Effect of Digital Health Literacy and E-health Literacy on Quality of Life: A systematical Review

    Köse, Asli

Employing the systematic review methodology, this study aims to address how digital health literacy and e-health literacy influence people's quality of life. This systematic review includes studies that examined the effect of e-health literacy and digital health literacy on quality of life. The results of 12 research papers meeting the standards established within the parameters of this study were divided into two groups: ehealth literacy and digital health literacy. The effect of e-health literacy on quality of life was assessed in five of the thirteen studies, whereas that of digital health literacy on quality of life was assessed in eight of them. The study sample consisted of people with cancer, people with long-term conditions like asthma, people who were following their postoperative treatment regimens, people affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the elderly, women, children, and students. Only one study reported that e-health literacy had a negative influence on quality of life, whereas 11 studies emphasized that digital health and e-health literacy had a positive influence. Policies are required to facilitate the use and access to digital health technology by various societal groups, including patients, the elderly, women with unequal social status, children, and learners.

Determinants of sleep quality and fatigue in patients undergoing hemodialysis

Kazak Salti, Aysun; Topali, Hasret; Türkmen, Osman Oğulcan

Aim: This research aimed to evaluate sleep quality and fatigue among individuals undergoing hemodialysis and to explore the determinants affecting these variables. Methods: This observational investigation was carried out among 78 who were regularly receiving hemodialysis therapy. The research was carried out between May and October 2025 in three different public hospitals among individuals undergoing hemodialysis treatment. Data were gathered using the Patient Information Form (PIF), the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: The mean score of the hemodialysis patients on the FSS is 4.97 ± 1.11, and the mean PSQI value is 7.76 ± 3.64. A moderately positive and statistically noteworthy relation was observed between the PSQI and FSS scores. Additionally, a low negative meaningful correlation was seen between ferritin levels and the FSS scores, as well as between calcium levels and the PSQI scores. The use of medications related to chronic disease and the PSQI scores were identified as significant predictors of the FSS scores. Conclusion: Fatigue and sleep quality in individuals receiving hemodialysis treatment are related to each other, as well as to biochemical balance and treatment adherence.

The effect of non-pharmacologic treatments in individuals with problematic pornography use: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Yıldız Karaahmet, Aysu; Bilgiç, Fatma Şule; Karakaş, Sevda

This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the effects of non-pharmacological treatments on problematic pornography use (PPU), pornography use frequency, sexual dysfunction, psychological symptoms, and quality of life in individuals with PPU. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science between June and July 2024. MeSH-based keywords were used to identify relevant Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) published in the last ten years. Five RCTs with a total of 826 participants were included. Non-pharmacological interventions significantly reduced PPU (SMD: −1.16; 95% CI: −2.10 to −0.22; p = 0.02) and pornography use frequency (SMD: −0.74; 95% CI: −1.43 to −0.05; p = 0.04) compared to control groups. No statistically significant effects were found for sexual dysfunction (SMD: −0.47; p = 0.05) or psychological symptoms (SMD: −0.42; p = 0.06), though moderate effects were observed. Risk of bias was high or unclear in terms of participant and outcome blinding. Non-pharmacological interventions appear effective in reducing PPU and use frequency. Although effects on sexual function and psychological symptoms were not significant, the findings suggest potential improvements in overall quality of life.

