- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Future of Clean Cooking Energy Access in Emerging Economies by 2030
Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Unlu, Ramazan; Cakir, Sümeyra Cay; Xanthopoulos, Petros
This study assesses the future of clean energy and technology access for cooking in emerging economic blocs—BRICS, MINT, ASEAN, and MENA—through 2030. Cooking contributes 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with over half of household emissions coming from cooking. Therefore, clean cooking energy is critical for sustainability and human health. The study aims to evaluate the likelihood of achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal of universal clean cooking energy access by 2030 and the 2050 net-zero emissions target. Machine learning techniques, such as support vector regression, gradient boosting, and linear regression, alongside an ensemble approach, provide forecasts for these regions. The findings show a varied outlook. Within ASEAN, two countries are expected to reach 100% clean energy access for cooking by 2030, while two are likely to experience a decline. The MENA region shows stronger progress, with eight countries expected to meet the 2030 target. Among BRICS countries, only India is projected to reach full accessibility, while Russia faces a decline. The MINT countries face challenges, with none expected to meet the target, and Nigeria is projected to experience a decrease in clean energy access. The study concludes that the current trajectory makes achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the 2050 net-zero emissions target unlikely for these regions. Policymakers must reassess their strategies and learn from successful countries to improve outcomes.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025A Safe and Efficient Brain–Computer Interface Using Moving Object Trajectories and LED-Controlled Activation
Aydin, Sefa; Melek, Mesut; Gökrem, Levent
Nowadays, brain–computer interface (BCI) systems are frequently used to connect individuals who have lost their mobility with the outside world. These BCI systems enable individuals to control external devices using brain signals. However, these systems have certain disadvantages for users. This paper proposes a novel approach to minimize the disadvantages of visual stimuli on the eye health of system users in BCI systems employing visual evoked potential (VEP) and P300 methods. The approach employs moving objects with different trajectories instead of visual stimuli. It uses a light-emitting diode (LED) with a frequency of 7 Hz as a condition for the BCI system to be active. The LED is assigned to the system to prevent it from being triggered by any involuntary or independent eye movements of the user. Thus, the system user will be able to use a safe BCI system with a single visual stimulus that blinks on the side without needing to focus on any visual stimulus through moving balls. Data were recorded in two phases: when the LED was on and when the LED was off. The recorded data were processed using a Butterworth filter and the power spectral density (PSD) method. In the first classification phase, which was performed for the system to detect the LED in the background, the highest accuracy rate of 99.57% was achieved with the random forest (RF) classification algorithm. In the second classification phase, which involves classifying moving objects within the proposed approach, the highest accuracy rate of 97.89% and an information transfer rate (ITR) value of 36.75 (bits/min) were achieved using the RF classifier.

This paper presents a sentiment analysis combining the lexicon-based and machine learning (ML)-based approaches in Turkish to investigate the public mood for the prediction of stock market behavior in BIST30, Borsa Istanbul. Our main motivation behind this study is to apply sentiment analysis to financial-related tweets in Turkish. We import 17189 tweets posted as "#Borsaistanbul, #Bist, #Bist30, #Bist100″ on Twitter between November 7, 2022, and November 15, 2022, via a MAXQDA 2020, a qualitative data analysis program. For the lexicon-based side, we use a multilingual sentiment offered by the Orange program to label the polarities of the 17189 samples as positive, negative, and neutral labels. Neutral labels are discarded for the machine learning experiments. For the machine learning side, we select 9076 data as positive and negative to implement the classification problem with six different supervised machine learning classifiers conducted in Python 3.6 with the sklearn library. In experiments, 80 % of the selected data is used for the training phase and the rest is used for the testing and validation phase. Results of the experiments show that the Support Vector Machine and Multilayer Perceptron classifier perform better than other classifiers with 0.89 and 0.88 accuracy and AUC values of 0.8729 and 0.8647 respectively. Other classifiers obtain approximately a 78,5 % accuracy rate. It is possible to increase sentiment analysis accuracy with parameter optimization on a larger, cleaner, and more balanced dataset by changing the pre-processing steps. This work can be expanded in the future to develop better sentiment analysis using deep learning approaches.

