RESONANT VIBRATIONS OF TWO-SPAN RAILWAY BRIDGES UNDER HIGH-SPEED TRAINS

Kahya, Volkan; Araz, Onur; Turan, Muhittin

In this study, resonant vibrations of two-span railway bridges subjected to high-speed trains (HSTs) are studied. The continuous beam is modelled by using Bernoulli-Euler beam theory, and the train is considered as a series of moving concentrated loads. The dynamic response is obtained analytically by using the assumed mode method. Effects of the speed parameter and the span to car length ratio on the response are examined. Numerical results show that the above mentioned parameters play very important role on the dynamic behavior of two-span bridges.

The correlation between tissue Helicobacter pylori severity and the increase in serum neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio in patients with active chronic gastritis

    Atayan, Yahya; Hacisalihoglu, Payam

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori are a microaerophile gram-negative bacteria and the most frequent factor of chronic gastritis. Recently, there has been an inclination to various non-invasive tests to determine the severity of H. pylori infection in the gastric tissue. The serum neutrophils/lymphocytes rate (NLR) is a simple, safe, non-invasive and active inflammation reagent. The purpose of this study is examining the correlation between the increase in the positivity/severity of H. pylori infection and the increase in the NLR. Material and method: 149 patients were included into the study by considering the Sydney criteria in accordance with H. pylori severity degrees in 3 groups; Mild (n=49), Moderate-Severe (n=67) and Severe (n=33). A Control Group was also formed (n=22) with negative H. pylori by three experienced pathologists. Result: It has been determined that the severity has increased among the groups with H. pylori positive as regard to the increase in serum NLR (r: 0.295, p: 0.017), there has been a significant correlation has been determined between the Control Group and the Moderate-Severe patients (p:0.014), the Severe patients (p:0.002). Conclusion: It is suggested that the serum NLR, which can be used in order to predict the severity of the H. pylori Infection in patients with chronic gastritis, can be a practical, inexpensive and non-invasive test.

Quantum interferometric protocol using spin-dependent displacements

Çelik, Necati; Özen, Songul Akbulut; Engin, Burhan

We propose a quantum interferometric protocol that leverages spin-dependent spatial displacements to enable high-precision parameter estimation beyond classical limits. By inducing a unitary coupling between a particle's spin degree of freedom and its momentum, the protocol generates entanglement between spin states and spatial positions, resulting in coherent spatial superpositions. Interferometric reconstruction of the resulting phase differences enables Heisenberg-limited sensitivity for parameters encoded in the spin Hamiltonian. As a concrete application, we demonstrate the protocol's effectiveness in magnetic field sensing, where the field is transduced into spatial interference fringes. Quantum Fisher information analysis confirms sub-shot-noise scaling, and the protocol's feasibility is discussed for physical platforms including ultracold atoms and nitrogen-vacancy centers. Our framework provides a versatile approach to quantum metrology with potential extensions to multiparameter sensing and gravitational wave detection.

An integrated process for rare earth elements recovery and silica production from Turkish bauxite-related ores

Uysal, Turan; Erüst, Ceren; Erdemoglu, Murat; Sis, Hikmet

The evaluation of bauxite-associated shales as a secondary source of rare earth elements (REEs) is strategically important for securing a sustainable supply of critical raw materials used in advanced technologies. In this study, shale ore associated with bauxite, unsuitable for aluminium production due to its high silica content, was investigated as a potential resource for valuable REEs. The effect of thermal activation on REE recovery was examined, and the potential use of the leach residue as a silica source was assessed. Based on acid leaching results, the optimum calcination temperature was identified as 700 degrees C. Under these conditions, high REE recoveries were achieved: 92.9% La, 89.9% Ce, 89.0% Pr, 88.7% Nd, and 73.0% Sm. After leaching, the residue was enriched in alumina and silica. To improve silica purity and recover remaining REEs and Al, a second-stage leaching process was applied. This resulted in a byproduct containing 55% SiO2 with a specific surface area of 48 m2 g-1, indicating its potential as a silica source. The results demonstrate that bauxite-associated shale can be sustainably valorised through intensive milling, calcination, and acid leaching, enabling efficient REE recovery and the production of a silica-rich byproduct. Süküroglu, Suleyman; Totik, Yapr; Süküroglu, Ebru Emine; Küçükosman, Ridvan

