Coexistence of abyssal and ultra-depleted SSZ type mantle peridotites in a Neo-Tethyan Ophiolite in SW Turkey: Constraints from mineral composition, whole-rock geochemistry (major-trace-REE-PGE), and Re-Os isotope systematics

Uysal, Ibrahim; Ersoy, E. Yalcin; Karsli, Orhan; Dilek, Yildirim; Sadiklar, M. Burhan; Ottley, Chris J.; Tiepolo, Massimo; Meisel, Thomas

We present new, whole-rock major and trace element chemistry, including rare earth elements (REE), platinum-group elements (PGE), and Re-Os isotope data from the upper mantle peridotites of a Cretaceous Neo-Tethyan ophiolite in the Mugla area in SW Turkey. We also report extensive mineral chemistry data for these peridotites in order to better constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic environment of formation. The Mugla peridotites consist mainly of cpx-harzburgite, depleted harzburgite, and dunite. Cpx-harzburgites are characterized by their higher average CaO (2.27 wt.%), Al2O3 (2.07 wt.%), REE (53 ppb), and Os-187/Os-188((i)) ratios varying between 0.12497 and 0.12858. They contain Al-rich pyroxene with lower Cr content of coexisting spinel (Cr# = 13-22). In contrast, the depleted harzburgites and dunites are characterized by their lower average CaO (0.58 wt.%), Al2O3 (0.42 wt.%), and REE (1.24 ppb) values. Their clinopyroxenes are Al-poor and coexist with high-Cr spinel (Cr# = 33-83). The Os-187/Os-188((i)) ratios are in the range of 0.12078-0.12588 and are more unradiogenic compared to those of the cpx-harzburgites. Mineral chemistry and whole rock trace and PGE data indicate that formation of the Mugla peridotites cannot be explained by a single stage melting event; at least two-stages of melting and refertilization processes are needed to explain their geochemical characteristics. Trace element compositions of the cpx-harzburgites can be modeled by up to similar to 10-16% closed-system dynamic melting of a primitive mantle source, whereas those of the depleted harzburgites and dunites can be reproduced by similar to 10-16% open-system melting of an already depleted (similar to 16%) mantle. These models indicate that the cpx-harzburgites are the products of first-stage melting and low-degrees of melt-rock interaction that occurred in a mid-ocean ridge (MOR) environment. However, the depleted harzburgites and dunites are the product of second-stage melting and related refertilization which took place in a supra subduction zone (SSZ) environment. The Re-Os isotope systematics of the Mugla peridotites gives model age clusters of similar to 250 Ma, similar to 400 Ma and similar to 750 Ma that may record major tectonic events associated with the geodynamic evolution of the Neo-Tethyan. Rheic, and Proto-Tethyan oceans, respectively. Furthermore, >1000 Ma model ages can be interpreted as a result of an ancient melting event before the Proto-Tethys evolution. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Comparison of automated subcortical segmentation methods: VolBrain vs. 3D Slicer in brain volumetry

Acer, Niyazi; Palanci, Ozgur; Ipekten, Funda; Erdogan, Furkan Mert; Yarar, Burhan; Ozyasar, Ali Faruk

Objective:Accurate volume measurements of subcortical brain structures are essential in neuroimaging studies. This study aimed to compare two automated segmentation algorithms, 3D Slicer and VolBrain, for subcortical brain volumetry. Method:Subcortical volume measurements obtained using 3D Slicer and VolBrain were compared using the Neurofeedback Skull-stripped (NFBS) dataset. Statistical analyses included the coefficient of determination (R2) and Bland-Altman (B-A) plots. Volumetric measurements from both tools were evaluated across multiple subcortical brain regions. Results:Strong agreement was observed for the caudate nucleus, thalamus, and hippocampus, while notable discrepancies were identified in the amygdala, globus pallidus, and nucleus accumbens. Both constant and proportional systematic errors were detected in certain regions, with greater variability observed in 3D Slicer measurements. Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) analysis demonstrated weak agreement for the accumbens and amygdala, and moderate agreement for the hippocampus and thalamus, highlighting region-specific differences in performance Conclusion:Both VolBrain and 3D Slicer are effective tools for subcortical brain volumetry. VolBrain provides a fully automated workflow, whereas 3D Slicer allows greater flexibility through detailed corrections. Method selection should be guided by research objectives, regions of interest, and image quality. Further validation across diverse datasets is warranted to improve clinical applicability, particularly in regions showing lower agreement.

