A slab detachment and delamination model for the generation of Carboniferous high-potassium I-type magmatism in the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: The Kose composite pluton

    Dokuz, Abdurrahman

The Hercynian Kose composite pluton (KCP) is located in the Eastern Pontides, Turkey, and consists of two units of high-K calc-alkaline, primarily peraluminous granites: (i) the internal body, and (ii) the external body. The internal body, which was emplaced at 322-318 Ma ((40)Ar/(39)Ar ages on biotite and hornblende, respectively), displays a wide compositional range (49-71 wt.% SiO(2)) and contains several lithologies: hybrid equigranular rocks, microgranular magmatic enclaves, mafic dikes, porphyry dikes and mylonites. The external body, which was emplaced at 306.7 Ma ((40)Ar/(39)Ar age on K-feldspar), consists exclusively of monzogranite (> 71 wt.% SiO(2)). Field relationships, mineralogy, major- and trace element geochemistry, and initial Sr-Nd isotope values (I(sr)= 0.70821 to 0.71002, e(Nd)(t) = -6.6 to -8.0) show that the internal body was differentiated and evolved by crystal fractionation and magma mixing processes. The end-members of the mixing process were a mafic rock and a felsic rock. Mafic magma was derived from a relatively deep-seated (25-30 km) crustal storage reservoir, not directly from the mantle, and underwent significant differentiation by fractional crystallization and crustal contamination before mixing. In addition, these magma storages probably supplied the additional heat necessary to initiate crustal melting. Some of the additional heat may have also been released by the radiogenic decay of heat producing elements. Eventually, the existing felsic magma from the melting of K-bearing meta-greywackes was raised to its emplacement level at a depth of similar to 10-16 km. After partial crystallization, it was sporadically intruded by modified mafic magma from the deeper crustal reservoir to generate hybrid rocks. The hybrid rocks were then elevated to a shallower depth by normal faults during the collapse of the orogen and erosion. Mylonites that were later overprinted by pseudotachylites are typically constrained to the internal body and are regarded as markers of this event. The external body is characterized by a significantly less radiogenic and limited range of Sr-Nd isotope values (I(sr)= 0.70639 to 0. 70792, e(Nd)(t) = -4.4 to -6.5) than those of the internal body and a lack of rocks documenting the open system differentiation processes. Fractional crystallization is the exclusive process responsible for the elemental range within the body. The rocks also contain less biotite relative to those of the internal body. All these involve less K-bearing mid-crustal rocks (orthogneisses) in their source, which was probably located at depths near the lower crust. The absence of purely lower crustal-derived melts can be explained by the removal of this type of material during the formation of the parental melt. This melt later ascended to its emplacement level at a depth of around similar to 5-10 km and cut the hybrid rocks of the internal body and regional metamorphic rocks that had been raised previously due to ongoing erosion. The melt that injected into the cracks of the internal body crystallized into porphyries because there was not enough time for the entire crystallization of magma. The data presented here indicate that late Early Carboniferous and Late Carboniferous magmatism occurred in a collisional setting. Slab detachment and subsequent delamination seem to be the most plausible mechanisms for the generation of the Hercynian high-K calc-alkaline magmatism in the Eastern Pontides, Turkey. Abrasion Resistance of Cement Mortar with Different Pozzolanic Compositions and Matrices

    Yetgin, Sukru; Çavdar, Ahmet

Abrasion of concrete occurs due to scraping, rubbing, skidding, or sliding of objects on its surface. The abrasion resistance of concrete is influenced by a number of factors, such as compressive strength, surfacing finish, aggregate properties, types of hardeners, and curing. The main objective of this study is to determine the effects of the pozzolanic compositions and matrix structure (or voids) on the abrasion resistance of cement mortars. In this study, the mortars produced with cement samples with seven different compositions and varied with an air-entraining agent were subjected to the abrasive effects. Several examples of mortars were evaluated using samples cured for six different periods throughout 1 year. This study is supported by thin section investigations, in addition to being subjected to the basic tests, such as compression, flexure, and abrasion. The Bohme apparatus was used during abrasion tests. To summarize the most important findings from this study, a compact cement matrix is more effective against abrasive effects than mineral additives.