As material science is integrated into medical science as in other fields, the variety, development and usage areas of biomaterials increase. One of the biomaterials in this variety is NiTi alloys. This study was focused on the coating of TiO2 layer by using the method of Micro Ark Oxidation with the aim of the improvement of surface and mechanical properties of Shapedmemory and bio material NiTi alloy. Structural properties of the coatings were analysed by of SEM and XRD. In vitro ability was investigated by soaking the coated NiTi samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) at temperature 37 degrees C for various time periods. After soaking, Ni+2 release was applied to the media where coated and uncoated shape-memory NiTi samples are available, and its control was made by means of ICP-MS device. The results also show that Toxic and carcinogenic effects of Ni+2 release is significantly reduced by the TiO2 coating. Thus, it is observed that the properties that limit the use of NiTi alloys has been substantially fixed by MAO coating. It was found that the bioactive properties of the TiO2 coated NiTi substrate increased by MAO method and at the end of the 72 hour, there was no statistically any cytotoxicity in cell viability compared to the NiTi substrate.

    Ibn Kammūna's Understanding of Propositions*

Akbay, Yunus Emre; Evmes, Adem; Akyüz, Turgut

The subject of this article is to examine and analyze the understanding of propositions held by Ibn Kamm & umacr;na, who lived in the 13th century, from the perspective of the discipline of logic. Ibn Kamm & umacr;na is a profound thinker who left significant works in the fields of philosophy and logic by thoroughly examining the works of figures such as Ibn Maym & umacr;n, Ibn Sin & amacr;, al-Ghaz & amacr;li, Ab & umacr; al-Barak & amacr;t al-Baghd & amacr;di, Fakhr al-Din al-R & amacr;zi, and al-Suhrawardi. The primary aim of the article is to analyze in detail the manner in which Ibn Kamm & umacr;na approaches propositions, drawing upon the works he authored on matters of logic. The scope of the article is confined to al-Jad & imacr;d f & imacr;'l-hikma, Sharh al-us & umacr;l wa'l-jumal, and Sharh at-talw & imacr;h & amacr;t, which are among Ibn Kamm & umacr;na's works containing data on the subject of propositions, and within the context of these works, the definition of the proposition, categorical propositions, conditional propositions, modal propositions, the contradiction and conversion of propositions are comprehensively addressed. The literature review conducted revealed that the philosopher has been examined to a considerably limited extent in our country from the standpoint of logic, and this study is considered to make a significant contribution to remedying the aforementioned deficiency. A qualitative research methodology was adopted in the article, and techniques of analysis and comparison were employed. It is known that Ibn Kamm & umacr;na, unlike authors such as Aristotle, al-F & amacr;r & amacr;bi, and Ibn Sin & amacr;, did not compose an independent work on propositions. For this reason, approximately sixteen works that have survived to the present day were meticulously examined through an individual scanning method, passages related to the subject of propositions within the context of the three identified works were recorded, and the data obtained were systematically classified and analyzed. As a result, it has been demonstrated that Ibn Kamm & umacr;na's treatment of propositions draws substantially from the Peripatetic tradition through Ibn Sin & amacr;. Ibn Kamm & umacr;na shares a common view with Ibn Sin & amacr; on the matter of indefinite propositions and explicitly states that such propositions ought to be understood as particular. Furthermore, he addresses propositions holistically on the subject of modality without making a distinction between simple and composite; and emphasizes that there is no limitation with respect to the number of modal propositions and

Nutritive Value of Sunflower Silages Ensiled with Corn or Alfalfa at Different Rate

Tan, Mustafa; Yolcu, Halil; Dumlu Gul, Zeynep

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) having shorter growing season, better cold tolerant and more drought resistant is important alternative silage plant in highlands. But it has poor silage quality. To improve the quality of sunflower silage can be mixed an appropriate amount of corn (Zea mays L.) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). This research was carried out to evaluate quality characteristics of nine silage types: Sunflower, corn and alfalfa silages; plus their some mixtures silages (75% sunflower + 25% corn, 50% sunflower + 50% corn, 25% sunflower + 75% corn, 75% sunflower + 25% alfalfa, 50% sunflower + 50% alfalfa and 25% sunflower + 75% alfalfa); at two harvest stages: Beginning of flowering for sunflower and alfalfa and milk-dough stage for corn (early stage), and end of flowering stage for sunflower and alfalfa, and dough stage for corn (late stage). The experimental design was in a factorial arrangement of randomized complete block with replicated four times. Dry matter content (DM), crude protein content (CP), neutral detergent fiber content (NDF), acid detergent fiber content (ADF), silage pH and physical characteristics (PC) of silages were determined in this study. Mixing of alfalfa in NDF, ADF and CP and corn in DM, pH and PC had positively effect in sunflower silages. Late stage had positively affected DM, PC and pH for silage. Consequently, sunflower silages mixed with corn, with the condition of not being less than 50% at late stage, are recommended for farmers.

