A Linear Signal Combination Model for UWB Applications

    Oguz, Yasin; Kaya, Haydar

Systems that use UWB technology based on communication with baseband signals of very short duration recently attract attention in communication and radar application, and thereof have been improving rapidly. Because UWB signals occupy a spectrum that is spread about very wide frequency band, one of the principal issues that need to be considered in UWB applications is the frequency allocation. In order to minimize or prevent possible distorting interferences with existing communication systems, spectral distribution of mandatory EIRP limit values has been determined by FCC in UWB applications. In this study, a linear signal combination model has been established and on mathematical expressions have been provided for production of wave forms are suitable UWB emission mask specified by FCC.

A Rebel Ayan Profile in the Tanzimat Period: The Incident of Kor Huseyin Bey of Adjara

    Yilmaz, Ozgur

Undoubtedly the most important change in Ottoman provincial administration in the 19th century was the centralizing activities taken by Mahmud II. The new government policy based on the limitation of power of ayan families who had a long history in the ottoman provinces, and on the reestablishment of central control demonstrated its impact in the Eastern Black Sea region. The region was a scene of long term struggle between governors that represents the central power and local notables in the first thirty years of the 19th century. The implementation of Tanzimat reforms in the area, as a next phase of this struggle period, created a large discontented group that their interests damaged by new Tanzimat reforms which required not only administrative but fiscal centralizing and other new applications. Although a part of this discontented group was integrated into the new system, this process was a little more painful in some part of the empire like eastern side of Trabzon Province. The period of disorders lasted between 1840-1846 in Adjara, a buffer zone on the Ottoman-Russian border, revealed an example of the own system of local notables (ayan) of Black Sea Region and showed the vulnerability and fragility of the region to the internal and external developments. In this context based on the Ottoman and French archival documents, this study aims to evaluate the emergence and causes of rebellions of Kor Huseyin Bey, who was a member of the Selim Pasazadeler, one of the most important ayan families in Adjara in 1840 and 1846 which led to a climate of anarchy and their effects on the region.

The Licese Mine and Activities of Asia Minor Mining Company in the Licese

    Saylan, Kemal

The Ottoman Empire, gave importance managing and running mines in its own territories from its foundation period. The Empire which took advantage of experience of the conquered regions improved mining industry to the competitive level with Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. But the Empire was not able to keep pace with developments since 18th century and fell behind with the industry. It consequently took some steps to stimulate the sector. So that, many native's businessmen of Muslim and non-Muslim aspired that to mines in Licese, but they could not manage a stable. In this period, European companies applied for the Licese mine in the sanjak of Karahisar-i Sarki, as well as the other mines in Anatolia. The most important of these companies is British Asia Minor Mining Company. After Asia Minor Mining Company had purchased the mine in Licese, economy of region revived. Activities of company have changed patterns of work in the region. The inhabitants who previously engaged in farming began to receive a sallary as provision of effort. However, the activities of company in the region caused to security and political problems. In this work, we deal with the status the mines in Licese and the economic, social and political effects of the mining activities of Asia Minor Mining Company in the region.

ARE OUTPUT FLUCTUATIONS TRANSITORY IN THE MENA REGION?

    Dogru, Bulent

This study analyzes the nonstationarity of per capita real GDP for 11 Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Countries over the period 1970 to 2012 using two recently developed methods. SURADF and CADF panel unit root tests allowing for cross sectional dependence are used to determine whether output fluctuations are permanent or transitory. Contrary to the traditional view of business cycle, we find econometric evidence supporting the idea that the output fluctuations in MENA region are mostly permanent. These results also emphasize that the effectiveness of stabilization policies aimed at real output by the government should be reviewed to achieve longlasting results.

Is There a Causality Relationship Between Budget Deficit and Inflation Ratio During High Inflation Period? Case of Turkey Between 1978 and 2002

    Dogru, Bulent

In this study it is analyzed whether there is a cause-and-effect relationship between inflation and budget deficit in Turkey with the annual data covering the time period between 19782002 when inflation was high and chronic. Econometric methods used in the study is based on the Johansen co-integration analysis and Granger causality connected error correction model. Empirical results suggest that in the longrun budget deficit and inflation is co-integrated, while budget deficit is Granger cause of inflation in short-run. However, inflation is not Granger cause of budget deficit. In other wordse causality is unilateral. The research also found that, response of inflation to a percentage increase in budget deficit is greater than ten percent in short-run.

