Eocene magmatism related to postcollisional extension in the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkiye): 40Ar-39Ar geochronology, geochemistry, and whole-rock Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes

Aydinçakir, Emre; Yücel, Cem; Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Bilici, Ozgur; Yilmazer, Sinan; Ruffet, Gilles

The mineral chemistry, whole-rock geochemistry, 40 Ar / 39 Ar dating and Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopes of the Eocene Narman (Erzurum) Volcanic rocks in the southeast of the Eastern Pontides Orogenic Belt (EPOB, NE Turkiye) were investigated. The Narman Volcanites consist of basaltic dyke, basaltic lava, and basaltic volcanic breccia facies. Volcanites contain plagioclase (An34-80), 34-80 ), clinopyroxene (Wo38- 38- 47En41-50Fs5-18), En 41-50 Fs 5-18 ), and olivine (Fo 68-90 ) as phenocrystals with magnetite/titanomagnetite microphenocrysts. New 40 Ar- 39 Ar ages suggest that these volcanic rocks erupted between 44.5 +/- 0.1 and 43.4 +/- 0.1 Ma, within the Middle Eocene (Lutetian). Narman Volcanites have calcalkaline character, with medium-high K content. Volcanites are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE), while they are depleted in terms of high field strength elements (HFSE). Chondrite-normalized rare earth element distributions have concave shape with moderate enrichment (LaN/LuN= N /Lu N = 2.78-7.99), leading to consideration that the magmas forming the volcanics derived from similar sources. Isotopically, the rocks in the Narman Volcanites have low-medium initial 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values (0.70405-0.70485), initial 143 Nd/ 144 Nd values (0.512606-0.512848) and positive Nd i (+0.5 - +5.2). Depleted mantle Nd model ages were T DM1 = 0.29-0.62 Ga and T DM2 =0.43-0.83 Ga. (206Pb/204Pb)i, 206 Pb/ 204 Pb) i , (207Pb/204Pb)i, 207 Pb/ 204 Pb) i , and (208Pb/204Pb)i 208 Pb/ 204 Pb) i values vary in the ranges of 18.246-18.709, 15.578-15.616, and 38.225-38.791, respectively. The initial (176Hf/177Hf)i 176 Hf/ 177 Hf) i ratios for the volcanites are between 0.282770 and 0.283013, while the epsilon Hf values range from +7.6 to +9. All the evidence supports the conclusion that the parental magma for the rocks probably derived from an enriched lithospheric mantle, previously metasomatized by fluids derived from subducted slab during asthenospheric upwelling, due to fragmented asymmetric delamination in a postcollisional extensional tectonic environment.

Does structural change matter for sustainable development in newly industrialized countries? Fresh evidence from a new sustainability indicator

Artan, Seyfettin; Erdogan, Sinan; Recepoglu, Muersit; Çakir, Suemeyra cay; Hayaloglu, Pinar; Çakir, Mehmet Ali

The economic gap between developed and developing economies has been diminishing due to the recent rapid economic growth performance of developing economies. While achieving this swift growth level, developing economies have structurally transformed their economies. However, the impact of this structural change on environmental sustainability remains unclear. Therefore, this study focuses on the impacts of structural change, energy structure, and economic growth on the load capacity factor, a comprehensive sustainability indicator, in newly industrialized countries during 2000-2020. To this end, second-generation panel data techniques, which account for cross-sectional dependence and heterogeneity, are used to provide more robust and reliable estimates. The results show that economic growth, structural change, and fossil energy utilization decrease the load capacity factor while renewable energy utilization increases it. These findings underscore the need for energy efficiency and resource-conscious policies that align with environmental sustainability while promoting economic growth, highlighting their crucial role in the future of sustainable development.

Role of culture and religious beliefs on non-medical help-seeking behavior among patients with chronic mental illnesses (CMIs) in Türkiye

Ediz, Cicek; Uzun, Sevda; Mohammadnezhad, Masoud; Erdas, Mehmed B.

Background:Cultural beliefs significantly shape societal attitudes toward mental illness, and these social attitudes profoundly impact help-seeking behaviors. Therefore, it is important to focus on understanding and addressing these social behaviors.Aim:This study aimed to evaluate the effect of chronic mental illness interpretations based on culture and religious beliefs on non-medical help-seeking behaviors among patients in T & uuml;rkiye. Methods:The study was conducted from September to October 2023 using an inductive qualitative approach. In-depth face-to-face interviews were carried out with individuals diagnosed with chronic mental illness and their relatives, registered in a state-owned Community Mental Health Center (CMHC) in T & uuml;rkiye. Using purposive sampling, 13 individuals who met the criteria were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes. Results:Three main themes and eight sub-themes were identified, including the reasons for seeking non-medical help (psychological challenges, subjective norms, physical requirements), factors contributing to seeking non-medical help (predisposing factors, enabling factors, and myths), and reflections on the benefits of non-medical practices (perceived physical benefits, perceived psychological benefits). Conclusions:It was concluded that individuals with chronic mental illness and their relatives living in the Eastern Anatolia Region of T & uuml;rkiye engaged in non-medical help-seeking behaviors and mostly turned to traditional religious practices. Culture and religious beliefs emerged as primary factors leading patients to seek non-medical treatment approaches. Consequently, there is a perceived need to explore non-medical alternative methods across various mental health settings and with diverse samples in future research endeavors.