Thermodynamic, performance and emission investigation of a diesel engine running on dimethyl ether and diethyl ether

    Sezer, Ismet

This study investigates the use of dimethyl ether and diethyl ether in diesel engines as alternative fuels. A direct injection diesel engine was simulated via a thermodynamic cycle model for investigation. Thermodynamic and performance parameters besides emissions determined and compared for diesel, dimethyl ether and diethyl ether fuels at two different states. The results showed that dimethyl ether and diethyl ether presented a lower cylinder temperature and pressure, and thus a lower engine performance than diesel fuel for the equal injection conditions. The brake power declines about 32.1% and 19.4% at 4200 rpm while brake specific fuel consumption increases about 47.1% and 24.7% at 2200 rpm for dimethyl ether and diethyl ether, respectively. Engine performance for dimethyl ether and diethyl ether extensively improves for the same equivalence ratio condition, but a more amount of fuel is needed about 64% for dimethyl ether and 32% for diethyl ether. The gains in the brake power by dimethyl ether and diethyl are about 13.6% and 6% at 4200 rpm compared to diesel fuel. The brake specific fuel consumption is also higher about 43.5% for dimethyl ether and 23.6% for diethyl ether than diesel fuel. The brake thermal efficiency for dimethyl ether and diethyl is generally better than diesel fuel. The lower carbon dioxides are obtained by dimethyl and diethyl ethers at all conditions, while carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide are slightly higher for dimethyl and diethyl ethers at equal equivalence ratio condition. Finite element model calibration effects on the earthquake response of masonry arch bridges

Sevim, Baris; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Altunisik, Ahmet Can; Atamtürktür, Sezer; Birinci, Fatma

The focus of this paper is to illustrate the importance of model calibration and in situ vibration testing by comparing the finite element model predictions of the earthquake response of the two historical arch bridges, Osmanli and Senyuva, before and after model calibration. The three-dimensional finite element models of these two arch bridges, built in the ANSYS finite element program, are used to predict bridge dynamic characteristics, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Following the analytical study, ambient vibration tests were conducted to experimentally obtain dynamic characteristics of these two bridges. During ambient vibration tests, accelerometers were placed at several points on the bridge to collect the vibration response due to natural and operational excitation sources. Enhanced frequency domain decomposition and stochastic subspace identification techniques were used to extract the experimental natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Finite element models of the two arch bridges were adjusted such that the model predictions reproduce the ambient vibration test results with increased fidelity. The behavior of the masonry arch bridges under earthquake excitation recorded during the Erzincan Earthquake in 1992 is simulated by both the initial and adjusted finite element models. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of model calibration and ambient vibration testing. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Weight minimization of trusses with genetic algorithm

Dede, Tayfun; Bekiroglu, Serkan; Ayvaz, Yusuf

This study is concerned with encoding types such as value encoding and binary encoding for continuous and discrete optimization with a GA, which is coded in FORTRAN and considers stress and displacement constraints, in view of weight minimization of truss structures. Moreover, when continuous optimization is performed, the challenge of huge search space due to the effort of considering continuous set of design variables is overcame by a mechanism introduced as restricted range approach (RRA) in this study. In comparison with the literature, it is concluded that the program developed in this study can be effectively used in the weight minimization of truss structures. It is also came to the conclusion that value encoding overcomes the adverse effects of Hamming-cliff, and that value encoding requires less computer memory and time, never destroys the fit chromosome. Assessment of natural radioactivity and mass attenuation coefficients of brick and roofing tile used in Turkey

    Damla, N.; Cevik, U.; Kobya, A. I.; Celik, A.; Celik, N.; Yildirim, I.

