Think political leader — think he or she? A multi-country test of a gender-fair language intervention to reduce gendered leadership stereotypes

Peters, Kim; Jeftić, Alma; Ballard, Timothy; Zhou, Steven; Steffens, Niklas K.; Inceoglu, Ilke; Ryan, Michelle K.; Bongiorno, Renata; Eagly, Alice; Arriaga, Patrícia

Women are greatly underrepresented in positions of political leadership around the world. In seeking to explain this underrepresentation, some researchers have pointed to people's tendencies to stereotype leaders as more similar to men than women as these tendencies can support the belief that women are unsuited to leadership. This project aimed to test whether a subtle linguistic intervention was able to ameliorate this gender bias in political leadership stereotypes across different languages and national contexts (country/region N = 42, language N = 30, sample N = 22,996). Specifically, this project examined whether gender-fair language (e.g., the use of paired pronouns ‘he or she’) can reduce the tendency for people to stereotype political leaders as more similar to men than women. To increase the rigor with which these stereotypes were measured, this project complemented the dominant ‘cheap talk’ measure of personal stereotype content with an incentivised community measure of this content. As expected, participants stereotyped political leaders as more similar to men than women; this pattern was stronger on the incentivised measure of community stereotypes. Unexpectedly, there was no evidence that paired pronouns reduced this bias (there was weak exploratory evidence that paired nouns increased participants' tendencies to stereotype political leaders as more similar to women). This project suggests that the ability of gender-fair language interventions to ameliorate gender bias in the political leadership domain may be limited.

A leakage-free analytics framework for subject-wise electrocardiogram-based sleep apnea detection using machine learning

    Melek, Negin

Sleep apnea is associated with impaired sleep quality and elevated cardiovascular risk, creating a need for reliable automated screening approaches. Although electrocardiogram (ECG)-based detection methods have shown promising results, reported performance values can be affected by evaluation strategies that allow information leakage between training and testing data. This study investigates ECG-based sleep apnea detection under strict subject-wise conditions using the PhysioNet Apnea-ECG database. Thirty-five annotated single-lead ECG recordings sampled at 100 Hz were divided into non-overlapping 60-s segments according to minute-wise apnea labels. Statistical ECG descriptors and time-domain heart rate variability features were extracted and evaluated using k-nearest neighbors (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF) classifiers. In addition, a lightweight one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) was trained directly on filtered ECG segments. Repeated holdout validation with subject-level train-test separation was adopted, and normalization parameters were estimated exclusively from training data in each repetition to prevent information leakage. Model performance was assessed using accuracy, balanced accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, F1-score, ROC-AUC, Cohen's kappa, and Golden Distance (GD). In the representative subject-wise evaluation, Random Forest achieved the most balanced performance, yielding the highest balanced accuracy (0.70) together with the lowest GD (0.56). Across the repeated subject-wise holdout experiments, SVM achieved the strongest average overall performance, producing the highest mean accuracy (0.72), balanced accuracy (0.69), ROC-AUC (0.77), and Cohen's kappa (0.39), and the lowest mean GD value (0.58). The lightweight 1D-CNN converged stably during training, but its performance on unseen subjects remained lower than that of the handcrafted feature-based models.

Institutional and relational underpinnings of vertical FDI spillovers in international buyer-supplier relationships: Insights from automotive suppliers

Nas, Tulay Ilhan; Sahin, Fatih; Golgeci, Ismail; Okan, Tarhan

This study takes a fresh approach to explore the mechanisms of foreign direct investment (FDI) spillovers in the context of emerging economy firms, specifically focusing on the Turkish automotive industry. Given emerging economy firms' inherent constraints in R&D and resources, FDI serves as a critical avenue for them to acquire technological and managerial knowledge. While previous literature has extensively analyzed spillovers from an economic perspective, our research introduces a neoinstitutional perspective in organizational sociology to understand how these spillovers manifest and influence productivity and innovation. Importantly, we examine the role of international buyer-supplier relationships, a key aspect in shaping spillover outcomes. In so doing, we draw on rich qualitative data from 7 Turkish direct and sub-suppliers of large automotive multinational enterprises (MNEs). Our findings underscore the significant influence of the institutional context and relational mechanisms on the effectiveness of FDI spillovers, revealing why anticipated positive effects may not always materialize. This study contributes to the existing literature by addressing the limitations of prior research and provides practical insights for policymakers in emerging economies, empowering them to leverage FDI for economic growth and organizational success.

