Electricity Prices, Technology, Productivity, And Environmental Degradation: Implications For Financial Stability

Çakir, Mehmet Ali; Ökte, Mehmet Kutlughan Savas

The limited availability of fossil fuels and the financial pressure they create for countries that do not have the resources have led countries to search for new energy sources. In particular, renewable energy sources and therefore electrical energy obtained from these sources have been proposed in the literature as an alternative to fossil fuels. Thus, this study investigates the impact of electricity prices on financial stability in European Union countries from 2010 to 2021 using Driscoll Kraay fixed effects estimation. Financial stability is measured using the bank z-score, while productivity-intensive technology, environmental quality, and economic growth are included as control variables. The findings indicate that an increase in electricity prices negatively affects the bank z-score. In contrast, productivity-intensive technology positively impacts the bank z-score. Similarly, environmental quality contributes to an increase in the bank z-score. Additionally, economic growth enhances financial stability. Considering that rising electricity prices negatively affect financial stability, policymakers should encourage companies to produce electricity from renewable sources, such as solar panels or wind turbines. This can be supported through incentives such as tax breaks or low-cost financing for firms investing in on-site renewable energy systems. In this way, electricity price fluctuations will have less impact on companies and, in turn, help protect financial stability.

Effect of Digital Health Literacy and E-health Literacy on Quality of Life: A systematical Review

    Köse, Asli

Employing the systematic review methodology, this study aims to address how digital health literacy and e-health literacy influence people's quality of life. This systematic review includes studies that examined the effect of e-health literacy and digital health literacy on quality of life. The results of 12 research papers meeting the standards established within the parameters of this study were divided into two groups: ehealth literacy and digital health literacy. The effect of e-health literacy on quality of life was assessed in five of the thirteen studies, whereas that of digital health literacy on quality of life was assessed in eight of them. The study sample consisted of people with cancer, people with long-term conditions like asthma, people who were following their postoperative treatment regimens, people affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, the elderly, women, children, and students. Only one study reported that e-health literacy had a negative influence on quality of life, whereas 11 studies emphasized that digital health and e-health literacy had a positive influence. Policies are required to facilitate the use and access to digital health technology by various societal groups, including patients, the elderly, women with unequal social status, children, and learners.

Electricity in Ottoman Commercial Enterprises as a New Power Source

    Damlibag, Fatih

Until the last quarter of 19th century, steam power was the only available source of power for commercial enterprises. But this power required large amounts of investment. This requirement limited the spread of mechanization. But the invention of electrical motors changed the situation. With its practical usage opportunities, electricity took attention of several commercial enterprises in the Ottoman Empire. According to former steam power, electricity provides both usage easiness and lesser cost opportunity to commercial enterprises. Thanks to electrical engines, relatively small businesses were also able to take decision of mechanization. In this article, there were shown examples from six sectors, who wanted to benefit from electricity in their activities. Entrepreneurs made investments in mining, logistics, jewelry, transportation, ginning and milling, for this new technology. With electricity investments, entrepreneurs wanted to reach seven advantages that there were communication possibility, safer working environment, energy efficiency, better lighting, easy utilization, reduced cost and increased productivity. As to the Ottoman government's approach to these entrepreneurs, the officials did not always eagerly meet their demands. Most of the custom officials were reluctant to accept electrical appliances into the country. But in the end, demands of entrepreneurs were mostly accepted by the government. For the control of these demands, the Ottoman Empire wanted both the purpose of each request and the person responsible for that request to be clearly determined.

An Investigation into the Impact of Influencers Producing Technological Content on Instagram on Customers' Purchasing Decisions

    Çelik, Kamil; Tas, Ahmet

Nowadays, social media influencers play a significant role in the world of marketing. Social media influencers reach large audiences by producing content on social media platforms, and they exert considerable impact on these audiences. The literature suggests that social media users form parasocial relationships, and these relationships develop based on the influencer's characteristics, such as attractiveness, expertise, credibility, and similarity. It has also been proven in various studies that social media influencers have a strong effect on increasing the purchasing intentions of their followers. In this study, the effects of social media influencers on parasocial relationships and the purchasing intentions of their followers were examined. The research was conducted among Instagram users in Turkey, and the data were collected using a survey method. The survey included statements aimed at measuring elements such as parasocial relationships, attractiveness, expertise, credibility, and similarity. Because of the data analysis, it was found that characteristics such as influencers' attractiveness and expertise strengthen parasocial relationships, and these relationships positively influence followers' purchasing intentions. Additionally, the perception of fairness also had a significant impact on these relationships. These findings suggest that social media influencers can be an effective tool in marketing strategies.