In this study the distribution of natural radionuclides ((226)Ra, (232)Th, (40)K) in brick and roofing tile samples commonly used as building materials in Turkey was measured by using gamma spectrometry. The activity concentrations, radium equivalent activities (Ra(eq)), representative level index, indoor absorbed dose rate in air values and annual effective dose due to the intake of the above-mentioned radionuclides in the brick and roofing tile samples were estimated to assess the radiation hazard for people living in dwellings made of the materials studied. The measured average activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K were 34 +/- 14, 34 +/- 13 and 462 +/- 175 Bq.kg(-1), respectively, for brick samples. For roofing tile, the average activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K were measured to be 34 +/- 14, 33 +/- 12 and 429 +/- 161 Bq.kg(-1), respectively. The concentrations for these natural radionuclides were compared with the reported data of other countries. The Ra(eq) values of all samples were lower than the limit of 370 Bq.kg(-1), equivalent to a gamma dose of 1.5 mSv.a(-1) recommended by OECD. This study shows that the measured brick and roofing tile samples do not pose any significant source of radiation hazard and are safe to be used as building materials. Moreover, the experimental mass attenuation coefficients (mu/rho) of brick and roofing tile samples were determined in the energy range 80-1332 keV using the gamma ray transmission method. The experimental mass attenuation coefficients were compared with theoretical values obtained using XCOM. It was found that the computed values and the experimental results of this work are in good agreement with those reported in the literature. The chemical compositions and structural analysis (XRD) of the brick and roofing tile samples are also presented. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Finite element model updating effects on nonlinear seismic response of arch dam-reservoir-foundation systems

Bayraktar, Alemdar; Sevim, Baris; Altunisik, Ahmet Can

This paper investigates the effects of finite element model updating on nonlinear seismic response of arch dam-reservoir-foundation systems. The highest arch dam in Turkey named Berke is selected for the numerical and experimental applications. Firstly, 3D finite element model of Berke Dam was constituted using an ANSYS software. In the analytical modeling, arch dam-reservoir-foundation interaction is represented by Lagrangian approach. Then ambient vibration tests were conducted to dam for four days, and experimental dynamic characteristics were estimated using an Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique. Experimental characteristics are compared with those of analytical obtained by the linear finite element analysis of the coupled system. Good agreement between mode shapes is observed during this comparison, though natural frequencies disagree by 15-20%. The linear finite element model of Berke Dam was updated by adjusting the material properties of the dam and foundation. By introducing the Drucker-Prager damage criterion, the updated linear finite element model was extended into an onlinear model. Nonlinear seismic behavior of Berke Dam was determined considering the acceleration record of Adana-Ceyhan, Turkey, earthquake in 1998 that occurred near the arch dam region. It is highlighted that the finite element model updating provides a significant influence on the nonlinear seismic response of arch dams. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Determination of Lactic Microflora of Kefir Grains and Kefir Beverage by Using Culture-Dependent and Culture-Independent Methods

    Kesmen, Zulal; Kacmaz, Nazife

In this study, we investigated the bacterial compositions of kefir grains and kefir beverages collected from different regions of Turkey by using culture-independent and culture-dependent methods. In the culture-independent detection, 10 different species of bacteria were detected in total by using the polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis of the 16S rRNA gene V3 region. Among these species, Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens was the most dominant one in the kefir grains, while Lactococcus lactis was found to be significantly prevalent in the kefir beverages. In the culture-dependent detection, the primary differentiation and grouping of the isolates from kefir beverages and kefir grains were performed using repetitive sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) fingerprinting, and the results were validated by 16S rDNA full-length sequencing. According to the results of culture-dependent methods, the most frequently isolated species were L. lactis, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, and Lactobacillus kefiri, respectively. Only 3 species, which are L. lactis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Streptococcus thermophilus, were detected with both culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. This study showed that the combination of both methods is necessary for a detailed and reliable investigation of microbial communities in kefir grains and kefir beverages. Practical Application Due to their artisan- and region-dependent microflora, kefir products can be a source of interesting lactic acid bacteria, either new taxa or strains with specific functional properties, which might be used for the development of new starter cultures and innovative food products. Therefore, an increasing demand exists for new strains that show desirable effects on the product characteristics Artisan dairy products are a candidate source of such microorganisms. For this reason, in this study, the bacterial compositions of kefir grains and kefir beverages obtained from different regions of Turkey were studied using culture-dependent and culture-independent molecular methods.