Modeling Long-Term Postseismic Deformation Following the 2020 Mw 7.0 Samos Earthquake Using Campaign and Continuous GNSS Observations

Solak, Halil Ibrahim; Tiryakioglu, Ibrahim; Gezgin, Cemil; Aladogan, Kayhan; Yalvaç, Sefa; Aktug, Bahadir; Yigit, Cemal Ozer; Dönmez, Ergin; Demirelli, Ertugrul; Eyübagil, Eda Esma

Highlights What are the main findings? What are the implications of the main findings?Highlights What are the main findings? What are the implications of the main findings?Abstract Postseismic deformation provides fundamental insights into earthquake-cycle processes, lithospheric rheology, and stress redistribution following large earthquakes. Although the 2020 Mw 7.0 Samos earthquake has been extensively investigated in terms of coseismic deformation and early postseismic behavior, the long-term evolution of deformation following the event remains poorly constrained. This study characterizes the long-term spatiotemporal evolution of postseismic deformation associated with the 2020 Mw 7.0 Samos earthquake using combined campaign and continuous GNSS observations. A total of 18 GNSS stations were analyzed over an approximately 4.5-year period following the earthquake. Pre-earthquake GNSS velocities were incorporated as prior constraints, while postseismic deformation was modeled using linear, logarithmic, exponential, and combined logarithmic-exponential functions. The preferred model for each station component was identified using the corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc), and model-selection robustness was evaluated through 1000 Monte Carlo observation-perturbation simulations. The results reveal a spatially heterogeneous postseismic deformation field with station-dependent temporal behavior. Among the nonlinear solutions passing the Monte Carlo and goodness-of-fit criteria, the seven single-process LOG and EXP solutions yielded characteristic relaxation times ranging from 182.6 to 730.5 days, with a median of 438.3 days. The two LOGEXP solutions additionally contained a logarithmic timescale of 109.6 days and exponential timescales of 292.2-438.3 days. These findings demonstrate that campaign GNSS observations, when integrated with continuous GNSS data and an objective statistical framework, can provide meaningful constraints on the long-term evolution of postseismic deformation despite sparse temporal sampling. More broadly, the results emphasize the strongly time-dependent nature of postseismic deformation and the critical role of observation timing in capturing its spatiotemporal evolution.

Background:Prominent ear deformity (PD) is an unacceptable condition of pinna that affects 5% of the population and is associated with emotional stress, behavioral disturbances, and social restrictions in relationships. Conchal hypertrphy, inadequate formation of antihelical fold, earlobe placement ahead than it should be, or various combinations of these changes are main characteristics of PD. Many surgical techniques have been described for the PD.The authors' aim was to present laterally based postauricular dermal flap combination with cartilage-sparing methods and effectiveness of this technique in suture extrusion prevention and reducing the rate of recurrence with long-term results.Methods:Forty-one patients had bilateral and 6 patients had unilateral PD, a total of 47 patients with a mean age of 14.48 were operated by using this combined procedure. A laterally based supraperichondrial dermal flap was prepared from a deepithelized elliptical postauricular incision. Mustarde and Furnas suture techniques were used solely for PD correction. The dissected laterally based dermal flap was fixed to the mastoid bone with sutures in stretched position after reshaping the auricular cartilage with sutures. Results:The average helix-mastoid distance was (mm) 16.282.36, concha-mastoid angle was 25.71 +/- 0.96 degrees on 12-month measurements. The helix-mastoid distance showed an increase of 1 to 3mm, in the concha-mastoid angle measurements of 1 degrees to 2 degrees. Statistically significant changes were observed between the average preoperative, postoperative 1. month, postoperative 12. month helix-mastoid distances (mm), and month concha-mastoid angle (degrees) measurements (P=0.0001).Conclusions:The laterally based postauricular dermal flap technique is an effective method to prevent suture extrusion and recurrence which are the most important complications of otoplasty procedure and easy to apply.

