Dynamic thermal modelling of PV performance and effect of heat capacity on the module temperature

    Tuncel, B.; Ozden, T.; Balog, R. S.; Akinoglu, B. G.

One of the main weaknesses of Si-based Photovoltaic (PV) solar modules is the sensitivity of their efficiency to module (cell) temperature. Especially in locations with long hot seasons, the efficiency loss of PVs due to high temperatures should be considered carefully. Thermal modelling is a method to predict the performance of a PV module using essentially the 1st law of thermodynamics and available data. In this paper, a transient thermal model is described, which considers hourly meteorological data, including wind speed and direction, module parameters, and locational information. In transient analysis, the heat capacity value of PV panel is required, but it is not a parameter specified in the manufacturer's datasheet. Experiments on the heat capacity of PV modules are missing in the literature. The thermal model provides verified performance analysis for a poly-c-Si PV module installed in Ankara, Turkey, with a calculated heat capacity value. And a sensitivity analysis for the heat capacity of the transient thermal model is performed. It is found that the model results are almost invariant under changing module heat capacity values.

Yikilmaz, Ahmet; Yilmaz, Coskun; Çiçekli, Atif; Eryilmaz, Onder; Budak, Cemalettin; Uyar, Musa; Ceylan, Tulay; Güler, Ozkan; Sahin, Fatma Nese

Background: The extant research on Taekwondo has focused primarily on the physiological effects of training, with limited interest in psychological resilience, self-defence and quality of life levels. The present study examined the effects of Taekwondo exercises on psychological resilience, self-defence and quality of life levels in healthy female subjects. Methods: The present study comprised 30 healthy, sedentary female subjects. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: one group participated in Taekwondo training (TG), while the other group served as the control group (CG). The sample sizes for both the TG and CG groups were 15. The TT group underwent conventional Taekwondo instruction, while the CG group maintained their habitual routine and refrained from sporting pursuits. The Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, the Physical Self-Defence Scale for Women, and the SF-12 Quality of Life Scale were administered before and after the six-week training period. Results: The 6-week Taekwondo training programme led to significant improvements in both physical health (PH) (p = 0.049) and mental health (MH) (p < 0.01) scores in female participants. It did not produce a significant change in psychological resilience (PR) scores (p > 0.05). It produced significant improvements in self-defence against simple physical attacks (SP) (p = 0.004) and self-defence against dangerous physical attacks (DP) (p = 0.041) scores. Conclusion: The positive effects of Taekwondo training on psychological resilience, physical self-defence and quality of life levels have been demonstrated in healthy female subjects. This study provides valuable insights into the impact of Taekwondo exercises on psychological resilience, physical self-defence and quality of life levels. The findings of this study can guide future intervention and programme design in the context of sports psychology.

Short-term resistance training enhances functional and physiological markers in older women: implications for biomechanical and health interventions in aging

Uçar, Mine Akkus; Yilmaz, Coskun; Soylu, Hakan Huseyin; Sariakçali, Baris; Budak, Cemalettin; Kavuran, Korhan; Durmusoglu, Mehmet Vakif; Ceylan, Levent

Background: The impact of resistance training extends beyond the enhancement of muscle strength, encompassing improvements in physical performance, postural stability, and overall functional capacity. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a 4-week resistance training program on functional capacity, respiratory muscle strength, diaphragm thickness, and liver density in healthy older women. Methods: The study included 30 healthy women aged 60-80 years and was designed as a randomized controlled experimental trial. Participants were randomly assigned to a resistance training (RT) group or a control (CON) group. Each participant attended the laboratory on three occasions: during the initial visit, the study procedures were explained; the second visit involved baseline assessments (6MWT, diaphragm thickness and liver fat via ultrasound, and respiratory muscle strength); and final measurements were conducted after the 4-week training programme during the third visit. Results: When pre- and post-training measurements were compared, the resistance training (RT) group demonstrated a significantly greater improvement (8.02%) in the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) distance compared to the control group (p < 0.001). In terms of diaphragm thickness (DT), the RT group showed a 16.66% increase, whereas the control group exhibited a 1.13% decrease (p < 0.001). Maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) increased by 12.30% in the RT group, while it decreased by 7.25% in the control group, indicating a 19.55% greater improvement in the RT group (p < 0.001). Regarding maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), a significant improvement of 21.48% was observed in the RT group, whereas a 0.75% decrease was recorded in the control group, resulting in a 22.23% greater enhancement in the RT group (p < 0.001). Finally, liver density (LD) increased by 12.30% in the RT group, while it decreased by 7.25% in the control group (p < 0.001). Conclusion: As a result of resistance training, greater improvement was observed in functional capacity, respiratory muscle strength, diaphragm thickness and liver density in the training group compared to the control group.

