- MakaleAçık Erişim2024The Effect of Conjunctiva-Müller Muscle Resection on Tear Oxidative Stress Levels in Patients with Blepharoptosis
Sert, Seda; Araca, Ceyhun; Mergen, Burak; Ekmekçi, Ozlem Balca
Objectives: To examine changes in tear oxidative stress levels and tear film functions in patients with blepharoptosis and dermatochalasis following conjunctiva-M & uuml;ller muscle resection (CMMR) and blepharoplasty surgeries. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 32 healthy controls and 62 patients with blepharoptosis or dermatochalasis. CMMR surgery was performed in 20 eyes and upper blepharoplasty was performed in 42 eyes. Tear oxidative stress markers (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG3 and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal [4-HNE3) were quantified by enzyme -linked immunosorbent assay and tear film functions were evaluated preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively. The same assessments were performed in the control group at the same time points. Results: Preoperative tear 8-OHdG and 4-HNE levels were lower in healthy controls (52.8 +/- 13.5 ng/mL and 27.8 +/- 6.4 ng/mL, respectively) compared to patients with dermatochalasis (86.1 +/- 37.2 ng/mL and 29.8 +/- 11.1 ng/mL, respectively) and blepharoptosis (90.4 +/- 39.3 ng/mL and 43.1 +/- 4.2 ng/mL, respectively) (p<0.001). 8-OHdG levels were increased at 1 month after CMMR, while both markers were decreased 1 month postoperatively in the blepharoplasty group (p=0.034). Schirmer 1 and OSDI scores did not change throughout the visits in both patient groups, but a temporary decrease in tear break-up time (TBUT) was observed after CMMR (p=0.017). Conclusion: Dermatochalasis and blepharoptosis were associated with higher tear oxidative stress levels. CMMR surgery caused a temporary decrease in TBUT scores and an increase in oxidative stress in the first postoperative month.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Isometric Shoulder and Hip Strength Impact on Throwing Velocity and Reactive Strength
Kayhan, Recep Fatih; Terzi, Esranur; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Ceylan, Halil Ibrahim; Biyikli, Turker
The aim of the study is to examine relationships between shoulder extension-flexion and internal-external rotation strength of professional male handball players with throwing velocity, and the hip extension-flexion strength with horizontal and vertical reactive strength index. Fifteen professional male handball players participating in 1 st League matches took part in the study. The results showed that isometric shoulder flexion and extension strength significantly predicted stable throwing velocity (r (2 )=between 0.27-0.73) and dynamic throwing velocity (r( 2) =between 0.30-0.62). In addition, isometric internal and external rotation strength significantly predicted stable throwing velocity (r (2) =between 0.32-0.54) and dynamic throwing velocity (r (2) =between 0.31-0.44). Moreover, isometric hip extension and flexion strength significantly predicted vertical reactive strength index (r( 2) =between 0.31-0.45) and horizontal reactive strength index (r (2) =between 0.26-0.42). In conclusion, it was observed that shoulder strength has an enhancing effect on handball players' throwing velocity, while hip strength is a determining factor for the reactive strength index. In this context, it is assumed that shoulder weakness during throwing will affect the accuracy and velocity of throwing by disrupting the angular momentum, while weakness in the hip during the jump phase of the throwing motion will negatively affect the explosive power by limiting stabilization during landing.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1The Association Between Glycemic Variability and Mortality in Critically Ill Patients: A Multicenter Prospective Observational Study
Emgin, Omer; Yavuz, Mehmet; Sahin, Adem; Günes, Murat; Eser, Mustafa; Yavuz, Tunzala; Kökalan, Damla; Ergün, Bisar; Rollas, Kazim; Çakirgöz, Mensure Yilmaz
