Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation using the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative

Şahin, Yasin; Merdan, Mehmet; Açıkgöz, Pınar

Purpose – The aim of the paper titled “Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell–Whitehead–Segel (NWS) equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative” is to develop a new numerical method for solving the NWS equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative. This method involves the combination of the Caputo-Fabrizio Elzaki transformation and the q-homotopy analysis transformation method. The study aims to analyze the NWS equation that models the reaction-diffusion dynamics in biological and chemical systems. The convergence analysis of the proposed method is performed, and the obtained solutions are visualized with two- and three-dimensional graphics using the Maple software. The results show that the proposed method is more powerful and effective than the existing methods. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, a hybrid analytical-numerical method is developed to solve the NWS equation formulated using the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative. The method is a combination of: q-homotopy analysis method (q-HATM) and Shehu transformation technique (ST). By combining these two powerful methods, a solution approach that does not require linearization or complex calculations for nonlinear fractional partial differential equations, converges quickly and gives high accuracy results, is presented. The obtained solutions are tested for numerical accuracy and are supported graphically. Findings – In the article titled “Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation using the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative”, the authors propose a new hybrid method for solving the time-fractional NWS equation. This method is a combination of the q-HATM and the ST. The proposed q-HSATM provides an efficient and lightweight approach for solving nonlinear fractional partial differential equations without requiring linearization, discretization or complex polynomials. This hybrid technique obtains the approximate analytical solution of the NWS equation using the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative. The method provides fast convergence and high accuracy with less memory and processing power requirements. It also stands out as a reliable tool for modeling complex systems in applied sciences such as physics, biology and engineering. In conclusion, this study provides an effective and applicable method for solving nonlinear differential equations formulated with the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative, making a significant contribution to the field of fractional calculus. Originality/value – This section of the article titled “Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell-Whitehead-Segel equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative” can be summarized as follows: This study is one of the first hybrid q-HATM and ST-based methods developed to solve the NWS equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative operator. Its unique aspects: Unlike traditional methods, it provides models more suitable for physical systems by working with the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative, which includes the memory effect and whose kernel function is not exponential. The presented method presents a new and powerful analytical-numerical technique that can produce approximate solutions with high accuracy without requiring linearization or discretization. The developed technique is valuable not only theoretically but also with its applicability to reaction-diffusion systems in applied sciences.

Psychological determinants and consumer acceptance of cultured meat: a multi-dimensional analysis among Turkish adults

    Akduman, Gul; Kurtbeyoglu, Emine

Purpose – The environmental, ethical and health issues associated with conventional meat production necessitate the exploration of cultured meat as an alternative protein source. This study aims to assess the psychological determinants and consumer segments of cultured meat among Turkish adults. Design/methodology/approach – The study was conducted using an online survey with 471 participants (66% male, mean age 28.4 ± 9.2 years), measuring awareness, willingness to try, risk–benefit evaluative orientation and attitudinal factors. An exploratory composite evaluative indicator, termed the risk-benefit evaluative index (RBEI) was constructed from seven concern questions, and standardized factor scores reflecting environmental–ethical (F1) and health–technology (F2) attitudes were calculated. Cluster analysis (k = 3) revealed three consumer segments: Supportive Optimists, Hesitant Pragmatists and Skeptical Resisters. Findings – While awareness of cultured meat was relatively high, willingness to try remained limited. Consumer acceptance was primarily associated with attitudinal dimensions, particularly environmental–ethical considerations and trust in health and technology, whereas demographic variables showed limited explanatory power. Segmentation analysis revealed three distinct consumer profiles with differing acceptance patterns. Research limitations/implications – The findings suggest that consumer acceptance is primarily shaped by multidimensional psychological evaluations, particularly environmental–ethical considerations and trust in health and technology. The study highlights a “high awareness–low acceptance” paradox and underscores the importance of communication strategies that address both perceived risks and benefits. By combining an exploratory composite evaluative indicator with factor-analytic attitudinal dimensions and consumer segmentation, this study provides a more comprehensive approach to understanding consumer acceptance and offers practical insights for promoting the adoption of cultured meat. Originality/value – This study provides one of the first comprehensive investigations of cultured meat acceptance among Turkish adults by integrating a risk–benefit evaluative index, attitudinal dimensions, and consumer segmentation within a single analytical framework. By combining an exploratory composite evaluative indicator (RBEI), factor analysis, and cluster analysis, the study identifies three distinct consumer segments and highlights the “high awareness–low acceptance” paradox in an emerging market context. The findings demonstrate that evaluative and psychological attitudes, particularly environmental–ethical considerations and trust in health and technology, are more influential than sociodemographic characteristics in shaping consumer acceptance, providing practical insights for communication strategies and policies promoting alternative protein adoption.