Effects of psychological skills training on self-control, perceived physical self-defense capacity, and mental toughness in elite female wrestlers: a randomized controlled trial

Tutal, Varol; Demir, Okan; Sahin, Oktay; Albayrak, Ahmet Yilmaz; Bayansalduz, Mehmet; Uzun, Recep Nur; Öz, Faik; Sahinler, Yunus; Ceylan, Levent; Yilmaz, Coskun

Background Self-control, self-defense self-efficacy, and mental resilience are fundamental psychological determinants of performance and competitive endurance in combat sports. However, scientific evidence on structured, evidence-based psychological intervention programs for professional female wrestlers remains limited. This study examined the effects of a psychological skills training (PST)-based intervention on self-control, self-defense self-efficacy, and mental resilience in professional female wrestlers. Methods A randomized controlled pre-test-post-test design was employed. Thirty-six professional female wrestlers (aged 18-25) were randomly assigned to a PST group (n = 18) or a control group (CG; n = 18). The PST group completed an 8-week structured psychological intervention alongside regular training, while the CG continued routine training only. Self-control, self-defense self-efficacy, and mental resilience were assessed pre-and post-intervention using valid and reliable psychometric scales. Data were analyzed via repeated-measures ANOVA, with effect sizes calculated. Results Significant group & times; time interactions were observed across multiple outcomes. A highly significant interaction emerged for perceived physical self-defense capacity (SP; F(1,34) = 56.525, p < 0.001, eta p(2) = 0.624) and for DP scores (F (1,34) = 9.360, p = 0.004, eta p(2) = 0.216). Among self-control subscales, significant interactions were found for inhibition (F (1,34) = 8.172, p = 0.007, eta p(2) = 0.194) and, more strongly, for initiation (F (1,34) = 14.157, p < 0.001, eta p(2) = 0.294). For mental resilience, highly significant interactions were detected for confidence (F (1,34) = 59.976, p < 0.001, eta p(2) = 0.638), control (F (1,34) = 32.486, p < 0.001, eta p(2) = 0.489), and persistence (F (1,34) = 32.709, p < 0.001, eta p(2) = 0.490). Overall, the intervention demonstrated medium-to-high effect sizes across psychological performance indicators. Conclusion These findings suggest that PST may serve as a useful complementary approach for enhancing self-control, perceived physical self-defense capacity, and mental toughness in professional female wrestlers. However, results should not be interpreted as evidence of improved competitive wrestling performance, technical success, or objectively measured physical self-defense ability, as these outcomes were not directly assessed in this study.

This study was undertaken to examine, for the first time, the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory properties of several extracts obtained from the aerial parts of Teucrium scordium subsp. scordioides (Schreb.) Arcang (family: Lamiaceae). Among the extracts, the EtOH extract contained the highest total phenolic (89.96 mg GAE/g) and flavonoid (45.74 mg RE/g) contents. Phenylethanoid glycosides were predominant, particularly in the ethanol and aqueous extracts, and teucroside/forsythoside B and verbascoside/forsythoside A were tentatively identified as the major compounds. EtOH and 70% EtOH extracts showed comparable (p > 0.05) anti-DPPH activity (201.89 and 188.52 mg TE/g), Cu++ (562.81 and 547.88 mg TE/g), and Fe+++ (329.13 and 320.08 mg TE/g) reducing capacities. The EtOH extract showed the best antityrosinase activity (72.00 mg KAE/g). The EtOAc extract inhibited human carbonic anhydrase (CA) isoenzymes I and CAII (IC50 = 26.86 and 65.37 mu g/mL, respectively). Complementary in silico analyses of the major phenylethanoid and flavonoid glycosides supported their possible multitarget interaction patterns and identified the Forsythoside A-BChE complex as a computationally favorable model for future experimental validation. Overall, these findings indicate that T. scordium subsp. scordioides may represent a natural source of antioxidants and enzyme inhibitors for use in different health-promoting formulations.