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of green investment on environmental degradation in developing countries using machine learning-based estimation combined with robustness tests of static and dynamic panel data modeling techniques. The scope of this study covers 30 developing countries for 2009–2019. This study introduces a new index of environmental degradation that uses the entropy method and includes green gas emissions and deforestation. The study addresses trade openness, the quadratic shape of economic growth, and urbanization in the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis (EKC) and the Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT), in addition to green investment. This study considers the kernel-based regularized least squares (KRLS) approach, the static panel technique Driscoll & Kraay standards error method, and a dynamic panel technique system generalized moment techniques. The empirical findings from the machine learning method show that green investment significantly reduces environmental degradation with a higher coefficient resulting from the static fixed effect estimation. The study also reveals that the main hypotheses, such as EKC and EMT, are confirmed by all estimation techniques. Based on the results, the study recommends that policymakers take pragmatic steps toward green investments and increase the financing of green energy initiatives to combat environmental degradation.

Catal Reis, Hatice
Automatic and early detection of diseases in crops is important for producers in terms of product yield. Methods are needed to diagnose the disease and select interventions for tomato leaf. This study aims to create a novel framework for automatically extracting tomato leaf disease. The recommended method automatically detects diseases in three classes: healthy, early, and late blight. This study developed a multi-deep and meta-learning fusion framework that automatically combines modern deep-learning algorithms and meta-classifiers to detect tomato leaf disease. The study includes CNN, transformer, and MLP-based models previously trained with the ImageNet dataset and voting classifier (VtC) methods, which are meta-classifiers. Hybrid approaches have been developed using the VtC method and deep learning algorithms such as CoAtNet, FasterNet, FastViT, WaveMLP, and DenseNet201. In addition to the proposed hybrid framework, different types of deep learning models based on CNN, transformer, MLP, transfer learning, and the dataset improved by the CLAHE technique and the original dataset were used to diagnose tomato leaf diseases. While CNN-based modern architectures include DenseNet201, MobileNet, LCNet, GhostNet, CoAtNet, ConvMixer, and FasterNet, transformer architectures include BeiT, FlexiViT, MaxViT, FastViT, and MLP-based architectures include MLP mixer and WaveMLP models. In the classification performed with original images, the proposed method produced incorrect results in only five images among 900 test data. In the classification made with CLAHE images, the proposed hybrid framework produced the most successful result in this study, producing incorrect results in only four images.

