Bicuspid Aortic Valve in Adult Patients: Accompanying Cardiovascular Pathology and Variations

Akturk, Yeliz; Durmus, Irfan; Kavak, Rasime Pelin; Ozdemir, Meltem

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of aortic valve calcification, aortic dilatation, and coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) identified incidentally through coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and to compare epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness between BAV and tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five BAV patients aged 42-67 and 75 TAV patients aged 31-66 were included in the study. Aortic diameters were measured at the sinus of Valsalva, sinotubular junction, and ascending and descending aorta. Agatston calcium scores and CAD-Reporting and Data System were used to assess coronary artery calcification and atherosclerosis severity. EAT thickness was measured volumetrically, and its relationship with clinical and imaging parameters was evaluated. Results: In patients with BAV, the aortic diameters at the Valsalva sinus, sinotubular junction, and ascending aorta were larger compared to patients with TAV. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.001). Aortic valve calcification was present in 45.7% of BAV patients, with an average Agatston score of 349.06 +/- 413.22, while no calcification was detected in TAV patients. Although no significant difference in EAT thickness or CAD prevalence was observed between BAV and TAV groups, EAT thickness was positively correlated with aortic dilatation, coronary artery calcification, and aortic valve calcification. Conclusions: BAV patients exhibit distinct vascular and valvular characteristics, with aortic dilatation and aortic valve calcification being prominent. EAT may serve as a marker for these complications. Further prospective studies are needed to elucidate the pathophysiology of BAV and optimize early intervention strategies.

Spotify Users' Platform Experiences in the Context of Mutual Domestication

Tokgöz, Cemile; Önal, Aleyna; Üzer, Benian

Both critical algorithm studies and recent scholarship centered on domestication theory emphasize the influence digital platforms have in shaping user behavior while also pointing to the importance of user agency. In their 2019 study, Siles et al. adapted domestication theory to digital platforms through their research on Netflix and developed the concept of mutual domestication. The domestication approach focuses on the shaping effect between everyday life, media technologies, and cultural elements. This study adapts the mutual domestication approach to Spotify as a cultural platform and examines the relationship between user agency and platforms' shaping effect by addressing it as a cyclical process. The study discusses the relationship between algorithm and culture, the transformation of the domestication approach through digital technologies, and the functional as well as algorithmic differences between Netflix, which was examined in the adapted study, and Spotify; it then presents the user-centered research that was conducted. A qualitative research method was adopted, and semi-structured in-depth interviews were chosen as the data collection technique. The sample consists of twenty Spotify users. The data obtained from the interviews conducted with the participants were analyzed descriptively, and the findings were categorized under five themes. In constructing the themes, the study of Siles et al. (2019) was followed; the interview data were interpreted under the themes of personalization, integration, rituals, resistance, and conversion. The research findings show that a dynamic of mutual domestication operates between the platform and the user, and that this process has a much more comprehensive character when compared with the study conducted on Netflix. At the same time, the study reveals that participants evaluate the platform-user relationship through a third actor, the music industry, and that user agency is shaped to a large extent within the framework of the possibilities offered by the platform.

Automatic extraction of building boundaries from high resolution images with active contour segmentation

    Akbulut, Z.; Özdemir, S.; Acar, H.; Dihkan, M.; Karsli, F.

Building extraction from remotely sensed images plays an important role in many applications such as updating geographical information system, change detection, urban planning, disaster management and 3D building modeling. Automatic extraction of buildings from aerial images is not an easy task because of background complexity, lighting conditions and vegetation cover that reduces separability or visibility of buildings. As a result, automatic building extraction can be a complex process for computer vision and image processing techniques. In order to overcome this difficulty region-based active contour model was used to automatically detect the boundary of buildings for this study. To extract object boundaries, the model grows or shrinks the initial contour in the image. The main objective of this paper is making active contours algorithm perform without user interaction and to detect automatically initial contours to segment buildings with a software coded in Matlab. This task carried out by morphological operations, band ratio and thresholding methods. In this study, high resolution aerial images with 8 cm ground sampling distance (GSD) were used. Three separate test zones were selected with varying building level of detail on these images. Finally, it was assessed the accuracy of segmented buildings using Correctness, Completeness and Quality metrics by comparing the results images and manually digitized reference image. The proposed approach for building extraction from images was shown to be 98% accurate on buildings with simple geometry and homogeneous roof textures. However accuracy of extracted buildings with heterogeneous roof textures and lighting, and complex geometry is 89%. The results clearly show that automatically calculated initial contour positions work in accordance with the active contour algorithm and easily extraction of the buildings boundaries.