Late Cretaceous hybrid melt sources and flare-up magmatism in the eastern Sakarya Zone, NE Türkiye: Zircon Hf-O constraints and implications for VMS fertility

Aydin, Faruk; Oguz-Saka, Simge; Karsli, Orhan; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Moghadam, Hadi Shafaii; Zhao, Junxing; Schmitt, Axel K.

Understanding melt source evolution during arc-back-arc magmatism is essential for resolving crustal growth processes and the development of felsic-hosted volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) systems. Here we integrate new zircon HfO isotope data with published geochronological and whole-rock geochemical datasets to reassess the petrogenesis of Late Cretaceous arc and back-arc magmatic flare-ups in the eastern Sakarya Zone (ESZ), NE T & uuml;rkiye. Two high-flux magmatic episodes are recognized: a Turonian-Santonian pulse (similar to 92-86 Ma) forming the lower volcanic sequence (LVS), and a younger Campanian pulse (similar to 84-75 Ma) forming the upper volcanic sequence (UVS), accompanied by contemporaneous arc-related granitoids. Zircons from both LVS and UVS display predominantly positive epsilon Hf(t) values (+2 to +12) coupled with mantle-like delta O-18 (5.0-5.6 parts per thousand), but contain abundant inherited Mesoproterozoic-Paleozoic cores and show variable two-stage model ages (T-DM (c) = 0.4-1.4 Ga). Together with the peraluminous affinity of many felsic units, these features indicate that the dacite-rhyolite suites hosting VMS deposits were generated by melting of compositionally heterogeneous lower crust variably hybridized by juvenile basaltic inputs. Arc granitoids likewise record a transition from dominantly juvenile, I-type magmatism during the Coniacian-Santonian to more evolved, crust-influenced signatures during the Campanian. We propose that both flare-ups reflect repeated episodes of basaltic underplating and deep-crustal heating, producing voluminous felsic magmas capable of sustaining long-lived hydrothermal systems. The spatial and temporal coincidence between felsic-dominated flare-ups and VMS mineralization suggests that hybridized felsic magmas, rather than purely juvenile mantle melts, played a central role in generating the physiochemical conditions required for metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids in the ESZ.

Multi-joint isokinetic strength profiling as a predictor of vertical jump performance in elite freestyle wrestlers A cross-sectional principal component analysis

Sever, Ozan; Ceylan, Halil Ibrahim; Dhahbi, Wissem; Yilmaz, Hasan Huseyin; Özdemir, Kubra; Yazici, Ahmet Gokhan; Jalalov, Ferhad; Günay, Ahmet Rahmi; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Stefanica, Valentina

Wrestling requires coordinated lower-limb strength for explosive techniques. While isokinetic testing isolates joint-specific strength and countermovement jumps assess functional power, comprehensive multi-joint assessments with advanced factor analysis remain unexplored in elite wrestlers. Twenty-one national-level male freestyle wrestlers (22.3 +/- 2.8 years; 76.2 +/- 14.7 kg) completed cross-sectional neuromuscular assessments. Isokinetic concentric strength testing at 60 degrees/s evaluated hip, knee, and ankle joint functions bilaterally using an Isomed 2000 dynamometer. Vertical jump power was assessed through countermovement jumps under bilateral and unilateral conditions using the Optojump system. All strength and power variables were normalized to fat-free mass determined via air displacement plethysmography. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlations with Benjamini-Hochberg correction, stepwise multiple regression, and principal component analysis. Bilateral jump performance correlated strongly with knee extension (R = 0.798, P <.001) and hip extension strength (R = 0.664, P =.001), with combined predictors explaining 68.8% of variance (F-2,F-18 = 19.8, P <.001). Principal component analysis identified a primary extensor factor (hip and knee extension, 52.6% variance) and an auxiliary factor (ankle plantar flexion and hip adduction, 19.0% variance). Unilateral jump models demonstrated lower explanatory power (dominant: 39.8%, non-dominant: 25.7%). Multi-joint isokinetic strength assessment, particularly hip and knee extension capacity, provides a robust prediction of vertical jump performance in elite wrestlers. The identified primary extensor strength factor represents a fundamental neuromuscular capacity underlying explosive lower-limb function, supporting targeted strength development strategies for wrestling-specific performance enhancement.

