Optimizing compton suppression systems: A parametric monte carlo study of NaI scintillator geometry

Kaya, Ali; Çelik, Necati; Kaya, Selim

Compton suppression systems are widely used to enhance gamma-ray spectral quality in applications such as nuclear safeguards and environmental radioactivity measurements. Although optimization of high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors has been extensively reported, the geometric optimization of secondary sodium iodide [NaI(Tl)] scintillation detectors remains less studied. This work investigates the influence of annular and plug NaI(Tl) detector geometry—length, thickness, and radius—on Compton suppression performance using Monte Carlo simulations. Performance is evaluated in terms of the peak Compton suppression factor (CSFpeak) and total Compton suppression factor (CSFtotal). The results show that CSFpeak and CSFtotal increase with plug length (2–10.2 cm) and annular thickness (1–5.85 cm), with saturation observed beyond approximately 8–10 cm and 4–5 cm, respectively, due to reduced incremental photon absorption. The plug detector radius (3.72–5.1 cm) exhibits a nonlinear effect, with optimal performance achieved at 4.55–4.83 cm, beyond which gains are marginal (<5%). Suboptimal geometries (plug length <6 cm, annular thickness <3 cm, plug radius <4.28 cm) result in 20–60% lower suppression performance, increasing Compton continuum contributions in 662 keV spectra. The optimal configuration—plug length of 8–10 cm, plug radius of 4.55–4.83 cm, and annular thickness of 4–5 cm—achieves more than 90% of maximum CSFpeak and CSFtotal while maintaining a balance between performance and detector volume. These results provide quantitative design guidelines for optimizing NaI(Tl)-based Compton suppression systems for improved gamma-ray spectrometry performance.

La2O3 addition's effect on sodium-barium borosilicate glasses' radiation shielding capability: WinXCOM and EGS4 Monte Carlo analysis

    Kaya, Selim

This study thoroughly investigated the impact of La2O₃ inclusion on the radiation shielding effectiveness of sodium-barium borosilicate glasses using EGS4 Monte Carlo simulations and WinXCOM computations. The gamma-ray shielding behavior of a set of glass samples was systematically investigated over a wide photon energy interval ranging from 50 to 2506 keV. The glass compositions were modified through the stepwise substitution of Na₂O with La₂O₃. Key radiation interaction and shielding metrics—including the mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ), half-value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), radiation protection efficiency (RPE), effective atomic number (Zeff), and kerma coefficients—were determined and comparatively evaluated. The results demonstrate that the progressive incorporation of La₂O₃ leads to a marked enhancement in radiation shielding performance, particularly within the low-and intermediate-photon energy ranges where photoelectric interactions prevail. The inclusion of La₂O₃ results in increased material density, μ/ρ, Zeff, and kerma values, while simultaneously reducing (HVL) and MFP.In conclusion, sodium-barium borosilicate glasses treated with La₂O₃ have better radiation attenuation capacities than their La₂O₃-free counterparts. These results validate the effectiveness of La₂O₃ substitution as an approach for customizing borosilicate glass systems for applications that need improved radiation shielding.

Enhancing precision of low-cost detectors via machine learning for accurate mass attenuation coefficient estimation

    Düzgün, İ.; Küçük, M.A.; Kaya, S.; Çelik, N.

Low-cost NaI(Tl) detectors are practical for gamma-ray spectrometry but their limited energy resolution can introduce systematic errors in mass attenuation coefficient measurements when scattered photons are included in the peak region. This study proposes a machine-learning correction framework that maps NaI(Tl)-derived attenuation coefficients to XCOM-based HPGe-equivalent reference values through a dimensionless correction factor. An EGS4/XCOM dataset of 756 model-development configurations, covering 18 atomic numbers, six monoenergetic photon energies, and seven collimator radii, was used to train twelve regression models and evaluate them over 60 randomized train–validation–test cycles. Sodium and Bismuth were withheld for external material-wise validation. Gaussian Process Regression with a Matérn 5/2 kernel provided the best overall testing performance. For the withheld materials, the correction reduced the mean deviation from XCOM references from 3.07% to 0.83%, supporting its use as a practical correction layer for low-cost attenuation measurements.

