- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ4Statistical correlation between b-value and fractal dimension regarding Turkish epicentre distribution
Öztürk, Serkan
This study was aimed at analysing the relationship between seismic b-value and fractal dimension Dc-value for Turkish epicentres. The earthquake catalogue consisting of 99,737 instrumentally-registered Turkish events was analysed for the period between 1970 and 2011; Turkey was divided into 55 tectonic zones for making a detailed comparison. The b-values were calculated by the maximum likelihood method and the Dc-values were obtained with 95% confidence limits by linear regression. The results showed that higher Dc-values were associated with lower b-values and this could have been an indication of relatively high stress intensity and stronger epicentre clustering in these regions. Orthogonal regression was used to estimate a suitable statistical correlation between two seismotectonic parameters; the Dc = 2.44 - 0.30*b relationship was obtained with a strong negative correlation (r = -0.82) between b-value and Dc-value for Turkish earthquake distribution. This seemed to agree with other regional results obtained for different parts of Turkey and the rest of the world.

Gurocak, Zulfu; Solanki, Pranshoo; Alemdag, Selcuk; Zaman, Musharraf M.
In this paper, a combined laboratory and modeling study was conducted to develop a database for predicting tensile strength of rocks. Six hundred eighty six rock samples from 24 different sites throughout eastern Turkey were collected and tested for the development of this database and evaluation of models. A total of 512 samples were used for developing the models and the remaining 174 samples were used as control dataset. The material parameters selected in the development of the models include tensile strength (σ t), point load index (Is (50)), Schmidt rebound number (N) and unit weight (γ). A total of four models, two regression models, namely, simple linear regression and multiple regression, and two feed forward-type artificial neural network (ANN) models, namely, radial basis function network (RBFN) and multi-layer perceptron network (MLPN) are developed. A commercial software, Statistica 8.0, is used to develop these models. The strengths and weaknesses of the developed models were assessed by comparing the predicted σ t values with the experimental values with respect to the R 2 values. Overall, the MLPN model was found to be the best model for the present development and evaluation datasets. As a result of these analyses, an equation was suggested based on ANN model to estimate the tensile strength of rocks.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ2One-dimensional thermal modeling of the eastern pontides orogenic belt (NE Turkey)
Maden, Nafiz
The eastern Pontides orogenic belt is one of the most complex geodynamic settings in the Alpine-Himalayan belt due to the lack of systematical geological and geophysical data. In this study, 1D crustal structure and P-wave velocity distribution obtained from gravity modeling and seismological data in the area has been used for the development of the thermal model of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt. The computed temperature-depth profiles suggest a temperature of 590 ± 60°C at a Moho depth of 35 km indicates the presence of a brittle-ductile transition zone. This temperature value might be related to water in the subducted crust of the Tethys oceanic lithosphere. The Curie temperature depth value of 29 km, which may correspond to the crustal magma chambers, is found 5-7 km below the Moho depth. Surface heat flow density values vary from 66.5 and 104.7 mW m -2. High mantle heat flow density value of 48 mW m -2 is obtained for the area should be related to melting of the lithospheric mantle caused by upwelling of asthenosphere.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2012Scopus SJRQ1Probabilistic sensitivity analysis of two suspension bridges in Istanbul, Turkey to near- and far-fault ground motion
Çavdar, Ö.
The aim of this paper is to compare the near-fault and far-fault ground motion effects on the probabilistic sensitivity dynamic responses of two suspension bridges in Istanbul. Two different types of suspension bridges are selected to investigate the near-fault (NF) and far-fault (FF) ground motion effects on the bridge sensitivity responses. NF and FF strong ground motion records, which have approximately identical peak ground accelerations, of the Kocaeli (1999) earthquake are selected for the analyses. Displacements and internal forces are determined using the probabilistic sensitivity method (PSM), which is one type of stochastic finite element method. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm are validated by comparison with results of the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method. The displacements and internal forces obtained from the analyses of suspension bridges subjected to each fault effect are compared with each other. It is clearly seen that there is more seismic demand on displacements and internal forces when suspension bridges are subjected to NF and FF ground motion.