Aydın, Esra; Özcan, Handan; Karakaş, Sevda; Uzun, Sevda

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of psychosocial interventions on sexual function, quality of life, and stress levels in women with gynecologic cancer. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and the YÖK Thesis Center were searched between June and July 2024 without year restriction. Randomized controlled and quasi-experimental studies evaluating psychosocial interventions were included. Data were synthesized using meta-analysis and narrative synthesis. Outcomes were synthesized separately for sexual function, quality of life, and stress. Results: Seven studies were included in the analysis. Psychosocial interventions significantly improved sexual function (SMD: 0.868; 95% CI: 0.021 to 1.715; Z = 2.008; p = 0.045; I2 = 89.97%) and quality of life (SMD: 0.709; 95% CI: 0.060 to 1.358; Z = 2.142; p = 0.032; I2 = 88.61%) in women with gynecologic cancer. However, psychosocial interventions did not demonstrate a significant effect on stress levels (SMD: − 1.126; 95% CI: − 2.649 to 0.397; Z = − 1.449; p = 0.147; I2 = 95.65%). Conclusion: This systematic review and meta-analysis indicates that psychosocial interventions are associated with improvements in sexual function and quality of life among women with gynecologic cancer, whereas no statistically significant reduction in stress was observed. Although substantial between-study heterogeneity was present, the overall evidence supports the integration of psychosocial approaches into supportive oncology nursing care.

Akay, Gamze; Koç, Elif Simay; Oğuzhan, Hatice

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between post-traumatic stress, quality of life, and loneliness levels in adolescents following the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş. The research, designed as descriptive and correlational, was conducted with 701 children aged 13–18 who experienced the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş. Data were collected through a Demographic Information Form, the Child Post-Traumatic Stress Reaction Index, the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale-Short Form. Ethical principles were adhered to throughout the study. Female adolescents were found to have higher levels of post-traumatic stress (t = 3.508, p < 0.001) and lower quality of life (t = 4.223, p < 0.001). The adolescents exhibited severe levels of post-traumatic stress (55.25 ± 13.80). It was determined that the mother’s education level (F = 4.423, p = 0.002), the father’s occupation (F = 2.859, p = 0.036), and perceived income level (F = 5.912, p = 0.003) significantly influenced adolescents’ loneliness levels. The father’s occupation (F = 3.403, p = 0.017) was found to have a significant effect on post-traumatic stress levels, and perceived income level (F = 4.753, p = 0.009) had a significant effect on quality of life. A moderate negative correlation was found between post-traumatic stress levels and quality of life (r = −0.474, p < 0.001), and a weak positive correlation was observed between post-traumatic stress and loneliness levels (r = 0.215, p < 0.001). A weak negative correlation was also found between quality of life and loneliness levels (r = −0.284, p < 0.001). A moderate negative correlation was found between adolescents’ post-traumatic stress levels and quality of life, while a weak positive correlation was observed between post-traumatic stress levels and loneliness. It is recommended to provide psychological support and guidance services aimed at reducing post-traumatic stress and loneliness levels in adolescents.

Nurse-Led Mobile App Effect on Quality of Life in Breast Cancer Patients After Surgery: Nonrandomized Controlled Prospective Cohort Study (Step 3)

    Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla

Background: – Following surgery, women with breast cancer (BC) frequently experience emotional and physiological negative consequences. Objective: – To evaluate the effect of a nurse-led mobile app (NL-Mapp) intervention on quality of life (QoL) in patients after surgery for BC. Methods: – This single-center, 12-month, nonrandomized controlled trial, with 2 parallel groups, represents the final stage of 3-step research. In this study, women were assigned to either the intervention (n = 45) or control (n = 45) group. The intervention group participated in the NL-Mapp, whereas participants in the control group received standard care. The main outcomes were measured using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy—Breast at 3 time points (baseline and 1 and 12 months after the intervention). Clinical Trial number: NCT06505538 Results: – The intervention participants reported significant improvement in physical well-being, emotional well-being, and the BC-specific subscale compared with the control group at the 1-month postsurgery mark. Equally noteworthy, at the 1-year follow-up, consistent improvements were observed across all QoL subscale scores for the intervention group, except for the BC-specific subscale for additional concerns. Conclusion: – Our study revealed a notable enhancement in the QoL among postoperative women with BC who utilized the NL-Mapp. This program emerges as an effective intervention for providing short-term and longer-term supportive care to women affected by BC, leading to tangible improvements in their QoL. Implication for Nursing: – The study’s findings offer valuable evidence supporting the integration of mobile health services into clinical and transitional nursing care.