Let 1 <= p < infinity and omega be Beurling's weight function on R-d. In this article, we demonstrate some harmonic properties of Sobolev space W-k(p)(R-d) which consists of all functions on R-d whose weak derivatives up to and including order k belong to L-p( R-d). Also, we deal with some harmonic properties of intersection space A(k,omega)(p)(R-d) = L-omega(1)(R-d) boolean AND W-k(p)(R-d) by aid of Beurling algebra L-omega(1)(R-d) and Sobolev space W-k(p)(R-d). Cross-view Gait Recognition Based on Fine-Tuned Deep Networks

Yaprak, Busranur; Gedikli, Eyup; Bingöl, Ozkan; Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur

Gait recognition is a biometrics-based computer vision process used to identify people based on their walking styles. Compared to other types of biometrics, gait offers a more advantageous recognition process as it does not require high-resolution and close-range images and obtains without contact. But besides this, gait biometrics is highly affected by cross-view variation, and under this variation recognition performance decreases significantly. In this study, performance evaluations of fine-tuned VGG-16 and ResNet-50 deep CNN networks on the cross-view gait recognition problem are performed. For this purpose, Gait energy images (GEI) and Silhouettes obtained from CASIA-B, the most comprehensive data set in gait recognition, are given as input to the networks. The experimental results showed that the VGG-16 network achieved higher recognition rates in cross-view gait recognition.

Finite element model updating effects on nonlinear seismic response of arch dam-reservoir-foundation systems

Bayraktar, Alemdar; Sevim, Baris; Altunisik, Ahmet Can

This paper investigates the effects of finite element model updating on nonlinear seismic response of arch dam-reservoir-foundation systems. The highest arch dam in Turkey named Berke is selected for the numerical and experimental applications. Firstly, 3D finite element model of Berke Dam was constituted using an ANSYS software. In the analytical modeling, arch dam-reservoir-foundation interaction is represented by Lagrangian approach. Then ambient vibration tests were conducted to dam for four days, and experimental dynamic characteristics were estimated using an Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition technique. Experimental characteristics are compared with those of analytical obtained by the linear finite element analysis of the coupled system. Good agreement between mode shapes is observed during this comparison, though natural frequencies disagree by 15-20%. The linear finite element model of Berke Dam was updated by adjusting the material properties of the dam and foundation. By introducing the Drucker-Prager damage criterion, the updated linear finite element model was extended into an onlinear model. Nonlinear seismic behavior of Berke Dam was determined considering the acceleration record of Adana-Ceyhan, Turkey, earthquake in 1998 that occurred near the arch dam region. It is highlighted that the finite element model updating provides a significant influence on the nonlinear seismic response of arch dams. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Estimation of Elasticity Modulus of a Prototype Arch Dam Using Experimental Methods

Sevim, Baris; Altunisik, Ahmet Can; Bayraktar, Alemdar; Akköse, Mehmet; Adanur, Suleyman

Using experimental methods, this study presents the estimation of the dynamic and static ( secant) elasticity modules of a prototype arch dam. These experimental methods are ambient vibration tests, uniaxial compression tests, and ultrasonic velocity tests. Implementation of the methods on a prototypical arch dam-reservoir-foundation model of the dam, constructed under laboratory conditions, allows estimation of the elasticity modules. Random impact loads excite the arch dam during ambient vibration testing, which creates response signals for measurement. Commercially available software transfers the signals, and processing those signals allows estimation of the experimental natural frequencies of the arch dam. Analysis of a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) of the arch dam determines natural frequencies. The estimation of the elasticity modules of the arch dam arises from a comparison of the experimental and analytical frequencies. The uniaxial compression tests use several specimens of the fresh and hardened concrete of the prototype model, and those tests provide the compressive strengths and stress-strain relationships. The ultrasonic velocity tests apply several velocity measurements to the arch dam and foundation, resulting in estimation of the elasticity modulus from empirical equations related to concrete mix design, compressive strength, and velocity values. This study discusses the difficulties of the determination of the elasticity modulus and suggests that ambient vibration testing and the finite element method are useful for overcoming these difficulties. Improvement of Palmprint Coding Techniques with Feature Descriptors

