The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of high level of nitric oxide (NO) production and oxidative stress (OS) on nephropathology and to identify whether NO and OS have any correlation with apoptosis seen in diabetic kidney, elucidating the underlying mechanism(s) involved in the development of nephropathology in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Expression levels of caspase 3, caspase 9, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), for the detection of oxidative damage to DNA, were examined in diabetic kidney tissues. Results of the study revealed that the levels of 8-OHdG (P<0.005), eNOS (P<0.005), iNOS (P<0.005), caspase 3 (P<0.005) and caspase 9 (P<0.005) were remarkably higher in diabetic kidney tissues than in controls. In addition, STZ-treated animals showed significant loss of body weight and renal enlargement. It was suggested that apoptosis, OS and increased NO levels are involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The results also strongly suggested that STZ-induced apoptosis through activation of the intrinsic pathway and that might be most likely related to increased NO levels. Moreover, high NO production was not only mediated by eNOS but also by iNOS. Increased NO production may contribute to hyperfiltration and microalbuminuria in early diabetic nephropathy. Furthermore, expression of 8-OHdG might give an idea of the progress and may be essential as it has a diagnostic significance for this disease. In conclusion, we believe that eNOS and iNOS overexpressions induce diabetic nephropathy by mediating apoptosis in STZ-induced rats.

A total number of 947 calving records from 613 Holstein Friesian cows raised at a private dairy farm in Kelkit, Turkey, from 2004 to 2006 were used to study the effect of non-genetic factors on calving difficulty and stillbirth rate using CHAID algorithm. The mean calf birth weight was 41.0±0.19 kg. The overall incidence of calving difficulty and stillbirths in the Holstein Friesian herd were 9.1% and 9.4%, respectively. Calf birth weight, birth type and calving season had the greatest impact on calving difficulty. The increase in calf birth weight was associated with a significant increase in calving difficulties (P<0.01). The calving difficulty risk in twins (18.9%) was higher than in singleton calves (5.0%). The main environmental variables affecting the stillbirth rate were parity number, calf birth weight, sex of calf, calving season and calving difficulty. Parity number was statistically the most relevant factor affecting the stillbirth rate, which was also higher in primiparous (18.7%) than in multiparous cows (5.4%). As the calf birth weight increased, a significant increase was also in the stillbirth rate (P<0.01). The stillbirth rate in winter (19.7%) was higher than in other seasons (3.6%) (P<0.01). Calving assistance was associated with an increased risk of stillbirth (P<0.05). As a result, calf birth weight, birth type and calving season had the greatest impact variables on calving difficulty, however, parity, calf birth weight, sex, calving season and calving difficulty were the most effective variables on stillbirth in Holstein Friesian Cattle.

The present study was aimed at the comparison of floor-based growth (FBG) and caged-based growth (CBG) systems in broiler production for growth performance and parameters related to slaughter, carcass and meat quality. Ninety one-day-old male Ross-308 chicks constituted the material of the study. It was determined that, in Groups FBG and CBG, the differences between body weight and cumulative body weight values were statistically very significant (P<0.01). The final body weights measured at the end of the trial and the mean body weight gain values in Groups FBG and CBG were determined as 2530 g - 2046 g and 2389.16 g - 1904.77 g, respectively. The end-trial final feed conversion rates of Groups FBG and CBG were determined as 1.82 and 1.88, respectively, and it was ascertained that the difference between the values of the two groups was statistically insignificant (P>0.05). While the hot and cold dressing percentages and the neck, wing, drumstick and tail percentages did not statistically differ between Groups FBG and CBG (P>0.05), values pertaining to breast meat displayed significant differences (P<0.05). It was determined that the L*, b* and C* values pertaining to breast meat and the L*, a*, b* and C* values pertaining to chicken drumsticks displayed statistically significant differences (P<0.05, P<0.01) between the trial groups.