Petrogenetic constraints and phase equilibria modelling on amphibole-bearing high-grade metamafic rocks from the Maku ophiolite (NW Iran): implications for metamorphism along the central Neo-Tethyan suture

Modjarrad, Monir; Uysal, Ibrahim; Yara, Irfan O. M. A.; Sen, Ahmet Dundar; Xin, Guangyao; Müller, Dirk

We present an integrated petrological, mineral-chemical, whole-rock geochemical, microstructural, and phase-equilibrium study of the West Maku metamafics (WMM), an ophiolite-related mafic unit in NW Iran. The WMM comprises garnet amphibolites and amphibole-bearing high-grade metamafic rocks containing almandine-rich garnet, tschermakite-ferro-tschermakite, andesine, epidote/zoisite, annite, muscovite-phengite, spinel, ilmenite, chlorite, quartz, and K-feldspar. Immobile element systematics indicate a tholeiitic, MORB-like basaltic protolith; LILE and crust-sensitive element enrichment likely reflect inherited crustal/sediment-derived components and metamorphic redistribution during subduction-accretion and/or m & eacute;lange assembly. P-T modelling defines four relative stages: M1, upper greenschist-facies metamorphism at ca. 6.4 kbar and 360 degrees C; M2, prograde heating to 8.0-8.4 kbar and 700-720 degrees C; M3, peak upper-amphibolite- to granulite-facies conditions at 9.0-9.8 kbar and up to 810 degrees C, with localized anatexis; and M4, retrogression at ca. 3.8 kbar and 520 degrees C. The clockwise path records the burial and heating of MORB-derived crust in a subduction-accretionary setting, followed by collision-related thermal relaxation/crustal thickening and subsequent uplift. Regional comparisons indicate thermally heterogeneous evolution along the central Neo-Tethyan suture across Armenia, SE T & uuml;rkiye, NE Iraq and NW Iran.

Designing an industrial-scale radio frequency decontamination process for peanut butter

Coskun, Eda; Ozturk, Samet; Tasci, Caner; Kahraman, Kubra; Liu, Shuxiang; Li, Rui; Wang, Shaojin; Mert, Behic; Marra, Francesco; Erdogdu, Ferruh

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported outbreaks of Salmonella, particularly associated with low-moisture foods including peanut butter. Even though roasting is included along the processing line, the presence of these safety issues indicates the requirement of process following the packaging of the samples. Because of the lower thermal diffusivity of the peanut butter, a conventional thermal process is expected to be challenging with expected temperature non-uniformities. Therefore, radio frequency (RF) heating was considered in this study for thermal processing of peanut butter samples. For this purpose, a computational model was developed to determine the temperature change of peanut butter samples. Experimental studies for model validation were completed in a 10 kW - 27.12 MHz RF system at 3300 and 4000 V electrode potentials. Following the model validation, a comparison to the conventional thermal processing was presented, and industrial scale thermal processing studies were applied where up to 30 packaged samples were placed within the RF cavity. Process efficiency was determined with the process time decrease, temperature uniformity and decontamination effects. Science4Impact: This study demonstrated RF processing for an efficient thermal decontamination with uniform temperature distribution attained within the samples in an industrial scale process.

Greening the OECD: Unravelling the Complex Relationship Between Natural Resource Efficiency, Technological Innovation and Population Density on Ecological Footprint

Çabas, Meral; Beser, Nazife Ozge; Ayaydin, Hasan; Barut, Abdulkadir; Magazzino, Cosimo

This paper aims to investigate the relationship among green environmental technologies, resource efficiency, population density and ecological footprint in 38 OECD member countries between 2000 and 2019. The Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQREG) and Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimators are used to analyse this relationship. Based on the results, strong evidence of a negative relationship between green environmental technologies, resource efficiency, population density and ecological footprint emerges, suggesting that these factors contribute to environmental improvement in OECD economies. Overall, the findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics among these variables and provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders striving for sustainable environmental management and policy formulation. In this context, countries should develop standard guidelines and best practices on green technologies and resource efficiency, making it easier for sectors to adapt in these areas.