Microwave-assisted synthesis and characterization of novel symmetrical substituted 19-membered tetrathiadiaza metal-free and metallophthalocyanines and investigation of their biological activities

Nas, Asiye; Kaya, Elif Celenk; Kantekin, Halit; Sökmen, Atalay; Çakir, Volkan

This work reports on a new symmetrically substituted metal-free phthalocyanine and its transition metal complexes which were prepared by a condensation of N,N'-[propan-1,3-diilbis(tiyoetan-2,1-diil)]bis(4-methylbenzenesulfonamid) (1) and 1,2-bis(2-iodomercaptoethyl)-4,5-dicyanobenzene (2) with NiCl(2), ZnCl(2), CoCl(2), CuCl(2), and PbO salts in 2-(dimethylamino) ethanol, respectively. The phthalocyanines bearing thia and aza donor atoms at the peripheral position were characterized by IR, UV-Vis, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, Mass spectra, and elemental analysis data. The thermal behaviors of 4-9 were investigated by TG/DTA. Novel phthalocyanines were also investigated for enlightening their possible biological activities by employing antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal), antineoplastic and antioxidative assays. Of all tested, four samples exhibited antimicrobial activity against test microorganisms, among which, Branhamella catarrhalis was the most sensitive one with a MIC value around 0.312 mg/mL followed by a yeast, Candida albicans (MIC. 0.625 mg/mL). Due to their colored nature, the samples were found not to be applicable for antioxidative and antineoplastic assays. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The Creative Destruction of Economic Development: The Schumpeterian Entrepreneuer

    Basilgan, Muslum

The subject of the entrepreneur in economic theory has mostly been examined in terms of development. Schumpeter, who argued that the neoclassical economic theory could not explain the powers of the economic change due to its static base, took a different position by arguing the necessity of a dynamic theory. Schumpeter identified the entrepreneur as essential element of the dynamic theory of economic change. To Schumpeter, the major role of the entrepreneur is to realize new combinations or innovations that ensure economic change. The primary objective of this study is to explore the individual (psychological) and leadership (sociological) characteristics of the Schumpeterian entrepreneur, who leads to creative destruction via the new combinations in the capitalist system: to put forth his difference from other economic actors and to demonstrate his role in the future (the collapse) of capitalism.

Effects of backfill on seismic behavior of rectangular tanks

Livaoglu, Ramazan; Cakir, Tufan; Dogangun, Adem; Aytekin, Mustafa

The reliability and/or stability of the lifeline structures against failure under seismic loads are of critical concern, and must be studied carefully. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the commonly encountered backfill effects on the dynamic response of rectangular tanks. However, only the exterior wall of the tank which interacts with both the backfill and fluid is tackled, as each part of the structure shows considerable differences in terms of both the load bearing mechanisms and the geometrical and positional differences. Finite element analyses are employed, taking into consideration the fluid-wall-backfill interaction. The analyses are conducted to observe whether or not both backfill and wall behavior can be affected by variation of the internal friction angle. For that purpose, some comparisons are made on vertical displacements of the backfill, roof displacements, stress responses, etc., by means of internal friction angle variations of the backfill from 25 degrees to 40 degrees. Consequently, it is observed that the variations on maximum vertical displacements are affected considerably. In contrast, the maximum stress responses are affected partially. However, the inertial effects of the backfill show that pseudo-static approximations may be insufficient to understand the dynamic behavior of the backfill-wall-fluid system. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Development of hydropower energy in Turkey: The case of Coruh river basin

Akpinar, Adem; Kömürcü, Murat Ihsan; Kankal, Murat

The main objective in doing the present study is to investigate the sustainable development of hydropower plants in the Coruh river basin of Turkey, which is least problem river of Turkey in respect to international cooperation as compared with Turkey's other trans-boundary waters. Initial studies concerning the hydropower production potential in Coruh basin had been carried out by Turkish authorities in the late 1960s. Total installed power capacity and annual average energy generation of 37 dams and run of river (without storage) hydropower plants developed at various project stages by The Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration (EiE) in Coruh basin are 3132.70 MW and 10.55 TWh/yr, respectively. Today, this generation value corresponds 6.45% of Turkey's energy consumption in 2006 while it meets 6.3% of total electricity energy production of Turkey which is equal to 167.9 TINh/yr in 2006. Besides, this potential developed at various project stages in Coruh basin will provide 24.1% of Turkey's hydroelectric energy generation being equal to 43.8 TWh/yr in 2006. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