A combined Monte Carlo, analytical, and experimental study of true coincidence summing correction factors for 152Eu

Çelik, Necati; Ali, Ahmed H.; Apaydin, Gokhan; Çevik, Ugur; Açikel, Selami

The radionuclide 152Eu presents a significant challenge in gamma-ray spectrometry due to its complex decay scheme and significant true coincidence summing (TCS) effects, especially in close-measurement geometries. This study presents a comprehensive investigation into TCS correction factors for the principal gamma-ray lines of 152Eu using tripartite methodology: a custom Monte Carlo (MC) simulation based on the EGS4 system, an established analytical method, and direct experimental measurements. The MC simulation explicitly models the complete decay process, including branching ratios, gamma emissions, internal conversion, and subsequent X-ray emissions for both decay branches (beta-minus to 152Gd and EC to 152Sm). Experimentally, correction factors were derived using a well-characterized point source measured at multiple distances with a coaxial HPGe detector. The analytical, method based on probabilistic analysis of the decay scheme, served as an examination. Results demonstrate that the analytical method underestimated the TCS correction factors, particularly for low-energy lines such as 121.78 keV, where it predicted a mere 0.78 % correction compared to 25.5 and 23.5 % from MC and experiment, respectively. This discrepancy is attributed to the analytical method's neglect of gamma-X ray coincidences and the internal conversion effects. In contrast, the MC simulation showed remarkable agreement with experimental results across all energies, validating its capability to accurately model the full complexity of TCS effects. The study concludes that while analytical methods offer rapid estimates, MC simulations, especially when experimentally validated, are essential for achieving metrological accuracy in the gamma-ray spectrometric analysis of complex radionuclides like 152Eu.

Computational gamma-ray attenuation and fast-neutron removal cross-section assessment of CrN, AlCrN and AlTiCrN ceramic coatings using EGS4 Monte Carlo and Phy-X/PSD

Sirin, Murat; Kaya, Selim; Aktarer, Semih Mahmut; Baltas, Hasan; Küçükömeroglu, Tevfik

In this study, the computationally predicted gamma-ray attenuation behavior and fast-neutron removal cross-section characteristics of micrometre-scale CrN, AlCrN, and AlTiCrN ceramic coatings produced via cathodic arc evaporation were investigated. The shielding parameters were not measured by direct gammaor neutron-transmission experiments; instead, mass attenuation coefficients (MAC, mu/rho) in the 0.05-2.50 MeV range were obtained from EGS4 Monte Carlo simulations and Phy-X/PSD calculations, and the agreement between the two computational datasets was evaluated. Energy-dependent attenuation parameters, including half-value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number (Zeff), radiation protection efficiency (RPE), and kerma coefficients, were calculated. Statistical comparison showed good consistency between EGS4 and Phy-X/PSD for MAC, RPE, HVL, MFP, and kerma coefficients, whereas Zeff exhibited larger method-dependent deviations. All coatings showed higher attenuation at low photon energies due to the photoelectric effect, while Compton scattering dominated at intermediate energies. Among the investigated coatings, CrN exhibited the most favorable calculated gamma-ray attenuation indicators, with lower HVL and MFP values and higher RPE values. The macroscopic fast-neutron removal cross-section (Sigma R) was also calculated as a first-order neutron attenuation indicator, and CrN showed the highest Sigma R value. Considering their limited thickness of approximately 2.3-2.8 mu m, these coatings should not be regarded as replacements for conventional bulk radiation shields. Instead, nitride-based ceramic coatings may serve as secondary or multifunctional surface layers in space-restricted components requiring local radiation attenuation and mechanical durability.