-In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of Moringa oleifera essential oil (MOEO) supplementation to rations of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) grown under heat stress (HS) on some adipokine (visfatin, adiponectin, and chemerin), intestinal (citrulline), 3,5,3 '-triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and thyroid-stimulation hormone (TSH) levels in the serum. For this purpose, 320 day-old male quail chicks were used. The study was conducted over 42 days, including a 7-d adaptation period and a 35-d experimental period. Eight trial groups were established, each including 10 quail: CT (control temperature, 25 celcius), MOEO 200, MOEO 400, MOEO 600, HSC (HS control), SMOEO 200, SMOEO 400, and SMOEO 600. Based on the results, a dose-dependent decrease was observed on days 21 and 42 in serum adiponectin and T3 in the stress and stress-free groups compared with the control group due to MOEO supplementation. The lowest decrease was observed in the MOEO 600 mg/kg dose group. In addition, an increase in stressed groups was observed when examining serum citrulline levels, while chemerin levels did not have a statistically significant effect. While the decrease in serum visfatin, T4, and TSH levels on the 21st day did not have a statistically significant effect, a significant effect was determined on the 42nd day. The addition of MOEO at 600 mg/kg to the ration may be beneficial in preventing intestinal damage and inflammation that may occur due to HS.

Supply chain resilience in the tourism and hospitality industry: A comprehensive examination of driving and restraining forces

Erol, Ismail; Oztel, Ahmet; Dogru, Tarik; Peker, Iskender; Neuhofer, Irem Onder; Benli, Tolga

Supply chain disruptions and a lack of resilient supply chains have adverse impact on the global economy. Particularly, complex nature of the tourism and hospitality industry makes it even more susceptible to failure when supply chain resiliency is rather low or does not exist. However, despite its significance, a comprehensive and systematic examination of building resilience in tourism and hospitality supply chains (THSCs) is lacking in the extant literature. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive framework that outlines the driving and restraining forces for building resilient THSCs. The decision framework proposed in this study integrates rough interval valued neutrosophic (RIVN) force field theory of change with RIVN-ISM-MICMAC methodology. The results showed that the restraining forces, such as lack of effective regulations and incentives and effective organizational and supply chain policies are the primary factors that constrain improving resilience in THSCs. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Eken, Oezgur; Yagin, Fatma Hilal; Bayer, Ramazan; Gulu, Mehmet; Akyildiz, Zeki; Nobari, Hadi

Purpose: Visual feedback and music while warm up may help elicit peak performance, but its effect during the Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) in futsal players is unexplored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of music and visual stimulus on WAnT performance in futsal players. Methods: The study included 17 young male futsal players (age, 21.53 +/- 1.32 years; height, 177.59 +/- 5.75 cm; 73.71 +/- 9.31 kg; BMI 23.342 +/- .47). The WAnT was administered using three distinct protocols: with music (M), without music (NM), and with music and visual feedback (MV) following a 10-min warm-up at 72-h intervals. After WAnT, the following parameters were evaluated: (a) peak power output: PPO (W), (b) relative peak power output: RPPO (W/kg), (c) mean power output: MPO (W), (d) relative mean power output: RMPO (W/kg), (e) fatigue index: FI (%), and (f) minimum power output MIPO (W). Results: MV indicated that futsal players' WAnT values, including PPO, RPPO, MPO, RMPO, and MIPO improved more than with other protocols (p < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference between protocols for FI (%) WAnT values (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Listening to music and watching visual feedback while warm up before performing WAnT performance suggest to coaches and futsal players.

Acetylcholinesterase and carbonic anhydrase isoenzymes I and II inhibition profiles of taxifolin

Gocer, Hulya; Topal, Fevzi; Topal, Meryem; Küçük, Murat; Teke, Dilek; Gülçin, Ilhami; Alwasel, Saleh H.; Supuran, Claudiu T.

Taxifolin, also known as dihydroquercetin, is a flavonoid commonly found in plants. Carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) plays an important role in many critical physiological events including carbon dioxide (CO2)/bicarbonate (HCO3-) respiration and pH regulation. There are 16 known CA isoforms in humans, of which human hCA isoenzymes I and II (hCA I and II) are ubiquitous cytosolic isoforms. In this study, the inhibition properties of taxifolin against the slow cytosolic isoenzyme hCA I, and the ubiquitous and dominant rapid cytosolic isoenzyme hCA II were studied. Taxifolin, as a naturally bioactive flavonoid, has a K-i of 29.2nM against hCA I, and 24.2nM against hCA II. For acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE) inhibition, K-i parameter of taxifolin was determined to be 16.7nM. These results clearly show that taxifolin inhibited both CA isoenzymes and AChE at the nM levels.

