Background/aim: To determine the levels of adipokines (leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and visfatin) and the indices of insulin sensitivity/ resistance, and to examine the relationship among them in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS).; Materials and methods: The study groups included 45 subjects with MetS (31 women/14 men), and 45 sex- and age-matched non-MetS healthy volunteers (31 women/14 men). The levels of adipokines were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.; Results: The levels of leptin and visfatin were significantly higher in the MetS than in the non-MetS subjects (P < 0.01). There was no difference in adiponectin levels in subjects with and without MetS (P = 0.052). Similarly, resistin did not show any statistically significant difference. A statistically significant positive correlation of leptin with insulin levels was observed, while negative correlations of visfatin levels with age, and resistin levels with the ratio of adiponectin to leptin, were found in the MetS (P < 0.05). The combination of adipokines, insulin resistance-sensitivity parameters, and MetS criteria parameters gave more signifcant differences than a single parameter.; Conclusion: Since the parameters mentioned above might affect, interact with, and/or interfere with each other, the combinations of these parameters might give more reliable results to evaluate the insulin resistance/sensitivity in MetS patients.

Sequence Variant in the LPIN1 gene in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Kural, Birgul Vanizor; Deger, Orhan; Erem, Cihangir; Yücesan, Fulya Balaban; Barlak, Yasam; Turan, Ibrahim; Aliyazicioglu, Rezzan

Objective: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex disease characterized by insulin resistance, abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL-cholesterol level. The aim of the study was to evaluate the sequence variations in the LPIN1 gene in MetS. This gene codes lipin-1 protein which functions as Mg-dependent phosphatidic phosphatase enzyme and transcriptional coactivator. Material and Methods: The study groups included 73 MetS (19 M/54 F) and 56 non-MetS (16 M/40 F). Sequence variation in exons 2, 4, 5 and 14 of the LPIN1 gene were investigated by DNA sequencing method. Results: c.696 G>C variant (p.S232S) in exon 5 was observed in only one women with MetS. But this variation is not important because of coding same amino acid. Conclusion: Any important sequence variant was not detected in exons 2, 4, 5 and 14 in the LPIN1 gene in MetS.

Metabolic syndrome in collection and disposal of solid waste sector

Eker, Hasan Huseyin; Bayraktarli, Recep Yilmaz; Issever, Halim; Ulas, Tumer; Erelel, Mustafa; Eser, Ali; Ozdilli, Kuraat; Ozder, Aclan

Objectives: This study aims to assess the frequency and factors relevant to metabolic syndrome in workers employed in the collection and disposal of solid waste sector. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the major solid waste collecting and disposal company named ISTAC AS (Istanbul Environmental Protection and Waste Processing Corporation) in Istanbul, Turkey. All 715 male employees of the company were included in the study without sampling. The study was completed with 619 subjects. Since it was a small group, female workers were not taken into ac-count in the study. Metabolic syndrome frequency was investigated according to the NCEP-ATP III criteria including the levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, waist perimeter, HDL, triglyceride, fasting blood glucose values. Results: Metabolic syndrome was present in 40.9% of participating employees. Metabolic syndrome was more common in those working in the excavation field (54.0%), such as caterpillar operators (56.5%), and less common in employees working in administrative offices, such as office staff or managers, who were under 35 years old and who had been working for less than 10 years (p < 0.05). Employees working in work stations other than administrative offices had a 2.60 times higher risk compared to those working in administrative offices. Conclusions: Metabolic syndrome may be related to work sta-tion, job, age and period worked by the subjects.
