Budak, Burhan; Sarikaya, Sevim Beyza Ozturk
Phenolic compounds (PCs) are secondary metabolites found in the root and flower parts of plants that help protect the plant from pathogens. The amount and content of the plant species and the environment in which they live vary. Because PCs have antioxidant properties, they have a preventive effect against oxidising substances. Therefore, PCs in the human diet contribute to the prevention of cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and many other diseases. Cancer is the most dangerous and deadly disease among these diseases today. Although many chemotherapeutic drugs are used against cancer, the tendency to use other drugs or other applications has increased because the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic drugs is low and healthy cells are damaged in the process. PCs boost the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic drugs against cancer cells while, preserving the health of other cells. In this review, in vivo and in vitro studies conducted in cancer lines, applications of PCs alone, combined applications of PCs with natural substances, and the effects of PCs with drugs were investigated and discussed. In conclusion, gallic acid, ellagic acid, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid are frequently used in cancer treatment. These findings highlight the potential of PCs as versatile adjuvants in cancer treatment, which can increase drug efficacy, protect healthy cells, and minimise toxicity. Consequently, they highlight the therapeutic potential of PCs as complementary agents in cancer treatment strategies.

Aydin, Aydanur; Bağcivan, Gülcan; Özkan, Aleyna
Background: Despite its growing presence in healthcare settings, research on the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) interventions for symptom experience of patients with cancer remains varied and requires a comprehensive synthesis to reach definitive conclusions. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the effectiveness of VR interventions in managing anxiety among individuals diagnosed with cancer. Methods: A comprehensive search of Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus databases was conducted for studies published from 2000 to November 2025. Publications were evaluated by independent reviewers for inclusion. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed via Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools for randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies. Results: Twenty-one publications satisfied the requirements for review inclusion. The meta-analysis demonstrated that VR-based interventions were significantly effective in the management of patients’ anxiety, yielding a moderate-to-high effect size (SMD = −0.793, 95% CI = −1.403 to −0.184; Z = −2.551; p = 0.011). Most studies reported statistically significant decreases in anxiety scores across various cancer types, including breast, prostate, and ovarian cancers. No major side effects were reported, although minor instances of cyber sickness were managed by adjusting session durations. User satisfaction was exceptionally high, with satisfaction scores reaching 4.47/5 and 7.35/10. Implications for practice: The results support the use of VR as an effective and safe non-pharmacological intervention for anxiety management. The findings highlight the potential for VR to be integrated into routine oncology nursing and palliative care to improve the patient experience during stressful treatments like chemotherapy. Conclusion: VR-based interventions are an effective, safe, and highly acceptable approach for managing anxiety in patients with cancer. Further research is needed to support wider clinical implementation and to investigate the potential benefits of VR for other physical and psychological symptoms over longer follow-up periods. Trial registration: PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews CRD42022351573.

AtıfOpenAlex1İncele - Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ3Climate change in Türkiye and its impact on oncology nurses
Kaya, Afşin Ahmet; Aydin, Aydanur; Bağcivan, Gülcan
Climate change threatens human life and health by negatively affecting the basic components of health such as clean air, safe drinking water, nutritious food supply, and safe shelter. Türkiye is a country that is largely exposed to climate change with its cosmopolitan location, which is a bridge between Asia and Europe. Due to climate change, serious effects are seen in all sectors from energy to agriculture, from the economy to health. Climate change is defined as the most important global health threat of the next century, and the problems it brings are seen as the most important pressure factor for the life opportunities of future generations. Food and fresh water availability, rising sea levels, abnormal weather events, migration, and diseases are thought to affect human health. A multidisciplinary approach is required to adapt to climate change’s health effects and reduce its negative health effects. In addition, it is predicted that diseases that are about to disappear will re-emerge and become threats. It is thought that as a result of the contamination of food and water resources with the changing ecosystem, some infections will increase and society will face them. Nurses are both affected by climate change and its effects on public health. Nurses who remain in this situation have a great role in providing effective awareness for raising public awareness. In recent years, oncology clinics have not been affected by fire, earthquakes, and pandemics in our country. In this respect, it can be stated that the health service in Turkish oncology clinics is carried out uninterruptedly and by experts in the field. We learned during the pandemic that the whole world is unprepared for the future effects of climate change. In this direction, nurses should think about solutions for the problems related to climate change in the future.

Demirag, Hatice; Kulakaç, Nurşen; Hintistan, Sevilay; Çilingir, Dilek
Objective: This study aims to determine the effects of cachexia, causing major problems in the world and Turkey, on self-care agency and quality of life in cancer patients. Methods: The population of this cross-sectional and relationship-seeking study consisted of cancer patients in Turkey from April 1 to April 20, 2021. Using the snowball sampling method, 174 patients were sampled. 'Patient Information Form,' 'The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer C30 Cancer Quality of Life Scale,' and 'Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale' were used as data collection tools. Results: In the study, 52 patients (29.9%) were found to have cachexia. Function, general well-being, symptom (except insomnia), and self-care agency, which are subdimensions of the quality-of-life scale, were found to be significantly lower in patients with cachexia than patients without cachexia (P < 0.001). It was determined that there was a significant negative correlation between the cachexia status of the patients and the five basic functions in the functional scale (physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social function), general well-being, and self-care agency, and there was a significant positive correlation between the cachexia status of the patients and the symptom scale (P < 0.001). According to the results of multiple linear regression analysis, it was found that the factor that significantly affected the cachexia status of the patients was their self-care agency (P < 0.001). Conclusions: It was determined that cachexia caused significantly lower self-care agency and quality of life in cancer patients. Furthermore, quality of life was related to self-care agency.

AtıfWoS15OpenAlex6İncele - MakaleYalnız künye2016Disease and Death in the Modern Culture: On Now and Eternity
Demir, Sertac Timur
This paper is basically about nowism as a representation of modernity rather than a temporal fragment, about cancer as philosophical reference rather than as a biological illness, and about death as constructive value rather than as a destructive experience. All these representation-loaded concepts are dealt with through the story of Tessa, the protagonist in the film Now is Good (2012). In the liquid modernity, on the one hand nowist orientations, tendencies and acts are wryly reduced to a cliche: Carpe diem (seize the day) and on the other hand temporal uncertainty of death implies the essential principle of memento mori (remember you will die) or Mutu qabla an tamutu (die before you die). The now is, as a worldview beyond a temporality, not merely good, but perhaps the God of the modern society. However, deadly cancer, which is an uninvited guest, nullifies this modern doctrine that commercializes the now as eternity and immortality itself. Cancer that marks death and the sense of chaos what cancer stirs are antithesis and perhaps antidote of the liquid modernity. This paper, for the very reason, unexpectedly affirms death while criticising the nowist culture.
