- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Bioethanol Production from Mulberry Molasses Waste with Ohmic-Assisted Hydrodistillation
Tunç, Merve Tuğçe; Genç, Berna; Karataş, Şeyda Merve
In this study, the fermentation process of bioethanol production conditions were optimized by response surface methodology. Mulberry molasses production waste was used as the only carbon source for yeast fermentation to produce bioethanol. Hydrodistillation (HD) and ohmic-assisted hydrodistillation (OAHD) methods were employed to concentrate the bioethanol. Fermentation time (48–168 h), waste matter rate (5–45%) and pH (5–7) were selected as independent variables. Alcohol concentration was treated as the response. Optimum fermentation conditions were determined as 96.894 h fermentation time, 45% waste ratio and pH 7. At these optimum conditions, alcohol concentration was determined as 3.77 ± 0.33%. While the distillate obtained in the HD method contained 22.50 ± 1.89% alcohol, it showed 27.72 ± 0.24% in the OAHD method. The energy consumption values for OAHD and HD was 2.92 ± 0.51 and 53.24 ± 1.74 Wh/mL bioethanol, respectively. Results of study showed that the OAHD could be a cost-effective and green method to distillation of bioethanol from mulberry molasses waste.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Trends and amount changes of temperature and precipitation under future projections in high–low groups and intra-period for the Eastern Black Sea, the Wettest Basin in Türkiye
Nacar, Sinan; Şan, Murat; Kankal, Murat; Okkan, Umut
This study investigates the possible effects of climate change on temperature and precipitation variables in the Eastern Black Sea Basin, Türkiye’s wettest and flood-prone region. The outputs of three GCMs under historical, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5 scenarios were downscaled to regional scale using the multivariate adaptive regression splines method. The future monthly temperature and precipitation for 12 stations in the basin were projected for three periods: the 2030s (2021–2050), 2060s (2051–2080), and 2090s (2081–2100). In addition to relative changes, high and low groups and intra-period trends were analyzed for the first time using innovative methods. For the pessimistic scenario, an increase of 3.5 °C in the interior and 3.0 °C in the coastal areas of the basin is projected. For the optimistic scenario, these values are expected to be 2.5 and 2.0 °C, respectively. A decrease in precipitation is projected for the interior region, and a significant increase is expected for the eastern and coastal areas of the basin, especially in spring. This result indicates that floods will occur frequently coastal areas of the basin in the coming periods. Also, although the monotonic trends of temperatures during periods are higher than precipitation in interior regions, these regions may have more uncertainty as their trends are in different directions of low and high groups of different scenarios and GCMs and contribute to all trends, especially precipitation.
- MakaleYalnız künye2024Hydrocarbon migration and structural reservoir traps in the Western Black Sea Basin: evidence from satellite-derived gravity tensor data
Maden, Nafiz; Doğru, Fikret
The Black Sea, situated between Türkiye, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and Russia, is tectonically separated into two different sub-basins: Eastern and Western Black Sea. These two sub-basins have been a target of interest for oil and gas exploration for several decades. Although the participation of the Black Sea Basin in the global oil market is very small compared to the Caspian Sea, this basin is considered a potential hydrocarbon deposit since both areas have similar characteristics in terms of source rock. In this study, satellite-derived Bouguer and free-air gravity data were interpreted to disclose the prospective hydrocarbon reservoirs and gas hydrate deposits within the Western Black Sea Basin. The locations of the maxima identified in the I2 invariants map were assessed as five substantial hydrocarbon prospective zones three of which are in the Turkish Exclusive Economic Zone. Numerous oil and gas seeps are evidence of lateral and vertical hydrocarbon migration from the source rock through major faults in the WBSB where the maximum I2 anomalies are observed.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Mobile care app development process: using the ADDIE model to manage symptoms after breast cancer surgery (step 1)
Aydin, Aydanur; Gürsoy, Ayla; Karal, Hasan
The use of mobile applications is widespread in patient monitoring or education today. This study aims to describe the design and development process of a mobile app that supports patient self-care after breast cancer surgery. We used the ADDIE model to develop and test the mobile app. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) is a systematic approach based on a standard instructional design model for creating training materials. The model consists of five phases, each with its own set of steps. Once the steps within each phase are completed, the model progresses to the next phase, ultimately resulting in a “usable” product. Different team collaborations were established within each phase, and support was obtained from multiple experts during the design process. Thanks to this model, the information that patients need was transformed into a technological product. This article, which explains the stages of the product design process for mobile applications, provides information that may be helpful to researchers working on similar products.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Effect of individual characteristics, risk perception, self-efficacy and social support on willingness to relocate due to floods and landslides
Mızrak, Sefa; Turan, Melikşah
People may have to leave their home, environment, region and country because of disasters or disaster risks. Effective and efficient disaster risk reduction activities involving the community can reduce disaster risks and enable people to reside more safely and peacefully in their environment. The objective of this study was to investigate whether individual characteristics, risk perception, self-efficacy and perceived social support were correlated with the willingness to relocate due to floods and landslides. The data were collected from 947 people residing in Gümüşhane Province (Türkiye) using a survey. In the study, a total of ten models were tested with the help of ordinal logistic regression analysis. Consequently, the participants' willingness to relocate due to landslides was determined to be higher than the willingness to relocate due to floods. University students and people with chronic diseases and flood and landslide experiences had a greater willingness to relocate. Residence duration and informal social support were negatively correlated with relocation willingness. Those who believed that they could protect themselves in the event of a flood and landslide were more likely to relocate. Among risk perceptions, probability increased relocation willingness mostly due to floods, while fear increased relocation willingness mostly due to landslides. This study attempted to provide policy makers and scientists insight into disaster risk reduction and disaster risk communication related to relocation.
