Who Is at Risk? Analyzing the Drivers of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in Turkey

Türkkan, Tuğba; Hatipoğlu, Ertuğrul; Yücel, İbrahim; Kulakaç, Nurşen; Sipahi, Ferkan; Zeybek, Halil İbrahim

Violence against women represents a severe violation of human rights and has become a pervasive issue globally. This study aims to examine the risk factors associated with violence against women in a developing country context, specifically Turkey. This study adopted a cross-sectional research design. The study sample comprised 391 women living in a northeastern Turkish province, selected using a stratified sampling method. Participants’ ages ranged from 20 to 60 years, with a mean age of 40.83 years. The findings revealed a positive correlation between the age of both women and their spouses and the likelihood of experiencing physical and verbal violence. Factors such as the number of marriages, duration of marriage, number of children, and spousal infidelity emerged as significant risks for victimization. Additionally, an early age at first marriage, the presence of mental illness, and addiction problems were identified as critical risk factors for women’s victimization in violence. Education and employment were protective factors against violence, with higher educational levels and employment status for women and their spouses reducing the risk. Regression analyses further identified women’s education level, prior exposure to domestic violence, age at first marriage, and the addiction status of the spouse as significant predictors of violence against women. The findings provide valuable insights into the etiology of violence against women. In conclusion, the study has the potential to guide the development of more targeted and effective strategies to combat this pervasive public health and human rights issue.

Digital cultivation of violence: a mixed-methods analysis of content and sentiment in YouTube comments on popular Turkish TV series

Olgun, Oğuzhan; Demirel, Çağatay; Demirel, Uğur

This study examines the contemporary manifestations of George Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory within the Turkish media landscape by analyzing the relationship between televised representations of violence and digital audience reception. Adopting a mixed-methods research design, the study first conducts a structured qualitative content analysis of 15 selected episodes from three popular Turkish TV series (Camdaki Kız, Sadakatsiz, and Son Yaz) to categorize and quantify various forms of violence. Subsequently, a large-scale computational emotion analysis is performed on 74,478 YouTube comments associated with these episodes using two transformer-based Turkish language models (KUBI and TREMO). The content analysis findings reveal a high prevalence of emotional and psychological violence (61.3%) across all series, followed by physical violence (29.9%), suggesting that mediated harm is increasingly represented through relational and verbal conflict. The computational analysis suggests that these narrative patterns are associated with a high-arousal and largely negative emotional environment in audience discourse, especially around anger and sadness. Notably, while traditional cultivation research emphasizes fear as a primary outcome (Mean World Syndrome), this study finds that digital reception is characterized more by outward-facing anger and moral disgust than by internalized apprehension. The results are consistent with the interpretation that the “seeds” of television cultivation continue to circulate within networked media ecologies, where televised conflict is publicly interpreted and emotionally negotiated through collective digital interaction. By bridging the gap between screen reality and platformed discourse, the research provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the long-term affective impact of Turkish television narratives in the digital age.

Psychosocial dimensions of being a child in women’s shelters: A phenomenological study on the experiences of battered women – A case study from Türkiye’s Northern Region

    Uzun, Sevda; Emirza, Elif Güzide

Background: Violence against women has numerous devastating effects. Exposure to violence not only impacts women but also affects their children both physically and psychosocially. Aims: The study aimed to evaluate the psychosocial problems of children living with their mothers in women’s shelters from the mothers’ perspective with a phenomenological approach. Methods: Utilizing the phenomenological research method, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 individuals in a women’s shelter in a province in northern Türkiye. The criterion sampling method, a purposive sampling technique, was employed to select participants. Interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were audio recorded and then transcribed, and thematic analysis was applied to analyze the data. The study adhered to the COREQ checklist for reporting. Results: The data analysis revealed four main categories (effects of violence on the mother, actions taken to protect children from violence, effects of violence and staying in a shelter on the child, and psychosocial needs for the protection of the child’s mental health in the shelter) and 10 sub-themes (psychological effects, physical effects, social effects, domestic actions, organizational actions, psychological effects, physical effects, social effects, support system, and coping). Conclusion: The study concluded that violence significantly impacted the mental, physical, and social well-being of both women and children, posing challenges to their ability to cope with the aftermath. Women exerted considerable effort in protecting their children from violence, and they needed psychosocial support to ensure the well-being of their children’s mental health during their stay in shelters.

The effect of psychotherapeutic interventions on posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, depression and self-esteem in women exposed to violence: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda

This study aimed to reveal the level of effect of psychotherapeutic interventions on post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, depression, and self-esteem in women who had been exposed to violence. For this systematic review and meta-analysis study, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and YÖK Thesis Center databases were searched without any year limitation in August-December 2022, and 28 studies were included. The data were synthesized using meta-analysis and narrative methods. This systematic review and meta-analysis found that psychotherapeutic interventions for women exposed to violence were effective on post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in individuals (SMD: -0,590, %95 CI: -0,893- 0.196; Z= -2,937, p = 0.003, I2= %93,59). Psychotherapeutic interventions had a significant effect on women’s depression levels in favor of the intervention group, and there was high heterogeneity between the studies (SMD: -0,475, %95 CI: -0,838- 0.113; Z= -2,569, p = 0.010, I2= %90,68). Subgroup analyses showed that cognitive behavioral therapy was effective in the treatment of intimate partner violence. It was also found that psychotherapeutic interventions did not affect women’s self-esteem levels. Psychotherapeutic therapies for women who have experienced violence have a favorable impact on them and improve their mental health.

Objectives. This study aims to examine the frequency of exposure of health care providers to aggression and violence at work, and the effective factors thereon, as well as the effects of violence on health care providers. Materials and Methods. This cross-sectional type study has been conducted in Istanbul Training and Research Hospital (IEAH) (219) and Bayrampasa State Hospital (BDH) (64) in April 2010. The questionnaire prepared by researchers has been filled in through face-to-face meetings with a total of 283 health care providers, who accepted to take part in the study. The resulting data have been assessed and evaluated through SPSS 11.5 package program. Results. 66.8% of the respondents reported that they had been exposed to violence and aggression during the recent one year, the most frequent type thereof being verbal violence (86.8%). 90.2% of the health care providers exposed to violence at work stated that the applicable current laws do not protect the staff against violence, and 88.3% thereof stated that their institution have not supported them upon an act of violence. A statistically significant difference in the frequency of exposure to violence has been detected between age, seniority at work, place of exposure to violence, and profession of the health care staff (p<0.05). Approximately half of the health care providers opine that their behavior towards patients has been negatively affected from violence. It is noted that such negative behavior change is even higher in females, staff with a frequency of violence > 5, assistants, and staff who believe that security at work is at risk in their institution (p<0.05). Conclusions. Around 1/3rd of the health care providers have reported that they have been exposed to violence at least once during the recent one year, and half of those exposed to violence have stated that their behavior towards patients has been negatively affected therefrom.
