- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Investigation of perceived parental attitude in children exposed to sexual abuse: A case-control study
Bayrak, Nurten Gülsüm; Emirza, Elif Güzide; Uzun, Sevda
Background: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. Aims: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. Methods: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and the ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p <.05). The mean scores for ‘acceptance-involvement’ (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p =.005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p <.001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study’s Cronbach’s alpha value for the scale was α =.743. Conclusion: The study’s findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children’s exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control.

Corruption involves greed, money, and risky decision-making. We explore the love of money, pay satisfaction, probability of risk, and dishonesty across cultures. Avaricious monetary aspiration breeds unethicality. Prospect theory frames decisions in the gains–losses domain and high–low probability. Pay dissatisfaction (in the losses) excites dishonesty in the name of justice at the individual level. Corruption Perceptions Index, CPI, signals a high–low probability of getting caught for dishonesty at the country level. We theorize: Decision-makers adopt avaricious love of money aspiration as a lens and frame dishonesty in the gains–losses domain (pay satisfaction–dissatisfaction, Level 1) and high–low probability (CPI, Level 2) to maximize expected utility and ultimate serenity. We challenge the myth: Pay satisfaction curbs dishonesty across nations consistently. Cross-level three-dimensional visualization demonstrates (6500 managers in 32 countries across six continents): With high aspiration, pay dissatisfaction excites the highest- (third-highest) avaricious justice-seeking dishonesty in high (medium) CPI nations; pay satisfaction provokes the second-highest avaricious opportunity-seizing dishonesty in low CPI entities—maximizing expected utility. Low aspiration and high pay satisfaction consistently create low dishonesty—achieving ultimate serenity. We expand prospect theory from a micro and individual-level theory to a cross-level theory of monetary wisdom across 32 nations, providing novel insights to business ethics, the environment, and responsibility.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Investigation of the Relationship Between Nursing Students’ Attitudes Toward and Beliefs About Individuals With Obesity, Their Empathy Level, and Body Image Flexibility
Tuncer, Gülsüm Zekiye; Tuncer, Metin; Duman, Zekiye Çetinkaya
Negative attitudes and beliefs leading to discrimination against individuals with obesity and to their exclusion can cause these individuals to experience various biological, psychological, and social problems. Nursing students constitute the group that will provide care, services, and counseling to individuals with obesity in the future. The present study was aimed at determining the relationship between nursing students’ attitudes toward and beliefs about individuals with obesity and their empathy and body image flexibility levels. This study that has a cross-sectional correlational research design was conducted with 445 students studying at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Nursing between February 2023 and July 2023. The Sociodemographic Information Form, Beliefs About Obese Persons (BAOP) scale, Attitudes Toward Obese Persons (ATOP) scale, Body Image Flexibility Scale (BIFS), and Toronto Empathy Scale (TES) were used as data collection tools. In order to ensure explanatoriness in the analysis of the data, the multiple regression/ correlation analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the scores for the overall BAOP and ATOP scales, which were dependent variables, and BMI and the scores for the overall TES and BIFS, which were the independent variables. The mean scores that the students participating in this study obtained from the overall BAOP and ATOP were 23.89 ± 4.49 and 72.48 ± 11.19, respectively. The mean scores they obtained from the overall TES and BIFS were 51.61 ± 8.80 and 52.19 ± 15.28, respectively. The results demonstrated that higher levels of empathy and body image flexibility were significantly associated with lower levels of negative beliefs about individuals with obesity (B = −0.107, p =.026; B = 0.271, p <.001) and positive attitudes toward individuals with obesity (B = −0.143, p =.002; B = 0.343, p <.001). In the study, as the students’ empathy and body image flexibility levels increased so did their positive perceptions toward individuals with obesity. Nurses should acquire empathic skills during their education in order to demonstrate an equitable and inclusive approach to care and to provide positive health experiences to individuals with obesity. In order for young people studying at university to be more responsive to others, they should be encouraged to develop body image flexibility for their own and others’ bodies. It is also recommended that topics on combating stigma and discrimination to prevent negative attitudes toward and beliefs about individuals with obesity should be added to the curriculum of nursing students.
- MakaleYalnız künye2023A barrier to participation in cervical cancer screenings: fatalism
Duru, Gökcem; Topatan, Serap
Cervical cancer is a significant disease affecting women’s health in terms of its incidence and is one of the most preventable cancers. However, participation in early cervical cancer-screening programs has been unsatisfactory for various reasons. In this descriptive, relationship-seeking study, we examined the relationship between fatalism tendency, an individual barrier to participation in early cancer screening programs, and women’s attitudes toward the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and undergoing the Pap smear test. Research data were collected between August 1, 2019 and December 1, 2019, in a city in northern Turkey from 602 women using a participant information form, the Attitudes Toward Early Diagnosis in Cervical Cancer Scale, and the Fatalism Tendency Scale. We found that fatalistic tendencies in women were a predictor of their attitudes toward the early diagnosis of cervical cancer (odds ratio [OR] = −0.64, β =.47, p <.001) and undergoing the Pap smear test (OR = 1.01, β = −.15, p <.001). Women with high fatalism tendencies had a more negative attitude toward the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and their participation rate in Pap smear screening programs was low. Therefore, nurses must consider women’s fatalistic tendencies and attitudes toward cancer when organizing educational and informational programs that encourage participation in cervical cancer screening.

Based on 6500 managers in 32 countries, our cross-level three-dimensional visualization offers the following discoveries. Under high aspiration conditions, pay dissatisfaction excites the highest- (third-highest) avaricious justice-seeking dishonesty in high (medium) CPI nations, supporting the certainty effect. However, pay satisfaction provokes the second-highest avaricious opportunity-seizing dishonesty in low CPI entities, sustaining the possibility effect-maximizing expected utility. Under low aspiration conditions, high pay satisfaction consistently leads to low dishonesty, demonstrating risk aversion-achieving ultimate serenity. We expand prospect theory from a micro and individual-level theory to a cross-level theory of monetary wisdom across 32 nations. We enhance the S-shaped Curve to three 3-D corruption surfaces across three levels of the global economic pyramid, providing novel insights into behavioral economics, business ethics, the environment, and responsibility.

- MakaleYalnız künye2014Attitudes towards HIV/AIDS patients and empathic tendencies: A study of Turkish undergraduate nursing students
Özakgül, Aylin Aktaş; Şendir, Merdiye; Atav, A. Serdar; Kiziltan, Belkiz
Background: Studies indicate that the attitudes of nurses, nursing students, and other health care professionals towards Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients are affected by cultural differences and the fear of HIV/AIDS infection, resulting in both negative attitudes and reluctance to care for these patients. Empathy is critical for all health professionals in the delivery of effective care. Research indicates that as empathic tendencies develop, so do better communication skills, better attitudes, and better quality of care. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among demographic factors, familiarity with HIV/AIDS, attitudes towards HIV/AIDS, and empathic tendencies in a Turkish sample of nursing students. Design and Methods: Using a non-experimental, correlational design, data on demographics, HIV/AIDS Attitude Scale (AAS) and the Scale of Empathic Tendency (SET) were collected. Participants: The study sample consisted of 614 undergraduate nursing students in two universities located in different geographic regions of Turkey. Results: The results of this study indicated that attitudes and empathic tendencies are related to knowledge and exposure to patients. As well, those students with more positive attitudes had higher empathic tendencies towards HIV/AIDS patients. Conclusions: It is important to adopt strategies to improve the empathic tendencies and attitudes of nursing students. These strategic changes would increase the quality of care provided to all patients.
