and was conducted in a hospital-based physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic. A total of 40 patients with ischemic stroke, aged 18–65 years, were randomly assigned to either a robotic rehabilitation group (RRG) or a combined vagus nerve stimulation and robotic rehabilitation group (VRRG). Spasticity, walking speed, motor function, quality of life, muscle activity, and pain were assessed at baseline and after six weeks of treatment. Results: Primary outcome measures were walking speed, motor function assessed by the Fugl–Meyer Assessment, and pain intensity. Secondary outcomes included electrophysiological measurements (H-reflex and F-wave parameters) and quality of life. Within-group analyses showed significant improvements in all outcomes in the VRRG (p < 0.05), whereas all outcomes except pain improved significantly in the RRG (p < 0.05). Between-group comparisons demonstrated greater improvements in walking speed in the VRRG compared with the RRG (mean difference − 1.84 s, 95% CI − 3.7 to − 0.7; r = 0.43; p = 0.006) and greater pain reduction in the VRRG (mean difference − 1.55, 95% CI − 2.5 to − 0.1; r = 0.30; p = 0.048). In contrast, a greater reduction in the Hmax/Mmax amplitude ratio—an electrophysiological marker of spinal excitability—was observed in the RRG. Conclusion: The findings suggest that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation combined with robotic rehabilitation may provide additional benefits in terms of walking speed and pain reduction in patients with ischemic stroke. Trial registration: The study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov on April 19, 2024. (Identifier: NCT06381089).

Thermochemical Activation of Lightweight Slag–Perlite Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS): Overcoming Aggregate Brittleness and Sulfate Degradation

    Eker, Hasan; Demir Şahin, Demet

The successful realization of a circular economy in the cement industry, coupled with a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, relies on the development of sustainable alternative binder systems. This study investigated the physicomechanical performance and sulfate resistance of composites produced by alkali activation of natural perlite and blast furnace slag. The aim of the research was to improve mechanical properties under low- and medium-alkalinity conditions (5–10 M NaOH). The samples were cured at an ambient temperature of 20 °C and then treated with heat at 60 °C. These samples were then mechanically processed and subjected to five soak–dry cycles in 5% and 10% Na2SO4 solutions. The results showed that heat treatment resulted in the formation of a dense C-A-S-H gel, increasing compressive strength approximately eightfold, from 11.64 MPa to 92 MPa. However, perlite’s porous and brittle structure limits its flexural strength to 0.27 MPa; this value is insufficient for structural applications. Under severe sulfate attack (10% Na2SO4), samples cured at ambient temperature showed a 12% mass increase in the first cycle due to solution infiltration into capillary voids. As a consequence of extensive ettringite and gypsum formation, the specimens experienced severe deterioration, resulting in a complete loss of mechanical integrity and a residual compressive strength of 0 MPa. In contrast, heat-treated samples showed limited ion diffusion due to a denser matrix and an improved aggregate interface transition zone, resulting in a 2.6% mass increase and a residual compressive strength of 5.17 MPa. Consequently, the obtained findings indicate that thermally treated alkali-activated slag–perlite composites exhibit high resistance against sodium sulfate attack and may have potential for use in specific industrial environments with high sulfate concentrations. However, the performance of these materials under more complex aggressive conditions, such as mining environments involving magnesium sulfate exposure and acidic drainage waters, should be further validated through future studies.