Nayman, Alaaddin; Guler, Ibrahim; Keskin, Suat; Erdem, Tuba Berra; Borazan, Hale; Kucukapan, Ahmet; Ozbiner, Huseyin; Batur, Abdussamed; Ertekin, Ersen; Feyzioglu, Bahadir

PURPOSE We aimed to demonstrate the success and reliability of a novel puncture, aspiration, injection, and reaspiration (PAIR) technique in liver hydatid cysts. METHODS Percutaneous treatment with ultrasonographic guidance was performed in 493 hepatic hydatid cysts in 374 patients. Patients were treated with a new PAIR technique by single puncture method using a 6F trocar catheter. The results of this novel technique were evaluated with regards to efficacy and safety of the procedure and complication rates. RESULTS Out of 493 cysts, 317 were Gharbi type I (WHO CE 1) and 176 were Gharbi type II (WHO CE 3A). Of all cysts, 13 were referred to surgery because of cystobiliary fistulization. Recurrence was observed in 11 cysts one month later. Therefore, the success rate of the PAIR technique was 97.7% (469/480). Minor complications (fever, urticaria-like reactions, biliary fistula) were seen in 44 treated patients (12%, 44/374); the only major complication was reversible anaphylactic shock which was observed in two patients (0.5%, 2/374). CONCLUSION This novel modified PAIR technique may be superior to catheterization by Seldinger technique due to its efficiency, easier application, lower severe complication rate, and lower cost. Further comparative studies are required to confirm our observations.

Consequences of Information and Communication Technologies and Environmental Degradation on Health Expenditure

Bayraktar, Yuksel; Aydin, Serdar; Çakir, Mehmet Ali; Recepoglu, Mursit; Ozyilmaz, Ayfer; Buyukakin, Figen; Çakir, Sumeyra

This study aims to examine how the subcomponents and overall measurement of ecological footprint, as well as the use of information and communication technologies, affect health expenditures. For this study, the sample group consisted of the top 25 countries with the highest ecological footprint for the period 2000 to 2021. System GMM estimation results demonstrate that economic growth and ecological footprint have a positive impact on health expenditures. Covid-19 dummy variables, have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. On the other hand, information and communication technologies has a statistically significant but negative effect on health expenditures. The estimation results show that the Covid-19 pandemic increased health expenditures. Looking at the effect of subcomponents of environmental degradation on health expenditures, all subcomponents have a statistically significant and positive effect on health expenditures. It is seen that the most effective variable is forest products. The variable that has almost the same impact as the footprint of forest products is the carbon footprint. Carbon footprint has significant and positive impact on health expenditures, followed by fishing grounds cropland, grazing land, built-up land. The results of the study indicate which forms of pollution should be given priority by policymakers in order to prevent an increase in health expenditure resulting from environmental degradation.

The development of effective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitors remains a crucial objective in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, a novel synthetic approach was established to prepare a series of diaryl-substituted tacrine derivatives. Initially, brominated aminobenzonitrile was subjected to Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions with various aryl boronic acids to yielding diaryl-substituted aminobenzonitriles at yields of 60%-72%. These intermediates were then cyclized with cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone under Friedl & auml;nder conditions using BF3 & centerdot;OEt2 as a catalyst, affording six- and seven-membered diaryl tacrine analogues in yields of 52%-68%. All synthesized compounds were characterized by NMR, IR, and elemental analysis. The inhibitory activities of these compounds (7-16) against AChE and BChE were evaluated, and several analogs demonstrated potent dual-enzyme inhibition at nanomolar concentrations. Notably, compounds 8 and 13 exhibited half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of 6.848 and 8.545 nmol/L for BChE, respectively, indicating strong potential as selective cholinesterase inhibitors. The structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis revealed the influence of aryl substituents on the potency and selectivity of enzyme inhibition. Compared to previously reported tacrine derivatives, the newly synthesized analogs exhibited superior inhibitory profiles, indicating their potential as lead compounds for further development in AD therapeutics. Fidan-Yardimci, Melike; Akay, Seref; Sharifi, Fatemeh; Sevimli-Gur, Canan; Ongen, Gaye; Yesil-Celiktas, Ozlem

