Myosotis amoena Boiss. (Turkish name: Ho & scedil; boncukotu) is a perennial herbaceous plant that produces blue flowers during the spring. Phytochemicals, which are secondary metabolites distributed across plants, fungi, microorganisms, and even animal tissues, play crucial roles in health through their antioxidant and bioactive properties. Their antioxidant capacity largely arises from hydroxyl groups and aromatic ring structures that stabilize free radicals via electron delocalization. Enzyme inhibition is a therapeutic strategy in several diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), where acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitors are employed to manage symptoms. This study investigated the phytochemical composition (via LC-MS/MS), total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and AChE/BChE inhibitory effects of the ethanol extract of M. amoena using four in vitro methods. The CUPRAC assay demonstrated that M. amoena (1.070) exhibited higher antioxidant activity than Trolox (0.894), although its activity in FRAP, ABTS, and Fe3+ reduction assays was lower compared to standard antioxidants. The extract contained 53.03 mg GAE/g extract of total phenolics, with rosmarinic acid being the predominant compound (15.27 mg/g). Furthermore, the extract strongly inhibited AChE and BChE, with IC50 values of 3.9 and 19.8 mu g/mL, respectively. These findings highlight, for the first time, the significant bioactive potential of M. amoena as a natural source of antioxidants and cholinesterase inhibitors, supporting its prospective use in the prevention or management of neurodegenerative conditions.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2024The Relation between Corruption and Tax Revenues: An Assessment of Transitional economies
Setürk, Nazli Keyifli; Bayraktar, Yuksel; Özyilmaz, Ayfer
Corruption affects many economic, political, and social indicators directly and indirectly. One of the economic costs of corruption is a decrease in tax revenues. In societies where corruption is high, administrators taking bribes for excess revenue may reduce tax administration performance. Therefore, corruption and taxes are closely related to each other. This study analyzes the impact of corruption on different tax types in 6 selected transition economies (Estonia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Latvia and Slovak Republic) in the 1998-2021 and Bootstrap Panel Granger causality method. According to this study, there is unidirectional causality from personal income tax to corruption in Slovakia, from corporate tax and VAT to corruption in Poland, from VAT and SCT to corruption in Hungary, and from VAT to corruption in Latvia. Additionally, there is a bidirectional causal relationship from corruption to personal income tax in Poland and from corruption to corporate tax in the Czech Republic and Hungary, but there is no causal relationship between corruption and VAT and SCT. Personal income and corporate taxes, which require a strong relationship between tax administration and taxpayers, are more affected by corruption than taxes such as VAT and SCT.

- MakaleYalnız künye2014Scopus SJRQ440Ar-39Ar age, petrography and geochemistry of the Yoncayolu Metamorphic Rocks (NE Turkey): Subduction-related metamorphism under greenschist fades conditions
Gücer, Mehmet Ali; Aslan, Zafer
The Yoncayolu Metamorphic Rocks (YMR), exposed in the Sakarya zone (Erzincan, NE Turkey), consists mainly of greenschist rocks which are chlorite schists, muscovite-chlorite schists, metabasic rocks and lesser extent of pyhllites and calc-schists. All YMR are fine-grained, weakly foliated and often cut by quartz veins. The common mineral assemblage is chlorite+albite+epidote+quartz+/-clinozoisite+/-actinolite+/-opaques. Geochemically, protoliths of the YMR resemble calc-alkaline volcanic arc rocks. The YMR have high contents of large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and low contents of high field strength elements (HFSEs) similar to mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). (La/Lu)(CN) values are between 0.26 and 6.16. The REE patterns show slight or no Eu anomalies (Eu-CN/Eu* of 0.48 to 1.13), suggesting minor plagioglase fractionation. 40Ar-39Ar dating on plagioclases from the metabasic samples of the YMR gave ages of 100.8+/-3.4 Ma (Albian) and 94.1+/-3.3 Ma (Cenomanian), suggesting that metamorphism was related to the closure of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean. Metamorphism took place during subduction of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean between similar to 90-70 Ma. Chlorite geothermometry yielded a temperature of 320-350 degrees C and a pressure around 4 kbar. All these findings lend support for greenschist facies metamorphic conditions during the formation of the YMR.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1Post-Variscan autochthonous cover in the eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey: Evolution of the late Carboniferous back-arc ocean to the Triassic Karakaya Ocean
Dokuz, Abdurrahman; Alçiçek, Mehmet Cihat; Tunçdemir, Vahdet; Kandemir, Raif; Aydinçakir, Emre
The processes that caused removal of the upper Carboniferous to Permian sediments in the eastern Sakarya Zone, Turkey, are modeled by using of geochemical data and LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages from detrital zircons. A felsic provenance and passive margin setting during the deposition of the upper Carboniferous catalcesme sediments are inferred from the geochemistry of sandstones (SiO2 > 85 wt%). Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) values (75 - 81) indicate warm and humid climatic conditions and tectonic tranquility during deposition. Fifty-three (58%) concordant zircon grains produce a youngest age population in the range of 308.7 +/- 4.4 to 342.1 +/- 6.9 Ma, typical for the Variscan events. The burgundy color and upward-fining in clast size and bed thickness are the most prominent features of the concordantly overlying Hardisi Formation. Geochemistry (SiO2 = 66-81 wt%) and CIA values (58-65) of the clastic rocks point to a subduction-related tectonic setting and increasing rate of erosion in the source area. We highlight that the catalcesme sediments were deposited in a back-arc basin opened to the south of a continental ribbon separated from Gondwana. Approaching of the Paleotethyan mid-ocean ridge to the subduction zone was resulted in flattening in subducting slab, which in turn caused the back-arc basin to migrate into the interior parts of Gondwana and the former back-arc basin to evolve into a lacustrine setting. Increase in the elevation of source areas was resulted in an increase in the rate of physical erosion and trans-portation of burgundy Hardisi clastic sediments into the lacustrine basin.

