Kalkan, Asim; Memetoglu, Mehmet Erdem; Bilir, Ozlem; Ersunan, Gokhan; Kutlu, Rasim; Tutar, Nuri
Objectives The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the mean platelet volume between the patients with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and control subjects. Methods Data were collected retrospectively from the patients' medical records. The study group consisted of 110 patients with newly diagnosed acute DVT in the lower extremities. An age, gender, and body mass index-matched control group consisted of 98 patients with normal duplex ultrasound findings. We compared the mean platelet volume in patients with acute DVT and control participants. Results There was no significant difference between the study and control groups in mean platelet volume (8.8 +/- 1.6 vs 8.7 +/- 1.3 fl, respectively; p>0.05). Age (p=0.899), body mass index (p=0.43), gender (p=0.466), and platelet count (p=0.886) were statistically similar in both groups. Conclusions There was no significant difference in mean platelet volume between patients with acute DVT and the control group. According to our result, we propose that mean platelet volume should not be considered as an index of acute DVT.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ2Effect of enhanced external counterpulsation treatment on mean platelet volume in patients affected by ischemic chronic heart failure
Ertas, Gokhan; Kozdag, Guliz; Emre, Ender; Akay, Yasar; Ural, Dilek; Hebert, Kathy
Mean platelet volume (MPV) is increased in chronic heart failure (CHF) and is an independent predictor of mortality in CHF patients. It is not known whether enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) therapy leads to decreased MPV values or not. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of EECP on platelet count and MPV values and to assess the influence of MPV on the risk of death and recurrent ischemic events in ischemic CHF patients. A total of 68 ischemic heart failure patients with CHF symptoms and refractory angina pectoris were included in the study, 47 consecutive patients (39 males and eight females) aged 44-82 years. Although follow-up period started after completion of EECP in treated patients, control group follow-up started at the end of 7-week treatment without EECP. All patients were monitored for a mean duration of 13 +/- 8 months (range, 1-36 months). The primary endpoints of the study were effects of EECP treatment on platelets after treatment period (7 weeks) and the recurrence of ischemic events. Secondary endpoint was cardiovascular death during the follow-up period. We observed a significant increase in platelet count and decrease in MPV levels (P=0.044 and P=0.004, respectively) in the control group. There were no significant differences in platelet count and MPV levels in the EECP group (P>0.05). After the treatment period, New York Heart Association functional classification (2.60 +/- 0.75 vs. 1.72 +/- 0.68, P<0.001) and Canadian Cardiovascular Society functional classification of angina (2.50 +/- 0.90 vs. 1.60 +/- 0.74, P<0.001) improved in patients with EECP treatment. In our study, we found that EECP therapy had a neutral effect on MPV values and platelet count Blood Coagul Fibrinolysis 23:127-131 (C) 2012 Wolters Kluwer Health vertical bar Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ2Are extramedian symptoms associated with peripheral causes in patient with carpal tunnel syndrome? Electrodiagnostic and ultrasonographic study
Mansiz-Kaplan, Basak; Akdeniz-Leblecicier, Merve; Yagci, Ilker
Objective: To evaluate the relationship between extramedian spreading of sensorial symptoms and median and ulnar nerve cross-sectional area (CSA) and to compare the ultrasonographic and electrophysiological findings in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) with or without extramedian sensory symptoms. Design: Cross-sectional study. Materials and methods: Patients with CTS were divided into two groups as with or without extramedian symptoms and were assessed clinically, electrophysiologically and ultrasonographically by three blind investigators. In electrophysiological tests, median and ulnar nerve conduction studies were performed. Nerve cross-sectional areas were measured at hook of hamate, psiform bone, radio-ulnar joint, one-third distal part of forearm, and medial epicondyle by ultrasonography. Findings: The study was completed with 61 patients (108 hands). Extramedian symptoms were present in 31 patients (54 hands). Finger grip strength was lower, pain values evaluated with visual analogue scale were higher in patients with extramedian symptoms (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in electrophysiological and ultrasonographic parameters. Conclusion: According to our results, extramedian symptoms are not related to nerve conduction studies or nerve ultrasonography, these symptoms may be explained with central sensitization in patient with CTS. Oguz, Enes Cengiz; Gyasi, Evans Akwasi; Pala, Fahrettin; Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip; Barut, Abdulkadir
The study sheds light on the subtle interactions among financial development, foreign direct investment (FDI), and the quality of regulatory frameworks, with particular reference to their deep influence on renewable energy use and carbon emissions across 22 developed countries from 2002-2021. The results show an interesting tendency: Financial development and FDI will reduce reliance on renewable energy, whereas a significant increase in GDP per capita will increase reliance. Secondly, carbon emissions have a negative association with the adoption of renewable energy and financial development, though both reduce environmental quality; there is a positive relation between real gross domestic product (GDP) and energy depletion in terms of these toxic emissions. The significant role of regulatory quality as a moderator in this process is particularly striking. There is a direct correlation between financial stability and more robust regulation, resulting in reduced financial liquidity available for investing in renewable projects and restricting the free flow of clean FDI. Crucially, the paper argues that when combined with strong regulation, FDI is more likely to contribute to reductions in emissions, while FYGD, nevertheless regulated at a high level of quality, should raise emissions. Winding up, the result indicates that neither financial depth nor institutional quality, in isolation, is sufficient to deliver significant environmental improvement. Thus, it is urgent to adopt sound green finance policies and to formulate focused regulatory systems that integrate financial development and foreign direct investment with a broader sustainability agenda.

