Background/objective Psychological well-being disorders are increasingly prevalent among young people. While physical activity is known to benefit psychological well-being, the mechanisms-particularly the role of physical self-perception and gender in recreational context remain underexplored. Grounded in the Conservation of Resources (COR) Theory, this study investigates the mediating role of physical self-perception in the relationship between recreational physical activity and psychological well-being and examines whether gender moderates this mediation among youth aged 15-24.Methods A descriptive-relational survey design was employed. The sample comprised 468 young adults (58.5% male, 41.5% female; M_age = 20.08) who regularly participated in recreational physical activities. Data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP), and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Mediation and moderation analyses were conducted using PROCESS macro-Models 4 and 7.Results The direct effect of physical activity on psychological well-being was not significant. However, physical self-perception fully mediated the relationship between physical activity and psychological well-being (indirect effect: beta = 0.219, 95% CI [0.151, 0.290]). Among the sub-dimensions of physical self-perception, body attractiveness had the strongest mediating effect. Moderation analysis revealed that gender did not significantly moderate the mediation pathways (a path: p = 0.156; b path: p = 0.954). The mediation mechanism operated with similar strength in both males and females. Conclusion Recreational physical activity improves psychological well-being entirely through the enhancement of physical self-perception, supporting the COR theory that physical activity acts as a resource investment. This mechanism is universal across genders in recreational settings. Interventions aiming to improve youth psychological well-being should not only promote physical activity but specifically focus on fostering positive physical self-perception and body image in inclusive, non-judgmental environments.

Game-based and individualized movement training improves physiological and motor outcomes in young adults with autism spectrum disorder: an experimental study from Türkiye

Aydın, Ahmet Serhat; Söyler, Mehmet; Zileli, Raif; Halmatov, Medera; Gürkan, Alper Cenk; Akcan, İbrahim Orkun; Yılmaz, Coşkun

Background: This study aims to examine the effects of game-based and individualized movement training (GBIMT) program on physiological (body weight, body fat percentage, BMI) and motor outcomes (balance, reaction time, motor speed) in young adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: An experimental design with pre-test–post-test control groups was used in the study. A total of 20 participants (10 in the experimental group, 10 in the control group) with a mean age of 22.2 ± 4.8 years were monitored for eight weeks. The experimental group participated in GBIMT sessions for 60 min per day, two days per week, while the control group continued their usual educational routines. Body composition (InBody 270 Body Composition Analyzer, model Plus 270, South Korea), balance (TechnoGym, Cesena, Italy), reaction time (BlazePod Ltd., Israel), and motor speed (Computerized Tapping Test, Neurosoft Inc., USA) parameters were used as measurements. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA results indicated a significant reduction in body weight in terms of the experimental group (p = 0.014, η² = 0.289). Large effect sizes were observed for body fat percentage and BMI; however, the group × time interactions were not found to be statistically significant. A significant improvement was observed in the motor speed parameter within the experimental group (p = 0.032, η² = 0.231). Reaction time decreased by 9.8%, although the group × time interaction stayed within the significance limit (p = 0.063). A trend toward improvement was observed in balance parameters; however, no statistically significant difference was found. Conclusion: The findings indicate that GBIMT produced significant improvements in body composition and motor speed after implementing for eight weeks, and also showed a strong tendency to affect reaction time. As a controlled experimental study conducted in Türkiye, this research offers a unique contribution to the literature by demonstrating the effects of game-based and individualized movement programs on both physiological and motor outcomes in individuals with ASD. Sustainable Nutrition Behaviors and Physical Activity Attitudes Among College Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

    Kurtbeyoglu, Emine; Kaya, Aleyna

Objective: This study aimed to examine sustainable nutrition behaviors and attitudes toward physical activity among college students. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: College setting. Participants: The study included 303 college students (171 female, 132 male). Main Outcome Measure: Sustainable nutrition behaviors were assessed using the Behaviors Scale Towards Sustainable Nutrition, whereas beliefs and attitudes related to physical activity were measured using the Exercise Health Belief Model Scale. Anthropometric measurements, including body weight and waist circumference, were obtained by researchers. Analysis: Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses, as appropriate, and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted. Results: Sustainable nutrition behavior scale total scores were positively correlated with exercise Health Belief Model scores (r = 0.444, P < 0.001) and negatively correlated with body mass index (r = −0.142, P = 0.01) and waist circumference (r = −0.169, P = 0.003). After adjusting for sex, academic level, and income level, sustainable nutrition behaviors remained significantly associated with attitudes toward physical activity (β = 0.400, P < 0.001), explaining 22.6% of the variance (R² = 0.226). Conclusions and Implications: Students with more positive attitudes toward physical activity are more likely to engage in sustainable nutrition behaviors. Integrated health promotion strategies addressing both physical activity and sustainable nutrition may support healthier and more sustainable lifestyles among college students.

The effect of anthropometric measurements and muscle endurance of the trunk and lower extremities on anatomic body awareness in healthy individuals with different levels of physical activity

    Koca, Rabia; Şen, Müşerref Ebru

Background: The interaction between anthropometric measurements and muscular endurance and how these factors manifest in anatomical body awareness have not yet been fully investigated. It was aimed to examine the relationship between physical activity, body anthropometric measurements and endurance and anatomical body awareness in healthy individuals. Materials and methods: A total of 217 individuals aged 19–40 participated in the study. Participants were categorized into inactive (n = 65), minimally active (n = 80), and sufficiently active (n = 72) groups based on the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ). Anthropometric measurements including shoulder, abdomen, waist, and hip circumferences were taken. Participants’ trunk muscle endurance and lower extremity endurance was assessed through various tests. Anatomic body awareness was evaluated using the Body Awareness Questionnaire (BAQ) with established validity. Results: While no significant difference in shoulder circumference measurements was found between the inactive and minimally active groups (p > 0.05), the sufficiently active group showed significantly higher shoulder circumference measurements compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Significant differences were observed among all endurance tests between the groups (p < 0.05). Participants’ body endurance increased significantly with higher activity levels. Moreover, anatomic body awareness exhibited significant variation among the three groups (p < 0.05), with the sufficiently active group having the highest level of anatomic body awareness. Positive correlations were found between all endurance tests and anatomic body awareness (p < 0.05), as well as a positive correlation between physical activity levels and anatomic body awareness (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It is suggested that physical performance and endurance increase anatomical body awareness when applied with appropriate treatment methods, can be applied for a healthier life and can be an additional application in the clinical environment.

    Kartal, Fatma; Rakicioglu, Neslisah

Purpose: The present study was aimed to define the quantities and types of foods consumed by adolescents during use of media tools to evaluate the contribution of energy and nutrient intake during the use of media tools to daily energy and nutrient intake. Methods: A total of 73 adolescents who visits an internet cafe, were included in the study. Participants were evaluated when they were using a computer in an internet cafe, food consumptions during the use of media tools and daily consumption and physical activity level were recorded. Results: It has been found that consumption of cakes, pastries and cookies during the use of media tools constitute more than half of daily consumption. At the same time, consumption of oily seeds, consumption of sweet foods and saturated fat consumption during the use of media tools were contributed to the daily consumption significantly. It was found that, adolescents consumed less egg, legumes, milk and dairy products, and vegetables in front of the media tools (p<0.05). A significant correlation was observed between the energy and fat content of foods consumed in front of media tools, and obesity. Also, time spend in the internet cafe are increasing as the energy intake during the use of the media tools increases (p<0.05). Conclusion: Consequently it is necessary to reduce the time spend in front of media tools and regulate the consumed foods during the use of media tools to live a healthier life and reduce the risks of development chronic disease in the future lives.