Yoga-based breathing exercises performed in a salt-cave environment versus a standard clinical setting in smokers: a randomized controlled trial salt-cave breathing exercises in smokers

Bağci, Uğur; Alpteki̇n, Hasan Kerem; Hatik, Sefa Haktan; Aydin, Emine Büşra

Backgorund: To investigate the effect of a speleotherapy environment on spirometric parameters in smokers and to compare the outcomes with those of the same yoga-based breathing exercise program performed in a standard clinical setting. Methods: This randomized controlled clinical trial included 60 adult smokers aged 18–65 years who were allocated to a speleotherapy group (n = 30) or a control group (n = 30). Both groups received the same physiotherapist-supervised yoga-based breathing exercise program for 6 weeks, twice weekly, in 50-minute sessions; the only difference was the intervention setting. Forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, peak expiratory flow, and forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity were assessed at baseline, week 3, and week 6. Physical activity, functional exercise capacity, and quality of life were also evaluated. Data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models with group, time, and group × time interaction as fixed effects and participant as a random effect. Results: Both groups showed improvements over time in spirometric and secondary outcomes. In the linear mixed-effects model analysis, the primary spirometric outcome, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, showed a significant group × time interaction in favor of the speleotherapy group. Significant group × time effects were also observed for 6-minute walk distance and selected quality-of-life domains, whereas broader spirometric superiority across forced vital capacity, peak expiratory flow, and forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity was limited. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the treatment environment may influence selected respiratory and functional outcomes in smokers. Yoga-based breathing exercises were associated with improvements in spirometric outcomes in both settings. The additional effect of the salt-cave environment on respiratory outcomes was limited, with a significant between-group difference observed only for forced expiratory volume in 1 s. The salt-cave setting may also be associated with greater improvements in functional capacity and selected quality-of-life outcomes, but broader pulmonary benefits or an independent speleotherapy effect cannot be concluded from the present findings. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT07737587. Retrospectively registered on 30 July 2026.

Investigation of parents with high-risk infant on participation in care, depression, quality of life, and anxiety according to the infant's severity of neurologic impact

    Sen, Muserref Ebru; Yakut, Hatice

Aim: The study aims to examine the psychological consequences such as anxiety levels, quality of life, depression, and participation in the care of parents with high-risk infants who have varying levels of neurological impact severity. Material and Methods: Forty high-risk infants and their mothers were included in the study. The infants were divided into three groups according to the Dubowitz Neurologic Assessment Scale. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), Quality of Life Short Form 36 (SF-36), and the NICU Care Participation Scale were administered. Results: There were significant differences in the mothers' anxiety and depression levels (p < 0.001) and many parameters of quality of life according to the severity of neurological impact. However, it was determined that the severity of the neurological impact did not affect the mothers' participation in care (p > 0.01). Discussion: Although our study revealed that parents' depression, anxiety, and quality of life levels changed according to the severity of neurological impairment in high-risk infants, care participation was not affected. The limited sample size and the inability to generalize the results to different cultural and socioeconomic groups are important limitations. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the medical condition of the newborn seriously affects the mental health of the parents.

Relationship between Quality of Life and Suicide Risk in Iranian Cancer Patients: The Mediating Role of Religious Coping

Karimi, Amirreza; Mazhari, Seyed Amirhossein; Mohammadi, Elnaz Malek; Güngör, Sunay; Kalantari, Soheyla; Taebi, Mozhgan; Hamidi, Fatemeh; Farhadi, Bahar

