The effect of non-pharmacologic treatments in individuals with problematic pornography use: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Yıldız Karaahmet, Aysu; Bilgiç, Fatma Şule; Karakaş, Sevda

This study aimed to systematically review and meta-analyze the effects of non-pharmacological treatments on problematic pornography use (PPU), pornography use frequency, sexual dysfunction, psychological symptoms, and quality of life in individuals with PPU. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and Web of Science between June and July 2024. MeSH-based keywords were used to identify relevant Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) published in the last ten years. Five RCTs with a total of 826 participants were included. Non-pharmacological interventions significantly reduced PPU (SMD: −1.16; 95% CI: −2.10 to −0.22; p = 0.02) and pornography use frequency (SMD: −0.74; 95% CI: −1.43 to −0.05; p = 0.04) compared to control groups. No statistically significant effects were found for sexual dysfunction (SMD: −0.47; p = 0.05) or psychological symptoms (SMD: −0.42; p = 0.06), though moderate effects were observed. Risk of bias was high or unclear in terms of participant and outcome blinding. Non-pharmacological interventions appear effective in reducing PPU and use frequency. Although effects on sexual function and psychological symptoms were not significant, the findings suggest potential improvements in overall quality of life.

Effect of Homeopathy Intervention on Depression in Women: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Karakas, Sevda; Karaahmet, Aysu Yıldız; Bilgiç, Fatma Şule

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to systematically review randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of homeopathy intervention given to women on depression and to conduct a meta-analysis of the available evidence. Materials and Methods: Systematic searches of Cochrane, PubMed, SCOPUS, WOS, EMBASE in five databases were conducted between February- March 2025. The risk of bias and the certainty of the evidence were assessed with the Cochrane bias risk tool ROB-2. Summary effect size measurements were calculated using random effects model estimation and reported as standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals. Reporting followed PRISMA guidelines. Results: A systematic literature review was conducted with 10 studies included in the analysis. A total of 636 people took part in the studies. Homeopathy intervention had a significant effect on depression (SMD:-0.44, 95% CI:-0.71 to -0.18, Z=3.26, p=0.001), and in the subgroup analysis, it was found to be more effective in women aged 40 years and older than in women aged 40 years (SMD:-0.47, 95% CI: -0.91 to -0.03, Z=2.08, p=0.004). In addition, it was found to have a significant effect on anxiety (SMD:-0.43, 95% CI:-0.69 to -0.17, Z=3.27, p=0.001) and fatigue (MD:-1.58, 95% CI: -2.78 to -0.39, Z=2.59, p=0.009). Conclusions: The study determined that homeopathic intervention in women was effective for depression; It was found that it provided a decrease in anxiety and depression levels. It is important to disseminate homeopathy treatment and ensure accessibility in solving psychological problems such as depression and anxiety that adversely affect women's health.

Association Between Cyber Pornography Use and Sexual Health Literacy and Sexual Function in Women of Reproductive Age: A Cross-Sectional Study

Bilgiç, Fatma Şule; Yıldız Karaahmet, Aysu; Karakaş, Sevda

This study aimed to examine the association between cyber pornography use, sexual health literacy, and sexual function in women of reproductive age. This cross-sectional study was conducted via an online platform using Google Forms between January 25 and February 23, 2025, with 1,202 female participants aged 18–35. Data were collected using a Data Collection Form, the Cyber Pornography Use Scale-9 (CPUS-9), the Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX), and the Sexual Health Literacy Scale (SHLS). The average age of the participants was 23.19 ± 3.34 years. The mean total score for CPUS-9 was 2.26 ± 1.34, for ASEX was 14.98 ± 6.80, and for SHLS was 57.65 ± 13.18. A weak positive correlation was found between CPUS-9 and SHLS, while a weak negative correlation was observed between ASEX and SHLS. According to regression analysis, as sexual dysfunction increased in women, cyber pornography use also increased (β = 0.550), resulting in a 0.57-unit increase. Furthermore, as sexual health literacy increased, cyber pornography use also increased (β = 0.190), leading to a 0.19-unit increase. The findings suggest that cyber pornography use in women is associated with sexual function and sexual health, and these associations may relate to individuals’ levels of sexual health literacy.

Sexual health literacy as a predictor of reproductive health and family planning attitudes among university students: a cross-sectional study

Karaahmet, Aysu Yıldız; Bilgiç, Fatma Şule; Karakaş, Sevda

Introduction: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between sexual health literacy (SHL) and reproductive health and family planning (RHFP) attitudes among university students and to identify the sociodemographic and informational predictors influencing these variables. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed with a sample of 867 university students aged 18-35 in Türkiye between May and September 2024. Data were collected using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Sexual Health Literacy Scale (SHLS), and the Reproductive Health and Family Planning Attitude Scale (RHFPAS). Data analysis included Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression models to determine predictors and relationships. Results: The findings revealed a strong positive correlation between SHL and RHFP attitudes (r = 0.880, P < .05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that total SHLS scores and students’ conceptual definitions of sexual health were significant predictors of RHFP attitudes. In particular, the knowledge and attitude subscales of the SHLS were identified as key determinants. Furthermore, residence type, sexual activity status, and information sources were found to significantly influence both SHL levels and RHFP attitudes. Discussion: SHL is a critical determinant in shaping the RHFP attitudes of young adults. Higher literacy levels directly correlate with more positive attitudes toward reproductive health services, suggesting that targeted educational interventions are necessary to improve health outcomes in this population.