A New Empirical Relation between Surface Wave Magnitude and Rupture Length for Turkey Earthquakes

    Öztürk, Serkan

Many practical problems encountered in quantitative oriented disciplines entail finding the best approximate solution to an over determined system of linear equations. In this study, it is investigated the usage of different regression methods as a theoretical, practical and correct estimation tool in order to obtain the best empirical relationship between surface wave magnitude and rupture length for Turkey earthquakes. For this purpose, a detailed comparison is made among four different regression norms: (1) Least Squares, (2) Least Sum of Absolute Deviations, (3) Total Least Squares or Orthogonal and, (4) Robust Regressions. In order to assess the quality of the fit in a linear regression and to select the best empirical relationship for data sets, the correlation coefficient as a quite simple and very practicable tool is used. A list of all earthquakes where the surface wave magnitude (Ms) and surface rupture length (L) are available is compiled. In order to estimate the empirical relationships between these parameters for Turkey earthquakes, loglinear fit is used and following equations are derived from different norms: Ms = 1.02* LogL + 5.18, for L-2 Norm regression (R-2=0.71), Ms = 1.15* LogL + 4.98, for L-1 Norm regression (R-2=0.92), Ms = 1.04* LogL + 5.15, for Robust regression (R-2=0.75), Ms = 1.25* LogL + 4.86, for Orthogonal regression (R-2=0.68), Consequently, the empirical equation given by the Least Sum of Absolute Deviations regression as Ms = 1.15* LogL + 4.98 with a strong correlation coefficient (R-2=0.92) can be thought as more suitable and more reliable for Turkey earthquakes. Also, local differences in rupture length for a given magnitude can be interpreted in terms of local variation in geologic and seismic efficiencies. Furthermore, this result suggests that seismic efficiency in a region is dependent on rupture length or magnitude.

Memetoglu, Mehmet Erdem; Kutlu, Rasim; Memetoglu, Ozge Gulsum; Kehlibar, Tamer; Yilmaz, Mehmet; Günay, Rafet; Ketenci, Bulend; Güney, Mehmet Rasit; Demirtas, Mahmut Murat; Özel, Deniz

Background - Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an indicator of platelet activation. The pathophysiology of the primary and secondary Raynaud's Phenomenon (RP) have not been completely established. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between MPV and RP. Materials and Methods - Our study was a prospective randomized study carried out from January 2011 to March 2012. The study group consisted of 39 patients: 27 (70%) patients having primary, 12 (30%) patients having secondary RP. An age-, gender-, and body mass index-matched control group consisted of 40 healthy participants. We compared the MPV in patients with RP and control participants statistically. Results - MPV of RP group was 8.79 +/- 1.37 femtoliter (fL) while MPV of control group was 8.39 +/- 1.36 fL. Comparison of MPV of RP group and control group showed no difference (p = 0.274). The mean of MPV was significantly higher among patients with secondary RP (9.76 +/- 1.68 fl) when compared with patients with primary RP (8.37 +/- 0.96 fl) (p = 0.018). Conclusion - The results of our study suggest that MPV may be used as a marker in secondary RP.

Relationship between platelet indices and international normalized ratio in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation

Arik, Osman Ziya; Özkan, Bugra; Kutlu, Rasim; Karal, Huseyin; Sahin, Durmus Yildiray; Kaypakli, Onur; Özel, Deniz; Çayil, Murat

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia and associated with adverse outcomes and increased risk for thromboembolic events. Warfarin is still the most extensively prescribed oral anticoagulant in AF to prevent ischemic complications. We aimed to determine the differences at platelet indices with warfarin usage layered by International Normalized Ratio (INR). A total of 250 patients with permanent non-valvular AF (mean age 70.2 +/- 9.1; 153 female) were divided into two groups. Group 1 included 125 patients whose INR is between 2.0 and 3.0 (called as effective'') and Group 2 included 125 patients whose INR is <2.0 (called as ineffective''). Also 123 age- and sex-matched individuals in sinus rhythm enrolled as control group (Group 3). After physical and echocardiographic examination, complete blood counts and INR were studied. There was no statistically significant difference in age, sex, co-morbidities and medications, also hemoglobin, white blood cell and platelet counts among the groups. The CHA(2)DS(2)-VASc scores were similar between Groups 1 and 2. The mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and plateletcrit (PCT) were significantly higher in Group 2 than Groups 1 and 3 and similar between Groups 1 and 3. MPV was positively correlated with PDW and PCT and also inversely correlated with INR value and platelet count. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, MPV, PDW and PCT were independent predictors of ineffectiveness of INR. The results of this study showed that MPV, PDW and PCT are increased in patients with non-valvular AF without effective warfarin treatment. Warfarin usage adjusted by INR is associated with lower values of these platelet indices, even lower as the values of subjects in sinus rhythm. MPV, PDW and PCT are independent predictors of INR ineffectiveness and seem to be useful parameters for monitoring the effectiveness of warfarin treatment.

