Bozbeyoglu, Pinar; Altuner, Elif Esra
The growing global demand for energy and the environmental concerns associated with fossil fuels have accelerated the search for sustainable alternatives. Bio-based and biodegradable nanocomposites represent a new generation of materials that combine ecological compatibility with superior mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of bio-based polymer matrices (such as PLA, PHA, PBS, PEF, PVA, and natural polymers like cellulose, chitosan, and lignin) and their integration with nanofillers, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, TiO2, ZnO, and nanoclay. The synergistic effects of these hybrid structures are discussed in the context of clean energy technologies, such as solar cells, fuel cells, batteries, supercapacitors, and piezoelectric nanogenerators. In addition, the chapter highlights green synthesis routes, characterization methods, life cycle assessment (LCA), and industrial perspectives, emphasizing how nanocomposite design bridges performance enhancement with environmental sustainability.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Optimizing CPR performance: the role of body composition and ergonomic positioning
Aygun, Tayfun; Karaoglu, Olcay; Senturk, Hakan; Keskin, Arif; Yucel, Nurullah; Hekimoglu, Gulam
Background: Quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is associated with improved survival rates in prehospital arrest cases. Although CPR guidelines emphasize compression depth, rate, and recoil, individual anatomical and biomechanical factors influencing CPR performance remain underexplored. This study aims to determine the optimal CPR position by focusing on individual positional conditions and anthropometric data to improve CPR effectiveness and guide team member selection in emergency scenarios. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 123 paramedic associate degree students was conducted. Anthropometric measurements including upper extremity length, biceps circumference, and femur length were obtained. CPR performance was assessed using a feedback-capable mannequin, with data collected on compression depth, frequency, rhythm quality, and compression/decompression ratios. Positional parameters such as knee and hip angles, distance between knees, and distance from the mannequin were recorded and analyzed in relation to CPR outcomes. Results: Male participants demonstrated significantly higher CPR quality scores than females (65.09 ± 28.26 vs. 48.85 ± 27.11, p = 0.004). Positive correlations were found between BMI (r = 0.239, p = 0.008), upper extremity length (r = 0.364, p < 0.001), biceps circumference (r = 0.350, p < 0.001), and CPR quality metrics. A moderate inter-knee position (shoulder-width distance) provided superior compression depth and rhythm stability compared to narrow or wide positions (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Anthropometric and positional factors significantly influence CPR performance. Emergency team members with appropriate physical profiles (e.g., greater muscle mass, limb length, BMI) and adopting occupational ergonomic factors (e.g., moderate knee range, limited joint flexion) may improve CPR quality in the prehospital setting.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Turkish validation of the CompACT: assessing psychological flexibility among emergency aid and disaster management students
Çınar, Öznur; Oral, Vildan; Turan, Melikşah; Cengiz, Ekrem
Psychological flexibility is a central construct in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and an important protective factor for mental health, particularly among individuals expected to function effectively under high stress and uncertainty, such as those in emergency aid and disaster management. Despite its relevance for this population, no Turkish version of the Comprehensive Assessment of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Processes (CompACT) had been available. The present study aimed to perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the English version of CompACT into Turkish and to evaluate its psychometric properties in emergency aid and disaster management students. The study was conducted in two phases: translation and cross-cultural adaptation, followed by psychometric evaluation in a sample of 302 students. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.21 and AMOS v.22 through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, reliability analyses, test-retest analysis, and correlational validity testing. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed that the CompACT consisted of three factors (Openness to Experience, Behavioral Awareness, and Valued Action) explaining 75.848% of the total variance, comprising 20 items. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that the three-factor model provided the best fit to the data (χ²/df = 2.590, CFI = 0.963, TLI = 0.956, RMSEA = 0.073). The scale demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency (overall alpha = 0.843) and temporal stability (test-retest r > 0.70 across all subscales), and its expected negative associations with the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (r = −0.365) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (r = −0.403) supported its criterion-related validity.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ2Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation using the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative
Şahin, Yasin; Merdan, Mehmet; Açıkgöz, Pınar
