Foreign Aid, Institutions, and Economic Performance in Developing Countries

    Hayaloglu, Pinar

Although official development assistance presents a solution for developing countries to overcome the lack of capital, there is no consensus in the literature on the effectiveness of foreign aid. Moreover, opinions claiming that aid can only affect growth positively under certain conditions see institutional quality as an essential aspect that boosts the positive impact of aid. This study examines the relationships between foreign aid, institutional structure, and economic performance for 80 countries in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. It is found that official development assistance and the quality of institutional structure in the sample countries affect economic growth positively. It also provides some suggestive evidence showing that foreign aid has a positive effect on the institutional structure.

Relationship between Institutional Quality and Corruption: The Case of Turkey

    Çiçen, Yildirim Beyazit

The relationship between the level of corruption and the quality of Turkey's institutional structure was investigated in this study. Using quarterly data between 1984-2015, RALS-ADF unit root and RALS-EG cointegration tests were used to determine if there is a relationship between these variables in Turkey. Corruption level is the dependent variable, institutional quality is the independent variable, and the total production index is the control variable. The first analysis included both the coalition and single-party periods. Also, a separate analysis was carried out for the coalition period 1984-2002. There was no correlation between corruption and institutional quality in either analysis.

Doganay, Muharrem Akin; Recepoglu, Mursit; Deger, Mustafa Kemal

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between exchange rate volatility and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Turkey that adopting liberal policies in the post-1980 period. In this study, the relationships between FDI and exchange rate volatility were determined by symmetric (Fourier Toda-Yamamoto) and asymmetric (Hatemi-J) causality tests using the monthly data for the period of 2001:M1 - 2020:M2. According to the symmetric causality test results, there is a one-way relationship from FDI to exchange rate volatility. According to the results of the asymmetric causality test, there are two-way and significant causal relationships between the variables of FDI and exchange rate volatility. These results show the importance of reducing exchange rate volatility for the Turkish economy.

Determinants of Out of Pocket Health Expenditure in Turkey: Unconditional Quantile Regression

    Ipek, Egemen

Out-of-pocket health expenditures include direct and indirect payments made by individuals for health goods and services. In this study, the determinants of out-of-pocket health expenditures, which are one of the most important sources of health expenditures financing, are investigated with the data of 2003-2015 Household Budget Survey using the Unconditional Quantitative Regression method proposed by Firpo et al. (2009). This method allows to produce generalizable and interpretable results in terms of political and general society compared with conditional quantitative regression methods. The most important result obtained from the study is that conditional quantitative regression method gives more consistent results than unconditional quantitative and least squares regression methods in the analyzes based on the right-skewed distribution observations such as out-of-pocket health expenditures.

The Relationship Between Female Labor Force Participation and Labor Productivity: Panel Data Analysis

Koyuncu, Julide Yalcinkaya; Yilmaz, Rasim; Ünver, Mustafa

We examine the relationship between various indicators of female labor force participation and labor productivity. We test the hypothesis that labor productivity boosts as the female employment increases by exploiting a panel data set including the period 1985 to 2010 and 111 countries and using three labor productivity indicators and three female labor force participation indicators. We identified a positive correlation between female labor force participation indicators and labor productivity. This finding is statistically significant and valid for three different productivity indicators and three different female labor force participation indicators. Thus, the results suggest that female labor force participation increases labor productivity, controlling for other factors that may contribute to labor productivity.

Is There a Causality Relationship Between Budget Deficit and Inflation Ratio During High Inflation Period? Case of Turkey Between 1978 and 2002

    Dogru, Bulent

In this study it is analyzed whether there is a cause-and-effect relationship between inflation and budget deficit in Turkey with the annual data covering the time period between 19782002 when inflation was high and chronic. Econometric methods used in the study is based on the Johansen co-integration analysis and Granger causality connected error correction model. Empirical results suggest that in the longrun budget deficit and inflation is co-integrated, while budget deficit is Granger cause of inflation in short-run. However, inflation is not Granger cause of budget deficit. In other wordse causality is unilateral. The research also found that, response of inflation to a percentage increase in budget deficit is greater than ten percent in short-run.

Do Exchange Rates and Budget Deficit Lead to Inflation? A Panel Causality Analysis on Developing Asian Countries

Dogru, Bulent; Recepoglu, Mursit; Çelik, Orkun

In developing economies, budget deficit and exchange rates can lead inflation through shallow financial markets. In this study it is tested whether budget deficit and exchange rates cause inflation in long-run and short-run for 22 developing Asian countries for the time period of 1980 and 2011. The reason why we select all the developing countries from one region is that we assume all countries have fixed unit effect in the models. In this study we use panel cointegration, error correction model and panel causality methods as empiric test. Findings suggest that in short-run there is no causality running from exchange rate and budget deficit to inflation but in long-run budget deficit and exchange rates cause inflation.