Impact of cooking methods on PAH formation in traditional Akçaabat meatballs

Bostan, Sinan; Gül, Abdulkadir; Karpuz, Ömer; Baltaci, Cemalettin; Yılmaz, Fırat

Akçaabat meatballs, a traditional and commercially important Turkish meat product, are widely consumed and typically prepared using high-temperature cooking methods that may promote the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different cooking techniques, including pan cooking without added oil (dry pan cooking), electric grilling, oven baking, charcoal barbecue, and hazelnut shell charcoal barbecue, on PAH formation in Akçaabat meatballs. Samples obtained from eight different producers were analyzed for selected chemical properties and PAH contents using HPLC-FLD. While basic compositional characteristics varied among samples, the most significant differences were observed in PAH levels depending on the cooking method. The sum of four priority PAHs (∑PAH4) ranged between 7.70 and 112.38 µg/kg across all treatment s. Among the cooking methods, barbecue applications (charcoal and hazelnut shell charcoal) resulted in the highest PAH levels, frequently exceeding regulatory limits. In contrast, electric grilling produced the lowest PAH concentrations and showed the highest compliance with food safety standards. These findings demonstrate that cooking method plays a critical role in PAH formation and highlight the importance of selecting appropriate cooking techniques to minimize health risks. In this context, electric grilling can be considered a safer alternative, whereas traditional charcoal-based cooking methods may pose a significant risk in terms of PAH exposure.

Isolation and Preliminary In Vitro Characterization of a Honey-Derived Bacillus licheniformis Isolate

Usta, Mehtap; Zengin, Kübra; Kara, Yakup; Nalçacıoğlu, Remziye; Demirbağ, Zihni; Yıldız, Oktay; Kolaylı, Sevgi

Background/Objectives: Despite its hostile physicochemical environment characterized by high osmotic pressure, acidic pH, and low water activity, honey serves as a unique ecological niche for resilient microorganisms. This study aimed to recover bacterial isolates from honeys of different botanical origins and to characterize the probiotic-associated properties of a honey-derived Bacillus licheniformis isolate. Methods: A total of 20 bacterial isolates were recovered from four honey samples, including two blossoms and two honeydew honeys. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the recovered isolates had taxonomic assignments consistent with Bacillus licheniformis. Because 16S rRNA sequencing does not provide sufficient resolution to establish strain-level diversity or clonality, one isolate, designated Blhoney, was selected for subsequent molecular and functional characterization. Results: In vitro assays revealed that Blhoney exhibits robust tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal stress, including extreme acidity (pH 1–3), bile salts (0.3–1%), pepsin, and pancreatin, maintaining viability for up to 24 h. Phenotypic antimicrobial testing demonstrated measurable inhibition zones for erythromycin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, ampicillin, tetracycline, gentamicin, streptomycin, and spectinomycin, whereas no measurable inhibition zones were observed for penicillin G, rifampicin, ciprofloxacin, or ceftazidime. However, MIC determination and standardized breakpoint interpretation were not performed; therefore, these findings were interpreted solely as preliminary phenotypic inhibition-zone observations. Although the isolate did not display direct antagonistic activity against the tested bacterial pathogens under experimental conditions, its persistence under the tested gastrointestinal stress conditions supports further investigation of its probiotic-associated characteristics. Conclusions: Overall, these findings indicate that the honey-derived Blhoney isolate exhibits preliminary probiotic-associated characteristics under the tested in vitro conditions. However, further strain-level genomic and safety characterization is required before its potential probiotic application can be established.

Natural (226Ra, 232Th, 40K) and artificial (137Cs) radioactivity assessment of Kırkpavli and Hazine Cave ore deposits, Gümüşhane (Türkiye): Radiological risk and material utilization perspective

    Vural, Alaaddin; Kaya, Ali

Environmental radioactivity is a critical factor for both ecological and human health risk assessment, particularly in mining regions with ongoing or historical settlement activities. This study evaluates natural and artificial radionuclide concentrations in soils from the Kırkpavli (KP) and Hazine Cave (HM) mining areas in Gümüşhane, northeastern Türkiye. Gamma spectrometry analyses were performed to measure 232Th, 226Ra, 40K, and 137Cs, and radiological risk indicators—including absorbed dose rates, annual effective dose, radium equivalent activity, hazard indices (Hex and Hin), Excess Lifetime Cancer Risk (ECLR), Activity Utilization Index (AUI), radon-related alpha index, and natural radioactivity-driven heat production (RHP)—were assessed. Results: showed spatial variability linked to lithology, with the HM site exhibiting elevated radionuclide levels in basalt-dominated units, while KP soils showed moderate values in sedimentary formations. Most radiological parameters remained below international safety limits; however, specific sampling points, particularly HM-2, exceeded thresholds, indicating potential health risks if the soils are used for local settlement, building materials, or domestic purposes. RHP analysis further identified areas of intense hydrothermal alteration correlating with higher natural radioactivity. Comparisons with international soils and rocks confirmed that the activity concentrations at both sites are comparable to or exceed global averages. These findings highlight the necessity of ongoing monitoring of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) in inhabited mining regions and provide essential data for ensuring environmental safety, sustainable land and material use, and public health protection.