Purpose – The aim of the paper titled “Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell–Whitehead–Segel (NWS) equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative” is to develop a new numerical method for solving the NWS equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative. This method involves the combination of the Caputo-Fabrizio Elzaki transformation and the q-homotopy analysis transformation method. The study aims to analyze the NWS equation that models the reaction-diffusion dynamics in biological and chemical systems. The convergence analysis of the proposed method is performed, and the obtained solutions are visualized with two- and three-dimensional graphics using the Maple software. The results show that the proposed method is more powerful and effective than the existing methods. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, a hybrid analytical-numerical method is developed to solve the NWS equation formulated using the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative. The method is a combination of: q-homotopy analysis method (q-HATM) and Shehu transformation technique (ST). By combining these two powerful methods, a solution approach that does not require linearization or complex calculations for nonlinear fractional partial differential equations, converges quickly and gives high accuracy results, is presented. The obtained solutions are tested for numerical accuracy and are supported graphically. Findings – In the article titled “Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell–Whitehead–Segel equation using the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative”, the authors propose a new hybrid method for solving the time-fractional NWS equation. This method is a combination of the q-HATM and the ST. The proposed q-HSATM provides an efficient and lightweight approach for solving nonlinear fractional partial differential equations without requiring linearization, discretization or complex polynomials. This hybrid technique obtains the approximate analytical solution of the NWS equation using the Caputo–Fabrizio derivative. The method provides fast convergence and high accuracy with less memory and processing power requirements. It also stands out as a reliable tool for modeling complex systems in applied sciences such as physics, biology and engineering. In conclusion, this study provides an effective and applicable method for solving nonlinear differential equations formulated with the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative, making a significant contribution to the field of fractional calculus. Originality/value – This section of the article titled “Development of a hybrid technique for solving the Newell-Whitehead-Segel equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative” can be summarized as follows: This study is one of the first hybrid q-HATM and ST-based methods developed to solve the NWS equation using the Caputo-Fabrizio fractional derivative operator. Its unique aspects: Unlike traditional methods, it provides models more suitable for physical systems by working with the Caputo-Fabrizio derivative, which includes the memory effect and whose kernel function is not exponential. The presented method presents a new and powerful analytical-numerical technique that can produce approximate solutions with high accuracy without requiring linearization or discretization. The developed technique is valuable not only theoretically but also with its applicability to reaction-diffusion systems in applied sciences.

- MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Explainable artificial intelligence for rock discontinuity detection from point cloud with ensemble methods
Günen, Mehmet Akif
This study presents a framework for the semi-automatic detection of rock discontinuities using a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud (PC). The process begins by selecting an appropriate neighborhood size, a critical step for feature extraction from the PC. The effects of different neighborhood sizes (k = 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100) have been evaluated to assess their impact on classification performance. After that, 17 geometric and spatial features were extracted from the PC. Next, ensemble methods, AdaBoost.M2, random forest, and decision tree, have been compared with Artificial Neural Networks to classify the main discontinuity sets. The McNemar test indicates that the classifiers are statistically significant. The random forest classifier consistently achieves the highest performance with an accuracy exceeding 95% when using a neighborhood size of k = 100, while recall, F-score, and Cohen's Kappa also demonstrate high success. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), an Explainable AI technique, has been used to evaluate feature importance and improve the explainability of black-box machine learning models in the context of rock discontinuity classification. The analysis reveals that features such as normal vectors, verticality, and Z-values have the greatest influence on identifying main discontinuity sets, while linearity, planarity, and eigenvalues contribute less, making the model more transparent and easier to understand. After classification, individual discontinuity sets were detected using a revised DBSCAN from the main discontinuity sets. Finally, the orientation parameters of the plane fitted to each discontinuity were derived from the plane parameters obtained using the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC). Two real-world datasets (obtained from SfM and LiDAR) and one synthetic dataset were used to validate the proposed method, which successfully identified rock discontinuities and their orientation parameters (dip angle/direction).