Some are more equal than others: workplace favoritism and hospital employees’ intent to quit

Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat; Banai, Moshe; Stefanidis, Abraham; Bekar, Fevziye; Roberts, Sara J.

Purpose – This study refines equity theory by explaining the mediating roles of job frustration and job dissatisfaction, as well as the moderating role of personal income in the relationship between discriminatory workplace favoritism and hospital employees’ intent to quit. Design/methodology/approach – The study consists of two samples. In the first sample, survey questionnaires were administered to 267 public hospital employees in Turkey. In the second sample, 1, 426 university healthcare students in Turkey answered four different scenarios that narrated school favoritism as well as students’ frustration, dissatisfaction and intent to quit. Structural equation modeling and ANOVA statistical analyses were conducted. Findings – Workplace favoritism positively affected employees’ intent to quit through the mediation of job frustration and job dissatisfaction. The mediating role of job frustration between workplace favoritism and intent to quit was stronger for high-income than for low-income employees and students. Practical implications – Favoring one employee may result in voluntary organizational exit by other employees, which is costly for the organization. Favoritism may encourage employees who were not previously prone to favoritism to seek favoritism. This may create a cycle that spreads favoritism further within the organization. Originality/value – This is the first study to investigate the role of income in the relationship between workplace favoritism and employees' intent to quit.

Abusive supervision: can workplace friendships exacerbate work alienation and intent to quit?

Özbek, Mehmet Ferhat; Stefanidis, Abraham; Banai, Moshe; Akar, Vural

Purpose – Drawing on conservation of resources, similarity-attraction and social comparison theories, this research aims to examine how supervisors’ abusive behaviour influences employees’ intent to quit by investigating the mediating role of work alienation and the moderating role of workplace friendship. Design/methodology/approach – In Study I, time-lagged survey data were collected from 241 academic institutions’ employees at two separate times to empirically test the study’s hypotheses. In Study II, four different scenario manipulations were administered to 220 academic institutions’ undergraduate and graduate students. Both studies were conducted in Türkiye. Findings – The results of the survey indicate a positive relationship between employee exposure to supervisors’ abusive behaviour and their intent to quit, with work alienation mediating this relationship, and workplace friendship partially boosting the intensity of the negative effect. Similar results were confirmed by the findings of the survey conducted across four scenario manipulations in the education sector. Research limitations/implications – Despite the two-sector, two-instrument study design used, this research may only partially capture and explain the relationships among the studied variables. To enhance the generalisability of their findings, future studies should investigate broader cultural and occupational contexts, using both longitudinal and mixed-method designs. Practical implications – Strong workplace friendships may intensify the negative impact of abusive supervision, increasing staff alienation and turnover intentions, signalling risks for team stability and retention. Economic implications of high-level employee turnover should be considered by managers. Originality/value – This study challenges the prevailing assumption that workplace or academic friendships are universally beneficial. By demonstrating that strong workplace friendships can exacerbate the negative effects of supervisors’ or instructors’ abusive behaviour, it introduces a more nuanced understanding of interpersonal dynamics in organisational and educational settings.

Prioritisation of Human Resource Strategies in the Digital Transformation Process of SMEs

Olubiyi, Timilehin Olasoji; Longe, Olumide Babatope; Susela Devi, K. Suppiah; Sinha, Mudita; Şimşek, Tuğçe; Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır; Olubiyi, TO; Longe, OB; Devi, KSS; Sinha, M