Impact of soil-structure interaction on earthquake response of high-rise steel frames equipped with TMD and FTMD optimized through cloud drift optimization

Alibabaei Shahraki, Mohammad; Araz, Onur; Ahmadi, Hossein

Vibration control of tall buildings under various seismic and foundation conditions remains a critical issue in earthquake engineering. This paper investigates the performance of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Friction Tuned Mass Damper (FTMD) systems in reducing the seismic response of fixed-base and Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI) analyses of 20- and 40-storey steel moment-resisting frames. The current study uses the OpenSees software and the Cloud Drift Optimization (CDO) technique, aiming at minimizing the normalized H 2 -norm of the roof displacement. The performance of the seismic control is investigated by performing nonlinear dynamics analyses with the help of a set of 14 records, of which 7 records are far-field and the remaining ones are near-field records. Results show that both TMD and FTMD are effective in decreasing roof displacement on 20- and 40-story buildings subjected to fixed-base and SSI excitations. More precisely, results for the average reduction in roof displacement are 33.4% and 27% when FTMD is subjected to SSI loading, while those values were 10.7% and 16.5% when TMD was subjected to SSI loading in the case of 20- and 40-story buildings, respectively. Results are based on multiple variables including base shear, kinetic energy, and damping energy. The results demonstrate that the FTMD system provides superior seismic response reduction compared to the conventional TMD.

Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the impact of immersive virtual reality (IVR) interventions on enhancing mobilization in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Design A randomized, single-blinded, two-arm, parallel-group controlled trial. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted on 30 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty for the first time. Participants were divided into two groups: the intervention and control groups. The primary outcome, mobilization distance, was measured at the first postoperative mobilization using validated scales. Before mobilization, patients in the intervention group experienced a simulated walk through a tranquil forest accompanied by birdsong and meditation music via IVR goggles. Results All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon, and postoperative medical care was standardized across both groups. The intervention group demonstrated significantly greater mobilization distances and shorter initial walking times than the control group. Moreover, patients in the intervention group reported reduced postmobilization pain and expressed high satisfaction with the IVR experience. Conclusions The findings indicate that patients who experienced IVR intervention exhibited reduced postmobilization pain, increased mobilization distance, and higher satisfaction. This innovative technique has the potential to serve as a practical solution to enhance clinical improvement in various healthcare settings. Clinical Implications This study demonstrated the effectiveness of IVR-assisted mobilization in enhancing walking distance among patients undergoing knee surgery. The use of IVR presents an innovative and engaging approach to support postoperative mobilization in this patient population. Further research in this area may contribute to the development of more comprehensive and effective IVR interventions.

Serum and hepatic lipid fractions and total protein status of laying hens supplemented with tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) under different stocking densities