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1Towards Sustainable Environment in OECD Nations: The Moderator Role of Renewable Energy in Uncovering the Hidden Link Between Military Expenditure and Ecological Footprint
Ayaydın, Hasan; Ergün, Tolga; Ergün, Hilal Ok; Barut, Abdulkadir; Pilatin, Abdulmuttalip
This study examines the relationships among military spending, renewable energy (RNW), globalisation, economic growth, and ecological footprint in 35 OECD member countries, using data covering 1990–2022. Specifically, this study contributes to this discussion by presenting empirical evidence on the link between military expenditure and ecological footprint, while accounting for the moderating role of RNW in OECD countries. The analysis utilised Kao, Pedroni, and Westerlund cointegration tests, Driscoll-Kraay robust standard error tests, Dumitrescu-Hurlin causality tests, and FMOLS and DOLS techniques for robustness verification. Empirical results show that military spending in OECD countries increases the ecological footprint, leading to environmental degradation. Furthermore, the combined effect of military expenditure and RNW reduces the ecological footprint and contributes to environmental sustainability. The results contribute to the existing literature by underlining the role RNW plays in reducing the ecological footprint of military expenditures and by offering policy recommendations for environmental sustainability. From a managerial and policy perspective, the findings suggest that defense-related institutions and policymakers should integrate environmental sustainability criteria into military planning and procurement strategies. Increasing the use of renewable energy in military infrastructure, logistics, and defense technologies may significantly reduce the ecological footprint associated with military expenditure. Therefore, the transition toward renewable energy supported defense systems can serve as a strategic tool for aligning national security objectives with sustainable development goals.

Tek, Nilüfer Acar; Koçak, Tevfik; Yeşil, Süleyman; Sözen, Tevfik Sinan
Background: An accurate calculation of energy expenditure (REE) is necessary for estimating energy needs in malign prostate cancer. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the accuracy of the established novel equation for predicting REE in malign and benign prostate patients versus the accuracy of the previously used predictive equations based on REE measured by indirect calorimetry. Methods: The study was conducted as a cross-sectional case-control study and between December 2020 and May 2021 with 40 individuals over the age of 40 who applied to the Urology Clinic of Gazi University Faculty of Medicine. Subjects with 41 malign prostate and 42 benign prostate patients were both over the age of 40 (65.3 ± 6.30 years) and recruited for the study. Cosmed-FitMate GS Indirect Calorimetry with Canopyhood (Rome, Italy) was used to measure REE. A full body composition analysis and anthropometric measurements were taken. Clinical trial number: Not applicable. Results: Malign prostate group PSA Total and measured REE values (4.93 ± 5.44 ng/ml, 1722.9 ± 272.69 kcal/d, respectively) were statistically significantly higher than benign group (1.76 ± 0.73 ng/ml, 1670.5 ± 266.76 kcal/d, respectively) (p = 0.022). Malign prostate group (MPG) and benign prostate group (BPG) have the highest percentage of the accurate prediction value of Eq. 80.9% (novel equation MPG) and 64.2% (novel equation BPG). The bias of the equations varied from − 36.5% (Barcellos II Equation) to 19.2% (Mifflin-St. Jeor equation) for the malign prostate group and varied from − 41.1% (Barcellos II Equation) to 17.7% (Mifflin-St. Jeor equation) in the benign prostate group. The smallest root mean squared error (RMSE) values in the malign and benign prostate groups were novel equation MPG (149 kcal/d) and novel equation BPG (202 kcal/d). The new specific equation for malign prostate cancer: REE = 3192,258+ (208,326* body weight (WT)) - (20,285* height (HT)) - (187,549* fat free mass (FFM)) - (203,214* fat mass (FM)) + (4,194* prostate specific antigen total (PSAT)). The new specific equation for the benign prostate group is REE = 615,922+ (13,094*WT). Bland-Altman plots reveal an equally random distribution of novel equations in the malign and benign prostate groups. Conclusions: Previously established prediction equations for REE may be inconsistent. Utilising the PSAT parameter, we formulated novel energy prediction equations specific to prostate cancer. In any case, the novel predictive equations enable clinicians to estimate REE in people with malign and benign prostate groups with sufficient and most acceptable accuracy.

- MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ3Cash holdings in an emerging market technology sector: evidence from BIST firms within the trade-off and pecking order frameworks
Pala, Fahrettin; Karalı, Muhammet; Karabayır, Mehmet Emin; Henni, Mohamed Djafar; Barut, Abdulkadir
This study investigates the determinants of corporate cash holdings in technology firms listed on Borsa İstanbul (BIST) by integrating the Trade-off Theory and the Pecking Order Theory. Using annual panel data covering the period 2013–2023, the study examines how firm-specific characteristics and macroeconomic factors influence corporate liquidity decisions in an R&D-intensive sector. The empirical analysis is conducted using a random-effects panel model estimated with Driscoll–Kraay standard errors to account for heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, and cross-sectional dependence. The robustness of the findings is further assessed through firm fixed-effects, firm-and-year fixed-effects, one-year lagged specifications, and an interaction analysis. The results show that profitability is the most important determinant of corporate cash holdings, providing strong support for the Pecking Order Theory, whereas financial leverage exhibits a weak negative effect. In contrast, firm size, liquidity needs, R&D expenditures, dividend payments, GDP growth, and interest rates do not have statistically significant direct effects on cash holdings, while inflation exhibits weak evidence of a negative relationship. Moreover, the interaction analysis reveals that interest rates positively moderate the relationship between R&D expenditures and corporate cash holdings, indicating that innovation-oriented technology firms tend to retain larger cash reserves under tighter monetary conditions. The findings highlight that macroeconomic conditions influence corporate cash holdings not only directly but also through their interaction with firm-specific characteristics. The study contributes to the corporate finance literature by providing new evidence from an emerging market and offers practical implications for corporate managers and policymakers in designing effective corporate liquidity management strategies under changing monetary conditions.

NiTi alloys exhibit good properties, such as shape memory behavior, high corrosion resistant, having the closest elasticity modulus of a human bone and superior biocompatibility properties. However, the surface problems that arise during the use of this alloy limit the usage in the industry and health sector. In recent years, micro-arc oxidation method is used to improve the surface properties and increase the usage of these alloys. In this study, the TiO2 coatings were deposited on the NiTi substrates. The surface topography, morphology, crystallographic structure, and thickness of the coatings were determined using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion properties were investigated using potentiostat test unit in two different media such as NaCl solution and simulated body fluid. The results show that the coated samples have higher corrosion resistance than uncoated samples in the two different media.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ2Estimation of the temperature profiles of reinforced concrete cross sections exposed to standard fires by using artificial neural networks with different topologies
Albayrak, Selahattin; Burnaz, Oğuz
The thermal analysis in structural members can be extremely complex, especially for materials that retain moisture and have a low thermal conductivity. The simplest method of defining the temperature profile through the cross section is to use test data presented in tables or charts, which are published in codes or design guides. These tabulated data are generally based on standard fire conditions. Annex A of TS-EN1992-1-2 provides a series of calculated temperature profiles for concrete slabs or walls, beams, and columns. But these profiles are given for specific cross-section dimensions and standard fire resistance durations. The main purpose of this study is to estimate the temperature profiles of reinforced concrete beam and column cross sections by using artificial neural networks (ANN) with different topologies. When modeling ANN, it is benefited from multi-layer ANN, which uses supervised learning rule. During training and testing stage of ANN, the results obtained from the aforementioned temperature profiles are used. The temperatures values were read from the temperature profile charts according to standard fire durations, cross-sections height and widths, and x and y coordinates of the points by the reference point. By testing ANN with different topologies in conclusions, its usability, advantages, and disadvantages are evaluated.

Demirel, Maruf Hurşit; Gül, Abdulkadir; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Özgen, İnanç; Arslanoğlu, Hasan
BACKGROUND: This study investigates the antibacterial potential of pyrolysis-derived extracts from rosehip fruit (RF), orange peel (OP), corn silk (CS), spurge root (ER) and mullein leaf (ML) against antibiotic-resistant pathogens using two different culture media. Bioactive compounds were obtained via a PID-controlled pyrolysis system, and antibacterial activity was evaluated to clarify both extract efficacy and medium-dependent effects on bacterial growth and diffusion. RESULTS: Antibacterial activities were assessed using the agar well diffusion method, with ampicillin as a positive control, against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. A key novelty of this work is the comparative evaluation of extract performance on nutrient agar (NA) and Müller–Hinton agar (MHA). Among all samples, the ML extract exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity across all tested strains, producing inhibition zones of 18.85 mm against E. coli and 17.15 mm against E. faecalis on NA, compared with 13.05 mm and 13.60 mm on MHA, respectively. CS and ER extracts showed moderate antibacterial effects, with consistently higher inhibition zones on NA than on MHA. Ampicillin generated substantially larger inhibition zones on NA (33.35 mm for E. coli and 34.45 mm for P. aeruginosa) compared with MHA (13.80 and 27.70 mm, respectively), confirming the strong influence of culture medium composition on measurable antibacterial activity. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that both plant extracts and ampicillin exhibit higher antibacterial activity on NA than on MHA. The pronounced efficacy of the ML extract highlights pyrolysis-derived plant fractions as promising natural antimicrobials and emphasizes the critical importance of culture medium selection.