A new, simple, and rapid cloud point extraction (CPE) procedure system, combined with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS), was developed for selective separation, preconcentration, and determination of trace amounts of total iron in some environmental samples. The complexing agent, N,N-(2,2 - (ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(2-chloroacetamide) (EDBOCA), is selective at pH 5.0 for only Fe(II) and Fe(III) ions in the presence of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), Mn(II), Co(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Ni(II), Zn(II), Al(III), Mo(VI), Pd(II), Pt(IV), Au(III), and V(V) ions. The procedure is based on the complexation of Fe(III) ions with EDBOCA reagent in the presence of Triton X-114 (TX-114) as a non-ionic surfactant. The optimum conditions for the CPE of Fe(III) ions were investigated with respect to several experimental parameters such as pH of the solution, TX-114 and EDBOCA concentrations, incubation time and temperature, and centrifugation rate and time. The detection limit for Fe(III) ions based on the 3 times the standard deviation of the blanks (N:10) was found to be 1.22 μg L ?1 , while the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 4.2%. Environment Canada TM-25.3 and CRM-SA-C Sandy Soil C, as certified reference materials, were used, and spike tests were applied to validate the method. The method was applied to some real environmental samples to evaluate their total iron levels.

Ustaalioglu, Basak Oven; Bilici, Ahmet; Kefeli, Umut; Şeker, Mesut; Oncel, Mustafa; Gezen, Cem; Gumus, Mahmut; Demirelli, Fuat
OBJECTIVES:: Multifocal/multicentric breast cancers have been comprehensively studied and their outcomes have been compared with unifocal tumors. We evaluated the impact of multifocality and multicentricity on the disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival of breast cancer patients and tried to analyze the correlation between multifocality/multicentricity (M/M) and other prognostic factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS:: Between 1994 and 2009, we analyzed retrospectively 697 breast cancer patients. Multicentric and multifocal breast cancer were defined as the presence of 2 or more invasive tumor foci within the different quadrants of the same breast or within a same quadrant of the breast, respectively. M/M and other prognostic factors were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS:: Multifocal/multicentric tumors were seen in 107 (15.4%) of the 697 breast cancer patients. pT and pN stage were related with the presence of multifocal/multicentric tumors. As tumor size increased and the number of axillary lymph nodes metastasis increased, the incidence of M/M increased significantly (P=0.003 vs. P=0.02, respectively). Overall, the median DFS time of patients with multifocal/multicentric tumors was significantly worse than that of the unifocal tumors (55 vs. 137 mo, P<0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that the presence of M/M was the most important prognostic factor for DFS (P=0.001, hazard ratio (HR): 0.33; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.18-0.58), as were pN stage and extracapsular extension of the tumor (P=0.01, HR: 1.74; 95% CI, 1.13-2.69) (P=0.03, HR: 1.9; 95% CI, 1.04-3.47, respectively). M/M were not also statistically significant prognostic factors in breast cancer for overall survival (P=0.06). CONCLUSIONS:: M/M imparts an unfavorable prognosis on the DFS of breast cancer patients in comparison to unifocal tumors and the presence of multifocal/multicentric tumors were associated with advanced pT and pN stages.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ1Soil geochemical prospection for gold deposit in the Arzular area (NE Turkey)
Yaylali-Abanuz, Gülten; Tüysüz, Necati; Akaryali, Enver