Günen, Mehmet Akif
Detecting building rooftops with very high-resolution (VHR) images is an important issue in many fields, including disaster management, urban planning, and climate change research. Buildings with varying geometrical features are challenging to detect accurately from VHR image due to complicated image scenes containing spectrally similar objects, illumination, occlusions, viewing angles, and shadows. This study aims to detect building rooftops with high accuracy using a new framework that includes VHR image, visible band difference vegetation index, digital surface and elevation models, the terrain ruggedness and the topographic position index. Five distinct feature sets were generated in order of importance by exposing the ten related stacking features to a feature selection procedure using the maximum relevance minimum redundancy method. Then, Auto-Encoder, k-NN, decision tree, RUSBoost, and random forest machine learning algorithms were utilized for binary classification. Random forest yielded the highest accuracy (97.2% F-score, 98.72% accuracy) when all features (F10) were used, while decision tree was the least successful (59.16% F-score, 83.56% accuracy) for RGB feature set (FRGB). It was revealed that classification of F10 with random forest increased F-score by about 23% compared to classification with FRGB. Additionally, McNemar’s tests showed no statistically significant difference between random forest vs k-NN and decision tree vs RUSBoost.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Optimizing Memristor-Based Synaptic Devices for Enhanced Energy Efficiency and Accuracy in Neuromorphic Machine Learning
Gökgöz, Baki; Aydin, Tolga; Gül, Fatih
The traditional Von Neumann computing architecture, which necessitates data transfer between external memory and the processor, incurs significant energy and time costs when running deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) architectures. The primary issue with the energy and time efficiency of this architecture stems from the frequent and intensive data transfers between memory and the processor. Therefore, memristive synaptic devices are utilized to overcome this energy and time inefficiency while performing cognitive tasks. The fundamental working principle of memristive devices is to reduce the need for data transfer by combining memory and processing in the same location, thereby significantly decreasing both energy consumption and the time required for operations. However, to achieve the desired level of efficiency in terms of energy and time consumption from neuromorphic systems, the performance of these systems needs to be further improved with respect to accuracy and test error rates for classification applications. Achieving high accuracy performance in such deep learning or machine learning models necessitates optimization processes not only at the hardware level but also at the algorithmic level. In this context, this paper presents a comprehensive examination and comparison of the frequently used SGD and its momentum variants for deep learning and machine learning applications in memristor-based neuromorphic computing systems. The study thoroughly investigates the performance of critical metrics such as the learning properties, energy efficiency, and accuracy rates of the nano-scale titanium dioxide (TiO2) based synaptic device. The experimental results for the MNIST dataset showed AdaDelta 89.48%, AdaGrad 79.00%, Adam 79.13%, AdaMax 79.68%, Momentum 88.55%, Nadam 81.20%, RMSprop 84.91% and SGD 89.47% accuracy. The experimental results for the CIFAR dataset showed AdaDelta 90.51%, AdaGrad 82.08%, Adam 83.10%, AdaMax 81.76%, Momentum 91.25%, Nadam 82.45%, RMSprop 88.11% and SGD 90.21% accuracy. 2024 The Authors. The estimation of heat transfer coefficients (HTC) and pressure drop (Delta P) in flow boiling processes is essential for the effective design and operation of refrigeration systems. In this study, the artificial neural network (ANN), locally weighted regression (LWR), and gradient boosted machine (GBM) methods are employed to predict the boiling heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and pressure drop (Delta P\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}Δ P\end{document}) in flow boiling of R134a. The study focuses on horizontally positioned both straight and microfin tubes. The ANN, LWR, and GBM methodologies are utilized to ascertain the parameters of boiling HTC and Delta P as outputs. These parameters are determined by considering the mass flux, saturation pressure, heat flux, vapor quality, Reynolds number, Lockhart-Martinelli parameter, Froud number, Weber number, and Bond number as inputs. The training dataset is partitioned into 5 sections for the purpose of hyperparameter tweaking for each model. Out of these sections, 4 parts, consisting of approximately 111 samples, are utilized for training, while 1 part, including around 27 samples, is allocated for validation. The optimal hyperparameters are determined by calculating the average R2 score over the 5 validation sets. Using raw measurements, HTC and Delta P are successfully modeled using a relatively much smaller dataset of 174 measurements, with 82.4% R2 score and 0.7% weighted average relative deviation for HTC, and 88.9% R2 score and 4.1% weighted average relative deviation for Delta P across multiple tube types, achieved by LWR algorithm. Model performances are validated with an extrapolation test and found to be consistent with traditional train-validation-test sampling scheme with 75.9% R2 score and -6.2% weighted average relative deviation for HTC, and 89.3% R2 score and -3.9% weighted average relative deviation for Delta P, showing the consistency of the hypotheses created by a hybrid of parametric and nonparametric model families even outside the observed measurement range for multiple tube types. Local weighted regression models are the most performant, especially for limited data availability. However, calculated measurements increase error rates, suggesting that HTC and Delta P models work best with raw measurements.