Kaya, Hacer; Karaalp, Musa; Kaynar, Özgür; Elmastaş, Mahfuz

High stocking density can induce metabolic disturbances in laying hens, particularly in lipid metabolism. This study evaluated the effects of dietary tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) supplementation on serum and hepatic total protein and lipid parameters in laying hens reared under different stocking densities. A total of 192 50-week-old Lohmann Brown laying hens were assigned to a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement with two stocking densities, 5 or 7 hens per cage, and four dietary tarragon treatments providing 0, 1, 5, or 10 mmol/kg feed of tarragon-derived additional antioxidant activity for 8 weeks. Serum total protein concentration was not affected by stocking density but increased with tarragon supplementation, rising from 7.5 to 8.3 g/dL. Liver total protein concentration remained unchanged. SDS-PAGE analysis of pooled treatment-group samples identified 24 serum and 39 hepatic protein bands. High stocking density altered the serum lipid profile by increasing cholesteryl ester, free fatty acid, and acylglycerol proportions, as well as total cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations, while decreasing triacylglycerol and phospholipid proportions. Tarragon supplementation increased serum cholesteryl ester and phospholipid proportions and reduced serum triacylglycerol and free fatty acid proportions, together with lower total cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations. In the liver, high stocking density increased cholesteryl ester and free cholesterol proportions and triacylglycerol concentration, whereas it decreased triacylglycerol and phospholipid proportions and total cholesterol concentration. Tarragon supplementation increased hepatic cholesteryl ester, free cholesterol, and phospholipid proportions and reduced hepatic triacylglycerol proportion and concentration. Significant stocking density × tarragon-derived additional antioxidant activity interactions were observed for serum free fatty acid and hepatic free fatty acid and free cholesterol. Overall, stocking density had a stronger effect on lipid metabolism than on total protein status.

A systematic review of studies evaluating immersive virtual reality applications to support nursing education for nursing students

Aydin, Aydanur; Güler, Sevil; Bulut, Hülya

Objectives: Virtual reality (VR)-based interventions are widely used in education. However, it is necessary to systematically examine the outcomes of immersive virtual reality (IVR) applications in nursing education, clarifying their impact on knowledge, skills, and attitudes among nursing students. Methods: This review utilized the methodological framework of the Joanna Briggs Institute. A search was conducted of the Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), Web of Science, and Scopus databases for the period from 2013 to 2023. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol informed the review and screening of the literature. The articles were assessed for eligibility via first screening by abstract review, followed by a full-text review. The first two authors reviewed the articles, assessing qualification for inclusion and evaluating the content. Data from eligible articles were analyzed and synthesized to answer the research question. Results: Of the initial 667 articles, 11 articles met the inclusion criteria for final analysis. The findings indicate that IVR applications in clinical practice positively impact nursing students, as IVR provides effective results in increasing their knowledge. Nursing educators should avoid comparing the results of students’ IVR practice with classical clinical practice. Nursing students should continue to engage in clinical practice, as it remains an essential aspect of their education. While technological applications such as IVR may be useful, they should not be used as a substitute for clinical practice. This review highlights the reported outcomes and benefits of clinical teaching methods in nursing. Conclusion: A limited number of articles were found that evaluated the education of nursing students in IVR applications. The analyzed articles found that nurse educators experienced meaningful knowledge exchange with students after IVR implementation. Further research is needed to identify effective outcomes in clinical education. It is essential to advance science to transform clinical education and use it more consciously to teach practical thinking and decision-making about patient care.

Türker, Üstün; Somoğlu, Mustafa Barış; Koç, Mustafa; Bostancı, Özgür

Background: Understanding how athletes learn and recognizing their learning preferences are important cognitive and sensory components that may support effective instructional planning in sport settings. This study aimed to adapt the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes (Visual, Aural, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic modalities) into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Methods: A total of 854 licensed athletes from individual and team sports in Türkiye participated in the study. The Turkish version of the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes was administered using a paper-based format. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics (v26) and LISREL (v8.80). Construct validity was examined using a Multitrait–Multimethod Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MTMM-CFA) approach with a correlated trait–correlated uniqueness (CTCU) specification, while reliability was assessed using internal consistency and test–retest procedures. Results: The MTMM-CFA supported the four-factor structure of the inventory, indicating an acceptable model fit and strong associations among the learning style dimensions, consistent with a multimodal learning preference profile. Internal consistency analyses yielded Kuder–Richardson 20 (KR-20) coefficients ranging from 0.574 to 0.623 across subscales, reflecting moderate reliability. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the Turkish version of the VARK Learning Style Inventory for Athletes demonstrates acceptable psychometric properties, with evidence of construct validity and moderate internal consistency. While the results support its use for assessing learning preferences among Turkish athletes, further research across different sport disciplines and age groups is recommended to strengthen there liability evidence and practical applicability. Overall, the study contributes to measurement practices in sport and exercise sciences by providing a culturally adapted instrument for examining athletes’ learning preferences.