Interpretable machine learning for rapid prediction and calibration of HPGe detector efficiency: a physics-informed approach and online platform

Yesilkanat, Cafer Mert; Celik, Necati; Celik, Ahmet; Cevik, Ugur

This study introduces a novel, physics-informed, and calibration-friendly hybrid machine learning framework for the rapid and accurate prediction of the Full Energy Peak (FEP) efficiency in High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. To overcome the limitations of conventional “black-box” models, our two-stage approach first represents the FEP efficiency curve using a physically interpretable logarithmic polynomial. Subsequently, machine learning models were trained to predict the polynomial coefficients directly from the detector geometric parameters using a comprehensive dataset generated via Monte Carlo simulations. Among the various algorithms tested, the Generalized Linear Model yielded superior performance, achieving R2 values of 0.975–0.992 for the coefficients. While raw model predictions showed expected variability, a key feature of our framework (a single-point calibration protocol using one known efficiency value) dramatically improved accuracy, reducing the mean absolute percentage error by an average of 80% on the independent test data. The calibrated model was further validated using an experimental detector. The entire framework was deployed as a user-friendly online platform, enabling researchers to instantly generate and calibrate efficiency curves. Our work successfully harmonizes interpretability, speed, and accuracy, offering a powerful tool for the design, optimization, and routine calibration of HPGe detectors.

A quantitative analysis on the effect of crystal parameters on full energy peak efficiency of a coaxial high purity Germanium detector for the energy range 50 keV-2.5 MeV

    Çelik, Necati

High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors are essential instruments in gamma-ray spectrometry, offering high sensitivity and exceptional energy resolution. The full-energy-peak (FEP) efficiency is a critical parameter that influences the accuracy of activity concentration measurements of radionuclides. This study examines the FEP efficiency of a coaxial HPGe detector, focusing on variations in crystal length, crystal radius, and crystal hole dimensions. For varying crystal lengths, the efficiency values show negligible differences at low energy (50 keV) but significant increases at higher energies, indicating that longer crystal lengths enhance efficiency. Similarly, the efficiency increases with larger crystal radii across all energy levels suggesting substantial efficiency gains even at low energies. However, variations in crystal hole radius and depth, exhibit minimal impact on FEP efficiency across all tested energy levels. These findings highlight that optimizing crystal length and radius is more crucial for changing detector efficiency compared to modifying hole dimensions, providing valuable insights for optimizing Monte Carlo models and detector design.

A New Approach for Determination of Volumetric Water Content in Soil Samples by Gamma-Ray Transmission

Celik, Necati; Altin, Duygu; Cevik, Ugur

A new method was presented for the purpose of volumetric water content determination in any soil sample by gamma-ray transmission. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique was used to determine the functional behavior of the linear attenuation coefficient of soil samples having different water contents for three soil samples. Using this functional behavior, the linear attenuation coefficients of dry soil and water were obtained from the intercept and the slope, respectively. It was experimentally shown that the mass attenuation coefficients of soil samples were not sensitive to the chemical composition but only to the physical density. This independence was exploited in this study to obtain the linear attenuation coefficient of a completely dry soil which was found to be 0.1409, 0.1274, and 0.1657 cm−1 for Gumushane, Ardahan, and Trabzon soil, respectively. The linear attenuation coefficient of water was determined to be 0.09 cm−1. Then, the volumetric water contents were obtained by measuring the gamma-ray intensities passed through three wet soil samples. The results were found to be 0.186, 0.182, and 0.214 cm3 cm−3 for Gumushane, Ardahan, and Trabzon soil, respectively. The results obtained by the method introduced were compared with the results obtained using gravimetric method. A very good agreement was observed.

Reliabilities of distances describing bolt placement for high strength steel connections

    Ztekin, Ertekin Ö.

In the bolted connections, bolt placements are generally described and are generally made in the direction of design effects and in the perpendicular direction to design effects. In these both directions, the reliability of the distance of bolts to the edges of connection plate and the distance of bolts to each other is investigated for high strength steel connections built up with high strength bolts in this study. For this purpose, simple SL (bearing type shear connection) and SLP (bearing type shear connection for body-fit bolts) type steel connections with St 52 grade steel plates with 8 different thicknesses and with 8.8D grade high strength bolts (HV) were constituted and analyzed under H (Dead Loads+Live Loads+Snow Loads+ Roof Loads) and HZ (H Loads+Wind Loads+Earthquake Loads) loadings. Geometric properties, material properties and design actions were taken as random variables. Monte Carlo Simulation method was used to compute failure risk and the first order second moment method was used to determine the reliability indexes of those different distances describing the placement of bolts. Results obtained from computations have been presented in graphics and in a Table. Then, they were compared with some values proposed by some structural codes. Finally, new equations were constituted for minimum and maximum values of distances describing bolt placement by regression analyses performed on those results.