The study was conducted with 283 nurses in three state hospitals in northeastern Turkey using a purposive sampling method. Research data were collected by the researchers using a Demographic Form, the Compassion Fatigue Scale (CFS), and the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21). Descriptive statistics, normality assessment, one-way ANOVA, t -tests, Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analysis were performed using SPSS 26 software. Results A total of 283 nurses participated in the study. The mean CFS score was 83.97 ± 13.76, while the mean DASS-21 scores were 8.05 ± 4.10 for depression, 4.89 ± 2.97 for anxiety, and 9.22 ± 4.32 for stress. Correlation and regression analyses revealed a strong positive correlation between compassion fatigue and depression (r = 0.574, p < 0.001), a moderate positive correlation with anxiety (0.349, p < 0.001), and a strong positive correlation with stress (0.583, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that depression, stress, male gender, working as a nursing education specialist, and job dissatisfaction were variables significantly associated with compassion fatigue. Conclusion Based on these results, it is necessary to evaluate compassion fatigue in nurses in conjunction with psychological factors as well as individual and professional characteristics. Furthermore, it is important to support nurses' psychological health, develop strategies to address compassion fatigue, and increase individual resilience.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Depositional Setting of Eastern Sakarya Zone (NE Türkiye): Late Cretaceous–Paleogene Period Biostratigraphy, Sedimentology and Tectono-Sedimentary Basin Evolution
Köroğlu, Fatih
This study reconstructs the late Campanian–Thanetian tectonic and sedimentary evolution of the Eastern Sakarya Zone Basin (Türkiye) during the closure of the Neotethys Ocean, through the integration of tectonic, biostratigraphic and sedimentary data from three distinct tectonic regions: a northern back-arc basin, a central magmatic arc and a southern fore-arc basin. Analysis reveals a northwest-southeast trending basin with pronounced lateral variations: sediment thickness increases west-to-east, while facies transition from pelagic (north) to neritic (south) carbonate. The succession records a shift from late Campanian–Danian pelagic back-arc carbonates, through a Maastrichtian–early Danian hiatus, to late Maastrichtian–Danian hemipelagic-neritic carbonates, culminating in a Selandian–Thanetian neritic platform. The study proposes the first integrated facies model for the Eastern Sakarya Zone, linking its stratigraphic architecture to regional geodynamics. This establishes a new tectonically controlled carbonate sedimentation model for the Eastern Sakarya Zone Basin, critical for understanding basin evolution from pelagic to neritic carbonate systems in a closing ocean setting.

The synthesized YBFeNPs were investigated through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses. YBFeNPs showed higher total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and total antioxidant capacity compared to the original extract, suggesting that plant metabolites enhance NP bioactivity. Antioxidant capacity was further validated by DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, which demonstrated strong radical scavenging and reducing power. The antibacterial activity of YBFeNPs was assessed against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis, revealing concentration-dependent effects with the highest inhibition zone of 14.5 ± 0.4 mm for E. coli. The chemical composition of the YB-E extract was analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, identifying quinic acid, a polyol, and phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid (1.45 mg/g) and naringenin (0.02 mg/g). Additionally, the adsorption capacities of YBFeNPs were investigated against patulin and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), toxic compounds posing significant threats to food safety. The NPs demonstrated effective adsorption of both patulin and HMF, achieving maximum adsorption rates of 61.05% and 46.12%, respectively, at a concentration of 5.0 g/L after 240 min.