Until 2016, two subspecies of Neurergus strauchii were identified; at this time, one more subspecies was described from Tunceli as N. s. munzurensis. However, this study mainly focused on morphological characters. We aim to test of Neurergus species, including N. s. munzurensis taxa by phylogenetic analysis, using partial base sequences of 12S rRNA and D-loop genes. For this purpose, we reconstructed Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood trees with other Neurergus samples. According to the results, phylogenetic tree topologies demonstrate that N. crocatus was separated from the N. strauchii-N. barani lineage and the N. strauchii group have shown monophyly. Also, N. s. munzurensis showed higher genetic distances with N. barani (1.1%) and N. s. strauchii (0.8%) while genetic distances were only determined as 0.5% within N. barani and N. s. strauchii. N. s. munzurensis was found to be a genetically distinct taxon, following its previous morphological description. This study obtained the first evidence on better explaining the taxonomic status of N. s. munzurensis.

Tas, Suleyman K.; Aydin, Abdurrahman; Yetkin, Cem; Albayrak, Akif; Kaygusuz, Mehmet A.
Background: Lenke type 5C scoliosis is treated surgically with long-segment (nonselective) or short-segment (selective) level fusion. For Lenke type 5C scoliosis, no standardized criteria exist for selecting proximal and distal fusion levels. Studies report that short-segment level fusion patients with correct patient selection have a direct effect on the result of a well-balanced spine. Purpose: To compare the midterm and long-term radiologic and clinical outcomes of short-segment (selective) vs long-segment (nonselective) fusion in Lenke type 5C scoliosis. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Patient sample: This retrospective study evaluated patients who underwent posterior instrumentation for Lenke type 5C adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) at our institution between 2005 and 2016. Outcome measure: Physiologic measures: radiological evaluations included coronal, sagittal, and spinopelvic balance assessments as well as shoulder balance parameters on X-ray. Functional measures: clinical evaluations were performed using the SF-36 and SRS-22(r) scores. Methods: Patients with Lenke type 5C scoliosis who underwent selective (group 1) or nonselective (group 2) instrumentation were retrospectively analyzed. Group 1 included 47 patients (42 females and five males) with a mean age of 16.1 +/- 2.4 year (range, 12-22), and group 2 included 58 patients (53 females and five males) with a mean age of 16.3 +/- 3.4 yr (range, 12-24; P > .05). Radiological evaluations included coronal, sagittal, and spinopelvic balance assessments, as well as shoulder balance parameters. Clinical evaluations were performed using SF-36 and SRS-22(r) scores; results were compared between the two groups. Results: Both groups exhibited similar results in terms of coronal, sagittal, and spinopelvic balance as well as shoulder balance in many data after surgery (P > .05). Clinical outcomes, assessed via SF-36 mental health and SRS-22(r) scores, did not show statistically significant differences between groups (P > .05), except fort the physical role difficulty domain of the SF-36, where the selective fusion group (77.1 +/- 31.6) showed significantly better scores than nonselective group (58.2 +/- 36.1). However, the mean surgical time and transfusion requirement were significantly lower in the selective fusion group. Conclusion: When appropriately applied, selective fusion achieves comparable radiologic and clinical outcomes to nonselective fusion, with the added advantages of shorter surgical time and lower transfusion requirements.