- MakaleYalnız künye2025THE IMPACT OF UNCERTAINTY IN GLOBAL GOLD AND OIL PRICES ON STOCK MARKET INDEX RETURNS: THE CASE OF THE MIST COUNTRIES
Pala, Fahrettin; Görgün, Mehmet Ragip; Torusdag, Mustafa; Demirtas, Furkan; Barut, Abdulkadir
The current study explores the impact of global gold price uncertainty on the stock markets of the MIST countries: Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, and T & uuml;rkiye. The study examined the crisis periods that started with the COVID-19 pandemic and continued with the Russia-Ukraine war, which caused uncertainty in gold and oil prices. Based on this, the study's data set consists of the daily closing prices between March 11th, 2020, and January 31st, 2023. The obtained data were analyzed using the Least Squares (ICC) and panel quantile regression (PQR) methods. There is a significant positive correlation between oil prices and oil volatility index with stock prices for the economies of T & uuml;rkiye, Indonesia, and Mexico, and a significant negative correlation between gold prices and gold volatility index with stock prices for developing countries. There is also a significant positive relationship between gold and oil prices and stock prices for the developed country, South Korea's economy. A significant negative correlation has also been proposed between gold and oil volatility indices and South Korean stock prices. This study provides a novel contribution to the literature by examining the impact of simultaneous global crises namely the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war-on the stock market indices of MIST countries through the lens of uncertainty in both gold and oil markets. While most existing studies focus on a single commodity or analyze crises in isolation, this research distinguishes itself by investigating the combined effects of two major global shocks and incorporating both price and volatility-based uncertainty indicators. The findings suggest that policymakers should develop country-specific and differentiated financial stability policies by taking into account the uncertainties in gold and oil markets during crisis periods.
- Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Nanoplastic Translocation Across Biological Barriers (Blood-Brain, Placental, Intestinal): Transport Mechanisms, Tissue-Specific Vulnerabilities, and a Corona-Driven Barrier Selectivity Framework
Berber, Ahmet Ali; Yildiz, Esra; Berber, Nurcan; Kurnaz, Muammer; Kenanoglu, Nihan Akinci
Nanoplastics (NPs; <= 1 & micro;m) have been detected in human placenta, blood, lung, atherosclerotic plaque, testis, semen, olfactory bulb, and brain, shifting the field from environmental description toward mechanistic interrogation of barrier crossing. This review synthesises current evidence on NP translocation across the intestinal epithelium, the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the placental syncytiotrophoblast. We distinguish four evidence categories throughout the review: detection, association, mechanism, and causality. We also apply model-system labels (in silico, in vitro, ex vivo, animal, and human) to every mechanistic claim, so that the strength of each statement can be read off directly. Most current studies use pristine polystyrene nanoplastics at concentrations 3-6 orders of magnitude above plausible human exposure, so the mechanistic conclusions below are hypothesis-generating for human disease rather than definitive. We propose a working conceptual framework-corona-driven barrier selectivity (CDBS)-in which the particle-corona-surface complex, rather than the bare polymer, is hypothesised to dictate which receptor and transport machinery (TfR1, LRP1, FcRn, P-gp/BCRP, caveolae) each barrier engages. CDBS is offered as a hypothesis-stage organising tool requiring experimental validation, not as an established mechanism. We outline reported transport modes, including clathrin- and caveolin-mediated endocytosis, paracellular leakage via ROS-induced tight-junction disassembly, receptor-mediated transcytosis, and the candidate olfactory route. We emphasise that pristine polystyrene-bead doses commonly exceed plausible human exposure by 3-6 orders of magnitude, that detection methods underestimate sub-micrometre particles, and that causal links between NPs and human disease remain hypothesis-generating. A research agenda built on weathered reference materials, microphysiological systems, and integrative human biomarker science is proposed.

Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Külekçi, Elif; Aydinçakir, Emre; Kandemir, Raif; Alçiçek, M. Cihat; Pecha, Mark E.; Sünnetçi, Kadir
The Cebre Rhyolite with an outcropping area up to 12 km(2) is one of the rare extrusions in the Variscan basement of the Sakarya Zone. The unit consists of high-K calc alkaline rhyolites (SiO2 = 74-82 wt.%). Abundant phenocrysts of quartz and K-feldspar are accompanied by subordinate cordierite phenocrysts, rare muscovite microphenocrysts and biotite microcrysts set in a fine-grained groundmass. Three types of rock fragments (xenoliths) have been recognized; (i) porphyritic, (ii) equigranular hypabyssal and (iii) hypocrystalline fragments. Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that the Cebre Rhyolite was extruded at 332.8 +/- 4.38 Ma, which post-dates the Variscan low temperature metamorphism and pre-dates the emplacement of I-type granitic intrusions (325-303 Ma).The samples are strongly peraluminous with A/CNK values ranging from 1.48 to 2.95 and A/NK from 1.49 to 2.99. They have very high K2O (3.72-7.42 wt.%) and Al2O3 (10.77-14.11 wt.%) contents, but very low CaO (0.02-0.21 wt.%), Na2O (0.05-0.78 wt.%) and MgO (0.3-0.21 wt.%) contents. The samples show geochemical affinity with the upper continental crust, e.g., enrichment of large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; K, Rb, U, Th, Pb), depletion of high field strength elements (HFSEs; Nb, Ta, Ti), Sr, P and Eu, but epsilon Nd-(t) values (- 3.06 to - 8.75) and isotope ratios of Sr-(t)((87) Sr/Sr-86 = 0.70499-0.70915) and Pb-(t) (Pb-206/Pb-204 = 16.41-17.570, Pb-207/Pb-204 = 15.54-15.59, Pb-208/Pb-204 = 36.20-37.22) are similar to those of the lower crust. Geochemical and isotope data indicate that the Cebre Rhyolite was generated by melting of metapelitic rocks with some addition of intermediate metaigneous derived magma. As a geodynamic model, we propose that the Variscan Orogeny in Turkey was occurred by collision of Gondwana with an arc/terrane separated from the southern margin of Laurussia. This collision was followed shortly after by splitting of oceanic lithosphere into two pieces and sinking down into asthenosphere. Rapid upwelling of asthenosphere to space emptied by previous oceanic lithosphere provided heat for high temperature metamorphism and anatexis of metasedimentary rocks in the crust. - MakaleAçık Erişim2024The Effect of Conjunctiva-Müller Muscle Resection on Tear Oxidative Stress Levels in Patients with Blepharoptosis
Sert, Seda; Araca, Ceyhun; Mergen, Burak; Ekmekçi, Ozlem Balca
Objectives: To examine changes in tear oxidative stress levels and tear film functions in patients with blepharoptosis and dermatochalasis following conjunctiva-M & uuml;ller muscle resection (CMMR) and blepharoplasty surgeries. Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 32 healthy controls and 62 patients with blepharoptosis or dermatochalasis. CMMR surgery was performed in 20 eyes and upper blepharoplasty was performed in 42 eyes. Tear oxidative stress markers (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG3 and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal [4-HNE3) were quantified by enzyme -linked immunosorbent assay and tear film functions were evaluated preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively. The same assessments were performed in the control group at the same time points. Results: Preoperative tear 8-OHdG and 4-HNE levels were lower in healthy controls (52.8 +/- 13.5 ng/mL and 27.8 +/- 6.4 ng/mL, respectively) compared to patients with dermatochalasis (86.1 +/- 37.2 ng/mL and 29.8 +/- 11.1 ng/mL, respectively) and blepharoptosis (90.4 +/- 39.3 ng/mL and 43.1 +/- 4.2 ng/mL, respectively) (p<0.001). 8-OHdG levels were increased at 1 month after CMMR, while both markers were decreased 1 month postoperatively in the blepharoplasty group (p=0.034). Schirmer 1 and OSDI scores did not change throughout the visits in both patient groups, but a temporary decrease in tear break-up time (TBUT) was observed after CMMR (p=0.017). Conclusion: Dermatochalasis and blepharoptosis were associated with higher tear oxidative stress levels. CMMR surgery caused a temporary decrease in TBUT scores and an increase in oxidative stress in the first postoperative month.