The Arzular gold mineralization is located at the southern part of the Black Sea Tectonic Unit in northern Turkey. This belt hosts several high-potential epithermal gold deposits and it is highly probable that there are a number of undiscovered occurrences in the region. The presence of intensely altered areas, suitable structural elements and acidic intrusions indicates that the region has an important potential for epithermal gold. Soil geochemistry surveys are widely used for the exploration of buried mineral deposits. In this work the applicability of soil geochemistry surveys for exploration of buried mineral deposits was tested using various statistical methods. In this respect, concentrations of 16 elements have been assayed in about 50 soil samples collected from the Arzular area. Soil samples were taken from the B horizon. The data revealed elevated concentrations for gold (0.20-259.2 μg/kg), silver (23-26,972 μg/kg), arsenic (1.7-301.8. mg/kg), copper (54.09-170.7. mg/kg), zinc (5.1-261.3. mg/kg) and lead (2.6-385.45. mg/kg). Gold is significantly correlated with elements such as Sb, Cd, Pb, Ag, As, Cu and Mo. Relatively high anomaly contrasts between Au, As, Ag and Sb and their coinciding anomalies along an E-W trending fault at the eastern part of the field might indicate that As, Ag and Sb could be used as a pathfinder element for exploration of gold deposits. Factor analysis was applied to elements in soil samples and then distribution diagrams were prepared using the factor scores obtained. In a distribution diagram for mineralization-associated factor score, two anomaly fields along the E-W trending fracture line and one anomaly field at the eastern part were distinguished. The largest anomaly in an ellipsoidal shape with long axis of 350. m was obtained from the southeast part of the area. Anomaly patterns show that factor scores might yield suitable and net results for the exploration. NE-SW trending fracture system is not related to mineralization and is younger than E-W trending fracture line. However, the E-W trending fault system controls the mineralization; therefore, the eastern extent of this fault zone needs to be investigated.

Baltaci, C.; Ilyasoǧlu, H.; Cavrar, S.
Aflatoxin levels in hazelnut samples obtained from exporter companies were monitored over a 3-year period. A total of 3188 samples of raw and processed hazelnuts were analysed using an HPLC method. The total aflatoxin content of the contaminated samples was in the range of 0.02-78.98 μg kg-1 for hazelnut kernels, 0.07-43.59 μg kg-1 for roasted hazelnut kernels, 0.02-39.17 μg kg-1 for roasted sliced hazelnut kernels, and 0.02-11.20 μg kg-1 for hazelnut purees, respectively, showing that the variations of aflatoxin contamination were very high. The results of aflatoxin analysis revealed that the aflatoxin contamination in the hazelnut samples was at a tolerable level. A total of 3147 samples were contaminated with aflatoxins, although below the legal limits. However, the aflatoxin contents of 41 samples exceeded the legal limits. Therefore, aflatoxin contents of hazelnuts should be monitored regularly to minimise the risk of aflatoxin hazard, and pre- and post-harvest strategies should be developed to prevent aflatoxin formation.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ3Petrography and geochemistry of Eocene sandstones from eastern Pontides (NE TURKEY): Implications for source area weathering, provenance and tectonic setting
Eker, Cigdem Saydam
Subaerial weathering level, source area and tectonic environments were interpreted by using petrographic and geochemical characteristics of Eocene age sandstones found in the eastern Pontides. The thickness of Eocene age clastic rocks in the eastern Pontides ranges from 195 to 400 m. Mineralogical components of sandstones were mainly quartz, feldspar, rock fragments, and opaque and accessory minerals. Depending on their matrix and mineralogical content, Eocene age sandstones are identified as arkosic arenite-lithic arenite and feldspathic wacke-lithic wacke. CIA (Chemical Index of Alteration) values observed in the Eocene age sandstones (43-55) suggest that the source terrain of the sandstones was not affected by intense chemical weathering. Low CIW/CIA (Chemical Index of Weathering/Chemical Index of Alteration) values of the sandstones studied here suggest only slightly decomposed material and having undergone little transport until final deposition. Zr/Hf, Th/Sc, La/Sc and CIA ratios are low and demonstrate a mafic source; on the other hand, high LREE/HREE ratios and a slightly negative Eu anomaly indicate a subordinate fclsic source. Modal mineralogical and SiO 2/Al 2O 3 and K 2O/Na 2O and Th, Zr, Co, Sc of Eocene age sandstone contents indicate that they are probably magmatic arc originated and deposited in the back arc basin.