Effects of sunlight ripening process on the biological activities of persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) peel and pulp extracts

Kardil, Uğur; Akar, Zeynep; Düzgün, Azer Özad

The aim of the study was to evaluate the biological properties of the peel and pulp extracts of persimmons, with consideration of the impact of different ripening conditions (B: on-branch ripened and S: sunlight ripened). The data demonstrated that the sunlight ripened persimmon peel (S. peel) extract exhibited a higher total phenolic and flavonoid content, with 157 and 7.3 µg/mL GAE respectively. The S. peel extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, exhibiting 1.1578 mg/mL IC50, 54.095 and 0.0262 µM Trolox equivalent (TE)/g fresh weight (FW), as determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) respectively. LC-MS/MS analysis revealed that the peel and pulp phenolic composition of persimmon ripening process different conditions changed. The activity of protocatechuic, chlorogenic, caffeic and ferulic acids identified in persimmon extracts was determined by HPLC-DAD-FRAP assay. ICP-OES analysis revealed that potassium exhibited the highest mineral content of persimmon, with values ranging from 575.680 to 2031.360 mg/kg. The S. peel extract was more inhibitory activity against bovine carbonic anhydrase (BCA) and α-glucosidase then other extracts. Moreover, the S. peel extract was found to demonstrate the highest level of antibiofilm activity, reducing the strong biofilm formation capacity of the A. baumannii isolate to negative, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The study suggests that the ripening of persimmon fruit in sunlight may increase biological activity and may be useful in the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative damage, diabetes and bacterial infections.

Nicotinamide complexes of metal(II) furan-2-carboxylates: synthesis, determination of crystal structures, Hirshfeld surface analysis, and in vitro and in silico evaluation of inhibitory properties on CA I, CA II, AChE, BChE, and GR enzymes

Nar, Merve; Senturk, Murat; Kaya, Afşin Ahmet; Öztürkkan, Füreya Elif; Kaya, Elif Çelenk; Şahin, Ertan

In this study, nicotinamide complexes of Cu2⁺, Co2⁺, and Zn2⁺ furan-2-carboxylates were synthesized, and the crystal structures of the complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The chemical composition and functional groups of the complexes were confirmed using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet–visible region (UV–Vis) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (MS). Hirshfeld surface analysis detailed the intermolecular interactions present in the crystal structures of the complexes. The complexes feature a central six-coordinate ion (Cu2⁺, Co2⁺, or Zn2⁺) located on an inversion center, which is bonded to two N atoms from nicotinamide and four O atoms from water molecules. There is a furan 2-carboxylate anion that is not coordinated with metal atoms but links to complex structures via hydrogen bonds. Within the scope of biochemical studies, the inhibitory effects of the synthesized complexes on acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), carbonic anhydrase I and II (hCA I, hCA II), and glutathione reductase (GR) enzymes were investigated by spectrophotometric methods. It was determined that the complexes, especially Complex 2, exhibited strong enzyme inhibition properties. Molecular docking analyses revealed the binding tendencies and binding energies of the complexes to the active sites of the enzymes. Complex 2 has a high binding affinity with AChE, BChE, hCA I, hCA II, and GR enzymes, and these bindings were supported by hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions. ADMET predictions showed that the complexes have toxicologically safe profiles despite their pharmacokinetic limitations, such as low gastrointestinal absorption and inability to cross the blood–brain barrier. It was determined that the risks of hepatotoxicity, carcinogenicity, immunotoxicity, and mutagenicity were low. As a result, these metal complexes are evaluated as potential therapeutic agents in the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, glaucoma, epilepsy, malaria, and cancer. The data obtained in this study emphasize the biological activities and pharmacological potential of the complexes, and it is recommended that they be supported by future in vivo studies.