    Kurtbeyoglu, Emine; Kaya, Aleyna

Objective: This study aimed to examine sustainable nutrition behaviors and attitudes toward physical activity among college students. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: College setting. Participants: The study included 303 college students (171 female, 132 male). Main Outcome Measure: Sustainable nutrition behaviors were assessed using the Behaviors Scale Towards Sustainable Nutrition, whereas beliefs and attitudes related to physical activity were measured using the Exercise Health Belief Model Scale. Anthropometric measurements, including body weight and waist circumference, were obtained by researchers. Analysis: Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses, as appropriate, and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted. Results: Sustainable nutrition behavior scale total scores were positively correlated with exercise Health Belief Model scores (r = 0.444, P < 0.001) and negatively correlated with body mass index (r = −0.142, P = 0.01) and waist circumference (r = −0.169, P = 0.003). After adjusting for sex, academic level, and income level, sustainable nutrition behaviors remained significantly associated with attitudes toward physical activity (β = 0.400, P < 0.001), explaining 22.6% of the variance (R² = 0.226). Conclusions and Implications: Students with more positive attitudes toward physical activity are more likely to engage in sustainable nutrition behaviors. Integrated health promotion strategies addressing both physical activity and sustainable nutrition may support healthier and more sustainable lifestyles among college students.

Immunosuppressant adherence levels in kidney transplant recipients measured by electronic monitoring devices: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Tuncer, Metin; Yalcinkaya, Turgay; Erol, Ahmet; Özalp, Cemal

Background: Kidney transplantation improves survival and quality of life in patients with end-stage renal disease; however, long-term graft success depends on adherence to immunosuppressive therapy. Objective: To quantify adherence levels among kidney transplant recipients using electronic monitoring devices. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched for studies published between 2000 and 2025. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted including studies that assessed adherence using electronic monitoring devices. Results: Seven studies with a total of 1025 kidney transplant recipients were included. The pooled mean adherence measured using electronic monitoring devices was 94.39%. In studies with monitoring durations of three months or longer, adherence decreased to 90.50%. Substantial heterogeneity was observed across studies. Conclusion: Although electronically measured adherence appears generally high, its decline over longer monitoring periods indicates that adherence is dynamic and may decrease over time. However, these estimates should be interpreted cautiously because electronic monitoring devices cannot confirm actual medication ingestion. Furthermore, intentionally non-adherent patients may be less likely to participate in or remain engaged with electronic monitoring studies and may therefore be underrepresented, potentially leading to an overestimation of true adherence. Even modest reductions in adherence may carry important clinical consequences, underscoring the need for sustained monitoring.

A structured educational model to improve the education of nurses: Case-based learning

    Aydın, Aydanur

Background: Case-based training is a crucial component of nursing education, providing students with opportunities to enhance clinical reasoning, critical thinking, and professional behavior. However, few studies integrate these constructs into measurable educational outcomes. Methods: This study aims to look at the influence of online care training, which is based on case studies in surgical illnesses nursing, on students' care behaviors and self-efficacy levels. Participants were randomly assigned to undergo case-based education or traditional instruction. One hundred and four undergraduate nursing students from one university were chosen to participate. The structure is logical, with causal relationships between claims and a clear order of information. The researcher used an online platform to collect data from students in both groups before and three months after training. The introduction features form comprised the caring behavior scale (CBS) and questions to assess nursing students' self-efficacy. Results: Before the training, there was no discernible difference in the levels of care exhibited by the participants or in their self-efficacy. Nevertheless, a notable alteration was observed in the CBS scores of the intervention group students following the training period. Their CBS and self-efficacy scores surpassed those of the control group. The results of the regression analysis indicated that age, gender, place of residence, and caring assessment scores did not exert a significant influence on the total score of the Caring Behavior Scale. Conclusion: The findings of the research indicated that structured case-based nursing education was an effective method for fostering the development of caring behaviors among students.