Aksakal, V.; Bayram, B.; Yanar, M.; Akbulut, O.
Data on 368 birth records of Swedish Red and White cattle herd raised organically at Dogan Organic Dairy Cattle Farm for a period of 2006 and 2009 (4 years) were used to estimate the effects of different environmental factors on birth weight. Additionally, a comparison of four methods for variance component estimation to compute heritability of birth weight was performed using ML (Maximum likelihood), MINQUE (Minimum variance quadratic unbiased estimation), REML (Restricted maximum likelihood) and Henderson's Method III. Average abortion rate, stillbirth rate, twin and single birth rates of Swedish Red and White cattle were as 4.5%, 4.3%, 3.2% and 87.7% respectively. The least squares mean for birth weight was 37.4±0.70 kg. While effects of calving year (P<0.01), calving season (P<0.05) and sex of calve (P<0.01) were significant, and the effect of age of dam was not significant (P>0.05). Sire and error variance components and standard error of the heritability obtained by using ML method were lower than those obtained by the other three methods. Heritability estimates for birth weight obtained by ML, REML, MINQUE and Henderson Method III were 0.57±0.22, 0.62±0.24, 0.65±0.25 and 0.59±0.24, respectively. It is concluded that the ML procedure was superior for estimating variance components and heritability of birth weight of Swedish Red and White cattle and non-genetic factors influencing the birth weight should also be considered in selection and an adjustment for the significant environmental factors should be made.

Turkey has a rich potential of hydropower, wind and geothermal energy resources. The distribution of these renewable energy sources in operation are hydropower, wind and geothermal 14.802 MW 1002MW and 94 MW, respectively. Turkey possesses a huge hydroelectric resource which is one of the Turkey's major energy assets. Most of the important uses of water in power plants have been developed in the electricity generation. Turkey has a total gross hydropower potential of 433 TWh/yr, which is equal to 13.8% of the total hydropower potential of European. Technically useable and economic potential are 216 TWh/yr and 140 TWh/yr, respectively. The total share of all energy for electricity power generation in 2010 are coal, natural gas, fuel oil and renewable energy, 104,040 GWh, 125,549 GWh, 18,215 GWh, and 86,120 GWh respectively. Among the renewable energy resources in Turkey, biomass and solar energy are also important because their share in total energy consumptions have increased. On the other hand, Turkey has not utilized nuclear energy yet. The current government plans to have a nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1800MW at the Black Sea Port of Sinop. The main purpose of the energy policies is to answer the energy needs of increasing population and growing economy at minimum costs while making energy supply planning. Turkey's specific national energy strategy document and energy policy objectives are outlined in the institutional strategic plans. These strategic plans are energy supply security, regional and global influence in the area of energy and environment protection. Uysal, Ibrahim; Ersoy, E. Yalcin; Karsli, Orhan; Dilek, Yildirim; Sadiklar, M. Burhan; Ottley, Chris J.; Tiepolo, Massimo; Meisel, Thomas
We present new, whole-rock major and trace element chemistry, including rare earth elements (REE), platinum-group elements (PGE), and Re-Os isotope data from the upper mantle peridotites of a Cretaceous Neo-Tethyan ophiolite in the Mugla area in SW Turkey. We also report extensive mineral chemistry data for these peridotites in order to better constrain their petrogenesis and tectonic environment of formation. The Mugla peridotites consist mainly of cpx-harzburgite, depleted harzburgite, and dunite. Cpx-harzburgites are characterized by their higher average CaO (2.27 wt.%), Al2O3 (2.07 wt.%), REE (53 ppb), and Os-187/Os-188((i)) ratios varying between 0.12497 and 0.12858. They contain Al-rich pyroxene with lower Cr content of coexisting spinel (Cr# = 13-22). In contrast, the depleted harzburgites and dunites are characterized by their lower average CaO (0.58 wt.%), Al2O3 (0.42 wt.