Background: Glycemic variability (GV) is a prevalent and significant condition observed in critically ill patients. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between early glycemic variability parameters and 28-day mortality in critically ill patients. Methods: A multicenter, prospective, and observational study was performed at five tertiary intensive care units (ICUs) in Turkey. All patients who had more than six blood glucose level (BGL) measures per 24 h were included. The parameters of GV including the SD, MGL, MGD (the difference between the maximal and minimal glucose level), and the CV (the percentage of SD to the MGL) in the first 24 h were recorded. Results: A total of 578 eligible patients were enrolled in the study, of whom 43.6% were women. The mean age of the patients was 68.09 +/- 16.62 years. Overall mortality was 31.5% (n = 182). The glycemic parameters of the CV, SD, and MGD were significantly higher in the non-survivor group than in the survivor group (p = 0.040, 0.006, and 0.002, respectively). The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the CV (OR 1.023; 95% CI 1.004-1.042; p = 0.017) was an independent factor that increased mortality. Spearman's rho correlation analysis revealed a strong (r:0.871) and statistically significant correlation (p < 0.001) between the CV and MGD. Conclusions: The CV calculated within the first 24 h of ICU admission is independently associated with 28-day mortality. The MGD is correlated with the CV and is maybe a practical tool to predict increased risk of mortality at the bedside. However, further studies are needed to establish the independent association of the MGD with mortality.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024A NEW LOGARITHMIC TYPE ESTIMATORS FOR ANALYSIS OF NUMBER OF AFTERSHOCKS USING POISSON DISTRIBUTION
Zaman, Tolga; Iftikhar, Soofia; Sozen, Caglar; Sharma, Prayas
Earthquake is a fierce and unavoidable natural disaster. The study of aftershocks following an earthquake provides a comprehensive understanding of seismic activity, making it an important area of research. Although it is important to mention that the use of the Poisson distributed population, to estimate the mass mean of rare events such as earthquakes, has been little studied in the literature. In this context, this study proposes a new class of logarithmic type ratio estimators for estimating the mean of a Poisson distributed population in a simple random sampling without replacement. The proposed estimators are obtained using the logarithmic transformation of the ratio estimator, and the expressions for the mean square error (MSE) are also derived to the first order of approximation. The study demonstrates that the proposed logarithmic type estimators are more efficient than the existing estimators, both theoretically and empirically. The Empirical evidence from a real data study conducted using earthquake data from Turkey confirms the superiority of the proposed estimators over the existing estimators. The study provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners working with Poisson distributed populations and requiring ratio estimators using simple random sampling without replacement.

In this study, lavender essential oil (LEO) was added to ice creams as ingredient at 0, 0.02, 0.05 and 0.1% ratios. Some physicochemical, viscosity, rheological, colorimetric, sensory properties, and pathogen inhibition, including L. monocytogenes ATCC 7644 and S. aureus ATCC 29213, of the ice cream samples with the LEO were investigated. It was determined that the melting rate of the ice creams with the LEO was lower (P<0.05) and the overrun values were higher (P<0.05) than the control sample. The highest L* and a* values were determined in the control samples and the sample with 0.1% LEO, respectively. While C* value of the sample with 0.02% LEO was higher than the other samples (P<0.05), the highest white index (WI) value was determined in the control and the sample with 0.01% LEO. The sample containing 0.01% LEO had the highest viscosity values at 20 and 50 rpm. It was determined that there was no statistically significant difference in the consistency coefficients of the samples (P>0.05) and all samples had pseudolplastic flow. The control sample had the highest sensory score, followed by the sample with 0.02% LEO. It was determined that the LEO addition only had a decreasing effect on the count of S. aureus ATCC 29213.

