- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2Investigation of the Effects of Filling Speed, Casting Temperature and Metallurgical Quality on Fluidity of Lamellar Graphite Cast Iron at Different Section Thicknesses
Köse, Sami; Çolak, Murat; Şüküroğlu, Ebru Emine
In this study, the fluidity properties of the alloy were investigated at different casting temperatures, different section thicknesses, and varying casting parameters of lamellar graphite cast iron materials. To achieve our goal, we utilized sand molds that were created with specific parameters including pouring temperature, metallurgical quality, section thickness, and fluidity test model. These molds were used for casting. Thus, the effect of fluidity properties in changing casting conditions and liquid metal advance distances at determined section thicknesses was investigated. Modeling was carried out with FlowCast casting simulation software by determining the liquid metal advance distance depending on the section thickness in the castings made in sand molds under changing casting conditions. The fluidity and advance distance of the liquid metal was determined comparatively with experimental and modeling techniques under the changing casting conditions in the parameters determined in this study. When the outcomes were examined; it was observed that different liquid metal advance distances occur at different cross-section thicknesses depending on the changing conditions.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Predicting and Mapping Dominant Height of Oriental Beech Stands Using Environmental Variables in Sinop, Northern Turkey
Yener, Ismet; Guvendi, Engin
The dominant height of forest stands (SDH) is an essential indicator of site productivity in operational forest management. It refers to the capacity of a particular site to support stand growth. Sites with taller dominant trees are typically more productive and may be more suitable for certain management practices. The present study investigated the relationship between the dominant height of oriental beech stands and numerous environmental variables, including physiographic, climatic, and edaphic attributes. We developed models and generated maps of SDH using multilinear regression (MLR) and regression tree (RT) techniques based on environmental variables. With this aim, the total height, diameter at breast height, and age of sample trees were measured on 222 sample plots. Additionally, topsoil samples (0–20 cm) were collected from each plot to analyze the physical and chemical soil properties. The statistical results showed that latitude, elevation, mean annual maximum temperature, and several soil attributes (i.e., bulk density, field capacity, organic carbon, and pH) were significantly correlated with the SDH. The RT model outperformed the MLR model, explaining 57% of the variation in the SDH with an RMSE of 2.37 m. The maps generated by both models clearly indicated an increasing trend in the SDH from north to south, suggesting that elevation above sea level is a driving factor shaping forest canopy height. The assessments, models, and maps provided by this study can be used by forest planners and land managers, as there is no reliable data on site productivity in the studied region.

In this work, it was investigated the usability of artificial bee colony (ABC) and genetic algorithm (GA) in modeling adsorption of Co(II) onto drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS). DWTS, obtained as inevitable byproduct at the end of drinking water treatment stages, was used as an adsorbent without any physical or chemical pre-treatment in the adsorption experiments. Firstly, DWTS was characterized employing various analytical procedures such as elemental, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD, XRF and TGA/DTA analysis. Then, adsorption experiments were carried out in a batch system and DWTS's Co(II) removal potential was modelled via ABC and GA methods considering the effects of certain experimental parameters (initial pH, contact time, initial Co(II) concentration, DWTS dosage) called as the input parameters. The accuracy of ABC and GA method was determined and these methods were applied to four different functions: quadratic, exponential, linear and power. Some statistical indices (sum square error, root mean square error, mean absolute error, average relative error, and determination coefficient) were used to evaluate the performance of these models. The ABC and GA method with quadratic forms obtained better prediction. As a result, it was shown ABC and GA can be used optimization of the regression function coefficients in modeling adsorption experiments.

- MakaleYalnız künye2017Mathematical modeling of thin-layer microwave drying of corn husk and investigation of powder properties
Akdogan, A.; Koç, G. Caliskan; Dirim, S. N.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different microwave powers on the drying kinetics of chopped corn husks and to determine the properties of the corn husk powder obtained after grinding the dried product. The drying behavior of corn husks was determined using eleven commonly used thin-layer models. The obtained powders were analyzed for moisture content, water activity, color, tapped and bulk densities, wettability, flowability, and cohesiveness. In addition, the effective moisture diffusivity and activation energy of corn husks were calculated from drying data. From the analysis of the results, the drying rate and the drying time of corn husk slices considerably decreased with increasing microwave power. Among all used drying models, the Page model was found to satisfactorily describe the kinetics of microwave drying of corn husk. The effective moisture diffusivity values ranged from 2.264x10(-10) to 8.941x10(-10) m(2)s(-1).

- MakaleYalnız künye2016Preparing Forest Management Plans With Spatial Simulation Model
Kadiogullari, Ali Ihsan; Keles, Sedat; Baskent, Emin Zeki; Bingöl, Ozkan
This manuscript presents a simulation-based spatial forest management planning model developed for ecosystem-based multiple use forest planning approach. The general framework of the simulation model was firstly introduced. It was then implemented in a typical forest management planning unit. Four forest management planning scenarios including nonspatial and spatial characteristics were developed. These scenarios were compared in the context of different forest performance indicators (such as allowable cut, growing stock, net carbon sequestration, age-class distribution at the end of the simulation). When compared the simulation-based forest management planning scenarios, it was found that there were no significant changes in timber production levels among scenarios. On the other hand, spatial forest management scenarios controlled forest ecosystem structure and produced more applicable forest management plans.

Kadiogullari, Ali Ihsan; Keles, Sedat; Baskent, Emin Zeki; Bingöl, Ozkan
Spatial Decision Support System is indispensable to develop spatial planning alternative by integrating spatial parameters into forest management plans using ecosystem based multiple use forest management planning concept (EBMUFM). Spatial forest planning provides several opportunities to decision makers to generate spatially implementable harvest schedules and perform spatial analyses as part of integrated planning. This paper presents the role and importance of spatial forest planning in forest management, and evaluates it in the context of Turkish forestry. Basic concepts related to spatial forest planning are explained. Some important intuitive decision support techniques (modeling techniques) widely used in spatial forest management planning were introduced. Further, spatial decision support systems for forest management planning developed in various countries were provided. Finally, it is concluded that spatial forest planning is extremely needed in EBMUFM.

Eroǧlu, Hasan; Aydin, Musa
In this study, measurements were taken at difierent points of a sample distribution system in order to analyze the levels of harmonics that appear as a day-to-day increasing problem in electrical distribution systems. According to the measurement values, the dominant harmonics have been determined and an electrical model of the system has been prepared using the SimPowerSystems toolbox from MATLAB and Simulink. The accuracy of the electrical model has been verified by the measurement and simulation values. In addition, the transformer connection types' and impedances' simulations have been presented to understand and solve the harmonic problems in electrical distribution systems. With the help of this study, advanced analysis can be performed in the electrical distribution system for power quality analyses and this study can be a background for similar kinds of simulation studies.