BroomyCell: An Introductory Educational Software for Neuroscience

Ozcan, Zubeyir; Yildirim, Omer; Kayikcioglu, Temel

Nerve cells are the basic building blocks of the nervous system. Therefore, the first step in neuroscience education is the introduction of nerve cells. However, both the complexity of nerve cells and the difficulty of their experimental examination make it difficult to test nerve cells practically. Therefore, simulation of nerve cells is found to be significantly effective. The difficulty of examining this type of cells experimentally shows its effect on neuroscience education. This brings to the fore the necessity of virtual laboratory environments designed for use in education. In this study, BroomyCell, which is designed by us as an introductory educational software in neuroscience education, was introduced. With this desktop application, it is aimed that potential neuroscientists learn their fields experimentally and without the need for a physical laboratory.

Investigation of parents with high-risk infant on participation in care, depression, quality of life, and anxiety according to the infant's severity of neurologic impact

    Sen, Muserref Ebru; Yakut, Hatice

Aim: The study aims to examine the psychological consequences such as anxiety levels, quality of life, depression, and participation in the care of parents with high-risk infants who have varying levels of neurological impact severity. Material and Methods: Forty high-risk infants and their mothers were included in the study. The infants were divided into three groups according to the Dubowitz Neurologic Assessment Scale. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), Quality of Life Short Form 36 (SF-36), and the NICU Care Participation Scale were administered. Results: There were significant differences in the mothers' anxiety and depression levels (p < 0.001) and many parameters of quality of life according to the severity of neurological impact. However, it was determined that the severity of the neurological impact did not affect the mothers' participation in care (p > 0.01). Discussion: Although our study revealed that parents' depression, anxiety, and quality of life levels changed according to the severity of neurological impairment in high-risk infants, care participation was not affected. The limited sample size and the inability to generalize the results to different cultural and socioeconomic groups are important limitations. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the medical condition of the newborn seriously affects the mental health of the parents.

Detecting and Classifying Dominant Crowd Movements through Particle Advection

    Akpulat, Murat; Ekinci, Murat

Today, trying to understand what kind of behaviour the crowd shows by studying the data from surveillance systems is an important topic for researchers of computer vision. The aim of this study make the motion data that is at pixel level and that is obtained by optical flow method a more meaningful data set with the particle advection method. In other words, the aim is to monitor the motion data by converting the 3D optical flow data set to a 2D data set. With this respect, evaluating how the crowd motion changes throughout the video by focusing only on the moments where there is motion can be carried out easily. At the end of the study, the success of the method is presented by testing how the image acts as a dominant movement.

Observing the Entropy of Crowd Movements

    Akpulat, Murat; Ekinci, Murat

Providing security and managing it as well as trying to understand how it behaves have become an important research topic in our day. The aim of this study is to calculate the entropy value of the crowd movement regionally and to track how it. changes in time. Because, excessive changes in the entropy value in time might point to abnormal behaviour in the region. The motion information obtained from the optical flow method from the image in parallel to the target was converted to motion orbits by particle advection. Motion orbits are mapped into by the Braid Theory and entropy value is calculated. Braid Theory is a mathematical method that is used to express entropy as a qualitative value by determining the interaction among the movement orbits. The results are tested according to the video sequence in the PETS2009 and UCF database and they show that this method is functional for observing how the entropy changes in time within the crowd movement.

Shape of Masses in Contrast Mammography Images and First Order Statistical Features Classification Based on

Kobya, Mehmet Emin; Ture, Hayati; Dogan, Ramazan Ozgur; Kayikcioglu, Temel; Teymur, Aykut; Kul, Sibel

Mammography is a valuable tool in the diagnosis and staging of primary breast cancer. Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) combines an iodinated contrast agent with traditional mammography to increase diagnostic accuracy, especially in women with more dense parenchymal background patterns. In this study, a Decision Support System (DSS) is proposed that classifies masses using radiomic features obtained from masks of benign and malignant masses in images obtained with the CEM technique. An open-access database containing 2006 CEM images was used in this study. Radiomic features obtained from these images were used to identify differences between benign and malignant masses. The DSS uses these features to classify masses using a decision tree algorithm. This study highlights the importance of the use of iodinated contrast agents to improve diagnostic accuracy in women with more dense parenchymal background patterns. Additionally, it emphasizes the potential benefits of a DSS, in combination with radiomic features, in the diagnosis and staging of breast cancer. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the use of radiomic features in mammography images obtained with the CEM technique is an effective way to classify benign and malignant masses. The use of this technology could be an important tool in the early diagnosis and accurate classification of breast cancer.