ÖZKAN, Esra; BAYRAK, Nurten Gülsüm; UZUN, Sevda

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate patients' experiences of perioperative stress before surgery using a phenomenological approach. Design: In the study, in which phenomenological research method was used, semi- structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 patients who were treated in the orthopedics clinic. Method: Criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to reach the sample group. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were recorded on a voice recorder after obtaining the necessary permissions and then transcribed. The data of the study were evaluated using thematic analysis. The study was conducted and reported according to the COREQ checklist. Results: In the analysis of the data, three main themes (situations experienced before the surgical operation, feelings and thoughts about the operating room, and perioperative stress and thoughts about healthcare professionals) and seven sub-themes (mental, physical, social, emotions, thoughts, positive thoughts and negative thoughts) were identified. Conclusion: It was found that patients experienced many psychosocial difficulties, especially fear and anxiety, in the preoperative period. It can be said that the difficulties experienced are related to both the surgical process and the operating room environment and the communication and interaction of healthcare professionals. In this context, determining the fear and anxiety levels of patients in the preoperative process, providing standardized comprehensive trainings to patients in order to prevent different practices related to the surgical process, organizing in-service trainings to strengthen the communication skills of healthcare professionals are very important for the healthy management of the process and providing holistic nursing care.

    Catal Reis, Hatice; Turk, Veysel

Early detection of plant diseases is critical to prevent disease spread and assist farmers. Thanks to their high discrimination ability, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based architectures can offer practical solutions in identifying different plant diseases. This study proposes a combined method to classify wheat plant diseases using the Integrated Deep Learning Framework (IDLF) and ensemble learning (EL) model. The proposed method uses pre-trained deep neural networks (ImageNet -based model (w/pre-training)). In addition, in the classification process, the performance of hybrid methods consisting of 13 deep learning architectures (DLA) trained from scratch, pre-trained DLA, deep, and-machine learning models were analyzed. Moreover, the use of hypercolumn, contrast stretching, and “Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE)” techniques are used to improve the image quality of the dataset. It is aimed to obtain a strong classification performance by combining these methods. In the experimental process, in the study using the original dataset, the RegNetY080 model trained from scratch had an accuracy value of 97.64%; in the study with the optimized dataset with CLAHE, an accuracy value of 98.33%; in the study performed with the CLAHE-improved dataset and transfer learning method, an accuracy value of 99.58% was obtained. An accuracy of 99.58% was achieved in the proposed hybrid study with the pre-trained RegNetY080 model and Random Forest (RF). The proposed method using IDLF and EL model provided 99.72% accuracy. When the proposed method was applied to the Wheat Leaf Dataset and Wheat Leaf Disease dataset, 97.56% accuracy was obtained for the Wheat Leaf Dataset and 99.43% for Wheat Leaf Disease. The results of this study can be helpful to experts and farmers in the detection of plant diseases.

Promoting sustainability in developing Countries: A Machine Learning-based approach to understanding the relationship between green investment and environmental degradation

Ahmad Khan, Khatib; Khalid Anser, Muhammad; Pala, Fahrettin; Barut, Abdulkadir; Wasif Zafar, Muhammad

The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of green investment on environmental degradation in developing countries using machine learning-based estimation combined with robustness tests of static and dynamic panel data modeling techniques. The scope of this study covers 30 developing countries for 2009–2019. This study introduces a new index of environmental degradation that uses the entropy method and includes green gas emissions and deforestation. The study addresses trade openness, the quadratic shape of economic growth, and urbanization in the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis (EKC) and the Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT), in addition to green investment. This study considers the kernel-based regularized least squares (KRLS) approach, the static panel technique Driscoll & Kraay standards error method, and a dynamic panel technique system generalized moment techniques. The empirical findings from the machine learning method show that green investment significantly reduces environmental degradation with a higher coefficient resulting from the static fixed effect estimation. The study also reveals that the main hypotheses, such as EKC and EMT, are confirmed by all estimation techniques. Based on the results, the study recommends that policymakers take pragmatic steps toward green investments and increase the financing of green energy initiatives to combat environmental degradation.

