In vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the five different solvent extracts of Centaurea pulcherrima var. Freynii from Turkey

    Ozcan, Kadriye; Acet, Tuba

Various extracts of Centaurea pulcherrima var. freynii were investigated for total phenolic, flavonoid, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The antioxidant properties of plant extracts were evaluated by free radical scavenging assays (DPPH and ABTS). Antimicrobial activities were examined using disc diffusion methods. According to the results of antioxidant capacity assays, the plant showed moderately antioxidant activity in test methods. It was found that ethyl acetate extract showed the most effective activity including total phenolic, flavonoid, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

    Kaya, A. A.; Üçüncü, O.; Ilter, S. M.; Baltaci, C.; Öztürk, S.

In this study, the chemical composition and antimicrobial activities of the essential oil of the Rhinanthus angustifolius subsp. grandiflorus plant were investigated. Essential oil was obtained from all parts of the plant by hydrodistillation and was analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. 31 components representing 99.46% of the total oils were characterized. The main components of these species were found to be 2,3-dihydro-5-methyl-1H-indene (25.14%), alpha-cubebene (19.27%), 1-hexadecene (15.59%) and hexadecanoic acid (12.14%). The antimicrobial activity of the isolated essential oil was investigated. Antimicrobial activity was observed against B. cereus, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7 and S. Aureus microorganisms. Moreover, an effect on the ferments of B. cereus, E. coli, E. coli O157:H7 and S. Aureus was detected.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of a new series of 4-alkoxy-2-arylquinoline derivatives as potential antituberculosis agents

Three new series of 33 quinolone compounds, 2-(2-, 3-, and 4-fluorophenyl)-4-O-alkyl(C5-15)quinolines (7a-k, 8a-k, and 9a-k), were synthesized from 2-(2-, 3-, and 4-fluorophenyl)-2,3-dihydroquinolin-4(1H )-one (4, 5, and 6) by the reaction of alkyl halides under basic conditions in DMF. The new compounds 7a-k, 8a-k, and 9a-k were synthesized from flavonones 4-6, which can be considered new precursors for quinoline synthesis through a one-step reaction. All the target compounds (7a-k, 8a-k, and 9a-k) were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against nine test microorganisms. They showed the most activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 62.5-500 μg/mL, indicating their potential uses as antituberculosis agents. Among them 8a-k (m-fluoride) were the most active compounds against M. smegmatis (MIC, 62.5-125 μg/mL). The newly synthesized title compounds were also evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant activities using DPPH• radical scavenging and FRAP tests. They showed at a low concentration (mg/mL) a range of SC50 values of 0.03-12.48 mg/mL (DPPH•) and 0-722 μM (FRAP), respectively. The antioxidant results of compounds 7a-k, 8a-k, and 9a-k revealed that the length of the alkyl chain was negatively correlated with antioxidant capacity.

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) sour sauce extracts

Yildiz, Hilal; Sengul, Memnune; Cetin, Bulent; Karatas, Neva; Ercisli, Sezai; Okcu, Zuhal; Dzubur, Ahmed; Hadziabulic, Semina

In this study, nine-pomegranate sour sauce (PSS) obtained from market in Turkey was tested for their total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant and antimicrobial activity and selected physico-chemical properties. Methanolwater extracts of PSS were found more effective than water extracts against microorganisms. In particular, Pseudomonas pseudoalkaligenes BC3445 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213 showed the greatest sensitivity to the extracts. Total soluble solids, total sugar, reducing sugar, sucrose, ash, pH, titratable acidity, colour (L, a, b) of PSS were determined between 69.5-73.3° Brix, 21.89-53.44 g/100 g, 20.97-50.62 g/100 g, 0.75-2.81 g/100 g, 0.05-0.58 g/100g, 2.64-2.91, 4.30-7.97, 16.58-55.38, (+3.94)-(+38.54), (-6.98)-(-38.36). β-carotene bleaching assay indicated that PSS possessed considerable antioxidantactivities. The higher antioxidant capacities of PSS implied that they might be potential resources for the development of functional food.

Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of new phthalocyanine complexes and electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical behaviour of cobaltphthalocyanine

Kaya, Elif Çelenk; Karadeniz, Hülya; Koca, Atif; Kahriman, Nuran; Sökmen, Atalay

A novel phthalocyanine bearing oxygen donor atoms on the peripheral positions has been synthesised by cyclotetramerisation of (E)-4-(4- cinnamoylphenoxy) phthalonitrile and its nickel, zinc, cobalt, copper and lead derivatives prepared. The thermal stabilities of the phthalocyanine compounds have been determined and their possible biological activities (antibacterial, anticandidal and antifungal) studied. The effects of substituent on the electrochemical and in situ spectroelectrochemical behaviour of cobaltphthalocyanine have been investigated and an in situ electrocolorimetric method was applied to investigate the colour of the electrogenerated anionic and cationic forms of the complex.

Cansu, Tayyibe Beyza; Yücel, Murat; Sinek, Kadriye; Baltaci, Cemalettin; Karaoglu, Sengül Alpay; Yayli, Nurettin

The present work describes the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil of Myosotis alpestris F.W. Schmidt subsp. alpestris (Boraginaceae). The essential oil was obtained from all parts of the plant by microwave distillation and analyzed by GCFID and GC-MS. Forty-seven components representing 88.2 % of the total oil were characterized and the main components of this species were found to be n-nonanal (11.8 %), decanal (10.8 %), n-octanal (10.7 %), hexahydrofanesyl acetone (6.6 %), o-cymene (3.9 %), tetradecanal (3.7 %), eicosanol (2.2 %) and E-β-farnesene (2.0 %). The isolated essential oils of M. alpestris subsp. alpestris was tested for antimicrobial activity against the bacteria Escherichia coli, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, Mycobacterium smegmatis and the fungus Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae at maximum essential oil concentration in hexane of 1000 μg/mL and they showed only antibacterial activity against fungus bacteria.