This chapter focuses on the importance of human resource (HR) management strategies in the digital business strategy for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With the increasing influence of digital transformation that alters organisational structures and implements new technologies, SMEs have no other choice but to evolve. However, due to the scarcity of resources, it becomes very important for SMEs to allocate its HR appropriately and effectively. To support decision-making on strategies like employee reskilling, recruitment of digital talent, leadership development, and promoting a digital culture, this chapter presents a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework. The prioritisation is crucial because not all the strategies can be executed at once, and SMEs should target the most effective ones in the long run, affordable, and relevant to their digital transformation agenda. This chapter illustrates methods for how SMEs can use the proposed prioritisation framework effectively. The hypothetical case study demonstrates the real challenges faced by SMEs during digital transformation and how MCDA assists leaders in selecting the most beneficial HR strategies. The case highlights the necessity of fitting strategies to organisational challenges to allow the customisation of training and leadership to align with business demands and maximise effectiveness while minimising costs. Upon use, this framework enables SMEs to comprehend and direct their digital transformation path more effectively.

Ecological effects of energy use and tourism-induced transport modes among coastline Mediterranean countries

Cakir, Mehmet Ali; Recepoğlu, Mürşit; Alola, Uju Violet; Alola, Andrew Adewale

Purpose: Motivated by the criticality of transportations system in tourism activities, this study further uncovers the effect of the main transportation modes arising from inbound tourism activities on the ecological footprint across the panel of selected coastline Mediterranean countries (CMC). Design/methodology/approach: The study considers a suitable econometric approach for the case of CMC with the dataset that covers the period 1998–2022. Findings: While the result reveals that all the modes of transportation except air deteriorate environmental sustainability by increasing ecological footprint in the long run, higher impact of environmental woe is associated with the land transportation. Similarly, the findings further show that economic expansion and conventional energy utilization in the examined panel and in each country spurs ecological footprint, thus worsening environmental quality. Meanwhile, for the country-specific observations, ecological footprint is (1) mitigated by tourism activities associated with air, water and land transports in Spain, (2) triggered by tourism activities associated with land transport in Croatia and (3) spurred by land transport in Italy. Originality/value: Policy inference from these results suggests the need to scale up the adoption of a low-emission transportation system in the countries.

Long distance relationship with workplace: Remote work and workplace spirituality

    Demirbağ, Kübra Şimşek

In this study, workplace spirituality is discussed in the context of remote work and the COVID-19 pandemic. First, the focus is on the changes in the meaning and function of employees in the organization during the evolutionary process of industrialization and management paradigms. Afterward, conceptual frameworks for spirituality and workplace spirituality are presented, and in the last section, academic studies that deal with workplace spirituality with distance or hybrid work arrangements are included. Early studies offer insights and recommendations on conceptualizing, developing, and managing workplace spirituality. They all emphasize that spirituality is necessary for remote work as a tool to overcome stress and mental health problems and increase employee well-being. Unfortunately, the remote work and workplace spirituality literature is relatively narrow and needs to be expanded.

Use of multi-objective examination model to sensitivity analysis for sustainability with three new practices

    Şimşek, Ahmet Bahadır

Purpose: The study has two main objectives. The first is to introduce three new examination policy practices: overbooked exam rooms, a substitute invigilator and an inheritance of the invigilation distribution. The second is the use of the examination model to determine the sustainability of the system against expected changes and to obtain long-term strategic information. This study aims to obtain managerial insights on the sustainability of the examination system with the newly introduced practices; it does not claim to propose solutions for large-scale problems. Design/methodology/approach: This study introduces a multi-objective mathematical model that contains a couple of constraints that belong to new practices. To check the sustainability of the system, this study gets help from sensitivity analysis, which informs the decision-maker about how the results will react to parameter changes. The authors perform all experiments in the Python/Gurobi modeling environment. Findings: The results demonstrate that the proposed practices are effective in the efficient use of resources. Also, this study shows that the examination model can be used as a stress test so that the weaknesses of the system can be identified and long-term strategic information can be obtained. Originality/value: The contribution of this study is twofold: the introduction of examination policy practices that are overbooked exam rooms, a substitute invigilator and an inheritance of the invigilation distribution. Overbooked exam rooms aim to use resources effectively, taking into account the possibility of temporarily increasing the exam room capacity. The substitute invigilator protects the examination process against sudden events. The inheritance of the invigilation distribution helps to ensure fairness; and the use of the examination model to obtain managerial insights on expectations. This allows testing the validity of existing policies and making necessary changes, taking into account possible changes in the system. In this respect, it differs from the studies in the literature and fills an important managerial gap.