The effect of SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on anxiety levels and attitudes towards e-learning among sports sciences students

    Türker, Ustun; Bostanci, Ozgur

Background and Study Aim The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant changes in education and teaching processes, particularly affecting application-based disciplines such as sports science. This study aimed to examine the relationship between COVID-19-related anxiety and attitudes toward e-learning among sports sciences students. Material and Methods The study was conducted using a cross-sectional design with 2,479 students from 14 state universities in Turkey. Data were collected using the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) and the Test of E-Learning Related Attitudes Scale (TELRA), and responses were gathered through online surveys. Parametric statistical analyses (t-test, correlation) were performed using SPSS at a significance level of p<0.05. Results Anxiety associated with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to significant changes in the e-learning attitudes of sports sciences students. Students with higher levels of anxiety exhibited stronger tendencies toward technology use and perceived usefulness, whereas only limited differences were noted in satisfaction and motivation. Female students reported higher levels of symptoms and anxiety, while those who engaged in regular exercise demonstrated lower anxiety levels. Interestingly, within the high-anxiety group, students who did not regularly participate in exercise displayed more favorable e-learning attitudes. These findings suggest that anxiety may strengthen the inclination toward digital learning; however, this tendency does not always align with motivational commitment. Conclusions The e-learning attitudes of sports sciences students during the pandemic were influenced by factors such as technological competence, psychological state, gender, exercise habits, and the requirements of practical courses. The findings highlight the importance of designing hybrid and flexible learning models in times of crisis, in a manner that integrates psychological support with pedagogical needs.

The Impact of Image on Corporate Reputation: The Case Of Giresun Municipality

    Güllüpunar, Hasan; Tekmen, Tuba

The perception of a corporation by its environment is based on the presented conducts, produced service or product, and established communication with the target group in this process. This is the result of active communication between the source and the recipient. At the same time, there are marks of the past and the future in this perception. Both the total perception that has developed based on the interaction between the corporation and target groups for different reasons in the past, and the emotion that this interaction creates in relation to the future affect the outlook on the corporate outputs. Therefore, two types of perception can be defined by the environment of an institution. The first is a perception that is defined by the active communication process based on corporate behaviour, product, or service. The second is a perception that is an important factor in the background of the first perception and at the same time it is related to the past and the future which is affected from the first perception. These are defined in the literature as image and reputation. This study inquires into the effect of the citizens' impressions provided by the municipalities in terms of the president, staff or services on the general perception of the municipalities. In this context, a survey was conducted in Giresun city centre regarding Giresun Municipality. In the research, image factors related to municipality services and the power of representatives of Giresun Municipality based on the president and the staff were determined and then the effect of these factors on Giresun Municipality's general perception was examined. In the study, it was concluded that the image factors are important explanations of the general perception of the municipality and the biggest 'factor on the general perception is the mayor 'factor.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURE ON TOURISM IN THE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES

Artan, Seyfettin; Hayaloglu, Pinar; Demirel, Selim Koray

Institutional economics literature suggests that inclusive institutions encourage economic growth by increasing efficiency in many sectors of the economy. Institutional structure also has effects on the tourism sector due to the confidential environment and incentives it brings. In this context, when studies on determinants of tourism are examined, it is remarkable that there are a number of studies on economic and social factors, but that there are limited studies about institutional determinants of tourism. This study investigates the causal relationships between institutional factors and tourism sector in nine Mediterranean coastal countries also including Turkey for the period of 1995-2015 by using Konya (2006) panel causality analysis. The results of the study using variables of corruption and democratic accountability as indicative of institutional structure reveal causal relations between tourism expenditures and institutional factors.

Wear Behavior of Dental Restorative Materials

Sen, Sadri; Zamanlou, Hamid; Karabudak, Filiz; Süküroglu, Ebru Emine

Gradual wear of opposing teeth is a normal phenomenon in human dentition. There is a need for quality dental restorative materials to repair or replace natural teeth to ensure a higher quality of life through dental health. One of the main physiological mechanism that exists in dental materials during normal muscle function is called abrasion. There are two types of that in teeth which are common; Two-body and three-body. If the teeth are contacted directly, it is referred to as two-body abrasion. However, when there is abrasive slurry-like food between the teeth, this abrasive is called to be three-body abrasive. Several types of materials are available in current dentistry for teeth restoration and replacement, and new materials are being promoted every year. Dental specialists need to understand the wear mechanisms of these new types of dental restorative materials, alone or in combination with either enamel or other dental restorative material. The present study evaluates the abrasive resistance of three restorative materials groups: direct composites, indirect composites, and ceramics. To define the resistance of the wear, the authors then perform a micro-wear test on chosen materials. The results show that the wear mechanism is abrasive due to its low hardness compared to zirconia ball. The wear path in the nanohybrid (Grandio (R), 87s% w/w (71s% volume) inorganic nanohybrid filler, BisGMA, UDMA, TEGDMA) sample was smooth and without particles. In this study wear FEM analysis calculated for all models and the answers compared with experimental data.