%), and REE (1.24 ppb) values. Their clinopyroxenes are Al-poor and coexist with high-Cr spinel (Cr# = 33-83). The Os-187/Os-188((i)) ratios are in the range of 0.12078-0.12588 and are more unradiogenic compared to those of the cpx-harzburgites. Mineral chemistry and whole rock trace and PGE data indicate that formation of the Mugla peridotites cannot be explained by a single stage melting event; at least two-stages of melting and refertilization processes are needed to explain their geochemical characteristics. Trace element compositions of the cpx-harzburgites can be modeled by up to similar to 10-16% closed-system dynamic melting of a primitive mantle source, whereas those of the depleted harzburgites and dunites can be reproduced by similar to 10-16% open-system melting of an already depleted (similar to 16%) mantle. These models indicate that the cpx-harzburgites are the products of first-stage melting and low-degrees of melt-rock interaction that occurred in a mid-ocean ridge (MOR) environment. However, the depleted harzburgites and dunites are the product of second-stage melting and related refertilization which took place in a supra subduction zone (SSZ) environment. The Re-Os isotope systematics of the Mugla peridotites gives model age clusters of similar to 250 Ma, similar to 400 Ma and similar to 750 Ma that may record major tectonic events associated with the geodynamic evolution of the Neo-Tethyan. Rheic, and Proto-Tethyan oceans, respectively. Furthermore, >1000 Ma model ages can be interpreted as a result of an ancient melting event before the Proto-Tethys evolution. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Kesmen, Z.; Yetiman, A. E.; Gulluce, A.; Kacmaz, N.; Sagdic, O.; Cetin, B.; Adiguzel, A.; Sahin, F.; Yetim, H.
In this study, the culture-dependent and culture-independent molecular methods were used for the identification of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in sucuk a Turkish fermented dry sausage. On the one hand, the PCR-DGGE method targetting the V1 and V3 regions of 16S DNA was applied to DNA that was directly extracted from sucuk samples. On the other hand, rep-PCR fingerprinting was performed for the primary differentiation and grouping of the isolates, and the results were confirmed by sequencing of the 165 rDNA and 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region. As a result of the PCR-DGGE analysis of all the samples, total 8 different lactic acid bacteria were identified, and Lactobacillus sakei, Lactobacillus curvatus and Weissella viridescens were the dominant microbiota among these bacteria. The culture-dependent approach indicated that the majority of the strains belonged to the Lactobacillus genera including Lb. sakei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lb. curvatus, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus farciminis and Lactobacillus alimentarius. However, Leuconostoc and Weisella were also detected as minor genera. Again, Lactococcus piscium, Weissella halotolerans, Staphylococcus succinus and the comigrated Staphylococcus piscifermentans/Staphylococcus condimenti/Staphylococcus camosus group were detected only with the culture-independent method while Lb. plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Leuconostoc citreum were identified only by using the culture-dependent method. In the results, it was concluded that the combination of culture-dependent and culture-independent methods was necessary for reliable and detailed investigation of LAB communities in fermented food products. The ability of activated carbon which was produced by chemical activation using zinc chloride from tea industry wastes (TIWAC) to adsorb phenol molecules from aqueous solution was tested by equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic parameters. Phenol adsorption on TIWAC took place with a high yield at pH values in the range 4 to 8. The optimum contact period was observed as 4.0 h and from the adsorption graphs plotted as a function of time; it was established that phenol adsorption on TIWAC conformed more to a pseudosecond-order kinetic model. Additionally, it was determined that the adsorption rate is controlled by intraparticle diffusion as well as film diffusion. It was established that phenol adsorption on TIWAC can be better defined by the Langmuir adsorption model and its adsorption capacity was 142.9 mg.g(-1) from the linear Langmuir equation. Temperature had an adverse effect on adsorption yield, and hence, the adsorption process was exothermic in our case. Moreover, increasing electrolyte concentration in the medium has a positive effect on adsorption yield. From the data obtained, it was concluded that the removal of phenol from aqueous solution by TIWAC produced from tea industry wastes with a very low cost took place with an extremely high performance.