Measurement-based V2V propagation modeling in highway, suburban, and urban environments

Hasırcı Tuğcu, Zeynep; Kuzulugil, Kenan; Çavdar, İsmail Hakkı

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is one of the promising communication applications designed to optimize traffic conditions and has played a crucial role in the improvement of intelligent transportation technologies. Since there is still some uncertainty regarding generalized models that provide a more accurate representation of propagation environments, the existing literature emphasizes the need for additional experimental studies in various countries and propagation environments. This study aims to investigate the low-density and high-density characteristics of V2V channels for highway, suburban, and urban propagation environments in Türkiye. Thus, first, channel measurements were conducted for all propagation scenarios. Then, after the estimation of path loss parameters, the best-fitted path loss model was determined for each propagation scenario by comparing log-distance, two-ray, and log-ray models. It was observed that the log-ray model offered remarkably better performance than the two-ray model, especially in the majority of scenarios with two-ray characteristics. In addition, small-scale modeling and shadowing were also examined, and the outcomes were compared to relevant literature. Last, generalized path loss models were developed for six propagation scenarios and compared with previous studies. Providing additional experimental data on the impact of traffic and road environments that vary across countries on the V2V channel, this study not only validated and compared existing propagation models but also improved the representing accuracy and generalizability of the newly proposed propagation models. Here, all findings were presented in detail to support the motivation of the research.

Late Jurassic Paleotethyan oceanic slab break-off revealed by Sr-Nd-Hf isotopes of Na-rich adakitic granites from northwestern Turkey

Karsli, Orhan; Şengün, Fırat; Santos, José Francisco; Uysal, İbrahim; Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Aydin, Faruk; Kandemir, Raif

The Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of the Paleotethys Ocean is critical but a poorly known piece of the geological history of the Sakarya Zone, north Turkey. Here, we describe new integrated research of zircon U-Pb geochronology, bulk-rock major-trace element and Sr–Nd isotopes as well as Hf isotope of zircons from the granitic rocks of the Demirköy and Kızıldamlar plutons located in Bilecik area along the western Sakarya Zone, northwestern Turkey. Zircon U–Pb ages obtained by LA-ICP-MS reveal that the granitic magma intruded into the basement rocks during the Late Jurassic (ca. 162–157 Ma). The granites are tholeiitic and show slightly metaluminous to peraluminous geochemical affinities. The granite samples are adakitic, having relatively high Na2O (6.35–7.58 wt%) and Sr (172–580 ppm), and low K2O (0.39–1.13 wt%) and Y (3.2–5.3 ppm), and thus have high Sr/Y (70–250). The samples exhibit enrichment of light rare earth elements (REE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and depletion in heavy REE and the high field strength elements (HFSE; e.g., Nb, Ti, Ta). The samples possess low 87Sr/86Sr(t) values of 0.70313 to 0.70372, and εNd(t) of −0.66 to +9.24. Zircon grains exhibit positive εHf (t) values of 5.0 to 12.8 and depleted mantle model ages of Hf (TDM1 = 0.24 to 0.68 Ga). These geochemical features and Sr–Nd–Hf radiogenic isotope systematics reveal that the adakitic rocks were likely formed by low degree melting (<10%) of the eclogitic part of an oceanic slab and subsequent melt fractionation and crustal contamination. An ongoing subduction scenario cannot explain the formation of the investigated adakitic rocks. We suggest that the adakitic plutons were generated through slab break-off after the final closure of the Paleotethys Ocean throughout the Late Jurassic (ca. 162–157 Ma). Considering the previous data, the continental back-arc basin system, leading to the opening of Neotethys Ocean at the southern margin of the continent, has been put forward to decipher the Late Jurassic tectonic evolution of the Paleotethys Ocean and the western Sakarya Zone.