- Derleme MakaleYalnız künye2023A Comprehensive Review of Computer-based Techniques for R-Peaks/QRS Complex Detection in ECG Signal
Dogan, Hulya; Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur
Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, which is composite of multiple segments such as P-wave, QRS complex and T-wave, plays a crucial role in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. For an analysis of cardiac diagnosis, it is required that clinicians scan the ECG signal for QRS complex or R-peaks (the highest peak of the QRS complex) detection, which relies on their expertise and takes enormous time. In order to provide more realistic treatment of cardiovascular diseases, so many computer-based techniques detecting R-peaks/QRS complex in the ECG signal with noises and different characteristics have been actively developed in research article for many years. Moreover, researchers have created various data sets for R-peaks/QRS complex detection. Although R-peaks/QRS complex detection is one of the notable research areas with so many computer-based techniques and ECG data sets, no comprehensive review paper have been published recently. The main aim of this study is to present a wide range of computer-based techniques proposed for detection of R-peaks/QRS complex. First of all, in this study, computer-based techniques proposed in the literature for the detection of R-peaks/QRS complex and their stages are introduced in detail. The generalization ability of these techniques is investigated deeply. Details are given about the most preferred ECG data sets produced in the literature for the analysis of computer-based techniques. Finally, the performances of computer-based techniques and generalization abilities are analyzed for each data set created in the literature by giving the results of the evaluation metrics.
- Derleme MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2022Spatial variations of fundamental seismotectonic parameters for the earthquake occurrences in the Eastern Mediterranean and Caucasus
Ahadov, Bahruz; Ozturk, Serkan
In this study, a comprehensive statistical analysis was made for different parts of the world. For this purpose, fundamental seismotectonic earthquake parameters such as b-value, magnitude completeness, Mc-value stress distribution and moment release were analysed and their interrelationship was investigated. In this context, for the evaluation of earthquake hazard potential, spatial variations of these fundamental parameters were achieved for the Eastern Mediterranean and Caucasus since there do not exist detailed studies including these parameters for these regions of the world. The high-resolution maps of the b-value, Mc-value and stress variance were analysed in the different seismotectonic regions in the Eastern Mediterranean and Caucasus. This study considers the spatial anomalies and correlation models between the b-value, faulting styles, and stress regime and moment release. Lower b-values (b ≤ 1) were observed along with the Main Marmara Fault, eastern Turkey, western Alborz, northern Zagros, south-east Iran and the north-east Caucasus, and these small b-values indicate the active seismic region. Mc level in most of Turkey is in and around 2.8. However, Mc-value is about 3.0 in the Caucasus and about 3.5 level in Iran. This work also includes a stress inversion map in the region based on the focal mechanisms. The normal, strike-slip and a few thrust fault solutions were observed in the research areas. The results show that a combination of these parameters may supply preliminary tools for future researches. Consequently, the spatial pattern of the b-values, moment releases and stress regimes can be used as considerable promise for the predicting of forthcoming seismic hazard regions.
- MakaleYalnız künye2022The role of household demographic factors in shaping transportation spending in Turkey
Coruh, Emine; Urak, Faruk; Bilgic, Abdulbaki; Yen, Steven T.