Decoding Inflation: Role of Institutional Quality in Türkiye Using Advanced Econometric Techniques

    Çiçen, Yildirim Beyazit

Persistent inflation remains a significant economic challenge in T & uuml;rkiye. The causes of high inflation have been examined through various factors, including supply and demand, as well as monetary and fiscal policies. However, few studies have included institutional factors in their analyses. The objective of this study is to determine whether institutional quality affects inflation in T & uuml;rkiye. A novel and robust econometric analysis method is employed in this study. Between 2005 and 2019, the inflation rate, the International Country Risk Guide's (ICRG) Political Risk Rating index, which measures the quality of institutional structure, and the changes in currency exchange rate basket variables in T & uuml;rkiye were examined using the Fourier KPSS stationarity test and the Fourier Shin cointegration test. The results of the analysis indicate that inflation rate is co-integrated with institutional quality. The deterioration of institutional quality in T & uuml;rkiye between 2005 and 2019 has been associated with an increase in inflation. While the implicit inflation targeting period in the inflation targeting regime implemented in T & uuml;rkiye after 2002 was relatively successful, the explicit inflation targeting period failed to reduce inflation. The primary reason for the inability to achieve the specified inflation targets during these periods is the deterioration in the quality of institutions. It is also important to note that central bank independence is not immune to political influence and is one of the most important factors affecting inflation targeting.

Relationship between Organic Agriculture And GDP Per Capita, Economic Growth, and Unemployment: Panel Data Analysis

    Merdan, Kurtulus

The increase in the world population recently has also increased the need for agricultural products. The need for food products has made it necessary to obtain more products per unit area. At this point, producers have focussed on the use of hormones, chemicals, and fertilisers to increase productivity and meet the demand for cheap food, and the process that increases production in the short term has become a threat to human health in the long term. Over time, the negative effects of chemicals on humans and the environment were observed, forcing producers to seek new methods. This process has led to independent studies on organic agriculture in every country. In this study, the effects of organic agriculture on some economic variables were revealed. In this context, the analyses focus now the variables of area allocated to organic agriculture on a regional basis, production amount and number of producers affected GDP per capita, economic growth, and unemployment in Turkey between 2003 and 2021. The scientific dimension of the study was prepared using data obtained from domestic and foreign literature and the electronic database of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. In this study, in which panel data analysis was used, EViews 12 programme was employed. For the variables used in the study, the geographical region cross-section dependence was determined, and the stationarity of the series was examined with the CIPS (Cross-Sectionally Augmented IPS) unit root test. As a result of the study, it was determined that organic production amount, number of organic farmers, and organic production area did not have a significant effect on economic growth and unemployment. Organic production area and the number of organic farmers had a positive and significant effect on GDP per capita, but the amount of organic production did not have a significant relationship

The Relation between Corruption and Tax Revenues: An Assessment of Transitional economies

Setürk, Nazli Keyifli; Bayraktar, Yuksel; Özyilmaz, Ayfer

Corruption affects many economic, political, and social indicators directly and indirectly. One of the economic costs of corruption is a decrease in tax revenues. In societies where corruption is high, administrators taking bribes for excess revenue may reduce tax administration performance. Therefore, corruption and taxes are closely related to each other. This study analyzes the impact of corruption on different tax types in 6 selected transition economies (Estonia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Latvia and Slovak Republic) in the 1998-2021 and Bootstrap Panel Granger causality method. According to this study, there is unidirectional causality from personal income tax to corruption in Slovakia, from corporate tax and VAT to corruption in Poland, from VAT and SCT to corruption in Hungary, and from VAT to corruption in Latvia. Additionally, there is a bidirectional causal relationship from corruption to personal income tax in Poland and from corruption to corporate tax in the Czech Republic and Hungary, but there is no causal relationship between corruption and VAT and SCT. Personal income and corporate taxes, which require a strong relationship between tax administration and taxpayers, are more affected by corruption than taxes such as VAT and SCT.