The research and design of new inhibitors for the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and glaucoma through inhibition of cholinesterases (ChEs; acetylcholinesterase, AChE and butyrylcholinesterase, BChE) and carbonic anhydrase enzymes are among the important targets. Here, a series of novel sulfonamide-bearing pyrazolone derivatives (1a-f and 2a-f) were successfully synthesized and characterized by using spectroscopic and analytical methods. The inhibitory activities of these newly synthesized compounds were evaluated both in vitro and in silico for their effect on carbonic anhydrases (hCA I and hCA II isoenzymes) and ChEs. The in vitro studies showed that these novel compounds demonstrated potential inhibitory activity, with K-I values covering the following ranges: 18.03 +/- 2.86-75.54 +/- 4.91 nM for hCA I, 24.84 +/- 1.57-85.42 +/- 6.60 nM for hCA II, 7.45 +/- 0.98-16.04 +/- 1.60 nM for AChE, and 34.78 +/- 5.88-135.70 +/- 17.39 nM for BChE. Additionally, many of these compounds showed promising inhibitory activity, and some showed higher potency than reference compounds. While the in silico studies have also identified the potential binding positions of these compounds, using the crystal structures of hCA I, II, AChE and BChE receptors. The varying affinities demonstrated by these designed compounds for ChEs and hCA isoenzymes show that these compounds could hold promise as potential alternative agents for selectively inhibiting ChEs and hCAs in the treatment of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and glaucoma.

Novel asymmetric biscarbothioamides as Alzheimer's disease associated cholinesterase inhibitors: synthesis, biological activity, and molecular docking studies

Muglu, Halit; Yakan, Hasan; Erdogan, Musa; Topal, Fevzi; Topal, Meryem; Turkes, Cuneyt; Beydemir, Sukru

Exploring novel frameworks for treating Alzheimer's disease is an ambitious objective. In this particular context, a range of asymmetric biscarbothioamide derivatives (3a-l) with varying substitutions have been meticulously designed and effectively synthesized. The newly synthesized compounds have all been definitively characterized using established spectroscopic techniques such as 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. In vitro, all the derivatives (3a-l) were evaluated to assess their inhibitory potential against cholinesterase enzymes (acetylcholinesterase, AChE, and butyrylcholinesterase, BChE). The outcomes demonstrated that these derivatives were potent and exhibited selectivity in inhibiting AChE, except for compounds 3b and 3e, which specifically inhibited BChE, showcasing varying degrees of KI values. Significantly, compounds 3j (KIs of 11.91 +/- 2.25 nM for AChE and 77.76 +/- 8.02 nM for BChE) and 3h (KIs of 14.73 +/- 2.30 nM for AChE and 59.54 +/- 6.20 nM for BChE) emerged as the most potent dual inhibitors of AChE and BChE within the series, respectively, with KI constants even lower than those of the standard drug tacrine (KIs of 68.70 +/- 5.39 nM for AChE and 111.60 +/- 10.52 nM for BChE). Furthermore, their potential scavenging activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals was evaluated. To further validate the experimental findings, molecular docking studies were performed in silico to ascertain the binding modes of these compounds with the active pockets of AChE and BChE enzymes. Investigating innovative frameworks for addressing Alzheimer's disease is a challenging goal. In this specific scenario, a selection of asymmetric biscarbothioamide derivatives (3a-l) with different substitutions has been carefully formulated and successfully synthesized.

Multiple Mantle Melting and Metasomatism during the Initial Stages of Subduction: Multi-Geochemical and Os-Isotope Evidence from Well-Preserved Kızıldağ Ophiolite, southern Türkiye

Uysal, Ibrahim; Sen, Ahmet D.; Su, Ben-Xun; Ersoy, Yalcin; Demir, Yilmaz; Pan, Qi-Qi; Hu, Wen-Jun; Bagci, Utku; Godard, Marguerite