Bingöl, Orhan; Çelebi, Gülin Yazıcı; Kaya, Feridun

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of tolerance on social appearance anxiety and to test the roles of emotion regulation and self-compassion as mediating psychological mechanisms in this relationship. The sample of the study consists of 647 adolescent individuals living in Turkey. The Personal Information Form, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Tolerance Scale, Self-Compassion Scale – Short Form, and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale were used in the study. Data were collected online using convenience sampling methods. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationships between the variables in the study, while regression-based mediation analysis (Process macro model 81) was used to test the mediation model examined in the study. Upon examining the findings, tolerance was positively correlated with self-compassion (r =.323, p <.001) and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r =.200, p <.001); while tolerance was negatively and statistically significantly related to maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r = -.250, p <.001) and social appearance anxiety (r = -.229, p <.001). Additionally, a positive correlation was found between self-compassion and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r =.358, p <.001); and negative and statistically significant relationships between self-compassion and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r = -.576, p <.001) and social appearance anxiety (r = -.530, p <.001). Finally, a statistically significant negative relationship was found between social appearance anxiety and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r = -.219, p <.001); and a statistically significant positive relationship was found between social appearance anxiety and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation (r =.484, p <.001). The mediation analysis, tested with 10,000 bootstrap samples at a 95% confidence interval, revealed that emotion regulation dimensions and self-compassion have a full mediating effect. The findings indicate that the tolerance factor reduces social appearance anxiety not only directly but also indirectly through emotion regulation and self-compassion. In line with these findings, it was concluded that individuals with high tolerance levels need to be supported not only through mindfulness programs but also through emotion regulation and self-compassion levels.

Organic Geochemical Properties of the Miocene Coal Seam in the Ömerler Field, Tunçbilek Basin, Western Türkiye: Implications for Depositional Environment

    Saydam Eker, Çiğdem; Köse, Yeliz

In this comprehensive study, which was conducted based on data obtained from the Ömerler Field İğdekuzu underground mine located in the Tunçbilek Basin (Kütahya/W. Turkey), the aim was to reveal the organic matter content, origin, thermal maturation level, depositional environment, and conditions of Miocene-aged coals. Coal samples collected from the underground coal mine were subjected to proximate analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis/Total organic carbon (TOC), gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis (GC–MS) of aromatic and saturated biomarkers and extraction analysis. On an air-dry basis, the average moisture (Mad), volatile matter (Vad), ash (Aad), fixed carbon (FCad) and total sulphur contents of coals are 2.79%, 33.93%, 18.71%, 44.31% and 1.40%, respectively. TOC content is so high; the highest mean TOC content is 86.75% calculated in the upper coal seam, followed by the middle seam with 85.14% and the lower seam with 79.01%. In the GC–MS of the coal samples, the n-alkane distribution varies between C12 and C36. The lowest homohopane index (HHI) value was calculated as 0.02 for OR-5, and the highest HHI value was 0.05 for TB-8. The upper coal seam sample exhibits the order of C29>C28>C27 sterane (%), and the lower and middle coal seam samples exhibit the order of C29>C27>C28 sterane (%). The coal samples under study exhibit early mature oil window behaviour according to all geochemical maturity parameters. These coals indicate a mixed organic matter of Type II/III and III kerogens, as demonstrated by medium and long-chain n-alkanes, terrestrial/aquatic organic matter ratios (TAR), aquatic plants to terrestrial plants ratios (Paq), C24 Tet/C26 Tri and C19/C23 Tri ratios, and distributions of C27–29 ααα20R, likely deposited in a paralic, oxic-dyoxic transitional environment. Although the TOC value of the Miocene-aged coal samples is so high, they have not yet reached the level of producing hydrocarbons due to low and medium hydrogen index (HI), low quality index (QI), production index (PI), and bitumen index (BI) values, but it has been evaluated that they have the potential to produce gas.