Altunisik, Ahmet Can; Okur, Fatih Yesevi; Genç, Ali Fuat; Günaydin, Murat; Adanur, Suleyman
Finite-element (FE) model updating is a very effective procedure for determining the uncertainty parameters in a structural model and minimize differences between experimentally and analytically identified dynamic characteristics. This procedure can be practiced with manual and global/local automatic model updating procedures. Automatic model updating is very popular because of its applicability to all kinds of engineering structures to minimize differences, and its damage localization and structural health monitoring. This paper considers a historical masonry bastion to obtain its dynamic characteristics numerically with the finite-element method and experimentally with ambient vibration tests (AVTs). Sensitivity analyses for the uncertainty parameters and manual and automated model updating to minimize differences are also performed. A castle bastion located in Trabzon, Turkey is selected as an application. The FE model of structure is developed in commercial software. The first three natural frequencies are obtained between 5 and 10Hz, and AVTs are performed under natural excitation using enhanced frequency domain decomposition (EFDD) and subspace structural identification (SSI) techniques. The first three natural frequencies are obtained between 4 and 7Hz. The comparison of analytically and experimentally identified dynamic characteristics shows a close agreement between mode shapes, but 26% difference in natural frequencies. To minimize the difference, the FE model of the bastion is updated using manual and global/local automated updating, changing its material properties of Young's modulus and material density. The maximum differences are reduced from 27 to 3% with manual updating, and to 0.02% with automated model updating.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2026Scopus SJRQ1An insight of oil protection theory: Survival, structural and metabolic adaptation of Salmonella enterica Enteritidis Phage Type 30 in three triglycerides

Oil protection theory posits that oil enhances microbial survival and heat resistance in low-moisture foods, yet the role of triglyceride composition remains poorly defined. This study investigates how Salmonella enterica Enteritidis PT 30 adapts during desiccation in peanut oil (mixed triglycerides, aw,25 degrees C = 0.30) and two representative components, namely, trilinolein and glyceryl trioleate. The lipid-specific structural and metabolic adaptations were analyzed through confocal microscopy and transcriptomics. S. Enteritidis exhibited the lowest persistence (3.43-log reduction over 180 days) and weakest heat resistance (2.5 h at 80 degrees C to achieve 3.5-log reduction) in peanut oil. The survival of S. Enteritidis in triglycerides could be correlated with its metabolic dormancy via suppression of ribosomal and oxidative phosphorylation pathways. Trilinolein enhanced S. Enteritidis' heat resistance (30 h at 80 degrees C for 3.5-log reduction) and moderate storage mortality (1.64-log reduction at 180 d), driven by stress hyperactivity. Glyceryl trioleate balanced heat tolerance (8 h) with optimal storage survival (1.19-log reduction), mediated by partial metabolic suppression. Peanut oil preserved S. Enteritidis transient motility in water-rich microenvironments, while pure triglycerides formed compact, dehydrated aggregates. Transcriptomics identified divergent strategies. Peanut oil induced dormancy at the expense of stress resilience, whereas homogeneous lipids imposed distinct constraints; that is, trilinolein amplified oxidative stress, and glyceryl trioleate intensified desiccation. These findings refine oil protection theory, demonstrating that lipid heterogeneity-not just low water activity-shapes microbial outcomes. The mixed components of peanut oil buffer stress but limit protective efficacy, while its purified constituents reveal how specific triglycerides modulate survival. This mechanistic understanding advances theoretical models of pathogen persistence in oily matrices and guides targeted strategies to mitigate risks in low-moisture oil-rich food systems.

Polat, Eray; Arici, Hasan Evrim; Arasli, Huseyin
There has been a growing interest in authentic leadership as a distinctive style of leadership and a dynamic research topic. In this direction, the aim of this study is multifaceted. First, we focus on providing a comprehensive overview of research on authentic leadership (AL), which has attracted substantial research interest in the last few years. Second, we outline the theoretical and nomological network of AL, highlighting antecedents, outcomes, moderators, and mediators. Third, we offer an elaborated future research agenda to enable advances in theory and empirics. We systematically reviewed 182 articles issued in the business management and psychology literature between 2005 and 2021. Interest in AL is growing, and 2020 is the golden year. Developed countries dominate the field. After a rigorous review, we offer a future research agenda with four key themes. The study highlights that AL is critical to the emergence and growth of valuable behaviours, attitudes, and performance at individual, team, and organisational levels. The study provides new research ideas and further conceptualization of AL. We also provide a comprehensive review of why managers should continue to practice AL, where the literature has been, and where it may be headed in the future.

İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ2Seismic Performance Assessment of Masonry Tile Domes through Nonlinear Finite-Element Analysis
Atamturktur, S.; Sevim, B.
This article discusses a combined analytical and experimental study on the nonlinear seismic performance of two Guastavino-style masonry domes located in the United States. The seismic performance of these masonry domes is simulated with nonlinear finite-element (FE) models. To support the assumptions and decisions established during the development of the FE models, the vibration response of the domes is measured on-site and systematically compared against the numerical model predictions. Linear FE models are developed that are in close agreement with the measured natural frequencies and in visual agreement with the measured mode shapes. Next, these linear models are extended into the nonlinear range by incorporating the Drucker-Prager damage criterion. Finally, nonlinear FE models are used to assess the performance of these two domes under seismic loadings obtained from the 1940 El Centro earthquake acceleration records. The predicted displacements and internal tensile stress levels are used to make inferences about the potential behavior of these two buildings under the selected earthquake load. - MakaleYalnız künye2013Scopus SJRQ3The Effect of Kefir Consumption on Human Immune System: A Cytokine Study
Adiloglu, Ali Kudret; Gönülates, Nurettin; Isler, Mehmet; Senol, Altug
The systemic effects of bioactive peptides which are produced by the fermentation of milk via the microorganisms found in kefir have been the subject of interest in recent years. Bioactive peptides activate innate immunity by stimulating macrophages, increasing phagocytosis, augmenting NO and cytokine production and boosting the lumen levels of IgG and 19A(+) B-lymphocytes. The aim of the present study was to determine the serum cytokine profiles of healthy volunteers after kefir consumption to evaluate helper T (TH) cell polarization and to bring out the effects on native and allergic immune responses. The study was designed as a prospective and self-controlled study. A total of 18 healthy volunteers (age range: 20-40 yrs, mean age: 35.5 +/- 7.38 yrs) from a university hospital staff were recruited to the study, with the approval of ethical board and informed consent. The body mass indices of all participants were between normal range (20.10-25.70 kg/m(2)). After two weeks of a diet free from fermented products, the participants consumed 200 mL kefir daily, for six weeks. Kefir product was prepared by using kefir starter culture (Danisco Biolacta Sp - 05223B 10001, Poland) which contains Lactobacillus spp., Leuconostoc spp., Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis and Streptococcus termophilus, an overnight incubation at 26 C, and consumed freshly. Fasting blood samples of subjects were collected just before kefir use (0th week), at the end of the 3rd and 6th weeks of kefir consumption, and three weeks after cessation of kefir usage (9th week). Serum TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-5, IL-8 and TGF-beta levels were measured by using commercial ELISA kits (BioSource, Belgium and Invitrogen, USA). Hemoglobin, serum creatinine and ALT levels of all subjects were also determined for follow-up. All volunteers completed the study period without any problem and declared no complaint. Hemoglobin, creatinine and ALT levels did not change with kefir consumption. Serum IL-8 levels were decreased at 3rd and 6th weeks (p<0.001) and were at low levels at 9th week (p=0.005) when compared with baseline levels (0th week). Serum IL-5 levels were increased at 3rd week (0th-3rd weeks; p=0.01) and decreased by a rebound effect at 9th (6th-9th week p=0.003). TNF-alpha levels were increased with kefir consumption (p=0.046) but the increase was insignificant in paired comparisons and the level was borderline between 0th and 6th weeks (p=0.013). IL-5 and TNF-alpha levels returned to their original levels (0th week) at 9th week. Levels of the other cytokines (IL-1 and TGF-beta) did not change significantly with kefir usage. These results indicated that kefir use increased polarization of the immune response towards TH, type and decreased TH, type response and accordingly allergic response. The decrease in IL-8 level due to kefir use, might control the inflammatory response by suppressing neutrophil chemotaxis and activation. On the other hand it was also concluded that increased IL-5 might stimulate secretory IgA at gastrointestinal mucosa leading to a more efficient immune response in the intestinal lumen.