The bioavailability of drugs can be improved by regulating the structural properties, particularly lipoid systems, such as niosomes, can increase cellular uptake. Herein, we optimized double emulsion and niosomal formulations for encapsulating anthocyanin-rich black carrot extract. Nanoparticles obtained by selected formulation were characterized in terms of morphology, particle size, drug encapsulation efficiency, in vitro release and cytotoxicity. The optimum conditions for niosomal formulation were elicited as 30 mg of cholesterol, 150 mg of Tween 20 and feeding time of 1 min at a stirring rate of 900 rpm yielding the lowest average particle size of 130 nm. In vitro release data showed the majority of the encapsulated anthocyanins were released at the end of 10 h. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the absorption of anthocyanins released from niosomes and cytotoxicity was assessed against neuroblastoma. Overall, these findings suggest that niosomal vesicles might be suitable delivery systems for anthocyanins.

Pre-Exercise Caffeine and Sodium Bicarbonate: Their Effects on Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Performance in a Crossover, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study

Kacoglu, Celil; Kirkaya, Izzet; Ceylan, Halil Ibrahim; de Assis, Gilmara Gomes; Almeida-Neto, Paulo; Bayrakdaroglu, Serdar; Oliveira, Cesar Chaves; Özkan, Ali; Nikolaidis, Pantelis T.

Caffeine and sodium bicarbonate are extensively researched ergogenic aids known for their potential to enhance exercise performance. The stimulant properties of caffeine on the central nervous system, coupled with the buffering capacity of sodium bicarbonate, have been associated with improved athletic performance. This has led to investigations of their combined effects on strength. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of isolated and combined caffeine and sodium bicarbonate consumption on strength using the isometric mid-thigh pull test (IMTP). Nineteen male college students (age 23.6 +/- 1.6 years) participated in this crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. They were exposed to the following conditions: control (no supplement), placebo (20 g maltodextrin), caffeine (6 mg/kg), sodium bicarbonate (0.3 g/kg), and a combination of caffeine and sodium bicarbonate. Supplements and placebo were diluted in water and consumed 60 min prior to the IMTP tests. Two 5 s IMTP trials were performed at 40-60% and 60-80% of One Repetition of Maximum (1RM) with a 60 s rest between. Consumption of caffeine or Caf + NaHCO3 did not significantly change peak IMTP strength values at any intensity (p = 0.110). The peak IMTP values did not show significant differences between conditions or from control condition values (1091 +/- 100 N) to Caf (1224 +/- 92 N), NaHCO3 (1222 +/- 74 N), and Caf +/- NaHCO3 (1152 +/- 109 N). However, the test of the results of the ANOVA analysis of repeated measures of effect within the caffeine condition was significant for the increase in IMTP relative strength compared to control (p < 0.05). Thus, the IMTP force values increased significantly from control to Caf (p = 0.016) and from Pla to Caf (p = 0.008), but not for other comparisons (p > 0.05). In summary, caffeine supplementation alone, taken 60 min before exercise, positively affects submaximal strength performance. In contrast, sodium bicarbonate, whether taken alone or in combination with caffeine, does not enhance submaximal strength in the IMTP tests.

MODIFIED KDIGO FOR PREDICTING MORTALITY IN ICU PATIENTS RECEIVING CONTINUOUS RENAL REPLACEMENT THERAPY FOR ACUTE RENAL FAILURE: KDIGO-URINARY OUTPUT VS. KDIGO-SERUM CREATININE LEVEL

Tulgar, Serkan; Cakiroglu, Basri; Cevik, Banu Eler; Karakilic, Evvah; Ates, Nagihan Gozde; Gergerli, Ruken; Ozdemir, Erman

Introduction: Acute Renal Injury (ARI) is a constant problem for patients in intensive care and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) is an ever-more important part of acute renal injury (ARI) treatment. Various criteria have been used for the diagnosis and classification of acute renal failure, including RIFLE (Risk-Injury-Failure-Loss-End stage), AKIN (Acute Kidney Injury Network) and most recently KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes). Many studies have only evaluated urinary output or serum creatinine when categorizing ARI. Our aim was to determine the predictors of mortality in intensive care patients treated with CRRT and to compare mortality with ARI level as determined by KDIGO-Serum Creatinine (KDIGO-SCr) and KDIGO-urinary output (KDIGO-UO) Materials and methods: This retrospective study was performed on intensive care patients receiving CRRT at our institute between January 2010-December 2011. Patient files were reviewed and demographic data, hospitalization time, laboratory findings, CRRT commencement and ARI levels were noted. Results: Seventy patients were included in the study. Mortality was found to be associated with patients' age, Glascow Coma Scale (GCS) score, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score and adjusted predicted death rate. (p<0,01). Receiver Operating Curve (ROC) area under the curve was statistically significant for determination of mortality using KDIGO-SCR (p<0.01) although the same was not true for KDIGO-UO (p>0.05). Conclusions: We believe that RIFLE, AKIN, KDIGO criteria are each good predictors of mortality. In the case of KDIGO criteria, based solely on serum creatinine or urinary output, KDIGO-SCr was found to be a better predictor of mortality when compared to KDIGO-UO.