Factors at the family scale, for which dynamic decisions and proper investments need to be made at the national level in curbing greenhouse gas emissions, are extremely important for policymakers and investors. We provide information on the roles of how household demographic factors shape transportation patterns and spending in Turkey using the latest survey data collected by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TSI). Alternative sample selection models are estimated to accommodate censoring in expenditure, and the dependent single-hurdle model is found to be the preferred model as a result of model specification tests. Also, different specification tests conducted, including the error-independence test, resulted in rejection of the null hypothesis. Results suggest that the majority of the household economic and sociodemographic characteristics are important determinants of both the probability and level of transportation expenditure. Policy recommendations to curb carbon emissions and integrate environmentally friendly transport systems throughout the country are presented.
- MakaleYalnız künye2022Economic Integration, Spatial Interaction and Labour Income Share: Evidence from the EU-13 Countries and the UK
Çelik, Orkun; Karadağ, Metin
We aim to investigate the effect of Single Market Programme on the spatial interaction of labour income share amongst the EU countries. Spatial panel data analysis is used for the aim of the study. The dataset is obtained from AMECO and WDI databases and covers the time period of 1960–2017. The results show that sign of spatial interaction between these countries in term of the labour income share has turned from positive to negative after the Single Market Programme. In other words, the Single Market Programme has induced to decrease the labour income share by negatively affecting the spatial interaction between these countries. In addition, we find that although the negative impacts of capital-output ratio and trade openness on the labour income share decrease, the negative impact of total factor productivity increases after the Single Market Programme. The results of robustness check also confirm our empirical findings.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Seismic performance of a high-rise building by using linear and nonlinear methods
Çavdar, Özlem
In this paper, the seismic behavior of the existing reinforced concrete tall building is investigated by using the linear and nonlinear dynamic methods. The selected existing reinforced concrete structure was designed according to Turkey Seismic Code-2007. The performance analysis according to the Turkey Building Earthquake Code-2019 is realized in a 41-story reinforced concrete shear wall-framed structure in Istanbul where active fault lines are located. For high-rise building, firstly, spectrum analysis according to mode superposition methods of linear computational methods used within the scope of strength-based design is performed. Turkey Building Earthquake Code-2019 advises a nonlinear deformation-based design approach to determine more accurately the behavior of high-rise building, as in the earthquake regulations of other developed countries. In addition, the nonlinear time history analyses of building were performed. At the end of the study, torsional irregularity is seen on the normal floors and intermediate floor; stiffness irregularity was found on second floors. In addition, it has been observed in some of the oblique columns of the building that load bearing capacities were exceeded due to creep, axial compressive loads and severe damages occurred. According to the Turkey Building Earthquake Code-2019, the high-rise reinforced concrete shear wall building is not expected to satisfy life safety performance levels under design earthquake.
- MakaleYalnız künye2021Origin, petrogenesis and geodynamic implications of the early Eocene Altınpınar adakitic andesites in the eastern Sakarya Zone, northeastern Turkey
Gücer, Mehmet Ali
Early Cenozoic magmatism in the eastern Sakarya Zone (NE Turkey) provides an important constraint on the regional tectono-magmatic evolution of the region. Early Eocene syn-collisional adakitic rocks are observed as small stocks with outcropping areas commonly less than 10 km2. This study presents petrography, whole-rock geochemistry and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data, as well as in-situ 40Ar/39Ar age constraints on one of these adakitic andesites in the Altınpınar area of Gümüşhane, and discusses source region, petrological processes and geodynamic setting prevailed during their genesis. Andesites commonly show microlitic porphyric and vitrophyric porphyric textures, and include significant amounts of mafic microgranular enclaves (MMEs). Plagioclase, hornblende, Fe-Ti oxides and minor pyroxene are the main mineral phases. In-situ 40Ar-39Ar amphibole dating constrains the cooling age of andesites into a time span from 52.8 ± 1.3–48.8 ± 1.9 Ma. Andesites are medium to high-K calc-alkaline and display most of the signatures typical of those of the adakites. They are characterized by moderate MgO (1.7–4.1 wt%), low Y (9−14 ppm), Yb (0.9–1.5 ppm), and HREE and high Sr (325−964 ppm) contents, and high Sr/Y (36–76) ratios. 87Sr/86Sr(t) (0.704948−0.705100) and 143Nd/144Nd(t) (0.512588−0.512628) ratios are in the isotopic range of the adakites. All these geochemical and isotopic data suggest that the parental magma of adakitic andesites has been produced by partial melting of oceanic basalts under amphibole-eclogite facies conditions during the breakoff of the northern Neotethyan oceanic slab.
