Kanat, Öztürk Özdemir; Karatay, Ertuğrul; Köse, Oğuz; Oktay, Tuğrul

In this article, combined active flow control system and flight control system design for morphing unmanned aerial vehicles is applied for the first time for autonomous flight performance maximization. For this purpose, longitudinal and lateral dynamics modeling of morphing unmanned aerial vehicle having active flow control manufactured in Erciyes University, Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Model Aircraft Laboratory is considered in order to obtain simulation environments. Our produced morphing unmanned aerial vehicle is called as ZANKA-II, which has a mass of 6.5 kg, range of 30 km, endurance of 0.5 h, and ceiling altitude of 6000 m. von Karman turbulence modeling is used in order to model atmospheric turbulence during flight in both longitudinal and lateral simulation environments. A stochastic optimization method called as simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation is also applied for the first time in order to obtain optimum dimensions of morphing parameters (i.e. extension ratios of wingspan and tail span), optimum positions of blowers, and optimum magnitudes of longitudinal and lateral controllers' gains (i.e. P, I, and D gains) while minimizing cost index capturing terms for both longitudinal and lateral autonomous flight performances and there exist lower and upper constraints on all optimization variables in the literature.

The effect of TiO2 coating on biological NiTi alloys after micro-arc oxidation treatment for corrosion resistance

Sukuroglu, Ebru Emine; Sukuroglu, Suleyman; Akar, Kubra; Totik, Yasar; Efeoglu, Ihsan; Arslan, Ersin

NiTi alloys exhibit good properties, such as shape memory behavior, high corrosion resistant, having the closest elasticity modulus of a human bone and superior biocompatibility properties. However, the surface problems that arise during the use of this alloy limit the usage in the industry and health sector. In recent years, micro-arc oxidation method is used to improve the surface properties and increase the usage of these alloys. In this study, the TiO2 coatings were deposited on the NiTi substrates. The surface topography, morphology, crystallographic structure, and thickness of the coatings were determined using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion properties were investigated using potentiostat test unit in two different media such as NaCl solution and simulated body fluid. The results show that the coated samples have higher corrosion resistance than uncoated samples in the two different media.

Effect of plasma nitriding treatment on structural, tribological and electrochemical properties of commercially pure titanium

    Çelik, Ilhan; Karakan, Mehmet

In this study, plasma nitriding treatment was applied to commercially pure titanium (Grade 2). Structural properties, electrochemical and tribological behaviours of the nitrided pure titanium specimens were comparatively investigated. Microstructure and morphology of the plasma nitrided specimens were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, corrosion tests were conducted in Ringer's solution, which represents a human body environment, to determine electrochemical properties. Then, tribological and frictional properties were investigated using pin-on-disc tribometer, and a micro-hardness tester was used to measure the hardness of the coatings. The results showed that plasma nitrided specimens exhibited higher surface hardness than the untreated specimens did. In addition, the plasma nitrided specimens at 700 °C presented significantly better performance than the other plasma nitrided specimens (at 500 °C and 600 °C) under dry wear conditions. Moreover, corrosion test results showed that corrosion behaviours of untreated and nitrided samples had similar characteristic.

Indoor radon and gamma spectrometric measurements for the Erzincan Basin on North Anatolian Fault Zone, Turkey

    Kucukomeroglu, B.; Ozturk, E.; Damla, N.; Celik, N.; Duran, S. Uzun; Cevik, U.; Taskin, H.; Albayrak, N.

Indoor radon and soil radioactivity levels were determined for Erzincan province in Turkey. Indoor radon concentrations were determined in 89 dwellings using CR-39 passive Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTDs) for four seasons. The mean annual 222Rn activity concentration was found to be 119 Bq.m-'3. In the winter season, indoor radon concentrations showed the highest values while the lowest values were observed in the summer season. A model was used to predict the number of lung cancer incidences due to inhalation of radon. The findings have indicated that radon is responsible for 13% of lung cancer incidences occurring in the Erzincan province. Since indoor radon concentration correlates with 226Ra content in soil beneath the dwellings, soil samples were collected near the houses where indoor radon measurements were performed in order to seek a correlation. The 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs activity concentration values were 52, 26, 649 and 9 Bq.kg-'1, respectively. The annual effective dose due to naturally occurring radionuclides was around 82 μSv.y-'1 which is higher than the world average value of 70 μSv.y-'1. The results of the present study are expected to be a useful baseline data for future studies.

Investigation of structural and tribological properties of electroless Ni-B coated pure titanium

Çelik, Ilhan; Karakan, Mehmet; Bülbül, Ferhat

In the present study, the surface of commercial pure (Grade 2) titanium was coated with electroless Ni-B and, then, it was subjected to heat treatment for an hour at 400°. The surface morphology, microstructure and phase identification were analysed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Wear behaviour characterisation was carried out using a ball-on-disc tribometer. The results of the analyses showed that the electroless Ni-B coating had a significantly amorphous structure in the as-deposited condition. It was also determined that the coating structure crystallised after the heat treatment and wear resistance of pure titanium increased after electroless Ni-B coating. Particularly, upon the heat treatment, it was observed that wear resistance and surface hardness of pure titanium considerably increased.

Determination of biological performance, dimensional stability, mechanical and thermal properties of wood-plastic composites produced from recycled chromated copper arsenate-treated wood

Tascioglu, Cihat; Tufan, Mursit; Yalcin, Mesut; Sen, Selim

The aim of this study was to investigate the dimensional stability, mechanical and biological performance and thermal degradation of wood-plastic composites made from high-density polyethylene and recycled wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA), a commonly used wood preservative chemical. Virgin pine wood samples were also prepared with and without a coupling agent and used as the control group. Samples of CCA-treated Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) with varying wood content were produced by adding different ratios of the coupling agent. The recycled CCA-treated wood-filled composites exhibited better flexural and tensile strength properties and dimensional stability than the control group, whilst their impact strength was less. Biological test values showed improved durability against termites and fungus with the recycled CCA-treated wood-filled composites. In addition, the leaching of heavy metals was significantly diminished when the coupling agent was utilized at a level of 5% (w/w), thus presenting a much lower impact on the environment.

Menteşe, Umit; Turan, Ibrahim; Usta, Sefer; Demir, Selim; Koral, Özgür; Öztaş Menteşe, Seda; Çavuşoǧlu, Ismail Gökhan; Karahan, Süleyman Caner; Alver, Ahmet; Doǧan, Orhan Veli

The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidant-antioxidant balance in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Forty-two consecutive patients with AAA and 46 control subjects were included. Total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS) levels were measured and the oxidative stress index (OSI) value determined. Serum TOS and OSI values in patients with AAA were higher than those in the controls (p<0.001, p<0.001, respectively). There was a positive correlation between abdominal aortic diameters, serum TOS levels (r=0.592, p<0.001) and OSI values (r=0.598, p<0.001). A cut-off value of 17.68 μmol H2O2 equivalent/L for TOS was associated with 86% sensitivity and 83% specificity and a cut-off value of 1.77 for OSI was associated with 86% sensitivity and 81% specificity for predicting AAA. Systemic oxidative imbalance develops in patients with AAA, particularly as a result of an increase in TOS.