Improved estimation of population variance in stratified successive sampling using calibrated weights under non-response

Pandey, M. K.; Singh, G. N.; Zaman, Tolga; Al Mutairi, Aned; Mustafa, Manahil SidAhmed

This paper introduces a new method to estimate the population variance of a study variable in stratified successive sampling over two occasions, while accounting for random non -response. The method uses a logarithmic type estimator and leverages information from a highly positively correlated auxiliary variable. The paper also presents calibrated weights for the new estimator and examines its properties through numerical and simulation studies. The results indicate that the suggested estimator is more effective than the standard estimator for estimating the population variance.

LEARNING STYLES OF TALENTED PRE- SERVICE TEACHERS

    Türker, Ustun; Bostanci, Ozgur

The learning styles of students vary both among individuals and across different disciplines they choose to study. In higher education, academic discipline appears to be a key factor influencing students'distinctive learning styles. This study, which aims to determine the dominant learning styles and models of talented pre-service teachers, was designed with the survey model. The study group research consisted of 1019 volunteer pre-service teachers who continued their education in Physical Education and Sports, Music, and Arts & Craft Teaching departments. In the study, the VARK Learning Style Inventory was used as a data collection tool; students were asked to answer questions in a digital environment through Google Forms. According to the research results, kinesthetic style is the dominant learning preference for pre -service teachers in the visual arts and sports sciences, and both kinesthetic and aural styles are the dominant learning preferences for pre-service teachers in music education. Although talented pre-service teachers tend to learn predominantly kinesthetic and aural styles when evaluated, 61.2% of pre-service teachers prefer to learn with a Multiple Learning Model, which covers the entire instructional diversity, rather than sticking to just one learning style.

Wear Behavior of Dental Restorative Materials

Sen, Sadri; Zamanlou, Hamid; Karabudak, Filiz; Süküroglu, Ebru Emine

Gradual wear of opposing teeth is a normal phenomenon in human dentition. There is a need for quality dental restorative materials to repair or replace natural teeth to ensure a higher quality of life through dental health. One of the main physiological mechanism that exists in dental materials during normal muscle function is called abrasion. There are two types of that in teeth which are common; Two-body and three-body. If the teeth are contacted directly, it is referred to as two-body abrasion. However, when there is abrasive slurry-like food between the teeth, this abrasive is called to be three-body abrasive. Several types of materials are available in current dentistry for teeth restoration and replacement, and new materials are being promoted every year. Dental specialists need to understand the wear mechanisms of these new types of dental restorative materials, alone or in combination with either enamel or other dental restorative material. The present study evaluates the abrasive resistance of three restorative materials groups: direct composites, indirect composites, and ceramics. To define the resistance of the wear, the authors then perform a micro-wear test on chosen materials. The results show that the wear mechanism is abrasive due to its low hardness compared to zirconia ball. The wear path in the nanohybrid (Grandio (R), 87s% w/w (71s% volume) inorganic nanohybrid filler, BisGMA, UDMA, TEGDMA) sample was smooth and without particles. In this study wear FEM analysis calculated for all models and the answers compared with experimental data.

The Relationship between Urbanization, Energy Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emissions: Panel Ardl Analysis for Newly Industrialized Countries

    Akyol, Mehmet

An increase in the world population, technological advancement, and economic concerns bring along an increase in urbanization and energy consumption. Increasing urbanization speed and energy consumption cause environmental problems. The main hypothesis of this study is based on the idea that urbanization rate and energy consumption increase carbon dioxide emissions in developing countries. To test this hypethesis, the study ana-lyzed the relationship between urbanization, energy consump-tion, and carbon dioxide emission specific to newly industrialized countries. Panel ARDL method was utilized in this study that scrutinized the years between 1990 and 2018. According to the long-term results of the analysis, urbanization negatively affects carbon dioxide emission in the country group aforementioned; energy consumption and economic growth that is control vari-able have a positive effect on carbon-dioxide emission. Regarding short-term results, only the energy consumption positively af-fects carbon dioxide emission while other variables are statisti-cally insignificant. The results of the analysis reveal the necessity of policies towards smart city applications in reducing carbon dioxide emissions in newly industrialized countries. In addition, turning to renewable sources in energy consumption plays a key role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Foreign Aid, Institutions, and Economic Performance in Developing Countries

    Hayaloglu, Pinar

Although official development assistance presents a solution for developing countries to overcome the lack of capital, there is no consensus in the literature on the effectiveness of foreign aid. Moreover, opinions claiming that aid can only affect growth positively under certain conditions see institutional quality as an essential aspect that boosts the positive impact of aid. This study examines the relationships between foreign aid, institutional structure, and economic performance for 80 countries in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia. It is found that official development assistance and the quality of institutional structure in the sample countries affect economic growth positively. It also provides some suggestive evidence showing that foreign aid has a positive effect on the institutional structure.