A multi-stage decision making model for determining a suitable innovation structure using an open innovation approach

Yildirim, Ercan; AR, Ilker Murat; Dabić, Marina; Baki, Birdogan; Peker, Iskender

This study seeks to form an end-to-end analysis of Open Innovation stages, developing a three-part consecutive multi-stage decision making model for a suitable innovation structure by linking the processes used to determine the innovation type (open, closed), the OI type (inbound, outbound, coupled), and the collaboration type (science-based, market-based). The decision-making criteria for the OI stage are determined by academic literature and finalized by Delphi technique. The criteria for relationships are determined through expert evaluation. The Fuzzy Analytic Network Process is applied in order to determine the weights and rankings. The most important criterion to consider when choosing the innovation type is open innovation awareness. For the OI type, the most important criterion is knowledge acquisition and, for collaboration, it is network building. This approach allows us to predict the potential risks or costs of the OI process and the possibility of decision errors can thus be reduced.

The impact of export dynamics on trade balance in emerging and developed countries: An evaluation with middle income trap perspective

    Akbas, Yusuf Ekrem; Sancar, Canan

In this study, it was analyzed whether the export dynamics affected net exports in fourteen emerging countries and eight developed countries between the years of 1995–2019. Export sophistication, export product diversification, export market diversification, export product concentration, export market concentration, and real effective exchange rate were used as the proxy of export dynamics. Panel data methods that take into account cross-section dependency and structural breaks were used for the analysis. As a result of the study, in developed countries, it was concluded that export sophistication, export product concentration, and export market diversification positively affected the net export, and the real effective exchange rate negatively affected the net export. For the emerging countries, it was concluded that export market concentration and real exchange rate negatively affected the net exports. Also, in emerging countries, it was found that export sophistication and export product diversification do not have any impact on net exports since export sophistication and export product diversification are not an adequately high level compared to developed countries for increasing the net export. The fact that in these countries the proportion of high-tech product exports are low in total exports and the product range in exports are not wide cause these indexes to be low. This situation poses a significant risk in terms of falling into the middle-income trap.

A robust data simulation technique to improve early detection performance of a classifier in control chart pattern recognition systems

    Ünlü, Ramazan

The quality control process is essential in maintaining the stability of production systems and proactively detecting abnormalities that may result in high mechanical and labor costs. In this study, a new data simulation strategy was devised to improve the early prediction performance (EPP) of an algorithm. Traditional control chart data simulation methods work based on creating abnormal patterns consisting of only abnormal signals. However, a classifier trained with data samples consisting of only abnormal data signals may fail to early detect abnormality in a real-time production line, in which abnormal signals is obscured by volume of normal signals. From this perspective, training a model by imitating real-world cases can improve the performance of an algorithm in terms of early detection of an abnormality. Normal and abnormal patterns were simulated by implementing a new approach called Mix Ratio Data Simulation (MRDS). The proposed methodology MRDS is compared with the customary data simulation method under the predefined scenarios in terms of EPP. The findings indicated that changing the way of simulating dataset increases the EEP of the machine-learning algorithm regardless of abnormality types and parameters.

Evolution of K-rich magmas derived from a net veined lithospheric mantle in an ongoing extensional setting: Geochronology and geochemistry of Eocene and Miocene volcanic rocks from Eastern Pontides (Turkey)