Determination of Mineral, Fatty Acid, and Soluble Carbohydrate Profiles of Green Algae Ulva rigida, Chaetomorpha linum, Codium fragile, Caulerpa prolifera and Caulerpa racemosa f. requienii Collected from Turkiye Coasts

Yucetepe, Aysun; Altuntas, Umit; Sensu, Eda; Izci, Yunus; Ozcelik, Beraat; Okudan, Emine Sukran

The nutritional properties of five different green macroalgae including Ulva rigida, Chaetomorpha linum, Codium fragile, Caulerpa prolifera and Caulerpa racemosa f. requienii from Turkey were investigated. The chemical composition of green macroalgae was varied, with ash, crude fiber, protein, lipid and carbohydrate ranging from 40.71 to 52.82%, 12.02-17.56%, 4.40-26.19%, 0.57-3.85% and 4.58-42.28% in dry weight, respectively. The fatty acid contents of the algae were quite variable and palmitic acid (C16) was found to be the primary fatty acid for all the samples with a value of more than 49.61%. Palmitic acid was followed by oleic acid, which is a monounsaturated fatty acid. This study revealed that green algae are rich in important soluble carbohydrates such as myo-inositol and glucose, health promoting unsaturated fatty acids (mainly oleic acid) and essential macroelements such as potassium, magnesium and microelements such as iron, zinc and selenium. The results of the current study contribute to a better understanding of macroalgae and encourage their use in food-related applications.

Serum neopterin and kynurenine as predictive and prognostic biomarkers in prostate cancer: the role of dietary inflammatory index and biomarker interactions

Icer, Mehmet Arif; Koçak, Tevfik; Acar-Tek, Nilufer; Yesil, Suleyman; Icer, Yusuf

Background It has been shown that neopterin levels in various body fluids can help predict the diagnosis of different malignancies. Although many studies have investigated the roles of serum neopterin concentrations, tryptophan metabolism, and the dietary inflammation index (DII) in various cancers, the connection between these factors and prostate cancer (PC) remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive and prognostic roles of serum neopterin, and kynurenine levels, along with the kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio (KTR) and DII in prostate cancer. Methods This study was conducted with 57 newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients, 55 benign prostate hyperplasia patients, and 56 healthy male individuals in the control group, all aged 40 years and older. Participants had specific anthropometric measurements taken, and three-day food records were kept. DII was calculated based on data for thirty-four available nutrients by using food records. Serum levels of neopterin, kynurenine, tryptophan, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Results Serum neopterin (11.79 +/- 6.09), kynurenine (1655.48 +/- 1122.04), TNF-alpha (221.59 +/- 232.06) and IFN-gamma (137.68 +/- 107.11) levels were higher in the malignant group than in both the control (2.72 +/- 0.76, 352.40 +/- 69.33, 223.94 +/- 226.67, and 23.03 +/- 7.28, respectively) and benign groups (3.17 +/- 0.74, 377.94 +/- 109.05, 179.61 +/- 224.36, and 25.63 +/- 7.50, respectively) (p < 0.05). Another result of our study is that in the malignant group, serum neopterin levels exhibited significant positive correlations with serum kynurenine (r = 0.80, p < 0.0001), IFN-gamma (r = 0.86, p < 0.0001) and TNF-alpha levels (r = -0.27, p = 0.0453) and DII (r = 0.30, p = 0.0229), while they exhibited weak correlations with serum PSA, and other diet parameters. Additionally, kynurenine was the only parameter showing significant differences in mean values concerning surgical margins (p < 0.05). Conclusions The findings of this study support the hypothesis that serum neopterin and specific tryptophan catabolites (e.g., kynurenine), could serve as predictive and prognostic biomarkers for prostate cancer diagnosis. However, our results do not support the hypothesis that DII and certain dietary factors play a direct role in the development or diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Magmatic, tectonic and metallogenic evolution of the Eastern Pontides, Turkey: a protracted or discrete construction of the crustal fertility?

