The selection of transport policies by countries is critical both for international relations and for the implementation of effective and sustainable transport practices. Countries consider numerous parameters when deciding on transport policies. This study aims to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) to assist countries in selecting transport policies and to demonstrate its applicability. The primary motivation of the research is to identify transport policies for Russia's Arctic region and to determine the best alternative policy based on expert evaluations. For this purpose, the IF-SIWEC-ARLON (Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets - Simple Weight Calculation - Alternative Ranking Using Two-Step Logarithmic Normalization) hybrid method was developed as a DSS in this study. To implement this hybrid method, a decision model incorporating experts, criteria, and transport policies was first established. The contribution levels of experts to the decision-making process were calculated using IF sets. Next, the criteria weights were determined using the IF-SIWEC approach. Finally, the ranking of transport policies was carried out using the IF-ARLON method. An algorithm representing the application of this hybrid method was developed and applied to a case study focusing on Russia's transport policy selection process of Northern Sea Route (NSR) in the Arctic region. The results supported the successful application of the IF-SIWEC-ARLON hybrid method. Its robustness was tested through sensitivity analysis scenarios, while the consistency of the findings was verified via comparative analyses. The study concluded that the best transport policy for Russia's Arctic region is Improved regulatory control with strategic international partnerships, with the most influential criterion in the decision process identified as State interests, security, and sovereignty..

Managers' dispositions toward formal contracts: A cross-country examination

Stefanidis, Abraham; Banai, Moshe; Newburry, William; Fainshmidt, Stav; Richter, Ulf Henning; Schinzel, Ursula; Kong, Yin; Erkus, Ahmet; Shakirova, Svetlana; Ozbek, Mehmet Ferhat

This study integrates institutional and dispositional theories to develop a multilevel model predicting that managers' endorsement of formal contracts increases with the quality of formal institutions. This effect is contingent upon managerial dispositions of ethical idealism and interpersonal trust, which provide a morally driven override of uncertainty and a substitute source of certainty in business practices, respectively. We test our arguments on hand-collected data from 3,652 manager-negotiators in 16 countries. We find that managers endorse formal contracts when they are embedded in contexts with high quality contract enforcement institutions, but this effect diminishes substantially among ethically idealistic managers. These results suggest that an understanding of managers' reliance on formal contracts requires multilevel theory informed by how managerial dispositions interact with the formal institutional context.

Cirik, Vildan Apaydin; Bulut, Elif; Aksoy, Bahar; Coemert, Hatice Sonay Yalcin; Pate, Joshua W.

Background and purpose: Pain experiences in childhood are very likely to be reflected in adulthood. The early evaluation of the concept of pain in children may eventually lead to.better patient outcomes in the future. Therefore, we aimed to culturally and developmentally adapt the Concept of Pain Inventory for Children (COPI) for Turkish children. Methods: This descriptive, correlational study was conducted with 239 post-operative children aged 8-12 years between June and December 2021. The research adhered to COSMIN guidelines. The data were collected using a descriptive information form and the COPI. Factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and item-total score analysis were used for the data analysis. Results: The resulting unidimensional scale consists of 12 items in Turkish. The scale explained 65% of the total variance. The exploratory factor analysis showed that the factor loadings of items ranged from 0.64 to 0.91. The confirmatory factor analysis showed that the factor loadings of items ranged from 0.66 to 0.92. Goodness of fit indexes were found to be as follows: Normed Fit Index >0.90; Incremental Fit Index >0.90; Comparative Fit Index >0.90; and the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation <0.08. The total Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was 0.78 (reliable). Conclusions: The 12-item Turkish translation of the COPI was deemed valid and reliable in 8-12-year-old children in a post-operative setting. Practice implications: Evaluation of children's pain concepts during childhood may contribute to the identification of conceptual gaps for pain science education.(c) 2022 Elsevier Inc. The effects of ownership concentration and institutional distance on the foreign entry ownership strategy of Turkish MNEs

Ilhan-Nas, Tulay; Okan, Tarhan; Tatoglu, Ekrem; Demirbag, Mehmet; Glaister, Keith W.