Bowler, Alexander; Ozturk, Samet; di Bari, Vincenzo; Glover, Zachary J.; Watson, Nicholas J.
In manufacturing environments, real-time monitoring of yoghurt fermentation is required to maintain an optimal production schedule, ensure product quality, and prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Ultrasonic sensors combined with machine learning models offer the potential for non-invasive process monitoring. However, methods are required to ensure the models are robust to changing ultrasonic measurement distributions as a result of changing process conditions. As it is unknown when these changes in distribution will occur, domain adaptation methods are needed that can be applied to newly acquired data in real-time. In this work, yoghurt fermentation processes are monitored using non-invasive ultrasonic sensors. Furthermore, a transmission based method is compared to an industrially-relevant non-transmission method which does not require the sound wave to travel through the fermenting yoghurt. Three machine learning algorithms were investigated including fully-connected neural networks, fully-connected neural networks with long short-term memory layers, and convolutional neural networks with long short-term memory layers. Three real-time domain adaptation strategies were also evaluated, namely; feature alignment, prediction alignment, and feature removal. The most accurate method (mean squared error of 0.008 to predict pH during fermentation) was non-transmission based and used convolutional neural networks with long short-term memory layers, and a combination of all three domain adaption methods.

Flaxseed oil is one of the popular edible oils, and its adulteration has become a concern because of its high commodity value. Therefore, there is a need to detect adulterated flaxseeds with a rapid, non-invasive, and simple method to keep the quality of flaxseed oil. This study aimed to develop a machine learning algorithm and information theory to detect adulterated flaxseed oils by vibrational spectroscopy units combined with chemometrics. Oil spectra were collected with portable/handheld vibrational spectroscopic units and analyzed using conditional entropy, support vector machines (SVM), and soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) to generate classification models to identify the pureness of oils and partial least square regression (PLSR) to predict the adulterant levels and fatty acid distributions. Conditional entropy showed that two or three wavenumbers/shifts could discriminate the oils using machine learning algorithms with an accuracy of over 95%. SIMCA models determined the oils with an interclass distance (ICD) over 1.1. Specifically, the Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) unit provided the best classification of the oils with ICD over 4.9. All instruments showed good performance in predicting fatty acids and adulteration levels with rval≥0.89 and standard error prediction (SEP) ≤1.7%. Overall, these portable/handheld units showed great potential for rapid, simple, and non-invasive monitoring to identify adulterated flaxseed oils.

Melek, Mesut
In the last month of 2019, a new virus emerged in China, spreading rapidly and affecting the whole world. This virus, which is called corona, is the most contagious type of virus that humanity has ever encountered. The virus has caused a huge crisis worldwide as it leads to severe infections and eventually death in humans. On March 11, 2020, it was announced by the World Health Organization that a COVID-19 outbreak has occurred. Computer-aided digital technologies, which eliminate many problems and provide convenience in people's lives, did not leave humanity alone in this regard and rushed to provide a solution for this unfortunate event. One of the important aspects in which computer-aided digital technologies can be effective is the diagnosis of the disease. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), which is a standard and precise technique for diagnosing the disease, is an expensive and time-consuming method. Moreover, its availability is not the same all over the world. For this reason, it can be very attractive and important to distinguish the COVID-19 disease from a cold or flu through a cough sound analysis via smartphones which have entered into the lives of many people in recent years. In this study, we proposed a machine learning-based system to distinguish patients with COVID-19 from non-COVID-19 patients by analyzing only a single cough sound. Two different data sets were used, one accessible for the public and the other available on request. After combining the data sets, the features were obtained from the cough sounds using the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) method, and then, they were classified with seven different machine learning classifiers. To determine the optimum values of hyperparameters for MFCCs and classifiers, the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO-CV) strategy was implemented. Based on the results, the k-nearest neighbors classifier based on the Euclidean distance (kNN Euclidean) with the accuracy rate, sensitivity of COVID-19, sensitivity of non-COVID-19, F-measure, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.9833, 1.0000, 0.9720, 0.9799, and 0.9860, respectively, is more successful than other classifiers. Finally, the best and most effective features were determined for each classifier using the sequential forward selection (SFS) method. According to the results, the proposed system is excellent compared with similar studies in the literature and can be easily used in smartphones and facilitate the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients. In addition, since the used data set includes reflex and unconscious coughs, the results showed that conscious or unconscious coughing has no effect on the diagnosis of COVID-19 patients based on the cough sound.