The processes governing ophiolite formation and evolution remain incompletely understood. The K & imath;z & imath;lda & gbreve; ophiolite, a well-preserved remnant of the Neo-Tethyan oceanic lithosphere in the Anatolian region, southern T & uuml;rkiye, offers critical insights into subduction-related processes and geodynamics. This study presents new element data for mineral and whole-rock samples, combined with Re-Os isotopic compositions of mantle peridotites and associated crustal rocks and extrusives. Petrographic observations identify two distinct groups of peridotites: (1) those with very low modal clinopyroxene, interpreted as highly depleted harzburgites and preserving primary mineral assemblages, and (2) depleted harzburgites containing secondary clinopyroxene with elevated trace element contents, inferred to have crystallized from percolating melts and thus reflecting metasomatic modification. Spinel and orthopyroxene compositions indicate 17-25% degrees of partial melting, with evidence for melting in both garnet and spinel stability fields. However, mineral and whole-rock compositions also record subsequent cryptic and modal metasomatism. Crustal rocks and extrusives exhibit geochemical signatures transitional between fore-arc basalts and boninites, consistent with subduction initiation settings. Variations in Os isotope ratios (187Os/188Os) in crustal rocks further reveal melt-rock interactions and the incorporation of radiogenic Os from subducted oceanic crust. The integration of petrographic, geochemical, and isotopic data supports a four-stage tectonic model for subduction initiation and mantle wedge evolution, consistent with global models proposed for supra-subduction zone (SSZ) ophiolites, particularly those of the Tethyan domain. These findings provide new constraints on mantle melting, metasomatism, and subduction initiation processes and contribute to a broader understanding of SSZ mantle evolution in both regional and global contexts.

Comparative analysis of Glasgow Coma Scale, quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment, base excess, and lactate for mortality prediction in critically ill emergency department patients

Meral, Gurbuz; Ardiç, Senol; Günay, Serkan; Güzel, Kadir; Köse, Ahmet; Durmus, Hulya Gencbay; Uysal, Serhat; Coskun, Aydin

OBJECTIVES: It is crucial to promptly identify high-mortality patients in emergency departments and initiate their treatment as soon as possible. Although many parameters have been studied to select patients with high mortality, no comprehensive evaluation exists in previous literature on these parameters in critically ill patients, regardless of patient groups. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA), blood gas base excess (BE), and blood gas lactate in predicting mortality in critically ill patients admitted to the emergency department. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included adult patients with Emergency Severity Index 1-2 (critically ill) admitted to the emergency department. All patients were evaluated by the physician within 10 min, and blood gas samples were taken. The data collection forms recorded the patients' GCS and qSOFA scores at the time of first evaluation by the physician. The qSOFA score assessment was performed in all patients with ESI levels 1 and 2, regardless of whether infective pathology was suspected. Blood gas BE and lactate values were also from laboratory test results. Patients or their relatives were contacted by phone at the end of the 1st month to obtain information about the clinical condition (survival or mortality). RESULTS: A total of 868 patients were included, with 163 deaths observed within 30 days. GCS score, qSOFA score, and lactate value were significant in predicting mortality within 30 days. While the BE value was significant for predicting 30-day mortality for values equal to or below the lower limit of -1.5 (P < 0.001), it was not significant for values equal to or above the upper limit of +3 (P > 0.05). The most successful prediction model for predicting 30-day mortality was found to be qSOFA with a cutoff value of >= 1. CONCLUSION: In emergency departments, each of the GCS, qSOFA scores, BE, and lactate values can be used independently as a practical mortality prediction model in critically ill patients. Among these four models, qSOFA is the most successful practical mortality prediction model in critically ill patients.

Two-stage bimodal volcanism in a Late Cretaceous arc/back-arc setting, NE Turkey: Constraints from volcano-stratigraphy, zircon U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and whole-rock elemental and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope geochemistry

Oguz-Saka, Simge; Aydin, Faruk; Karsli, Orhan; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Aiglsperger, Thomas; Miggins, Daniel P.; Sen, Cuneyt; Kandemir, Raif; Sari, Bilal; Koppers, Anthony A. P.