Objective: Cancer patients often experience significant declines in quality of life (QoL), which can elevate suicide risk. In culturally religious societies like Iran, religious coping may serve as a critical buffer against such adverse outcomes. This study examined the relationship between QoL and suicide risk among Iranian cancer patients, with a focus on the mediating role of religious coping. Method: A purposive sample of 350 cancer patients from Tehran was analyzed using validated measures of QoL (EORTC QLQ-C30), suicide risk (Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation), and religious coping (Brief RCOPE-14). Data were analyzed using SPSS v26 and the PROCESS macro v4.0. Results: Bivariate correlations revealed that lower QoL was strongly associated with higher suicide risk (r = -0.62, p < 0.001), while positive religious coping correlated with better QoL (r = 0.48, p < 0.001) and reduced suicide risk (r = -0.41, p < 0.001). Mediation analyses demonstrated that positive religious coping significantly attenuated the QoL-suicide risk relationship (indirect β = -0.09, 95% CI [-0.15, -0.04]), accounting for 17% of the total effect. Negative religious coping, though less prevalent, also mediated this relationship but to a lesser extent (indirect β = -0.03, 95% CI [-0.05, -0.01]). Subgroup analyses indicated that the protective effect of positive religious coping was stronger in advancedstage patients. Conclusion: These findings underscore the importance of integrating spiritual care into oncology settings in Iran, leveraging faith-based resources to enhance resilience and reduce suicide risk. Future research should explore longitudinal and culturally tailored interventions to further elucidate the role of religious coping in cancer survivorship.

The effect of motivational interviewing on quality of life and self-efficacy behaviors of individuals with chronic illness: A meta-analysis study

    Uzun, Sevda; Guerhan, Nermin

ObjectiveThis study aims to reveal the effect of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life and self-efficacy behaviors of individuals with chronic diseases.Material-methodFor this meta-analysis study, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and Y & Ouml;K Theses databases were searched in January-May 2021 without year limitation. As a result, 38 studies were included in the study: 23 for the quality of life variable, and 21 for the self-efficacy behaviors variable (in 6 studies, both variables were examined together). The data were synthesized with meta-analysis and narrative methods. The total sample size of the studies is 25,425.ResultsThis meta-analysis study showed that the motivational interviewing applied to individuals with chronic diseases changed their quality of life (SMD: 0.296, %95 CI: 0.054-0.537, Z = 2.402, p = .016, I2 = %95). The type of chronic disease, measurement tool, sample group, disease group, age range, and whether the motivational interviewer was a nurse or not changed the effect size of the motivational interviewing on the quality of life. The self-efficacy score average of the experimental group to which motivational interviewing was applied was statistically similar to that of the control group (SMD: 0.141, %95 CI: -0.065, 0.347; Z = 1.346, p = .178, I2 = %87).ConclusionsAs a result of the meta-analysis, it was determined that the use of motivational interviewing increased the quality of life level of individuals with chronic diseases. However, it is thought that more research is needed because some studies were conducted with small sample size and prepost test design. The results of the study may provide guidance on the interventions to be used in improving the quality of life of individuals with chronic diseases.

Practices of Patient Relatives Aimed at Preventing Pressure Injuries and Their Experiences of Coping with the Burden of Care: A Qualitative Study

Ulutaşdemir, Nilgün; Ay, Halil; Göçmen, Adalet; Uzun, Sevda; Kulakaç, Nurşen

OBJECTIVE: To determine the practices and coping experiences of the relatives of patients with pressure injuries (PIs). METHODS: The authors used a qualitative, phenomenologic research design. They interviewed 20 relatives of patients with PIs face-to-face using an in-depth semistructured interview form. The data were analyzed using the Colaizzi phenomenologic method. RESULTS: Three categories, 8 main themes, and 22 subthemes emerged from the interviews. The category of “the impact of the need for care on the lives of the patient’s relatives” was analyzed according to psychological, social, and physical effects. In the category of “practices to prevent pressure injuries,” two themes emerged: practices toward the patient and the environment. Relatives of individuals with PIs have psychological, physical, and social needs. CONCLUSIONS: Providing care to a patient with PIs has psychological, social, and physical effects on the patient’s relatives. The care burden mostly affects these caregivers negatively, and they mainly need time for themselves and moral and companion support.