Remote sensing (RS) effectively identifies, analyzes, and monitors wetlands. In addition to these two-dimensional studies, RS is used with several techniques in determining shallow water depths. The primary purpose of this study is to obtain shallow wetland bathymetry utilizing spectral reflections obtained at different water depths by field study and satellite images. Machine learning (ML) algorithms, which are widely used in remote sensing, are used in this study. Four algorithms were selected as random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), Neural Networks (NN), and Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC). Since machine learning algorithms use training samples/datasets, the classification accuracy is directly related to selecting these data. The effect of pixel counts on classification was investigated by using two different training data set also. Duden (Kulu) Lake, which is a shallow wetland, was chosen as the study area. The Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique (ISODATA) classification algorithm divided into as many clusters as possible was applied on Sentinel-2 multispectral images. All classes were rede-fined using measured spectral signatures and were created a bathymetric map. This map was used as reference data in creating training sets and the accuracy assessment of ML algorithms. When the water surface areas obtained from algorithms were compared with the bathymetric map and Normalized Difference Water Index, the best result was obtained with RF. According to the accuracy assessment results, it was seen that the number of training data affects the accuracy, and the best results were obtained with SVM and RF algorithms with training data containing more pixels (overall accuracy 93.87% and 92.64, kappa 0.89 and 0.87, respectively).

Medicine and engineering sciences have been working in close contact for common purposes. Machine learning algorithms are used in the medical field for early diagnosis prediction. The major aim of this study is to evaluate machine learning algorithms and deep learning algorithms using computed tomography scan (CT-scan) images for automated detection of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. We obtained seven hundred and fifty-seven (757) CT-scan images from a public platform. We applied four automated traditional classification methods to predict COVID-19 using deep learning and machine learning. These algorithms are SVM, AdaBoost, NASNetMobile, and InceptionV3. Comparative analyses are presented among the four models by considering metric performance factors to find the best model. The results show that the InceptionV3 model achieves better performance in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, Cohen’s kappa, F1-score, root mean squared error (RMSE), and receiver operating characteristic-area under the curve (ROC-AUC), in comparison with the other Covid-19 classifiers. Accordingly, the InceptionV3 approach is recommended for the automatic diagnosis of Covid-19 and assessments. This research can present a second point of view to medical experts and it can save time for researchers as the performance of standard machine learning methods in detecting COVID-19 is evaluated.

Reis, Hatice Catal; Khoshelham, Kourosh
In historical buildings, surface cracks are important indicators of potential structural damage. Natural disasters and indirect human factors, which are frequently encountered in recent periods, negatively affect historical buildings and structures. Fast and cost-effective crack detection methods play a key role in structural health monitoring of historical buildings. This paper presents methodologies for identifying concrete cracks using deep learning. We propose ReCRNet, a deep learning architecture designed for classifying images of cracks. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and compared with state-of-the-art methods such as AlexNet, VGG 19, linear support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree (DT). The results show that ReCRNet achieves better performance in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC), in comparison with the other crack classifiers. Accordingly, the proposed approach is recommended for automatic monitoring of historical buildings and building condition assessments.

In this study, decision tree and artificial neural network methods were used as machine learning techniques to investigate the impact of factors on accident lost day duration. Degree of injury, worker age, and worker activity were found to be the top three variables impacting loss of time from work. It was also identified that the mining method, location, and nature of injury had a moderate influence on duration lost due to occupational accidents. However, worker experience and ore type did not have any significant impact on the duration, which is an unexpected result. These results confirmed that some accident factors that might have a large influence on the number of mine accidents can be less critical when it comes to accident lost day duration.
