Cosar, Dilan Aktepe; Demirag, Hatice; Cin, Aynur

Background: Chronic illnesses are long-term, noncommunicable diseases that significantly affect daily life. In addition to physical symptoms, they can reduce quality of life by causing psychological effects such as anxiety and depression. Patients often seek health information to better manage their condition. Methods: This study aimed to examine the level of health information-seeking behavior among individuals with chronic diseases and the factors influencing this behavior. The sample group for this descriptive study consisted of 306 individuals with chronic illnesses who visited X Hospital in northeastern T & uuml;rkiye between April 1, 2024, and February 1, 2025. All individuals completed a questionnaire consisting of the Patient Information Form and the Health Seeking Behavior Scale. Results: The sociodemographic characteristics of patients with chronic diseases, such as education level, marital status, and chronic disease duration, significantly affected the health-seeking behavior scores. According to the research findings, the highest mean score was determined as 12.30 +/- 2.62 in the occupational health-seeking subdimension, whereas the lowest mean score was determined as 8.78 +/- 3.83 (min-max: 3-15) in the traditional health-seeking subdimension. The total mean score of the Health Seeking Behavior Scale was 32.2 7 +/- 7.73. Conclusions: Individuals with chronic illnesses tend to prefer professional health care services when seeking health-related behaviors. Health-seeking behaviors were higher among high school graduates, single individuals, and those without chronic illnesses.

    Urinary system assessment

    Demirag, Hatice; Hintistan, Sevilay

The urinary system plays an important role in establishing and maintaining homeostasis of the body and has functions such as excretion of metabolic wastes and maintenance of fluidelectrolyte balance. Poor functioning of this system also affects other systems of the body. In diseases affecting the urinary system, the patient may encounter many problems. It is important and necessary that nurses who are in direct and constant contact with patients have sufficient knowledge of history taking, methods of physical examination and diagnostic tests.

Diabetes Risk Assessment with Blood Parameters of The First Degree Relatives of Patients with Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus

    Demirag, Hatice; Boyraz, Sakine

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the diabetes risk in first degree relatives of Type-2 diabetic patients who were not diagnosed with diabetes and test the validity of the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISK) in determining the risk of type-2 diabetes. Methods: First degree relatives of patients who were hospitalized in Izmir Katip Celebi University Ataturk Training and Research Hospital, who were not diagnosed with diabetes before, were included in this cross-sectional study. The sample of the research consisted of 200 people determined by power analysis. Data were collected by a structured question form and the FINRISK scale. Participants' height, weight, waist circumference were measured by the researcher, and venous fasting blood glucose (FBG) with Glycosylated Hemoglobin (HbA1c) were taken by the researcher. Results: The average age of the participants was 46.93 +/- 14.83 (18-86). It was determined that the vast majority of the individuals participating in the study were female (65%), 63% were married, 50.5% received high school or higher education, and 59% worked in an income-generating job. The findings was indicated that 41.5% of the participants were in the 'high-risk group' for type-2 diabetes according to the FINDRISK score scale. Sensitivity of FINDRISK score to FBG was 100% and specificity was 60%. Conclusion: As a result of findings in this study indicate that It was determined that the risk of DM was high in the first degree relatives of the patients hospitalized with Type-2 DM and the FINDRISK score scale was a good scale in predicting new asymptomatic Type 2 diabetes.

Objective: This study aims to determine the effects of cachexia, causing major problems in the world and Turkey, on self-care agency and quality of life in cancer patients. Methods: The population of this cross-sectional and relationship-seeking study consisted of cancer patients in Turkey from April 1 to April 20, 2021. Using the snowball sampling method, 174 patients were sampled. 'Patient Information Form,' 'The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer C30 Cancer Quality of Life Scale,' and 'Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale' were used as data collection tools. Results: In the study, 52 patients (29.9%) were found to have cachexia. Function, general well-being, symptom (except insomnia), and self-care agency, which are subdimensions of the quality-of-life scale, were found to be significantly lower in patients with cachexia than patients without cachexia (P < 0.001). It was determined that there was a significant negative correlation between the cachexia status of the patients and the five basic functions in the functional scale (physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social function), general well-being, and self-care agency, and there was a significant positive correlation between the cachexia status of the patients and the symptom scale (P < 0.001). According to the results of multiple linear regression analysis, it was found that the factor that significantly affected the cachexia status of the patients was their self-care agency (P < 0.001). Conclusions: It was determined that cachexia caused significantly lower self-care agency and quality of life in cancer patients. Furthermore, quality of life was related to self-care agency.

Knowing and Use Situations of Hemovigilance System in the Scope of Blood Transfusion Safety of Nurses: Rural Example

    Demirag, Hatice; Hintistan, Sevilay

Objective: This study was carried out to determine the nurses' knowledge of the hemovigilance system and their use of it, within the scope of blood transfusion safety. Methods: The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study consisted of all nurses (n=65) working at Gumushane State Hospital. The data were collected with Structured Question Form Number, percentage, mean, Continuity Correction, Pearson Chi-Square and Fisher Exact tests were used to evaluate the data. Results: Of the nurses, 90.8% were women, the average age was 27.01 +/- 5.16 (20-48) years and 86.1% had undergraduate or higher education. Of the nurses, 84.6% knew that they were supervised by a hemovigilance nurse. Nurses (43.1%) who received training on the hemovigilance system had higher levels of knowing that each unit of blood taken from the donor follows the final destination (100.0%) than the nurses who did not receive training (p <0.05). The nurses who knew that they were supervised during transfusion related processes performed the following steps at a higher rate than those who did not know that they were inspected (p <0.05): Wearing gloves before the application (100.0%), using appropriate branches in children (87.3%), obtaining written consent before blood transfusion (100.0%), and completing the blood transfusion within a maximum of four hours (87.3%) were higher than nurses who did not know that they were supervised (p <0.05). Also; the majority of nurses (90.8%) were determined to use the current procedures for blood transfusions. Conclusion: In line with the findings of the study, it was stated that the nurses who were educated about the hemovigilance system and who knew that they were supervised by the hemovigilance nurse, had high hemovigilance system usage.

Coronavirus disease 2019 infection and nursing in patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment

    Demirag, Hatice; Hintistan, Sevilay

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis treatment are at a high risk of serious complications if infections occur because of suppressed immune system, cardiovascular disease, and important comorbidities, such as diabetes mellitus. To control and prevent the spread of the outbreak to patients and other healthcare professionals, it is necessary to be informed about COVID-19, to diagnose cases early, and to be treated. The purpose of this review is to discuss the communication, transport, predialysis screening and triage, and COVID-19 nursing management in patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment.