The eastern Blacksea magmatic arc (EBMA) in the eastern Sakarya Zone (ESZ) provides an excellent opportunity to investigate birth of an extensional intra-arc and back-arc settings in the Late Cretaceous over the Early Cretaceous northern passive margin of the Neotethys Ocean. Volcano-stratigraphy clearly shows that the Late Cretaceous volcanic activity of the EBMA occurred in two major phases. Bimodality, characterized by mafic/ basaltic rocks at the base and felsic/silicic types on top of it, is a typical feature of the lower (LVS) and upper (UVS) volcanic successions in the Giresun region of the ESZ. U-Pb and Ar-Ar ages support the volcanic suc-cession as two-stage (LVS: ca. 92-85 and UVS: ca. 83-67 Ma) bimodal volcanism. Both the volcanic successions are represented by similar rock types consisting of tholeiitic to calc-alkaline basalt-basaltic andesites and calc-alkaline to shoshonitic dacite-rhyolites. Basaltic (M1-and M2-series) and felsic/silicic (F1-and F2-series) sam-ples of the LVS and UVS have an arc-like signature with enriched large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and light rare earth elements (LREEs) and depleted high field strength elements (HFSEs). Also, the felsic/silicic samples of the F1-and F2-series show prominent negative Sr and Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.4 to 0.9), suggesting that plagioclase fractionation played a key role on the evolution of both felsic series. Bimodal rock series in two phases have a wide range of 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.7048-0.7075) and 143Nd/144Nd(i) (0.5123-0.5127) ratios with var-iable epsilon Nd(i) values of-3.8 to +3.0. 206Pb/204Pb(i), 207Pb/204Pb(i) and 208Pb/204Pb(i) isotope ratios of the Giresun volcanic rocks vary in the range of 17.97-18.52, 15.55-15.65 and 37.53-38.56, respectively. Geochemical and isotopic data suggest that the parental magma of the M1-basaltic rocks were probably derived from a shallow (spinel-bearing) mantle metasomatized by slab/sediment-derived fluids. In contrast, the M2-basalts seem to have been originated from a deeper mantle source (spinel-garnet transition zone) enriched by slab/sediment-derived fluids and hydrous melts (bulk sediment) metasomatism with some contributions of lower/upper crustal materials. The least evolved basaltic samples in two phases are consistent with moderate (-10-15%) to high degree (-20-30%) partial melting of the metasomatized mantle. The silicic melts of the F1 -and F2-rocks series, on the other hand, were likely derived from melting of lower crustal materials consisting of meta-basalts/andesites and lesser amount of meta-sediments. Subsequently, these melts experienced FC +/- AFC and mixing processes during their ascent and emplacement to generate high-silica (rhyolitic) melts. Our data, combined with previous studies, suggest that two-stage bimodal volcanic rocks of the Late Cretaceous in the ESZ were formed in the transition from an extensional continental intra-arc to a back-arc setting during the north-ward subduction of the northern branch of Neotethys Ocean.

Background A limited number of studies have investigated the effects of circadian rhythm-based running exercise interventions on physical fitness in child athletes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of an eight-week morning and evening running program on lower extremity strength, agility and respiratory function in 10-12-year-old male footballers. Methods Participants visited the laboratory three times, with one-day intervals before and after the training program. The assessments included maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Additionally, agility and functional performance tests (FPTs) were conducted for both the dominant and non-dominant legs. Results The findings indicated that morning running was more effective than evening running in enhancing respiratory function. Morning running also showed superior results in lower extremity strength tests, particularly in the single-leg (SL) and triple-leg (THD) crossover hop for distance tests (CHDs) and the 6-m timed-hop test (6 m THT). Furthermore, the agility performance of the morning running group was significantly better than that of the evening and control groups. Conclusion Consequently, morning running interventions had a positive impact on key physical fitness parameters, including respiratory muscle strength, respiratory function, agility, and lower extremity strength in child footballers.

In the present study, the aqueous extract obtained from the roots of Euphorbia macroclada via ultrasound-assisted extraction (Ult-ER) was evaluated for its anticholinesterase (AChE and BChE), antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. While the extract exhibited weak inhibition against AChE (IC50: 507.69 +/- 17.95 mg/mL), it showed relatively greater inhibitory activity against BChE (IC50: 22.41 +/- 0.49 mg/mL). In antioxidant assays, Ult-ER exhibited measurable antioxidant responses, with DPPH and ABTS(+) radical-scavenging capacities of 18.33 +/- 0.49 and 119.59 +/- 1.86 mg TE/L, respectively. Its Fe-3(+) and Cu-2(+) reducing capacities were 128.51 +/- 12.57 and 670.33 +/- 11.59 mg TE/L, respectively. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were 84.80 +/- 3.31 mg GAE/g and 60.67 +/- 2.29 mg QE/g, while the total antioxidant capacity was 9.78 +/- 0.44 mg TE/g and 15.62 +/- 1.85 mg BHAE/g. In the antibacterial evaluation, Ult-ER at the highest tested concentration of 8 mg/mL exhibited inhibitory activity against all tested strains, including Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, whereas no detectable inhibition was observed at lower concentrations.