    Bingöl, Ozkan; Ekinci, Murat

In recent years, biometric palmprint recognition system is one of the preferred research areas due to reach high accuracy even with the low resolution cameras. In recent studies conducted in this area, especially due to hygiene problems, images are taken in contactless and unrestricted environment. Despite a very successful improving methods have been developed for the images obtained in the restricted environment, shifts or projective distortions that occur in the palm pattern obtained from images taken in unconstrained environments negatively affect the success of this method. In this study, coding techniques that are commonly used palmprint recognition systems (Competitive Code, Ordinal Code, Derivative of Gaussian Filters Code) are strengthened with feature determinants (SIFT, SURF) and a new approach has been proposed. Scope of the study, a new data set consists of low-resolution images taken in unconstrained environments created and palmprint patterns obtained with the help of Active Appearance Model. First, performance rate of these coding techniques on the patterns were analyzed. Then, the advantages of 6 different approaches obtained by combining each feature determinant with each coding technique, is disclosed to the system.

Effect of Ambient Conditions on Monthly Performances of Three Different PV Arrays

Özden, Talat; Akinoglu, Bulent G.; Turan, Rasit

Solar PV cells may be mainly divided into two parts as crystalline and thin film. Mono-crystalline silicon (e.g. Mono-Si) and microcrystalline based amorphous silicon and other thin films (e.g. gc-Si/a-Si and CdTe thin films) are widely used PV cells in the arrays. The outdoor performances of these systems depend on some climatic parameters and conditions, and it is important to understand how the monthly efficiencies vary with these parameters. In the present study, the data obtained from three grid connected PV arrays of Mono Si, a-Si/p.c-Si and CdTe thin film that were operated for 41 months in Ankara-Turkey is analyzed. The results showed that Mono-Si an-ay performance depends on the 5 parameters of outdoor climatic conditions while a-Si/gc-Si and CdTe thin film arrays performances arc not significantly affected by the variation of the climatic parameters. The possible reasons are discussed in details.

Effects of feeding acidified milk replacer on the growth, health and behavioural characteristics of holstein Friesian calves

Yanar, Mete; Güler, Olcay; Bayram, Bahri; Metin, Jale

The objective of this study was to compare the performances of calves fed acidified milk replacer (AMR) or sweet (regular) milk replacer (SMR) at 8% of birth weight. Twenty- one calves (10 males, 11 females) were offered replacers reconstituted to 12% of dry matter over 5 weeks. In the group fed AMR, daily body weight gains of calves at the different stages of growth were comparable to those for calves fed SMR. In the preweaning period, calves offered AMR had similar dry matter intakes from starter, milk replacer and dry hay as well as total intake as those fed SMR. In the postweaning phase, total dry matter intakes of calves offered AMR and SMR were not statistically different. The overall feed efficiency ratios of AMR- fed calves were better (P < 0.05) than those of SMR- fed calves. Calf faecal consistency score (P < 0.05) and percent days with scours (P < 0.01) of calves offered AMR were significantly lower than those fed SMR for days 4 to 17. AMR-fed calves needed a longer time (P < 0.01) to consume the daily amount of replacer than SMR- fed calves. The calves fed AMR also took a significantly (P < 0.05) greater number of days to learn to drink milk replacer from an open pail without help than calves consuming SMR. In conclusion, it is suggested that the growth performance and feed efficiency characteristics of calves reared under the new feeding system with AMR were not adversely affected, but the incidence of scours of the young calves was dramatically reduced.

Preparing Forest Management Plans With Spatial Simulation Model

Kadiogullari, Ali Ihsan; Keles, Sedat; Baskent, Emin Zeki; Bingöl, Ozkan

This manuscript presents a simulation-based spatial forest management planning model developed for ecosystem-based multiple use forest planning approach. The general framework of the simulation model was firstly introduced. It was then implemented in a typical forest management planning unit. Four forest management planning scenarios including nonspatial and spatial characteristics were developed. These scenarios were compared in the context of different forest performance indicators (such as allowable cut, growing stock, net carbon sequestration, age-class distribution at the end of the simulation). When compared the simulation-based forest management planning scenarios, it was found that there were no significant changes in timber production levels among scenarios. On the other hand, spatial forest management scenarios controlled forest ecosystem structure and produced more applicable forest management plans.