Computer-Aided Design of Armoring Type Bridge Scour Countermeasures

Yildirim, M. Sinan; Yanmaz, A. Melih

Local scouring at piers of river bridges affects the bridge safety adversely. Proper design and implementation of scour countermeasures can limit potential bridge failures. This study deals with the description of a computer program developed in VB.Net language to design armoring type bridge scour countermeasures. This program is applied to a bridge located in Rize, Turkey. To this end, flow, bed material, and bridge structural characteristics are defined to determine the maximum depths of scour at bridge elements. Using this information, various alternatives are tested from constructional, geotechnical, hydraulics, and economic feasibility viewpoints. Based on a selection index, partially grouted riprap is found to be a suitable countermeasure for the cited project.

40Ar-39Ar age, petrography and geochemistry of the Yoncayolu Metamorphic Rocks (NE Turkey): Subduction-related metamorphism under greenschist fades conditions

    Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Aslan, Zafer

The Yoncayolu Metamorphic Rocks (YMR), exposed in the Sakarya zone (Erzincan, NE Turkey), consists mainly of greenschist rocks which are chlorite schists, muscovite-chlorite schists, metabasic rocks and lesser extent of pyhllites and calc-schists. All YMR are fine-grained, weakly foliated and often cut by quartz veins. The common mineral assemblage is chlorite+albite+epidote+quartz+/-clinozoisite+/-actinolite+/-opaques. Geochemically, protoliths of the YMR resemble calc-alkaline volcanic arc rocks. The YMR have high contents of large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and low contents of high field strength elements (HFSEs) similar to mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). (La/Lu)(CN) values are between 0.26 and 6.16. The REE patterns show slight or no Eu anomalies (Eu-CN/Eu* of 0.48 to 1.13), suggesting minor plagioglase fractionation. 40Ar-39Ar dating on plagioclases from the metabasic samples of the YMR gave ages of 100.8+/-3.4 Ma (Albian) and 94.1+/-3.3 Ma (Cenomanian), suggesting that metamorphism was related to the closure of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean. Metamorphism took place during subduction of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean between similar to 90-70 Ma. Chlorite geothermometry yielded a temperature of 320-350 degrees C and a pressure around 4 kbar. All these findings lend support for greenschist facies metamorphic conditions during the formation of the YMR.

Assessing the Impacts of Seasonal Variations on Predicting Leachate Generation in Gumushane Open Dump Using Water Balance Method

    Nas, Salim Serkan; Nas, Evin

Leachate quality varies depending on many factors such as the depth and the content of solid waste, seasonal variations in solid waste, and the duration of storage of solid waste; design and operation of storage space; geological and hydrogeological characteristics of storage area; and environmental interaction of leachate, which affect each other. One of the two major sources of leachate is the moisture content of the waste stored and the other is the mass of water entering the storage area from outside. A major part of the mass of water entering the storage area from outside is the infiltration of rain water through the storage area. The purpose of this study is to assess the seasonal variation in leachate of Gumushane (Central) open dump area using the 'water balance method' for the determination of the factors affecting the seasonal variation in leachate of landfill, which particularly holds a higher risk of contaminating the environment. In addition, some of the measures to be taken in solid waste storage areas in order to minimize the mass of leachate are presented.

Evaluation of Ground Snow Loads in Turkish Codes Via Statistical Analysis of Turkey Snow Data

    Durmaz, Mustafa; Daloglu, Ayse

In Turkey many roofs exposed to snow loads exceeding the design snow loads are damaged or collapsed. Roof snow load specified for structural design in Turkish codes is calculated as the product of a ground snow load multiplied by the conversion factors that depend on the roof properties. In this study, the ground snow loads in Turkish codes are evaluated via statistical analysis of Turkey snow data obtained from 92 Turkish State Meteorological Service stations. The probability plot correlation coefficient test for Gumbel, lognormal and Weibull distributions are used to determine the best fit of the probability distribution considering the snow data. 50-year design ground snow loads and snow depths of the stations determined by using the selected distributions are compared to those proposed in Turkish codes. It is concluded that TS 498 is unsafe for Eastern Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia regions and Gumbel distribution used in TS 7046 does not represent half of the snow data.