Yücel, Cem; Arslan, Mehmet; Temizel, İrfan; Abdioğlu Yazar, Emel; Ruffet, Gilles

The Eocene and Miocene volcanic rocks between the cities of Trabzon and Giresun in the Eastern Pontides (NE Turkey) erupted as mildly and moderately alkaline magmas ranging from silica-saturated to silica-undersaturated types. 40Ar-39Ar dating and petrochemical data reveal that the studied volcanic rocks are discriminated in two: Lutetian (Middle Eocene) mildly alkaline, (basaltic rocks: 45.31 ± 0.18 to 43.86 ± 0.19 Ma; trachytic rocks: 44.87 ± 0.22 to 41.32 ± 0.12 Ma), and Messinian (Late Miocene) moderately alkaline volcanic rocks (tephrytic rocks: 6.05 ± 0.06 and 5.65 ± 0.06 Ma). The trace and the rare earth element systematic, characterised by moderate light earth element (LREE)/heavy rare earth element (HREE) ratios in the Eocene basaltic and trachytic rocks, high LREE/HREE ratios in the Miocene tephrytic rocks, and different degrees of depletion in Nb, Ta, Ti coupled with high Th/Yb ratios, show that the parental magmas of the volcanic rocks were derived from mantle sources previously enriched by slab-derived fluids and subducted sediments. The Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic composition of the Eocene and Miocene volcanic rocks support the presence of subduction-modified subcontinental lithospheric mantle. During the magma ascent in the crust, parental magmas of both the Eocene and Miocene volcanic rocks were mostly affected by fractional crystallisation rather than assimilation coupled with fractional crystallisation and mixing. The silica-undersaturated character of the Miocene tephrytic rocks could be attributed to assimilation of carbonate rocks within shallow-level magma chambers. The parental magmas of the Eocene volcanic rocks resulted from a relatively high melting degree of a net veined mantle and surrounding peridotites in the spinel stability field due to an increase in temperature, resulting from asthenospheric upwelling related to the extension of lithosphere subsequent to delamination. The parental magmas for the Miocene volcanic rocks resulted from a relatively low melting degree of a net veined mantle domain previously modified by metasomatic melts derived from a garnet peridotite source after decompression due to extensional tectonics, combined with strike-slip movement at a regional scale related to ongoing delamination.

U–Pb zircon chronology and petrogenesis of Carboniferous plutons in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides, NE Turkey: Constraints for Paleozoic magmatism and geodynamic evolution

Kaygusuz, Abdullah; Arslan, Mehmet; Sipahi, Ferkan; Temizel, İrfan

Numerous intrusive rocks of varying ages and compositions exist in the Paleozoic to Tertiary periods in the Eastern Pontides. Carboniferous intrusive rocks are commonly observed in the southern part of the Eastern Pontides. The nature of the rocks in the northern part of the region has not been determined because of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary volcano-sedimentary units. Whole-rock geochemical, isotopic and geochronological data obtained from five different mapped granitoid bodies located in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides allow for the proper reconstruction of Carboniferous magmatism and the geodynamic evolution of the region. According to laser ablation ICP-MS U–Pb zircon dating, the Özdil, Soğuksu, Seslikaya, Kızılağaç and Şahmetlik plutons have similar 206Pb/238U vs. 207Pb/235U concordia ages of 340.7 ± 1.8 Ma and 323.1 ± 1.5 Ma, 348.4 ± 1.6 Ma, 335.4 ± 1.4 Ma, 337.2 ± 0.6 Ma and 334.5 ± 1.4 Ma, respectively. The aluminium saturation index (ASI) values of all of the samples from the plutons are between 1.0 and 1.32, which indicate peraluminous melt compositions. The plutons have SiO2 contents between 59 and 79 wt.% and show low- to high-K calc-alkaline characteristics. The plutons are enriched in large-ion lithophile and light rare earth elements and are depleted in high-field strength elements. Chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns are characterized by concave-upward shapes and pronounced negative Eu anomalies, with LaCN/YbCN = 1.9–46.8 and EuCN/Eu* = 0.19–1.76. The studied plutons show considerable variations in 87Sr/86Sr(i) (0.70255 to 0.71006) and εNd(i) values (− 4.8 to − 7.1), as well as Nd model ages (1.15 to 2.47 Ga). The Pb-isotopic ratios are 206Pb/204Pb = 17.11–18.60, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.58–15.64 and 208Pb/204Pb = 36.95–38.62. The crystallization temperatures of the melts range from 676 to 993 °C, as determined by zircon and apatite saturation thermometry. These data suggest that the Carboniferous granitic magmas were produced by the partial melting of meta-mafic to meta-felsic lower crustal source rocks, with minor contributions from the mantle. Collectively, these rocks represent a late stage of Hercynian magmatism in the northern part of the Eastern Pontides.