The aim of the study is to examine relationships between shoulder extension-flexion and internal-external rotation strength of professional male handball players with throwing velocity, and the hip extension-flexion strength with horizontal and vertical reactive strength index. Fifteen professional male handball players participating in 1 st League matches took part in the study. The results showed that isometric shoulder flexion and extension strength significantly predicted stable throwing velocity (r (2 )=between 0.27-0.73) and dynamic throwing velocity (r( 2) =between 0.30-0.62). In addition, isometric internal and external rotation strength significantly predicted stable throwing velocity (r (2) =between 0.32-0.54) and dynamic throwing velocity (r (2) =between 0.31-0.44). Moreover, isometric hip extension and flexion strength significantly predicted vertical reactive strength index (r( 2) =between 0.31-0.45) and horizontal reactive strength index (r (2) =between 0.26-0.42). In conclusion, it was observed that shoulder strength has an enhancing effect on handball players' throwing velocity, while hip strength is a determining factor for the reactive strength index. In this context, it is assumed that shoulder weakness during throwing will affect the accuracy and velocity of throwing by disrupting the angular momentum, while weakness in the hip during the jump phase of the throwing motion will negatively affect the explosive power by limiting stabilization during landing.

Ilyasoglu, Huri; Nadzieja, Marcin; Guo, Zheng
The aim of this study was to develop a novel dual-functional stabilizer for food-grade Pickering emulsions by grafting caffeic acid onto chitosan via a free radical mediated method. The grafting of caffeic acid onto chitosan was confirmed by UV-vis absorption spectra, FTIR spectra and H-1 NMR spectra and DSC thermogram. The antioxidant properties of the caffeic acid grafted chitosan (CA-g-Ch) were measured by three in vitro assays. Caffeic acid-grafted chitosan displayed much better Fe2+ chelating property than both chitosan and caffeic acid, and retained comparable DPPH radical scavenging activity as caffeic acid. Moreover, the formation of the CA-g-Ch based emulsion was monitored by the turbidity, zeta potential, and particle size measurements. The CA-g-Ch polymers were found to be pH-responsive. The oil (linoleic acid) in water emulsions with the CA-g-Ch (as emulsifier/Pickering stabilizer) was prepared to examine its potential to stabilize Pickering emulsions, as well as its additive antioxidant properties. The results (zeta potential, mean droplet size, creaming index and TBARS values etc) demonstrated that the CA-g-Ch could act as a dual-functional stabilizer for Pickering emulsions. The emulsions made with the CA-g-Ch were found to be stable at a broad pH range of 3-6. Our findings proved that CA-g-Ch as novel dual-functional polymeric surfactant, may have great potential to find applications in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Erdogan, Ali; Yilmaz, Yavuz; Hocaoglu, Cicek
Social networks have become a very important part of human life in recent years. This situation has led to new definitions such as the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). FOMO can be defined as the concern that others can have a good experience when the person is absent and therefore the person wants to stay on social networks constantly to avoid missing anything. It is especially common in young people. Problematic internet use, psychosocial factors, social network use and anxiety are blamed in its etiology. Family conflicts, loneliness, depression, and low self-efficacy can be said as risk factors. People constantly want to spend time on social networks, daily life activities are blocked and the person's productivity decreases. It has no place in diagnostic classifications. For FOMO, the fear of missing out scale developed by Przybylski can be used. It is reported that FOMO has a significant positive relationship with nomophobia. There is no specific treatment method. There is a need for extensive research on FOMO.

Onturk, Yavuz; Bingol, Erkan; Efek, Engin; Bayrakdaroglu, Yesim; Gorun, Levent
The aim of this study to examine the trait anxiety level of referees in different branches in terms of some variables. For the model of the research, the survey model, one of the quantitative research types, was chosen. While the population of the research is composed of referees working in different branches in Mugla Province, the sample is composed of 167 referees who have been chosen by a randomized sampling method and participated in the research voluntarily. The authors designed a personal information form for the demographical information of the participants. The Trait Anxiety Inventory developed by Spielberger, Gorsuch and Luschene (1) (1970) and adapted to Turkish by Oner and Le Compte (2) (1983) was used to determine the participants' anxiety levels. The data obtained from the form and scale used were analyzed using the SPSS 17 package program. Frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation values were used in the analysis of the data. Data normal distributions were analyzed with Skewness-Kurtosis values. Since the data showed normal distribution, t-test and ANOVA test, which are parametric tests, were used, and the significance level was accepted as p <0.05. According to the findings of the study, while the anxiety levels of the referees showed significant differences in terms of gender, they did not display a significant difference with the variables of age, education level, refereeing time and refereeing classification. Consequently, the trait anxiety levels of female referees are significantly higher in favor of the trait anxiety levels of male referees. This study revealed that anxiety-reducing training should be focused on reducing the trait anxiety situations that female referees experience more than male referees.