We investigate how ownership concentration and institutional distance both directly influence the equity-based ownership strategies of a sample of Turkish MNEs, and also how institutional differences moderate the link between ownership concentration and the equity-based ownership strategies of these firms. The findings suggest that neither ownership concentration nor institutional distance significantly affects the level of equity ownership. Although institutional distance variables have no direct effects on equity ownership, they tend to moderate the relationships between the ownership concentration and foreign equity ownership strategy of Turkish MNEs. In particular, we provide evidence that the regulative and normative dimensions of institutional distance affect the strength of the relationships between equity ownership strategy of MNEs and ownership concentration more so than the cognitive dimension of institutional distance.

Physicochemical, bioactive, and sensory properties of persimmon-based ice cream: Technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution to determine optimum concentration

Karaman, Safa; Toker, Ömer Said; Yüksel, Ferhat; Çam, Mustafa; Kayacier, Ahmed; Dogan, Mahmut

In the present study, persimmon puree was incorporated into the ice cream mix at different concentrations (8, 16, 24, 32, and 40%) and some physicochemical (dry matter, ash, protein, pH, sugar, fat, mineral, color, and viscosity), textural (hardness, stickiness, and work of penetration), bioactive (antiradical activity and total phenolic content), and sensory properties of samples were investigated. The technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution approach was used for the determination of optimum persimmon puree concentration based on the sensory and bioactive characteristics of final products. Increase in persimmon puree resulted in a decrease in the dry matter, ash, fat, protein contents, and viscosity of ice cream mix. Glucose, fructose, sucrose, and lactose were determined to be major sugars in the ice cream samples including persimmon and increase in persimmon puree concentration increased the fructose and glucose content. Better melting properties and textural characteristics were observed for the samples with the addition of persimmon. Magnesium, K, and Ca were determined to be major minerals in the samples and only K concentration increased with the increase in persimmon content. Bioactive properties of ice cream samples improved and, in general, acetone-water extracts showed higher bioactivity compared with ones obtained using methanol-water extracts. The technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution approach showed that the most preferred sample was the ice cream containing 24% persimmon puree.

The comparison of different mathematical methods to determine the BOD parameters, a new developed method and impacts of these parameters variations on the design of WWTPs

Sibil, Rahim; Berkun, Mehmet; Bekiroglu, Serkan

One of the most common tests for the determination of strength and organic content of wastewater is the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). This test is widely applied to define organic water pollution and to control the performance of wastewater treatment plants. Generally, BOD is standardized by the measurement of oxygen consumption in 5days (BOD5). But, determination of the ultimate biochemical oxygen demand (BODu), which is taken 28days and the reaction rate constant (k) are necessary to understand the organic strength of the wastewater. In this study, the different mathematical methods in order to determine the BOD parameters (BODu, k) and two different BOD test method (respirometer and dilution method) are investigated comparatively. Also, a new method based on cubic spline method to estimate ultimate BOD values is developed. Moreover, the impacts of BOD parameters on the design of an activated sludge and aerated lagoon systems are analyzed by using a written user-friend program, which is developed for designing WWTPs by the mean of C++ programming language.Analytical results show that there is a satisfactory linear relationship between respirometric and dilution BOD values. Also, the mathematical methods, including new developed method generally provide consistent results with high correlation coefficients. On the other hand, it is found that LOG differences method for respirometric test and the new developed method for dilution test do not give good correlation coefficients. Moreover, activated sludge and aerated lagoons systems' sizes show significant changing depending on the variations of the BOD parameters. Consequently, BOD parameters show significant changes depending on the different test and mathematical methods. Therefore, the changing of these parameters impact a lot of situation such as ultimate BOD estimation, the wastewater treatment plants design, the dimensions of the plants and cost of the plants.