Yaprak, Busranur; Gedikli, Eyup; Bingöl, Ozkan; Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur
Gait recognition is a biometrics-based computer vision process used to identify people based on their walking styles. Compared to other types of biometrics, gait offers a more advantageous recognition process as it does not require high-resolution and close-range images and obtains without contact. But besides this, gait biometrics is highly affected by cross-view variation, and under this variation recognition performance decreases significantly. In this study, performance evaluations of fine-tuned VGG-16 and ResNet-50 deep CNN networks on the cross-view gait recognition problem are performed. For this purpose, Gait energy images (GEI) and Silhouettes obtained from CASIA-B, the most comprehensive data set in gait recognition, are given as input to the networks. The experimental results showed that the VGG-16 network achieved higher recognition rates in cross-view gait recognition.

Eraslan, Selim; Hatipoglu, Ilter Kutlu; Ocak, Fatih; Isik, Fatih; Zeybek, Halil Ibrahim
In this study, the building-ground relationship in the areas affected by the February 6 Kahramanmaras earthquakes was determined, and the risk of building collapse in future earthquakes was analyzed. Remote sensing techniques determined the collapsed building-soil relationship, and the frequency ratio method was applied by utilizing Geographic Information Systems techniques to assess the risk of collapse in earthquakes. According to the research results, 84% of the collapses occurred in flat areas. On the other hand, 49.7% of the collapses occurred in the 0-500 m elevation range. In particular, it was determined that 46% (110.8 km(2)) of the collapsed buildings occurred on alluvial land belonging to the Quaternary period. According to the earthquake frequency analysis of the total 108,812 km(2) area considered in this study, 43.72% of the area is at the Risky level, indicating that a large part of the region is at significant earthquake risk. Moreover, Hatay, Adana, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa, Kahramanmaras, and Malatya are the provinces where the risk of collapse of buildings in an earthquake is high. These results reveal the necessity of analyzing by considering many criteria in determining residential areas in provinces at risk of earthquakes.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2024AN EFFICIENT FAMILY OF RATIO TYPE ESTIMATORS FOR SIMPLE RANDOM SAMPLING
Yadav, Subhash Kumar; Arya, Diksha; Koc, Tuba; Zaman, Tolga
The study provides an enhanced estimation of the population mean using known information on an auxiliary variable. An enhanced class of estimators is suggested for the same. The proposed estimator's bias and mean squared error (MSE) are calculated up to the first order of approximation. The optimum values of the characterizing constants are obtained by minimizing the MSE of the proposed estimator. The minimum MSE and the bias values are achieved by optimising the characterizing scalar. The MSE of the proposed estimator has also been compared both conceptually and empirically with the MSEs of competing estimators. Real and simulated data sets are adopted to verify the theoretical prerequisites for the proposed estimator's greater efficiency over competing estimators. The most efficient estimator is recommended for practical utility in different areas of applications and the suggested estimator filfills the requirement.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024The Relation between Corruption and Tax Revenues: An Assessment of Transitional economies
Setürk, Nazli Keyifli; Bayraktar, Yuksel; Özyilmaz, Ayfer
Corruption affects many economic, political, and social indicators directly and indirectly. One of the economic costs of corruption is a decrease in tax revenues. In societies where corruption is high, administrators taking bribes for excess revenue may reduce tax administration performance. Therefore, corruption and taxes are closely related to each other. This study analyzes the impact of corruption on different tax types in 6 selected transition economies (Estonia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Latvia and Slovak Republic) in the 1998-2021 and Bootstrap Panel Granger causality method. According to this study, there is unidirectional causality from personal income tax to corruption in Slovakia, from corporate tax and VAT to corruption in Poland, from VAT and SCT to corruption in Hungary, and from VAT to corruption in Latvia. Additionally, there is a bidirectional causal relationship from corruption to personal income tax in Poland and from corruption to corporate tax in the Czech Republic and Hungary, but there is no causal relationship between corruption and VAT and SCT. Personal income and corporate taxes, which require a strong relationship between tax administration and taxpayers, are more affected by corruption than taxes such as VAT and SCT.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2024THE CAUSALITY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CREDIT DEFAULT SWAPS (CDS) AND PORTFOLIO INVESTMENTS: THE CASE OF TÜRKİYE
Küçükosman, Asiye; Uzun, Sumeyye
This study examines the causality relationship between portfolio investments and credit default swaps (CDS) in T & uuml;rkiye. Analysing the dynamics between portfolio investments and CDS premiums, two important variables for financial markets is critical to understanding how risk perception and investment decisions are affected. While portfolio investments are generally considered an indicator of the confidence of foreign investors in the country's economy, CDS premiums are an important risk measure that reflects the country's debt risk and the risk perception of market participants. In this context, examining the relationships between the two variables contributes to the understanding of the effects of investor behavior and risk perception on macroeconomic indicators in financial markets. In the study, the Granger causality test was applied using data from the period 2014Q1-2024Q1. The results obtained show that CDS premiums have a significant and unidirectional causal effect on portfolio investments. Increases in CDS premiums increase investors' risk perception and lead to a decrease in portfolio investments. On the other hand, no causal effect of portfolio investments on CDS premiums was found. These findings emphasize the importance of risk management in terms of portfolio investments in T & uuml;rkiye and reveal that CDS premiums play a role in investor decisions.