- MakaleYalnız künye2021High-resolution total field magnetic anomaly maps of Lake İznik (NW Turkey): assessment of faults which play important roles in tectonics of the lake
Aktaş, Gülten; Hisarli, Z. Mümtaz; Demirel, A. Sinan
In total, 380 km of marine magnetic data were processed and interpreted to reveal the main tectonic elements that control the formation of the lake. Lake İznik, which is an approximately rectangular-shaped active tectonic basin with 32 km length and 12 km width, is located between two segments of the North Anatolian Fault in the northeast Marmara region, Turkey. The purpose of this study is to identify the tectonic elements that played a role in the formation of Lake İznik with the help of new magnetic data and to reveal the tectonic evolution of the region by using other previously collected geophysical data. The Euler deconvolution, tilt angle, analytic signal and source edge detection methods were applied to the total field magnetic data for Lake İznik and its surroundings to determine the boundaries and depths to the source of magnetism. From the structural map obtained as a result of the review of this data, linearity in the magnetic data was detected along the NW–SE direction in the north of Lake İznik, N–S direction in the west and east, and E–W direction in the south. These lineaments were correlated with a limited amount of seismic data obtained from previous studies and were associated with faults. This linearity in NW–SE direction in the north was evaluated as the continuation of the Orhangazi fault and it is thought to play a significant role in the tectonic evolution of Lake İznik. When the results obtained from this study and the paleomagnetic results for the Eocene volcanic rocks in the study area are evaluated together, Lake İznik was connected with Gemlik Bay and the Marmara Sea during the Eocene–Pleistocene and Orhangazi Fault disconnected Lake İznik from Gemlik Bay in the Pleistocene–Holocene. It was deduced that the lake basin is a pull-apart basin developed up to the present day.
- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2021An automatic EEG-based sleep staging system with introducing NAoSP and NAoGP as new metrics for sleep staging systems
Melek, Mesut; Manshouri, Negin; Kayikcioglu, Temel
Different biological signals are recorded in sleep labs during sleep for the diagnosis and treatment of human sleep problems. Classification of sleep stages with electroencephalography (EEG) is preferred to other biological signals due to its advantages such as providing clinical information, cost-effectiveness, comfort, and ease of use. The evaluation of EEG signals taken during sleep by clinicians is a tiring, time-consuming, and error-prone method. Therefore, it is clinically mandatory to determine sleep stages by using software-supported systems. Like all classification problems, the accuracy rate is used to compare the performance of studies in this domain, but this metric can be accurate when the number of observations is equal in classes. However, since there is not an equal number of observations in sleep stages, this metric is insufficient in the evaluation of such systems. For this purpose, in recent years, Cohen’s kappa coefficient and even the sensitivity of NREM1 have been used for comparing the performance of these systems. Still, none of them examine the system from all dimensions. Therefore, in this study, two new metrics based on the polygon area metric, called the normalized area of sensitivity polygon and normalized area of the general polygon, are proposed for the performance evaluation of sleep staging systems. In addition, a new sleep staging system is introduced using the applications offered by the MATLAB program. The existing systems discussed in the literature were examined with the proposed metrics, and the best systems were compared with the proposed sleep staging system. According to the results, the proposed system excels in comparison with the most advanced machine learning methods. The single-channel method introduced based on the proposed metrics can be used for robust and reliable sleep stage classification from all dimensions required for real-time applications.
- MakaleYalnız künye2021Adaptation of hurricane risk perception scale to earthquake risk perception and determining the factors affecting women's earthquake risk perception
Mızrak, Sefa; Özdemir, Ahmet; Aslan, Ramazan
Worldwide studies show that gender is an important variable affecting disaster risk perception and that women have high levels of disaster risk perception. The objective of this study is to investigate women’s earthquake risk perception as well as the factors that may help predict it. The data of the study were collected from 463 women living in Kocaeli (Turkey) by survey method. The study, which employed ordinary logistic regression analysis, analysed whether the same dependent variable was predicted by different independent variables in five models. Many of the women who participated in the research reported that they were more sensitive to earthquakes. The items with the highest mean among women's affective and cognitive risk perception factors are the items that measure fear and financial perception, respectively. Education and age significantly help predict women’s earthquake risk perception. Living in dread of earthquakes and being depressed and worried for future generations make women feel more sensitive. This study has showed that all the underlying factors affecting women's disaster risk perception should be understood more deeply. It is thought that the results of the study will contribute to studies related to disaster management, risk perception, and women.