The effect of transurethral resection of the prostate on sexual life quality in patient spouses

    Aydin Sayilan, Aylin; Kulakac, Nursen

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) surgery on quality of sexual life in patients' spouses. A pre/post-operative test, quasi-experimental design with no control group was employed. The research was conducted in the urology clinics of two hospitals in the west of Turkey between 30 June and 30 September 2022. It was completed with 172 patient spouses recruited using non-probability sampling. The study data were collected using an individual information form and the Sexual Quality of Life-Female questionnaire. The preoperative test applied prior to surgery was administered by the face-to-face interview method, while the postoperative test was completed by telephone interviews 8 weeks after the initial data collection. The mean age of the individuals undergoing TURP surgery in this study was 62.69 ± 7.98 years (min 40, max 77), and the mean age of the spouses was 57.91 ± 7.46 (min 39, max 73). Sexual Quality of Life-Female scores after surgery were significantly higher than the pre-surgical values (p < 0.001). A significant difference in sex life quality was determined in terms of age, education, employment status, presence of chronic disease, number of children, and ‘love marriages’ (p < 0.05). The sexual life quality of the spouses of patients exposed to TURP surgery increased significantly 8 weeks after the procedure. The quality of sex life was higher among individuals with higher education levels, working individuals, and those who ‘married for love’, but decreased in line with age and number of children.

The Relationship between the Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Cardiovascular Diseases with Self- Care Ability and Life Quality

Kulakaç, Nursen; Uzun, Sevda; Sayilan, Aylin Aydin

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading global causes of morbidity and mortality. Lifestyle changes are critical for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and improving self-care levels during treatment. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and the quality of life and self-care ability in individuals with cardiovascular disease.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population in this cross-sectional and correlational research consisted of cardiovascular patients hospitalized in a public hospital between 1st April and 30th June 2018. One hundred and six patients agreeing to participate in this study were selected for sampling. A Patient Information Form, the Exercise of Self-Care Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Short Form were employed as the data collection tools.RESULTS: The mean age of the patients in this study was 62.83 +/- 1.40 years, 59.4% were women, and 34.0% had coronary heart disease. The patients' mean self-care score was 101.18 +/- 22.31, and their mean quality of life score was 28.61 +/- 9.50. Age, education, diagnosis and duration of disease, constipation, and CAM use were found to affect their quality of life (p<0.005). A positive correlation was determined between CAM use and self-care ability.CONCLUSION: The use of CAM in individuals with cardiovascular disease has a positive effect on self-care ability and enhances their quality of life.

    Uzun, Sevda; Özmaya, Esma

Purpose: The aim of the study is to examine the effect of the motivational interviewing method conducted by nurses on the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases. Design and Methods: The studies examined in this meta-analysis study were obtained by scanning the PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and YÖK thesis databases between January and May 2021 without any year limitation. After the elimination, 16 studies were included in the study. The data were synthesized with meta-analysis and narrative methods. The total sample size of the studies was 14,425. Findings: This meta-analysis demonstrated that the motivational interviewing method applied by nurses in individuals with chronic diseases changed their quality of life (SMD: 0.258, 95% confidence interval: 0.076–0.441; Z = 2.775, p = 0.006, I2 = 89.97%). The variance between studies was statistically significant (p < 0.05) for the moderator of the measurement tools, the duration of the motivational interviews, and the country/continent of the studies were conducted (p < 0.05), suggesting that the measurement tools, the duration of the motivational interview, and the country/continent of the studies changed the effect size of the motivational interview method on the quality of life. Practice Implications: It has been concluded that the motivational interview method applied by nurses who are in a critical position in the protection and development of health improves the quality of life of individuals with chronic diseases.

Symptom and Life Quality Management in Oncology Patients

    Demir Doğan, Melike

Quality of life is a multidimensional concept. Therefore, its assessment includes many parameters ranging from happiness and well-being of individuals to environmental quality and ecological structures. A good symptom management is associated with less symptom formation and thus with a better quality of life. Non-pharmacological interventions typically include various psychosocial, behavioral and environmental strategies that can complete traditional treatment to increase the quality of life for cancer patients.