Sahin, Huseyin; Kose, Oguz; Oktay, Tugrul
Purpose This study aims to optimize autonomous performance (i.e. both longitudinal and lateral) and endurance of the quadrotor type aerial vehicle simultaneously depending on the autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight. Design/methodology/approach Quadrotor design processes are critical to performance. Unmanned aerial vehicle durability is an important performance parameter. One of the factors affecting durability is the battery. Battery weight, energy capacity and discharge rate are important design parameters of the battery. In this study, proper autopilot gain coefficients and battery weight are obtained by using a stochastic optimization method named as simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). Because there is no direct correlation between battery weight and battery energy density, artificial neural network (ANN) is benefited to obtain battery energy density corresponding to resulted battery weight found from SPSA algorithm. By using the SPSA algorithm optimum performance index is obtained, then obtained data is used for longitudinal and lateral autonomous flight simulations. Findings With SPSA, the best proportional integrator and derivative (PID) coefficients and battery weight, energy efficiency and endurance were obtained in case of morphing. Research limitations/implications It takes a long time to find the most suitable battery values depending on quadrotor endurance. However, this situation can be overcome with the proposed SPSA. Practical implications It is very useful to determine quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method. Social implications Determining quadrotor endurance, PID coefficients and morphing rate using the optimization method provides advantages in terms of time, cost and practicality. Originality/value The proposed method improves quadrotor endurance. In addition, with the SPSA optimization method and ANN, the parameters required for endurance will be obtained faster and more securely. In addition, the energy density according to the battery weight also contributes to the clean environment and energy efficiency.

- BildiriAçık Erişim2015Nonlinear Motion Control of a Column Using a Coupled Gyroscope
Ünker, F.; Çuvalci, O.
In this paper, a system of the gyroscopes coupled via the massless torsional springs and the massless torsional dampers mounted on the tip mass of a column subjected to a vibrating base is considered. The coupled gyroscopes are assumed to have reverse angular speeds, and the rotations to eliminate the torques due to the springs and the dampers. Taking advantage of the angular momentum of the rotating gyroscope, gyrostabilizer systems are expected to become more widely actualized as they provide an effective means of motion control with several significant advantages for various structures. The non-linear motions of the gyro-column system and the equations of motion for the system are derived following energy (Lagrange) based approaches and examples provided. On the other hand, the effect of the angular velocities of the gyroscopes are studied, and it is shown that the angular velocity (spin velocity) of a gyroscope has a significant effect on the behavior of the dynamic motion. It is also shown how the dampers and springs due to the motion between the suporting gimbals influence the dynamic behavior of the column. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Tepe, Dilsat; Ulusahin, Mehmet; Kula, Sibel; Yilmaz, Gurdal
Objective: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a chronic inflammatory breast disease with a heterogeneous clinical presentation and uncertain optimal management. Increasing evidence suggests a role for Corynebacterium species, particularly Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii, in its pathogenesis. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, treatment strategies, and outcomes of granulomatous mastitis, with particular emphasis on cases associated with Corynebacterium species and the impact of antibiotic therapy. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included female patients with GM treated at a university hospital between January 2018 and January 2023. Patients were grouped according to Corynebacterium isolation. Clinical characteristics, microbiological findings, and treatment modalities-oral steroids, combined antibiotic-steroid therapy, antibiotics with intralesional steroids, and segmental mastectomy-were evaluated. The impact of lipophilic antibiotics (tetracyclines, linezolid, rifampin) combined with steroids was assessed. Recurrence rates and associated factors, including symptom duration, were analyzed. Results: A total of 165 patients were included in the study, of whom 25 tested positive and 140 negative. Corynebacterium spp. were detected in 15.15% of cases, with C. kroppenstedtii identified in 8.48%. Patients with Corynebacterium-associated GM had more extensive abscess formation and required more interventional procedures. Multimodal treatment strategies combining steroids, antibiotics, and surgery resulted in favorable outcomes. Lipophilic antibiotics combined with steroids showed a positive but statistically non-significant effect. Recurrence occurred in 16.4% of patients and was associated with longer symptom duration. Conclusion: Accurate microbiological identification is essential in GM, particularly in C. kroppenstedtii infections, to guide targeted antibiotic therapy and reduce recurrence. Tailored management strategies, including lipophilic antibiotics, may improve outcomes. Further studies are needed to define optimal treatment duration and the role of surgery in refrac-GM.