Characterization of novel VIM carbapenemase, VIM-38, and first detection of GES-5 carbapenem-hydrolyzing β-lactamases in Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Turkey

Iraz, Meryem; Duzgun, Azer Ozad; Cicek, Aysegul Copur; Bonnin, Remy A.; Ceylan, Aysenur; Saral, Aysegul; Nordmann, Patrice; Sandalli, Cemal

Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were collected form a Turkish hospital. Antimicrobial susceptibility was performed using the Vitek 2 Compact system, and 24 isolates were categorized as multidrug resistant (n = 18), extensively-drug resistant (n = 5), or pan-drug resistant (n = I). PCR and DNA sequence analysis revealed that 1 strain possessed the bla(GES-5) and another carried a novel bla(VIM) variant, named VIM-38. This new gene exhibited 1 amino acid substitution (Ala265Val) in comparison to its closest variant, VIM-5. Both VIM encoding genes were clones and demonstrated similar susceptibility profile when expressed in identical background. The presence of VIM-38 increases the diversity of carbapenemases in Turkey. A numeric-analytic method for time-fractional Swift-Hohenberg (S-H) equation with modified Riemann-Liouville derivative

    Merdan, Mehmet

In this paper, the fractional variational iteration method (FVIM) was applied to obtain the approximate solutions of time-fractional Swift-Hohenberg (S-H) equation with modified Riemann-Liouville derivative. A new application of fractional variational iteration method (FVIM) was extended to derive analytical solutions in the form of a series for these equations. Numerical results showed the FVIM is powerful, reliable and effective method when applied strongly nonlinear equations with modified Riemann-Liouville derivative.

A study on 3-D stress distributions in the bi-adhesively bonded T-joints

Akpinar, Salih; Aydin, Murat Demir; Özel, Adnan

In this study, the normal (σx,. σy,. σz) and shear stress (τxy,. τyz,. τzx) distributions occurring in a bi-adhesively bonded T-joint with was investigated via a non-linear three dimensional finite element analysis. For this purpose, first of all, using 2024-T3 aluminum alloy as the adherend and the support, a two-part paste (DP 460) and a film type (SBT 9244) as adhesive, two different types of T-joint samples (single-adhesively bonded T-joint and bi-adhesively bonded T-joint) were produced for experimental studies. After experimental studies on the three different T-joint types were conducted, stress analyses in the T-joints were performed with a three-dimensional finite element analysis by considering the geometrical non-linearity and the material non-linearities of the adhesive (DP460 and SBT9244) and adherend (AA2024-T3). Finally, for a given adherend, the lower the stiffness of the adhesive used in the overlap, the lower the stress concentration, leading to potentially higher joint strength. The use of relatively low stiffness adhesives at the ends of the overlap in a bi-adhesive can decrease the stress concentration and, therefore, potentially lead to higher joint strength.

Construction stage analysis of Humber Suspension Bridge

Adanur, Süleyman; Günaydin, Murat; Altunişik, Ahmet Can; Sevim, Bariş

Suspension bridges are widely used as engineering structures to across long spans and give rise to the usage of domains under the bridge. In the finite element analyses of suspension bridges, it is assumed that the structure is built and loaded in a second. However, this type of analysis does not always give the reliable and healthy solutions. Because, construction period of this type of the structures continue along time and loads may be changed during this period. Therefore, construction stages and time dependent material properties should be considered in the analysis to obtain the reliable and healthy results. This paper presents the construction stage analysis of suspension bridges using time dependent material properties. For this purpose, Humber Suspension Bridge built near Kingston upon Hull, England is chosen as an example. Finite element model of the bridge is constituted using SAP2000 program considering project drawings. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength of steel and concrete and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Time dependent material properties are considered as compressive strength, aging, shrinkage and creep for concrete, and relaxation for steel. The structural response of the bridge at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. As analyses result, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given with detail. It can be seen from the study that there are some differences between both analyses (with and without construction stages) and the results obtained from the construction stages are bigger. So, it is thought that construction stage analysis using time dependent material properties and geometric nonlinearity should be considered in order to obtain more realistic structural response of suspension bridges.