Turlin, Francois; Moritz, Robert; Sönmez, Safak Utku; Keskin, Serdar; Karsli, Orhan; Aydin, Faruk; Ulyanov, Alexey; Dokuz, Abdurrahman

Even though mechanisms of crustal growth and differentiation are well known, the spatial and temporal evolution of the composition of the continental crust remains poorly constrained, even more when considering the metal budget in mountain belts. In this study, we use the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey, as a natural laboratory to decipher the role of successive tectono-magmatic events during the buildup of the continental crust fertility. This area is a Gondwana-derived terrane that accreted to the Eurasian margin. It underwent successive orogenic phases associated with the closure of the Paleo- and Neotethys oceans, and lastly the Alpine orogeny. It hosts abundant volcanogenic massive sulfide, porphyry and epithermal deposits, mostly formed in the latest stages of arc construction. These features relative to the buildup of metal fertility in this continental crust raise questions such as were the physico-chemical conditions during the early sterile history of the Eastern Pontides unfavorable to form ore deposits or were the metals progressively concentrated in the crust during successive orogenic events? We will use whole-rock geochemistry, U-Pb zircon dating, and Hf-O isotopic and trace element compositions of magmatic zircons to constrain the construction of the continental crust in the Eastern Pontides, and its metal fertility through time.

The phytochemical profile and multi-target bioactivity of four Turkish Rosa species, R. canina, R. hemisphaerica, R. horrida, and R. pulverulenta, were evaluated across vegetative organs (twigs and leaves) and three solvent polarities (ethyl acetate (EA), methanol (MeOH), water), in total 24 extracts. Untargeted Ultra-High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS) metabolomics, along with total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) content, six antioxidant assays and inhibition of seven enzymes were determined. Twig EA extracts displayed unexpectedly high TPC (83-105 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE) per g) and TFC (35-47 mg rutin equivalent (RE) per g), indicative of selective aglycone flavonoid enrichment. The phenolic profiles identified 337 putative compounds, of which 60.84% belonged to the flavonoid class. The semi-quantitative analysis also indicates that methanol and water extracts had higher quantities of glycosylated flavonoids and phenolic acids, while EA extracts were richer in lignans, especially R. horrida-leaf-EA (1743.25 & micro;g SE per g DW), and polyphenols. In enzyme inhibition assays, EA extracts demonstrated consistent multi-target activity: AChE inhibition (up to 2.49 mg galantamine equivalent (GALAE) per g), BChE inhibition (up to 4.44 mg GALAE per g), tyrosinase inhibition (up to 63.58 mg kojic acid equivalent (KAE) per g), alpha-amylase inhibition (up to 0.72 mmol acarbose equivalent ACAE per g), and carbonic anhydrase inhibition (CA I IC50 as low as 12.17 & micro;g mL-1). The R. hemisphaerica-twig-EA extract showed highly selective cytotoxic activity against A375 cells, with a 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) of 3.22 & micro;g mL-1 and an SI of 73.95, compared to VERO cells. This is the first report of carbonic anhydrase inhibition, BChE-selective activity, cytotoxicity, and comprehensive enzyme-inhibitory data for R. hemisphaerica, R. horrida, and R. pulverulenta. These findings reframe the phytopharmacological potential of Turkish Rosa species beyond their traditionally studied fruit.

Introduction: Nutmeg is the dried seed of an evergreen aromatic tree from the plant family Myristicaceae. It is widely used in traditional medicine. Although misuse is rare, it needs to be understood that this plant, widely used as a spice in various parts of the world, can be misused and can result in emergency presentation due to intoxication. Case Report: We describe a case of intoxication in a 22-year-old male student after he mixed nutmeg with fruit juice and drank it. Neurological symptoms and anticholinergic signs were present during presentation. Conclusion: Nutmeg intoxication must be one of the possibilities considered at differential diagnosis in patients presenting to the emergency department with findings of anticholinergic intoxication.