İncele - BildiriAçık Erişim2024A Study on the Segmentation and Classification of Diabetic Retinopathy Images Using the K-Means Clustering Method
Incir, Ramazan; Bozkurt, Ferhat
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a retinal disease caused by diabetes, representing one of the most prevalent causes of vision loss affecting millions of people worldwide. Swift detection and treatment of this condition are crucial for preventing the disease. Various deep learning and machine learning algorithms have been employed for disease detection and classification, often overlooking the data preprocessing stage. In the data preprocessing phase of this study, segmentation of important lesions, such as hard exudates, was conducted using the K-Means clustering method. The identified lesions were highlighted on the original images. The resulting dataset was then classified using pre-trained architectures, namely EfficientNetV2-M, ResNet50, MobileNet, and DenseNet121. After training on the APTOS dataset, the EfficientNetV2-M model achieved an accuracy of 95.16%. The classification results indicated the contribution of the lesion highlighting process during data preprocessing to the overall classification accuracy.

Topal, Mehmet Hanefi; Simsek, Kubra; Baspinar, Adem
This study aims to identify the social and cognitive factors that influence individual-level earthquake preparedness among Istanbul residents by using an extended model that incorporates earthquake risk perception within the framework of social cognitive theory (SCT). A survey of 411 participants was conducted, and data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings strongly support the SCT assertions, revealing that social factors (such as social trust and subjective norms) and cognitive factors (including outcome expectations and self-efficacy) are key predictors of earthquake risk perception. However, earthquake preparedness behavior was found to be more closely associated with cognitive factors, particularly self-efficacy and risk perception, with subjective norms being the only social factor influencing preparedness behavior. These results that policymakers and practitioners should focus on disaster education, awareness, and participation to promote individual preparedness and mitigate disaster risk.

Liver fibrosis is a common, progressive disease that affects millions of patients worldwide. In this study, it was aimed at investigating the effect of white tea on liver fibrosis in an in-vivo environment by creating an experimental liver fibrosis model on rats. In this study, an experimental liver fibrosis model was created with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in Sprague-Dawley rats to investigate the effect of white tea on liver fibrosis. Rats are treated with CCl4 (1 mL/kg) to constitute the liver fibrosis model. White tea was given ad libitum with drinking water. As a result of the study, liver tissue hydroxyproline levels were found to be significantly lower (p = .001) in the white tea group. Histopathologically, it was found that the liver tissue histopathological damage score (LHDS) and fibrosis scoring were significantly lower (p < .001) in the white tea group. However, although it was not statistically significant in the group given white tea, compared with the fibrosis group, it was found that the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the liver tissues was lower, the glutathione (GSH) level was higher, and the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were lower. The study explained the effect of white tea on liver fibrosis and suggested that white tea might be beneficial in reducing the progression of liver fibrosis.