Land Subsidence Susceptibility Mapping in Semi-Arid Regions Using PS-InSAR and Tree-Based Ensemble Machine Learning: A Case Study From Çumra, Türkiye

    Bilgilioğlu, Burhan Baha

Land subsidence is an increasing environmental hazard in semi-arid agricultural basins where intensive groundwater abstraction, compressible geological units, and expanding land-use pressures interact. This study presents a PS-InSAR and machine-learning-based framework for land subsidence susceptibility mapping in the Çumra District of the Konya Closed Basin, Türkiye. A time-series PS-InSAR analysis was conducted using 172 Sentinel-1A ascending images acquired between 2018 and 2023, and 11,718 high-confidence subsidence points were extracted as the inventory dataset. Fourteen conditioning factors representing topographic, hydrogeological, lithological, environmental, and anthropogenic controls were integrated with eight tree-based ensemble models optimized using Optuna. Random Forest achieved the highest overall performance, with an accuracy of 0.9745, precision of 0.9562, recall of 0.9945, F1 score of 0.9750, and Cohen's Kappa of 0.9490, followed by Extremely Randomized Trees and XGBoost. Class-specific validation also confirmed the reliability of Random Forest in delineating the Very High Susceptibility class. Variable importance analysis identified land use, proximity to settlements, well density, and groundwater level change as the dominant predictors, emphasizing the role of groundwater-related anthropogenic pressure in subsidence development. The resulting susceptibility maps provide a spatial decision-support basis for groundwater management, land use planning, and subsidence risk mitigation.

Cin, Aynur; Coşar, Dilan Aktepe; Demirağ, Hatice

Aim This study aims to investigate the levels of artificial intelligence-related anxiety among nurses, their attitudes towards the use of AI in clinical settings, their ability to maintain humanistic approaches in nursing care, and the interrelationships among these variables. Design This study was designed as a descriptive and cross-sectional pilot study. Method The sample of the descriptive study consisted of 267 nurses working in X and Y hospitals in Gümüşhane province. The data of the research was collected between December 2023 and May 2024 using the “Nurse Introduction Form”, “Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale”, “General Attitude Scale towards Artificial Intelligence” and “Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing”. Results Total “Artificial Intelligence Anxiety Scale” mean scores were found to be higher in nurses who were women, and had more than five years of working experience ( p < 0.05). It was determined that the total “General Attitude Scale Towards Artificial Intelligence” score averages of nurses working in surgical clinics were higher than those working in pediatric clinics ( p < 0.05). Positive “General Attitude Scale Towards Artificial Intelligence” mean scores were higher in nurses who had a postgraduate degree, worked in a surgical clinic, and had five years or less experience ( p < 0.05). Again, the total mean of the “ Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing “ was higher in nurses who had a bachelor's degree or less, and worked in management and surgery clinics ( p < 0.05). Conclusion It was found that nurses' artificial intelligence anxiety, general attitudes towards artificial intelligence, and ability to act humanistally varied according to some sociodemographic characteristics.

Critical Success Factors for Building Resilience in Circular Supply Chains of Electric Vehicle Batteries: Evidence from an Emerging Country

Erol, Ismail; Oztel, Ahmet; Peker, Iskender; Ar, Ilker Murat; Searcy, Cory

Given the global expansion of electric vehicles (EVs), decision makers in developing and emerging countries must address important challenges across EV battery supply chains (EVBSCs) toward circularity. For example, batteries usually make up about 40% of an EVs’ value, and the race to achieve net zero emissions will further underscore the critical need for vital minerals and metals, such as lithium, cobalt, and graphite, necessary to make batteries. Stakeholders routinely question the resilience of circular (C) EVBSCs worldwide, from mining valuable materials to manufacturing the batteries necessary to support the widespread deployment of EVs. Identifying and investigating critical success factors (CSFs) of any system is a necessary step in achieving its targets. Little research, however, has been performed to investigate the CSFs for building resilience in EVBSCs, particularly those focused on building a circular supply chain. The goal of this research is, therefore, to systematically scrutinize the CSFs of resilient C-EVBSCs in Türkiye. To this end, a decision framework applying inter-valued neutrosophic ISM-MICMAC is proposed. Based on expert opinions, an application of the decision framework finds that effective government policies, directives, and incentives and well-established dynamic capabilities, are key driving CSFs to building resilience in a C-EVBSC.