Determining the most suitable sectors in terms of the digital supply chain by integrated fuzzy MCDM approach

    Gergin, Ramazan Eyuep

In this day and age, businesses come up against several challenges due to digital progresses in their supply chain. Digitalization has been expected to play an increasingly important role for both companies and the supply chains of the future. Concordantly, it is important to determine the suitability of the supply chains of the sectors for digitalization in order to cope with the difficulties that the enterprises will face in the future. The main objective of this study is to determine the suitability of the supply chains of the sectors in which medium-sized enterprises operate for digitalization. For this purpose, the criteria which affecting the constitution of the digital supply chain are determined with a comprehensive literature search. Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) is utilized to weighting of the relevant criteria. Sectors which medium-sized enterprises are constitute the alternatives of the study. After the weighting of the criteria, in terms of digital supply chain the suitability of the sectors was evaluated via Fuzzy TOPSIS (FTOPSIS) and Fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR). BORDA count technique is utilized to obtain the final decision by integrating the results from these two methods. According to the results of the study, the most important criterion in terms of Global Connectivity digital supply chain was determined as the Manufacturing sector according to FTOPSIS and the Health sector has been determined as the most suitable sector for digitalization according to FVIKOR. As to BORDA Count method, results show that the manufacturing sector is the most suitable sector for digitalization in the general ranking.

How Does Being Trusted Affect Sharing? Findings from the Ultimatum Game

    Çiçen, Yildirim Beyazit

According to economic models, individuals are rational, possess full knowledge, and strive to maximize their utility beyond their actual characteristics. Nevertheless, in the real world, people shape their behavior within a social structure and can display altruistic attitudes. This study investigates how trust facilitates sharing among individuals. To determine this, the Ultimatum Game was conducted with 412 participants. Three cases were determined, and the bidder was instructed to divide 10 thousand TL first in the typical game. Afterward, it was said that the other person was in need, and the bid was requested to be renewed. At the last stage, bids were received if there was any doubt about the needy. According to the typical game, people are more empathetic towards those in need and offer 6667 TL rather than 4264 TL. However, when a question of reliability is raised, 4658 TL is offered regardless of need. The findings show that the neoclassical economics concept of homo economicus, which seeks to maximize utility, is not valid in real life.

The Culture of Living on Screen and the Audience-Human as Screenshot

    Demir, Sertac Timur

This paper asserts the idea that everyday life is screened while screens are humanised. As a matter of fact, the screens, which once consisted of detached mechanisms limited to certain places and positioned in front of the audience, at this point, surround the spaces and people. Televisions, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, automobile screens, smart technologies, and flashing billboards are reshaping the connections of modern individuals with the space they live in, the time they feel, the relationships they develop, and their own beings. So much so that the screens that are connected to almost all devices and organize daily life entirely cease to be a platform for viewing images and turn into a kind of spectator's eye. In this regulation, the modern human performs many vital acts from working to having fun, from learning to experiencing, from adapting to resisting not through the screen as it once was, but now as the screen. This screen culture, which basically imitates and perhaps targets the eye, has become one of the norms of digital life. The theoretical framework of this research, which tries to see both the premises of the rapid transformation in question and to trace the ambiguous course, consists of the works of pioneering thinkers such as Gunther Anders, Jean Baudrillard and Byung-Chul Han. For this purpose, in this qualitative study, sociological film analysis is carried out through the episode of Fifteen Million Merits (2011) of the series Black Mirror, one of the Sci-Fi examples that have become very popular in recent years. This episode is notable in terms both of embodying and of nurturing discussions about the screen society.

Technological Convergence in Emerging Economies: An Investigation with Unit Root Tests

    Zuhal, Mustafa

Technological developments play an important role in economic growth and development and form the basis in the convergence of socioeconomic factors between developed and developing countries, especially income. At the same time, developing countries aim to catch up with the leading countries by improving their technological capabilities, and examining the technological convergence between countries, especially developing countries, is essential at this stage. This study aims to examine whether technological convergence occurs in 10 emerging economies. For this purpose, the study analyzes technological convergence over the variables of number of patents, labor productivity, and total factor productivity using Pesaran's (2007) cross-sectionally augmented Dickey-Fuller (CADF) and seemingly unrelated regression augmented Dickey-Fuller (SURADF) unit root tests. According to the results of the analysis, although there is convergence in some countries, it does not confirm in general technological convergence among the countries.