Probabilistic sensitivity analysis of suspension bridges to near-fault ground motion

    Çavdar, Özlem

The sensitivities of a structural response due to variation of its design parameters are prerequisite in the majority of the algorithms used for fundamental problems in engineering as system uncertainties, identification and probabilistic assessments etc. The paper presents the concept of probabilistic sensitivity of suspension bridges with respect to near-fault ground motion. In near field earthquake ground motions, large amplitude spectral accelerations can occur at long periods where many suspension bridges have significant structural response modes. Two different types of suspension bridges, which are Bosporus and Humber bridges, are selected to investigate the near-fault ground motion effects on suspension bridges random response sensitivity analysis. The modulus of elasticity is selected as random design variable. Strong ground motion records of Kocaeli, Northridge and Erzincan earthquakes are selected for the analyses. The stochastic sensitivity displacements and internal forces are determined by using the stochastic sensitivity finite element method and Monte Carlo simulation method. The stochastic sensitivity displacements and responses obtained from the two different suspension bridges subjected to these near-fault strong-ground motions are compared with each other. It is seen from the results that near-fault ground motions have different impacts stochastic sensitivity responses of suspension bridges. The stochastic sensitivity information provides a deeper insight into the structural design and it can be used as a basis for decision-making.

Virtual point detector for HPGe detectors for 26.6-1332 keV photon energies by experiment and Monte Carlo simulation

    Çelik, N.; Çevik, U.; Küçükömeroğlu, B.

Variation of virtual point detector (VPD) position inside HPGe detector as a function of source photon energy for the energy range from 26.6 to 1,332 keV was investigated. Although VPD concept was well established for HPGe detectors from 59.5 to 10 MeV, a new attempt was made to obtain VPD positions for photon energies below 59.5 keV. It was found that VPD position shows different functional behavior for the energy ranges 26.6-59.5 keV and 59.5-1,332 keV. The VPD position decreases with increasing energy for 26.6, 31.7, 36.4, and 37.3 keV and increases with the energy until it reaches a plateau. The functional behavior of VPD position for the energy range 26.6-59.5 keV was attributed to the dead layer thickness of the Ge crystal. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to investigate the behavior of VPD position with various dead layer thickness ranging from 100 to 800 μm. It was seen that VPD position increases with increasing energy for 31.7, 59.5, and 80.1 keV more significant at relatively lower energies, but constant for the energies 661-1,332 keV.

Effects of random material and geometrical properties on structural safety of steel-concrete composite systems

Çavdar, Özlem; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Çavdar, Ahmet

A stochastic finite element-based algorithm for probabilistic analysis of structural systems made of composite sections with random material and geometrical properties under earthquake forces is proposed in this paper. Uncertainties in the structural parameters can be taken into account in this algorithm. For the perturbation-based stochastic finite element method, only the first two moments of random variables need to be known, and is numerically much more efficient and feasible than simulation techniques. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm are validated by comparison with results of Monte Carlo simulation method. A summary of stiffness matrix formulation and perturbation-based stochastic finite element dynamic analysis formulation of structural systems made of composite sections is given. These are followed by suitable numerical examples, which indicate that employment of such a dynamic stochastic finite element method leads to significant economical, efficient and accurate solutions for the dynamic analysis of composite structures with stochastic parameters under earthquake forces.

Stochastic finite element analysis of structural systems with partially restrained connections subjected to seismic loads

Çavdar, Özlem; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Çavdar, Ahmet; Kartal, Murat Emre

The present paper investigates the stochastic seismic responses of steel structure systems with Partially Restrained (PR) connections by using Perturbation based Stochastic Finite Element (PSFEM) method. A stiffness matrix formulation of steel systems with PR connections and PSFEM and MCS formulations of structural systems are given. Based on the formulations, a computer program in FORTRAN language has been developed, and stochastic seismic analyses of steel frame and bridge systems have been performed for different types of connections. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are assumed to be random variables in the analyses. The Kocaeli earthquake occurred in 1999 is considered as a ground motion. The connection parameters, material and geometrical properties are considered to be random variables. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed SFEM algorithm are validated by comparison with results of Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method.