Technological Convergence in Emerging Economies: An Investigation with Unit Root Tests

    Zuhal, Mustafa

Technological developments play an important role in economic growth and development and form the basis in the convergence of socioeconomic factors between developed and developing countries, especially income. At the same time, developing countries aim to catch up with the leading countries by improving their technological capabilities, and examining the technological convergence between countries, especially developing countries, is essential at this stage. This study aims to examine whether technological convergence occurs in 10 emerging economies. For this purpose, the study analyzes technological convergence over the variables of number of patents, labor productivity, and total factor productivity using Pesaran's (2007) cross-sectionally augmented Dickey-Fuller (CADF) and seemingly unrelated regression augmented Dickey-Fuller (SURADF) unit root tests. According to the results of the analysis, although there is convergence in some countries, it does not confirm in general technological convergence among the countries.

Public Expenditures, Economic Growth and Income Inequality: Empirical Evidence from the Commonwealth of Independent States

    Recepoglu, Mursit

This study has examined the causality relationship between public expenditures, economic growth and income inequality for transition economies called the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). In the study, in which the 1998-2019 period was analyzed, the effects of public expenditures on economic growth and income inequality were determined with the bootstrap panel causality test. Bootstrap panel causality test results show that there is a one-way causality relationship from public expenditures to economic growth for Armenia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. On the other hand, a one-way causality relationship has been determined from public expenditures to income inequality in Belarus and Kazakhstan, and from income inequality to public expenditures in Kyrgyzstan. In Moldova and Russia, however, no causal relationship could be obtained between the variables. The overall evaluation of the findings obtained from the panel causality tests concluded that public expenditures in CIS member countries are closely related to both economic growth and income inequality. CIS member countries need state interventions in order for the market system to fully settle in transition period. However, implementing policies that do not exclude private investments and do not harm the functioning of the market economy should be elaborated during practicing public expenditure policies in these countries in transition.

The Impact of Environmental Technological Innovations on CO2 Emissions: The Case of OECD Countries

    Akyol, Mehmet; Mete, Emrullah

Global warming and climate change, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, have compelled all countries to reconsider their production factors. Developing technologies to reduce emission volumes has been one of the priority targets for countries. This study investigated the impact of environmental technological innovations on CO2 emissions in 18 OECD members. The panel generalized method of moments (GMM)was employed in the study to produce estimates for the period between 2005 and 2018. Energy consumption, economic growth (GDP), and technological innovation data were used as independent variables in the study, CO2 emissions were used as dependent variable, whereas the number of patents preventing climate change was used as a technological innovation indicator. The analysis results showed that a 1% increase in patent applications for preventing climate change reduced CO2 emissions by 0.02%. However, a 1% increase in energy consumption caused an increase of 0.56% in CO2 emissions. Finally, the 1% increase in the GDP growth rate caused an increase of 0.002% in CO2 emissions.

Do We Need Friendship in the Workplace? The Theory of Workplace Friendship and Employee Outcomes: The Role of Work Ethics

    Ozbek, Mehmet Ferhat

This study builds and tests the models that two types of workplace friendships (friendship with coworkers and friendship with the supervisor) may have a negative influence on employees'job insecurity and turnover intention. Further, this study assumes that the positive association between workplace friendship with a supervisor and job performance is stronger for employees having a low work ethic than for those with a high work ethic. This study also assumes that the negative relationship between friendship with a supervisor and organizational deviance is stronger for employees who have a low work ethic but not for those with a high work ethic. To test these hypotheses, 313 data samples have been collected from service sector employees. According to the results, two types of workplace friendships (friendship with coworkers and friendship with a supervisor) are negatively related to job insecurity and turnover intention. The results also show that friendship with a supervisor was positively associated with job performance for employees having a low work ethic but not for those with a high work ethic. Furthermore, the results show that friendship with a supervisor was negatively associated with organizational deviance for employees having a low work ethic but not for those with a high work ethic. Surprisingly, the friendship with a supervisor is positively associated with organizational deviance for employees having a high work ethic.