Spirituality management in the workplace: New strategies and approaches

    Özsungur, Fahri; Bekar, Fevziye

In recent years, after realizing that personal beliefs and spiritual development are as important as mental strength, studies in the field of spirituality in the workplace have grown exponentially. The experts here provide conceptual frameworks and guidance by examining the subject in the light of current developments at multiple levels of analysis: individual, organizational, cultural, and in leadership. Furthermore, this book focuses on rapidly evolving business models: remote working, the cyber-workplace, social media, digitalization, etc - all accelerated by the COVID-19 epidemic. The concept of spirituality in the workplace can be harmful as well as beneficial. Employees who are spiritually attached to the workplace may ignore issues known as 'organizational deviation' (such as theft and corruption) by keeping the interests of the institution in the foreground. These 'dark' and 'invisible' aspects of spirituality in the workplace are also examined, with a special focus on identifying aspects of spirituality which can harm businesses. Spirituality in the workplace considers employees as a whole, in spirit, body, and mind.

Who said there is no place like home? Extending the link between quantitative job demands and life satisfaction: a moderated mediation model

    Şimşek Demirbağ, Kübra; Demirbağ, Orkun

Purpose: Based on the job demands and resources (JD-R) model and conservation of resources (COR) theory, this paper aims to develop and test a model that examines the moderating role of daily remote work hours and the mediating role of work–family conflict on the effects of excessive workload and time pressure on life satisfaction due to mandatory remote work arrangements. Design/methodology/approach: Hierarchical regression analysis was used to analyze data from 400 professionals working in the IT sector in Turkey. Scales developed by previous researchers were used to measure excessive workload, time pressure, work–family conflict and life satisfaction. While these four variables were measured with 19 statements, daily remote work hours were determined with a single question. The collected data were validated using confirmatory factor analysis, and the hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Furthermore, the reliability and validity of the data were confirmed. Finally, PROCESS was applied to examine moderated mediation. Findings: According to the analysis results obtained from the above sample data, daily remote work hours moderate the mediating role of work–family conflict in the relationships between (1) excessive workload and life satisfaction and (2) time pressure and life satisfaction. In other words, the findings show that job-related demands arising from workload, time pressure and remote work hours prevent employees from meeting their family obligations, thereby increasing work–family conflict and ultimately affecting life satisfaction. Practical implications: The study can help employers, managers, human resource professionals, policymakers and researchers increase employees' life satisfaction due to the changes in job demands experienced by employees in companies that have transitioned to remote work practices. It can provide new approaches for dealing with dissatisfaction arising from work-related conflicts in Turkey's changing environment. The results can greatly facilitate the Turkish companies' efforts to create more innovative work arrangements and make an outstanding contribution to improving employee performance in Turkey's transition to remote work practices by focusing on reducing workload, time pressure and long working hours and creating employee-centered remote work models. Originality/value: As per World Health Organization, the world will face frequent pandemic in the coming years, and thus organizations should be aware of remote work practices that will become widespread. This study provides a new perspective on the impact of employees' changing job demands on work–family conflict and life satisfaction during organizations' transition to new work arrangements in the face of the social crisis created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also contributes to closing the research gap between job demands, work–family conflict and life satisfaction.

Simultaneous quadrotor autopilot system and collective morphing system design

    Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to design a quadrotor with collective morphing using the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) optimization algorithm. Design/methodology/approach: Quadrotor design is made by using Solidworks drawing program and some mathematical performance relations. Modelling and simulation are performed in Matlab/Simulink program by using the state space model approaches with the parameters mostly taken from Solidworks. Proportional integral derivative (PID) approach is used as control technique. Morphing amount and the best PID coefficients are determined by using SPSA algorithm. Findings: By using SPSA algorithm, the amount of morphing and the best PID coefficients are determined, and the quadrotor longitudinal and lateral flights are made most stable via morphing. Research limitations/implications: It takes quite a long time to model the quadrotor in Solidworks and Matlab/Simulink with the state space model and using the SPSA algorithm. However, this situation is overcome with the proposed model. Practical implications: Optimization with SPSA is very useful in determining the amount of morphing and PID coefficients for quadrotors. Social implications: SPSA optimization method is useful in terms of cost, time and practicality. Originality/value: It is released to improve performance with morphing, to determine morphing rate with SPSA algorithm and to determine PID coefficients accordingly.
